Upgraded 2020 Ford F-Series Super Duty Introducing Tremor Off-Road Package
T
he Ford F-Series Super Duty is set to undergo some changes as it enters the 2020 model year, including the addition of an all-new 7.3L gasoline engine along with a 10-speed automatic transmission plus some revised exterior and interior design features. As we get closer to the anticipated fall release of the 2020 trucks, Ford has announced it will be offering an all-new Tremor Off-Road package which will result in the most capable off-road Super Duty ever. Ford says the Tremor will provide the Super Duty with new hardware and tech that is designed to handle rough terrain and provide greater towing and payload than the similar Ram Power Wagon. The package will be available for the XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum F-250 and F-350 models with either the all-new 7.3L gasoline engine or the third-generation 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel. The Tremor package can be specified for 4x4 single-rear-wheel SuperCrew trucks with a 6.75-ft. Box, while the F-250 models will require the high-capacity trailer tow package. Off-road upgrades to the truck include 35-in. Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires on unique 18-in. wheels, and a 2-in. front end lift and shorter air dam that result in 10.8-in. of ground clearance and a best-in-class water fording of 33-in. plus the best approach and departure angle of any Super Duty ever. The progressive-rate springs help balance the heavy-duty towing needs while also controlling Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2019
body motion on rock-strewn trails. The Tremor trucks will also use a locking rear differential with electronic shift-on-the-fly engagement and a new Dana limited-slip front differential. The new package will provide selectable drive modes which allow drivers to choose the best setting for the current conditions. These modes include Normal, tow/haul, eco, slippery and deep snow/sand. Finally, for the first time ever, the Super Duty Tremor models receive Trail Control which is a feature that debuted on the F-150 Raptor and Ranger and functions like cruise control specifically for off-road driving.

GMC Upgrades Sierra 1500 for 2020
Distribution Manager:
GMC has revealed the 2020 edition of the Sierra 1500 half-ton pickup with new updates that it hopes will take the truck to the next level. First and foremost, the Sierra 1500 will be offered with the same 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel engine that will be found in the Silverado 1500, which you will read about later on in this magazine. The inline-six engine produces an impressive 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque and will be available on the Denali, AT4, SLT, Elevation and SLE models. Next up, the Enhanced ProGrade Trailering System that was introduced earlier on the 2020 Sierra HD will be available for the Sierra 1500 and brings more camera views and in-vehicle Trailering App enhancements that are made

to simplify the trailering process. Fifteen camera views will be available when using the system, including a segment-first transparent trailer view to help optimize the driver’s view around the truck and compatible trailers. This feature utilizes the tailgate-mounted camera and available accessory camera that is to be mounted on the rear of the trailer. The Sierra also sees some technological improvements for 2020 with the addition of Adaptive Cruise Control Camera on SLT, AT4 and Denali Trim levels. The system features a single high-mounted camera behind the rearview mirror and can bring the truck to a complete stop. Finally, the 2020 Sierra 1500 will see the 10-speed automatic transmission become available with the 5.3L V8 engine option with Dynamic Fuel Management. This will be the standard paring on the Denali and AT4 models and is available on all four-wheel drive models with the SLE trim and above. We will be sure to keep you updated on the pricing and release info as it comes.
Ford Expanding F-150 Power Stroke Option to XLT Trim
Volume 12, Issue No. 4
Ford of Canada has recently announced that it will be offering the 3.0L Power Stroke diesel engine option on the XLT model. Previously only available for the Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum models, Ford has decided to broaden the availability of the engine to the very popular and affordable XLT line. The engine, which was first introduced on the 2018 F-150,

shares many of the same proven technology found in the Super Duty’s larger 6.7L Power Stroke and pushes out an impressive 250 horsepower and 440 lb-ft. of torque. This allows the truck to deliver 11,400 pounds of towing capacity and 2,020 pounds of payload capacity. Peak torque comes at just 1,750 rpm with strong torque delivery continuing throughout the rpm range which is the ideal setup for towing or hauling heavy loads for long distances. In addition to the increased towing and hauling capacity, the Power Stroke provides the best fuel efficiency ratings of any of the F-150’s engine offerings with 11.8 city and 9.3 highway L/100km. This move should come as no surprise, as diesel-powered half-tons are clearly in right now as Ram has recently unveiled the third generation of the EcoDiesel for its Ram 1500, and GM will offer a Duramax engine option for the 2020 Silverado 1500.
Automotive World Saddened by Passing of Former Chrysler CEO Lee Iacocca Lee Iacocca, who was perhaps best known as the former President of Ford and the man who pulled Chysler from the brink of collapse in 1980, has passed away at the age of 94 in Bel Air, California of complications from Parkinson’s disease. “Lee gave us a mindset that still drives us today – one that is characterized by hard work, dedication and grit,” said Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in a statement. “We are committed to ensuring that Chrysler, now FCA, is such a company, an example of commitment and respect, known for excellence as well as for its contribution to society. His legacy is the resiliency and unshakeable faith in the future that live on in the men and women of FCA who strive every day to live up to the high standards he set.” Iacocca enjoyed a nearly five-decade career in the automotive world beginning in 1946 at Ford Motor Co. where he eventually became President and had a huge part in the release of the Ford Mustang in 1964. After not seeing eye-to-eye with then Ford Chairman Henry Ford II, he was fired in 1978 but was soon recruited by Chrysler where he is largely credited with saving the company in 1980, aided by the release of the Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager minivans. Iacocca is survived by his two daughters, Kathryn and Lia, from his first marriage to wife Mary who passed away in 1983 from health complications caused by diabetes.

