Chevrolet Expands Midsize Truck Lineup with New Colorado ZR2 Offerings
C
hevrolet has expanded its midsize truck lineup by offering two new special editions of the Colorado ZR2 called the Midnight Edition and Dusk Edition. Unveiled ahead of their public debut at the SEMA Show, the 2018 Colorado ZR2 Midnight Edition features an all-black exterior finish, black bowtie emblems and 17-in. five spoke black accessory wheels. Also featured are a black sport bar with offroad LED lighting and ZR2 logos on the sport bar sail panels. The 2018 Dusk Edition of the ZR2 will feature the same content as the ZR2 Midnight but can be purchased in all other offered colours with black accents used throughout. As you likely already know, the Colorado ZR2 is an off-road oriented version of the regular mid-size Colorado that is equally as comfortable during off-road situations as it is during daily driving situations. It features an off-road suspension with cast-iron control arms and Multimatic DSSV dampers which are the first off-road shocks to feature position-sensitive spool valve technology. The ZR2 is further distinguished visually with an aggressive hood and grille combo and modified front and rear bumpers. It comes with the standard 3.6L V6 engine paired to an 8-speed auto transmission, or the available 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel which produces an impressive 369 lb-ft of torque. Tesla Finally Officially Unveils Semi Truck After what has seemed like a long wait, Tesla finally unveiled their Semi Truck at a recent event in Hawthorne, California. Company CEO Elon Musk was of course the person to helm the unveiling which featured two examples of the truck roll on stage showcasing their futuristic appearance. The truck will reportedly utilize four electric motors with two at each axle behind the cab which Tesla claims will propel the Semi truck from 0-60 mph (100km/h) in 5.0 seconds with an empty trailer and 20 seconds at its max gross weight of 80,000 lbs. (36,287 kg). Also with a full load going up a 5 percent grade, the truck will be able to reach 65 mph (105 km/h) which is 20 mph more than a traditional diesel rig which can reach up to 45 mph (72 km/h). According to Tesla’s website, the truck will have a 300 or 500 mile range (483 km and 805 km respectively) and will consume less than 2 kWh per mile. Inside the truck features a centralized driving position which Musk claims will help visibility but has been heavily questioned by many since the unveiling with some current truck drivers weighing in suggesting that it may cause more problems than it solves. Also featured on the truck is Tesla Armor Glass which Musk says is explosion-proof. Trucks can now be reserved for a small $20,000 USD fee and are expected to carry MSRPs of $150,000 USD for the 300 mile range version and $180,000 for the 500 mile offering.

100 Years of Ford Trucks Ford starts second century of truck making in 2018
T
he first Henry Ford-designed truck was sold to a company named Newcomb, Endicott & Co. on Jan. 12, 1900. However, the vehicle was not a Ford product. The 1,250-lb. Delivery Wagon was priced at $1,000 and built by the Detroit Automobile Co., for which Ford worked as an engineer. Some early Fords carried “aftermarket” commercial truck bodies and “Ford Delivery Cars