Fulfilling All Needs The all-new 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD exceeds the demand for increased HD capacity
HD pickup truck market segment is growing. Recreational vehicles keep growing and the needs of for-business Theowner/operators demand increased HD capacity. Rest assured, Detroit is listening. The builders are all responding to these new needs, and among them is Chevrolet with its newest next-gen Silverado HD that today speaks to all these customer wants. Here are the high notes. Capacity-wise, the 2020 Silverado HD will offer best-in-class towing of up to 35,500 lb. Its traditional 6.6L Duramax turbo-diesel will now make 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. This year, it’s matched to a seg-

ment-first 10-speed automatic transmission, built by Allison. Completely new for 2020 is a gas engine option – a 6.6L V8 that makes 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque and is much cheaper to buy than the diesel. So, while these are the highlights of the new HD truck, I recently had a chance to examine the deeper story found in the engineering details that let this truck achieve these new limits. For instance, the new Silverado HD has beefed up its axles, the locking rear differential, the prop shaft, and the U-joints, and also added a 12-inch ring gear. Hauling big weight also means generating big heat. So to cool the turbo-diesel, a new functional hood vent has been added, along with a 28-inch cooling fan and a run-after-engine-off function.
The test drive of the new HD took place in the high-desert region of central Oregon. This area combines flat altitudes in excess of 5,000 feet with long grades on the eastern side of the Cascade Mountains. This area was ideal to feel the strength and control of these trucks – particularly while towing up to 20,000 lb. Starting with the Duramax-equipped HD 3500, I felt the power of the diesel under load, even accelerating uphill. This Duramax pushes its power through the new Allison 10-speed transmission. This tranny is smooth; it finds the right gear as needed, working silently, without any tug, clunk or lurch. As the road test progressed, I also had a chance to concentrate on the sub-systems that are part of the new tow packages. These are crucial to road-manage this kind of weight. Among these is an Auto Park Brake that holds the truck in place while hooking up. There is also Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control. Controlling speed on hills is also a function of the Auto Grade Brake and the Diesel Exhaust Brake. Enhanced Digital Variable Steering assists the driver at highway speeds as well as during lowspeed parking lot manoeuvres. And speaking of parking lots; when towing any trailer, that is where every trip starts and ends. It’s also where problems occur and driver anxiety can be at its highest while reversing. Chevy has an answer for these stresses. The new Silverado HD comes with an advanced camera system that offers 15 different views – all seen on the centre stack console screen. The various camera angles cover off all sides of the truck and offer views that traditional mirrors simply cannot; some come up automatically while others can be chosen by the driver as needed. These include off the nose of the truck, a hitch-view, inbed view and a camera mounted at the rear of the
12 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2019
trailer that creates a view called “Transparent Trailer” – yes, you can see exactly what’s behind your trailer, on screen, in what otherwise has always been a blind-spot.
eliminates a lot more of the traditional blind spots. Consider all these features together and you’ll experience what I did – a much safer, more relaxed and precise hooking, backing and towing experience.
Other new electronic driver-assist features address trailers specifically. The computer can store information on up to five different trailers, including length and optimal trailer brake gain settings. Once programmed, the driver can call up any trailer profile and start it with a single push of a button. There is also a one-person trailer light test and trailer light diagnostics settings. Everything is aimed at making one-man operations easy. Another electronic feature extends coverage to the trailer and includes trailer-tire pressure and temperature monitoring right in the truck cab.
The cargo bed on this Silverado has also been updated (much of these improvements have gravitated from the refresh of the 1500-series last year). Each HD cargo bed now comes with 12 fixed tie-down points and 9 moveable points. Also, by recessing the box into the sidewalls, the new HD offers segment-leading cargo volume. The bed has also upgraded its lighting options and now offers a 120V outlet.
I also noted a new mirror design. The new glass area is larger, the arm moves further out and it incorporates a great new convex mirror that
14 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2019
For access, Silverado has increased the size of its corner bumper step cutouts which will now fit size 13 boots and is (in my opinion) still the simplest and most elegant solution to tall beds; but they’ve gone one step further. They have added a cut-out to each side of the truck-body that gives the customer a leg up at the front of the box as well. As for
During testing at previous Canadian Truck King Challenges, we found and called out Chevrolet on each of these problem areas. It is satisfying to see that the engineers are listening to us – and many others I’m sure – all of whom identified the shortcomings of the DEF system. Frankly, these changes solve some long standing irritations. Well done Chevy.
more power options, for the first time, this HD can be ordered with a power up-and-down tailgate. As the majority of HD trucks are ordered with the diesel engine option, it’s a big deal that the necessary DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) system has received three significant updates. First, the DEF tank itself has been relocated to inside the frame rails. Its prior position left it vulnerable to rough road impact. Second, the under-hood filler port has been relocated to beside the fuel port inside the filler door. This is so much easier to use. Third, a DEF gauge has been added to the instrument cluster. The previously used low-DEF fluid warning lights often came as a surprise and never at a convenient time. Now, being able to glance at a gauge anytime means never being “surprised” again.
16 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2019
While we did this drive in June, I noted a couple of cold-weather improvements on the truck (after all, winter is always just around the corner). These include a redesigned front fascia that accepts snowplows (no cutting needed) and a fixed integrated block heater plug-in. No more dangling cords through the grille. Also new is a factory installed PTO option that GM warranties. While I’ve mentioned it before, I have to highlight the VIN-specific trailer weight label that GM (GMC and Chevrolet) puts on the doorjamb of every truck. This is something only they do and it is wonderful. The numbers on the label are for your truck specifically – no generalizations. The limits listed there are determined by the unique build of your truck – you will never have to “guess” what you can tow again. After two days driving this HD, I came away happy with its abilities, but probably even happier with the driver-assist systems that GM is investing in. The camera system in particular reduces stress and will surely eliminate many of the low-speed minor bangs and scraps that we’ve all had because mirrors are just not perfect. These new systems are going a long way to creating an informed, calmer driver - which is the greatest safety feature of all.

ROAD TEST: 2019 FORD RANGER
Real-World Testing Story and photos by Benjamin Yong
I
t’s been a spell since the Ford Ranger was last seen on our side of the pond, discontinued about eight years ago. The once-compact truck returns all-new for the 2019 model year, albeit growing into a mid-size while appearing, and performing, quite unlike anything else currently found in the segment. Trucks Plus spent a fair amount of time behind the wheel and here are a few of our thoughts on the redesign. “It’s an entirely different platform — this is our global Ranger, which is the second best-selling mid-size truck in the world,” says Ford national certified pre-owned manager Joe Comacchio. “So we originally left the segment in 2011 [in Canada] during a sales decline and are back in now because there’s lots of growth. We literally took everything we know about trucks from F-150 and applied it to this, so the new Ranger meets the same durability tests that an F-150 has to. Then we made modifications to meet the needs of the North American truck buyer.” Rather than a traditional boxy front end usually found on other products, this pickup possesses a contoured nose with a short overhang, thin headlamps housing optional LED lighting, and raked hexagonal grille, hood and windshield. Not only does it look sleek, but is aerodynamically functional while helping to cut down on wind noise. Moving down the side, a high beltline is present, accentuating the doors that are uniquely creased towards the bottom. Speaking of which, both a two-door (SuperCab) and four-door (SuperCrew) variant are sold. At the back, those who 24 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2019

choose the former receive a six-foot bed while the latter, five-foot. “RANGER” is stamped across the exterior of the robust tailgate, able to handle both people and cargo. Aside from the two body styles, a number of trim and exterior/performance packages are available. During a recent event held up in the scenic Whistler back country, the SuperCrew loaners we drove were outfitted with the FX-4 Off-Road package, adding steel front plating, heavy-duty shocks, all-terrain tires and a lot of unseen extras such as an electronic locking rear differential and other traction-enhancing wizardry I’ll touch on below. Venturing inside, what’s refreshing is how un-trucky the interior is, a plus for the lifestyle adventure-seeking crowd the vehicle is perfect for. The steering wheel, eight-inch touchscreen display and shifter are similar to a setup you’d find in one of Ford’s crossovers, while the
high seating position and roomy cabin give an excellent view of the road and surroundings. Only one powertrain is currently offered: the same 2.3-litre turbocharged EcoBoost also utilized in the current four-cylinder Mustang, mated to an efficient 10-speed automatic transmission. Feeling more like a V6, the engine responds quickly, easily pulling all 2,014 kilograms of curb weight along nicely. True four-wheel drive allows 2-high and 4-low and high settings to suit various surface conditions. Piloting the Ranger on highways and byways is great and all, however we couldn’t call this a true review without putting the pickup through the crucible of off-roading. Fortunately, B.C. provides no shortage of opportunities to do so, and we took the vehicles out on repurposed logging trails courtesy of Canadian Wilderness Adventures specializing in motorized tours of paths less traveled up in the mountains. Featuring a high-strength steel frame, frame-mounted steel bumpers and true body-on-frame construction, the rugged hardware is complemented by some impressive technology. FX-4 includes a Terrain Management System containing four modes: normal, grass, gravel and snow, and mud and ruts. Depending on the one selected, throttle response and shifting behaviour is modified to deliver ideal results. Trail Control, on the other hand, was made for the dirt and rock covered routes we encountered on our 30-minute or so tour. After choosing the desired speed, up to a maximum of 32 km/h, the computer handles acceleration and braking duties so all the driver has to do is concentrate on what’s ahead and steer. It’s no different really than programming cruise control for a cruise down the highway; stepping on the throttle or brake pedal resumes manual operation. Although I didn’t get a chance to tow during testing, all models are 26 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2019
capable of hauling 7,500 pounds. For those interested in learning more, the subject was covered in a previous issue. Worth mentioning is how great the truck simply behaves around town. Handling is tight, climbing in and out isn’t too much of a chore, and a WiFi hotspot may be installed so passengers can check email or stream a movie. Ford Co-Pilot360 makes driving easier as well, bundling blind spot warning (even works for a connected trailer), lane-keep assist, autonomous emergency braking and automatic high beams. FIRST DRIVE: 2020 CHEVY SILVERADO 1500 DIESEL
Long Awaited
After a long wait, a diesel engine is finally available in Chevrolet’s half-ton Silverado Story and photos by Howard J Elmer
T
he banner headline for this story should be “Chevrolet introduces its first small diesel for use in the Silverado 1500.” However, while a good news story for truck buyers – increased powertrain options always are – in this case I could also add the word “finally” to my headline as they are the last of the Big Three to do this. Even by its own admission, this diesel engine is late. So, while this new oil-burner will be dropped in an engine bay of a 2020 model, the truck itself got a complete generational update for the 2019 model year and that was where it was supposed to go.
Now, you’d think that this late-availability diesel would simply be added to what is already a new truck, and that would be news enough. Not so, in the hyper-competitive world of pickup truck sales; I was just a little surprised to also see significant additions to the 2020 truck – in addition to the diesel - just a year after the new half-ton was released. But first, I don’t want to gloss over a powertrain option that many of us have been waiting a decade for. Its arrival is big for the bow-tie brand. This Duramax addition means that as of today, all popular American-built half-tons are now available with a diesel option. Here is what you’ll get. This new Duramax turbodiesel engine displaces 3.0 litres and is designed as an inline-six cylinder configuration. It’s GM-designed and built and its straight long-block design sets it apart. This last detail is important. Over at Ford and Ram, they use V-designs for their 3.0L’s, while this new Duramax instead took a page out of the book written by Cummins – which primarily uses a straight-six design and is famous for it. This aluminum powerplant uses a variable-geometry turbo and a new low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation system that adds to its efficiency. Thanks to its in-line design, it’s also vibration-free and the power comes on smoothly. This straightsix design’s other advantage is more power. The GM 3.0L makes a generous 277 hp and puts out 460 lb-ft of torque at 1,500 rpm. Compare this to Ford’s 3.0L V6 Power Stroke which is rated up to 250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque, while the Ram EcoDiesel (also a V6 3.0L) makes 240hp and 420 lb-ft of torque.

A known feature of any diesel is fuel efficiency. GM wants its new turbodiesel to be known for this quality in particular. So, knowing that gearing is also important to fuel efficiency, they paired it with a new efficient transmission. A lightweight 10-speed automatic manages this diesel’s power – with a design emphasis on over-drive gearing. Chevy’s stated goal for the 3.0L Duramax at the drive event I attended was an estimated fuel target of 40 mpg at a steady 50 mph (which is 5.8L/100 km at 80 km/h). *This engine has not received EPA fuel economy certification yet. To demonstrate that this goal was not just a boast, GM asked me to drive a 30-mile (50-km) loop while trying to achieve the best fuel economy number on the truck’s digital readout. I managed a top-scoring run of 44.1 mpg for this loop (which converts to 5.3L/100km). Now, I was hyper-miling – mirrors folded in, A/C off, feathering the accelerator and never touching the brakes as I drove way below speed limit to achieve this result. Not something I’d normally do. Still, it was an impressive outcome and clearly shows off the potential fuel savings of this 10-speed diesel-powered combination. So, while fuel economy is a high note, a curious stat is Chevy’s max tow rating for the 3.0L diesel-equipped Silverado. It will be 9,300 lb. This is considerably lower than the Ram 3.0L diesel rating (12,560 lb) and what Ford has pegged its 3.0L Power Stroke at – max 11,500 lb. Is Chevy being conservative? Are the others boasting? These questions remain to be answered. However, conversely, for 2020, Chevy is claiming also the towing high ground in the weight wars with a new max rating of 13,400 lb – with the 6.2L V8 gas engine providing the propulsion. Of note, too, is that this max number has been boosted from a (what was then) high of 12,200 lb on the 2019 Silverado 1500. This kind of jump in just a year is what this level of competition causes.

For 2020, with the diesel engine included, you now have five powertrain options available to you. Silverado 1500 is also offered in eight unique trim packages – Work, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ and High Country. The content is already high, but Chevy felt that it needed more. So, other available new features for 2020 include Adaptive Cruise Control, increased camera views (up to 15 now, including one called Transparent Trailer – which allows the driver to see what is behind the trailer on-screen in the centre stack at anytime). Other helpful towing features include a trailer checklist, GM’s unique towing label (listing precise weight ratings), a hitch-view camera, Automatic Parking Brake, Tow-Haul Reminder, and a computer that stores up to five different trailer profiles, including each one’s specific trailer brake gain memory. Pricing has not been set, but trucks are available to order now across Canada – including ticking the box for the new 3.0L Duramax diesel engine option.

here are so many responsible ways to spend a paycheque. Rent, groceries, student loans, and general savings all come to mind, yet none of those options are really top of mind for a true automotive enthusiast. “I don’t want a mean-looking rig equipped with a few inches of beefy lift, high-performance shocks, and a set of aggressive wheels and tires to match,” says, umm, no one. Just as a gearhead will always find spare coins for speed and performance parts, a truck and off-road admirer will bust the piggy bank to install a stylish new mod. Today’s focus: Taking a plunge into the complexities of suspension—because investing a few hundred to a few grand is obviously the smarter way to spend a paycheque, right? “Beyond looking cool, the main reason to lift a truck is to gain clearance and get the body, frame, and differentials higher. Installing bigger tires is how you do that, and the only way to fit them is to lift the truck,” explains Benjamin Jerew in a feature titled, Lifting a Truck’s Suspension — Why, How and Whoa! As Jerew educates on NAPA’s Know How Blog: • Off-roading is easier with a lifted truck because of its increased approach, breakover, and departure angles. The taller tires boost differential clearance, and the lifted suspension keeps all four wheels on the ground for maximum traction. • Visibility is also better in a lifted truck. After all, you can see much farther down the road. • Finally, towing and hauling can be easier in a lifted truck because the suspension has more room to settle before bottoming out under the load. 34 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2019
Think It Through Suspension upgrades range from average to extreme, and affordable to expensive, so finding the ideal lift can be intimidating and overwhelming. Evaluating the intended purpose of one’s truck should be of utmost consideration. Everything else stems from this decision, even budget. The owner of an off-road-ready truck has vastly different needs in comparison to a daily driver, or someone whose main purpose is to haul large payloads or tow heavy machinery and a trailer filled with weekend powersports toys. Additionally, rushing into a decision could prove disappointing and expensive. It is wise to review local suspension regulations for on-street and off-road driving since some changes to a suspension system could put a truck owner in violation. Furthermore, “Lifting your truck might look cool and come with some benefits, but a lifted truck isn’t the same after you’ve significantly changed the parameters of its operation,” Jerew reminds. All modifications have some effect on driving experience, but especially suspension. This is not a modification that should be made in haste. 4x4 Off-Road Network in Northern Colorado states in jest, “It’s going to handle differently in inclement weather on typical paved roads, and the highway will chew through your tires in the form of uneven wear and tear. And did I mention how loud those tires are, and the fact that they just don’t ride like a dream once that suspension lift goes in?”
Conversely, a suspension lift is designed to push the wheels down from the frame. Consumers have a variety of choices here as well, from coil-spring bushings and leaf spring shackles to full suspension kits. “By full lift, we are referring to lifting up both the front and rear of the vehicle. In many cases, smaller lift kits apply the same concept as a leveling kit, using spacers to provide the lift. But this isn’t true for every small suspension kit, and you may find that yours requires a little more skill or specialty equipment,” Williams explains.
TrailFX Lift Kit
Suspension upgrades alter a truck’s centre of gravity, which can affect the comfort and ease of handling. Likewise, as a truck gains height, it is at a greater risk of rolling while cornering. Depending upon the aftermarket suspension of choice, other modifications may need to be completed as well. New shocks and longer brake lines may be required, or even driveshaft extensions or an upgraded sway bar or traction bars to relieve stress on components or maintain stability. Don’t forget fuel efficiency—as those bigger tires and wheels, along with the suspension kit itself, all add significant weight. And one can’t discount the convenience factor. An all-new Ram 1500 lifted in all its glory may illicit heart-pounding delight when pulling up to the curb, but bigger, taller trucks also pose increased difficulty for that pretty date of yours who is struggling to climb in and out, even with the assistance of steps and running boards by trusted names like Dee Zee, TrailFX, and Westin. Understanding the Basics Now that all disclaimers are out of the way, it is time for an education in choices, specifically investing in a level kit versus a suspension lift kit. “Leveling kits, in general, lift the front end of the vehicle to correct stance and provide some additional clearance for wheels and tires,” states Mark Williams, author of The Engine Block’s Tech Corner: Consider THIS Before DIYing Your Suspension Kit. “Depending on the truck, this is done with either torsion bar keys or spacers placed within the suspension itself. Sometimes, the lift can be achieved through other methods. But generally speaking, the job isn’t an overly complicated task. Most anyone who can turn a wrench can take this on at home, provided they have the appropriate tools for the job,” he adds. A leveling kit can give a truck 2.5 inches of additional space, accommodating 33-in. all-terrains. In addition to an easy installation, Auto Anything notes they are far less expensive in comparison to a full suspension lift kit. Its website has a helpful breakdown of brand and product selection, as shown below: • Airbag kits - Air Lift Air Bag Suspension Kit • Coil spacer kits - ReadyLIFT Leveling Kits • Coilovers - Rancho QuickLIFT Loaded Leveling Struts • Lifting coil springs - Eibach Lift Kits • OEM replacements - Bilstein B8 5100 Truck, Jeep & SUV Shocks • Rear block kits - ReadyLIFT Rear Block Kits • Torsion key kits - ProRYDE Duck Head Torsion Keys
He reminds readers the greater the lift, the more complex the job. It is important to keep in mind that, often times, additional modifications are required with a suspension lift kit. Consumers will likely require larger tires and wheels to accommodate the lift of choice (a purchase no one is crying over…), longer shocks, as well as other components to correct driveline and alignment angles or brake line lengths. “This is because the further the suspension is lifted, the more other factors—like the geometry of the powertrain or the suspension components—are impacted. Transfer cases and differentials may need to be lowered, and control arms and shocks may need to be replaced with longer units. Almost all lift kits that consequently affect these areas will provide customers with the necessary components to make things work, but it can add a substantial amount of time and difficulty to the process,” he adds. Again, the Auto Anything website does a great job at presenting consumers with brand and product selection: • • • • •

Respectable companies stand behind their products. TrailFX, for example, backs its suspension components with a very generous 5-year—60,000-mile X-GUARD Plus Powertrain warranty that covers both the product and all major powertrain parts, so customers can enjoy their vehicle modifications with peace of mind. The takeaway here: Educate yourself, do not make rash decisions that could cost you time and money down the line, and quality brands and products matter.

Real World Towing
We continue our long-term test of the 2019 GMC Sierra Denali
Story and photos by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of GMC Canada
S
ince my last update, we have added another 4,000 km to the odometer on our 2019 Canadian Truck King Challenge winner – the GMC Sierra Denali. We now have a total of 15,000 km on the truck. I wish it was more, as many readers won’t consider this very “longterm.” However, short of buying the Denali and reporting on it for the next five years, this is the best we can do. I hope readers will agree that it certainly beats the reviews generated by most writers who drive the truck for a week and never even tow with it. Instead, we’ve been driving it for three months now and continue to drive it daily. There have been no mechanical issues to date; instead, we’ve now had enough seat time to have found those small features that we really like, and a few habits the truck has that we don’t like. But more about those later. Today, I want to go into its towing ability and the systems that the truck offers to assist drivers with that task. Over the past two months, the Denali has been doing a lot of towing for us. Luckily, our having it to test just happened to coincide with two major family moves. My son Matthew moved from Georgetown (my basement actually) to his new house in Victoria Harbour, on Georgian Bay, ON. My mother, after 50 years in her Brampton home, is selling and temporarily taking up residence in the digs vacated by Matthew – till her seniors’ condo is ready later this year. So, with all these pieces in motion, I am the chief mover and the Sierra is at the centre of it all – well, it and my trailer. The trailer I’ve been using for these moves is an enclosed four-place snowmobile trailer. At 27-feet long with a full-wall ramp door at the rear, it’s ideal for the chore. The twin-axle trailer weighs around 4,000 lb empty and will carry another 4-to-5,000 lb of cargo. This is a good match for the Sierra, a fact I can verify by simply checking the weight sticker on the truck’s doorjamb.
This weight sticker is worth mentioning right off as it is a feature unique to GM. On each GM truck (Chevrolet and GMC), the factory places a label specific to that truck. Based on the build (by VIN number), the company calculates and clearly states the relevant weight information. And, in the case of my truck those numbers are: GVWR: ............................................................3,221 kg / 7,100 lb GCWR: ...........................................................6,804 kg /15,000 lb GAWR: ............................................................1,724 kg / 3,800 lb Max Payload: . ................................................ 674 kg / 1,486 lb Max Tongue: ...................................................... 422 kg / 930 lb Curb Weight: ................................................2,547 kg / 5,614 lb Curiously, the number they don’t print is Maximum Tow Weight. However, it’s an easy calculation. Take the GCWR minus Curb Weight = 9,386 lb. That’s the max tow rating. And, that number is 100-percent accurate. It’s not a guesstimate – or what my buddy told me I could tow – or what the latest over-the-top TV truck commercial claims. No; it’s a factory number based on my one-off, uniquely-built truck – and it’s SAE J2807* approved. (*This is a tow testing protocol that is agreed on by all the manufacturers. It was conceived and endorsed by the Society of Automotive Engineers). I’ve talked previously about the 6.2-litre V8 with the Dynamic Fuel Management system and its performance. What I want to add today are comments on the 10-speed automatic transmission. First, the power of this combination is more than ample in any situation – including while towing up to the max allowable number. Now, with that much trailer strain on the powertrain, you might think you’d notice some rougher shifting or perhaps a hesitation as the DFM engages or drops out. There is none. As proof - I’ve passed traffic, foot to floor, with my loaded trailer in tow and there isn’t even a squeak from these systems. It is obviously engineered to the point where the weight has no adverse effect on its overall powertrain performance even under severe stress. AUG/SEPT 2019 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 43
So, these observations cover the weight and the power questions that come with a new truck, and at one time (back in the dark ages), this is all a truck owner cared about. Well, that and a good set of mirrors. Today, the towing landscape has changed. Thankfully though, it’s for the better. Anyone who’s been towing for a while knows that the maximum tow weight limits on half-tons have doubled in the past twenty years. So, while the manufacturers continue to build these larger trucks with more capacity, they have also (in the last five years or so) realized that they must add “driver assist features.” These are not to be confused with a convenience feature like a power-seat. Driver assist features are there to help you safely manage these new higher load limits. I want to look at these now and comment on my experiences. 1. Heads-up display: Projected onto the windshield, this 3x7inch multi-colour display conveys information to the driver. The speed readout is the main focus; but it also projects Nav, phone and infotainment settings. So, why do I include this in a list of towing assist features? Because as the driver, you are being fed information without ever having to take your eyes off the road. Anything that cuts down on distractions is a safety feature, and while towing, you can’t afford to be looking anywhere except at the road. In the future, I expect all manufacturers to mimic this innovation and continue to add more data to heads-up screens. 2. Adaptive Ride Control: This electronic system mimics an air-ride suspension as it reacts to road conditions and driver inputs. It adjusts shock damping in milliseconds for optimal ride comfort. What the brochure doesn’t say – but which I noticed right away – is that it also reacts to the weight of a hitched trailer. While hooking up, I could hear it try to counteract the rear-end drop as the trailer weight settled on the hitch. It brought it back up somewhat – not to complete level – but I felt that the added resistance in the shocks certainly helped the attitude of truck and trailer. 3. Tow-haul: Adjusts the shift points in the transmission to maximize torque – particularly from a standing start. This is a system that’s been around for a while, but it’s still important to manage your load. It’s accessed using a rotary dial at the top left of the dashboard. Turn the dial and the centre screen shows you the options and you have to toggle down to it and select. It’s lumped
44 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2019
in with the various “ride” settings that switch up the Adaptive Ride Control feel. It took me a while to find it the first time I looked and I also noted that it has to be reset each time the truck is shut off for more than an hour. I prefer the old “button” on/off control that I could clearly see on the dash. 4. Cameras. If you’ve towed with only mirrors for visibility, you know that there are huge blind spots around a truck/trailer combination. This Denali, however, offers four cameras that virtually eliminate those vision dead-zones. These even stitch images together, creating a virtual surround-vision camera that provides a
are several trailering information features within this app, but the single best one is the trailer light test. This chore (checking your trailer lights), that everyone has done a zillion times after hooking up, is made so easy with the app. The old-school method required a helper or, if you were alone, turning on the lights – walking to the back of the trailer to look – then walking back to flip on the signals – then walking back to check again – and so on. Now, with the app, you stand at the rear of the trailer and cycle through the lights without ever having to take a step. Brilliant. Other functions include custom profiles for up to five trailers. These files can keep track of mileage, tire pressure, maintenance needs and set trailer brake gain settings. There is even a pre-departure checklist that offers a step-by step illustrated guide to the connection process. Obviously this is great for the novice, but for those of us who tow all the time, well – just remember that veteran pilots consult a written checklist before every flight. We all forget things. To sum up, I have to say that this GMC Sierra Denali is a competent and comfortable tow vehicle. Even at its load limits, it feels good on the road, and with the 6.2L V8 and 10-speed transmission, it’s powerful enough in every driving situation. I’ve towed well over 1,000 km in the past three months and I’m satisfied with its performance.
bird’s eye view of your truck. Also, cameras in the side mirrors help see down the full length of the towed combination. A camera on the nose of the truck shows images of potential obstacles, as does the rear-mounted camera. This one in particular is the one every driver learns to love right away. With it, you can back your ball right under the trailer coupler the first time. The screen has guidance lines on it, that bend as you turn the steering wheel, guiding you precisely to the coupler. A magnifying feature (which you activate on the centre stack screen) lets you zoom in as you reverse those last two-inches. Once you experience the various camera views the system offers, you’ll wonder how you ever managed with mirrors alone. 5. Pro-Grade trailering system: This includes an in-vehicle app as well as an optional myGMC smart phone application. There 46 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2019

FEATURE: RV WARRANTY
Extended Warranties Know before you buy Story and photos by Howard J Elmer
R
ecently, two emails regarding extended RV warranties landed in my in-box. These were unusual coming to me; most readers know me as a “test editor,” not someone who writes about insurance. Still, I was moved by these readers’ concerns, even if their questions were outside my normal area of expertise. After all, I too am a consumer and I could feel their profound let-down. Both readers’ concerns had to do with the lack of help they received from the RV dealers who had sold them these protection
plans. The insurance itself was not the concern; instead, the purchasers were disappointed that when they did make a claim, the dealers were not part of the process – they were told to deal with the extended warranty companies directly. This “opting out” of the dealer then put them in the position of having to deal with the insurance companies (which were not local) by phone and email only. Again, I stress, the insurance companies acted professionally and responsibly – but the RVers felt abandoned on the personal side of this transaction. Simply put, they expected the dealer who sold them the policy to also help them with their claims. This, in my opinion, was not an unreasonable expectation. So, it’s these sets of facts that set me off on my own investigation. My first discovery was that there are two types of dealers – those that don’t help with claims and those that do. After talking with several dealers, I found that the scenario I’ve described here could have been avoided if the purchaser had asked just one question of the dealer at the time they were being counselled to buy the extended warranty. That question is – “do you have a service writer on staff that will assist me personally with any future concerns or claims?” If this were you and the answer was no, then you’d have a choice to make. Would you be OK with dealing directly with the insurance company if a problem occurred - without advice or help form the dealer? The other type of dealer I found employs a service writer. He/she will often be your first point of
48 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2019
contact when you call. This person will assess your situation and offer suggestions to remedy your problem. Something as simple as the hot water heater not lighting can be often be handled right on the phone, but, if the heater needs replacing, then they will also advise you on the claims process. Most importantly, they will follow the progress of your claim and the service that will come with it. They will also talk to you when you call, and not push you off to the insurance company’s 800 number. If all this seems obvious to you – then you probably already know that choosing your dealer wisely is the first decision you make before you buy your RV – long before you get to the question of extended warranty. Unlike a car, an RV carries multiple warranties from various suppliers, and having that many complex components means you will be visiting your RV dealer more often than your car dealer. As one dealer put it to me; “imagine driving your house down the road at 100 km/h. All that frame stress, inclement weather and jarring motion will affect all the systems, and you will be back to the dealer for help.” One suggestion I can offer here is the “RV Care Group.” If you purchase a new or used RV from a dealer who is part of the group, you will receive an identity card and a phone app that shows where all the 70 member dealers are located across the country. So, if you are on the road and experience a problem, this net of dealers will treat your RV as your home dealer would. This group
also has an affiliation with a U.S. group called Priority One. So, to recap. Extended warranties for new or used trailers are a good idea (provided you read and understand exactly what is covered and what is not). Second, if you want the level of care that a service writer will provide when you have a problem – make sure the dealer you choose employs one. Lastly, the dealer matters. Choose one that will be there for all your RVing needs for many, many years into the future.

RV-ING: KEYSTONE HIDEOUT 25TH19
Get Out There
Story and photos by Howard J Elmer
T
he toy-hauler RV was born in California, a region that we all know enjoys year-round outdoor activity in friendly weather, and has a large active population. However, the other reason for the toy-hauler boom out West was the fact that the only “public” riding areas available were (and still are) on State-managed lands, and to get to any of these you have to drive. This need is what spawned this new RV design. Californians needed a weekend travel trailer that doubled as transport for the “toys” they took out to the desert and mountains.
Once these units appeared in the West, they were quickly adopted by all regions, as RVers, regardless of where they lived, immediately saw the logic of this “two trailers in one” concept. These toy-haulers can accommodate anything that will fit into the back door – anything from motorcycles, ATV’s, snowmobiles, golf carts, dune buggies or even vintage cars (smaller ones of course) or anything else you can think of – a hot air balloon perhaps? Today, this toy-hauler concept has spread to every type and size of RV – from 15 to 40 feet in length – as towable travel trailers, fifthwheels and even as motorhomes. Now, in Canada, we have always been blessed with easilyaccessed wide open spaces simply known as “Crown Land,” so for many Canadians, going riding has really just been an exercise in heading out the back door from home. However, while that segment of the population will always exist, more and more of us are urban dwellers who have to travel to play. That’s where the value of an all-in-one trailer really shines. On the other hand; if the Hideout is not hauling a toy, it’s still a fully-equipped travel trailer – truly an RVing win/win. The unit I chose to test recently was the Hideout 25TH from Keystone. All-new for the 2019 season, this 30-foot floorplan emphasizes simplicity (no slide-out), ample sleeping space for six (with an optional electric drop-down queen bed in the rear) and a garage length that expands to 14 feet inside (with the benches folded up). To tow this trailer, I used the 2019 GMC Sierra Denali with the 6.2L V8 engine and 10-speed transmission. Incidentally, this truck won the 2019 Canadian Truck King Challenge; for stories of that event, news on the truck and the latest fuel

economy study, see previous issues of Trucks Plus or go to www. truckking.ca . From the outside, features to note on the Hideout include the ride height of the trailer (with 15-inch radial tires on E-coated rims riding on twin Dexter EZ lube axles) that will get the trailer in and out of rough access roads. Other items such as checker plate on the nose will resist road-rash as will the frame rails that are powdercoated to resist chipping. A Cold Mountain Package which fully encloses the underbelly protects the tanks from freezing and will also protect against stones. The screw-type stabilizer jacks at all four corners are standard, as is the power tongue-jack. Note the pass-thru storage at the front of the trailer – not large, but at least it’s the full width of the trailer. The garage access door is the entire rear wall of the trailer, and it’s also the loading ramp. It is a full 8-foot wide and its full trailer height translates to a moderate ramp angle when lowered. The ramp is also
52 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2019
fitted with heavy-resistance springs to carry the weight – for easy one-person opening and closing. It is also covered with a weatherand wear-resistant coating that is also grippy when walked on. Other items that will add to the powersports camping experience is a lighted adjustable power awning, outside 110V plug, exterior speakers, walk-on roof and an outdoor shower. Heading inside, I was glad to see the Morryde Secure Step. This fold-out entry step sits securely on the ground and is built so solidly that it should quickly become the new standard for all trailers – it’s that good and it’s standard equipment. Entry is amidships, across from the small, complete kitchen. The bathroom to the right is large with a main door and second sliding door to the front bedroom. Inside, a radius shower dominates the corner, but still leaves ample space for the sink, counter, a floor-toceiling linen cupboard and the porcelain toilet.
The Queen bed in the front bedroom has enough space around it to allow nightstands on either side as well as mirrored hanging closets just above them. The bed also has hydraulic lifts to access the storage beneath it. An interesting design feature is a laundry chute on the right side of the bed that empties into the pass-thru storage – put a laundry basket down there and retrieve the wash from outside. The kitchen itself is ample with a counter that doubles as a form-fitting sink cover below the hi-rise kitchen faucet. Next to it is something a bit different – a Furrion glass top oven. It has the usual three burners and the gas oven; however, the flip-up glass acts as another counter space and doubles as a back-splash when the cook-top is in use. Above it is a range hood with exhaust fan and a built-in microwave oven. The matte-finished stainless steel 6-cu.ft. fridge/freezer is built into the cabinet to the right. Cupboards, drawers and general storage are well-designed, nicely finished and have direct and indirect lighting. The garage area of the trailer is made livable by deploying three fold-out (three-person) couches. These easily fold up, lying as flat as possible against the walls to open up the garage space for toys in transit. The flooring is a durable, easy-to-clean laminate. There are flush-mounted D-rings in the floor to securely tie-down the toys. Once those are unloaded, the D-rings lie flat and then those couches fold back down in less than a minute to create the main living space. These couches can also double as overnight accommodation – mostly for kids is my guess. However, my tester was outfitted with an optional Happi-Jac power bunk ($2,000). As the name implies, it’s a full-width (90-inches) powered bed that lowers from a flush ceiling storage position to mid-height. With the provided access ladder, you have a large bunk with a proper mattress for overnight guests – or regulars. AUG/SEPT 2019 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 53
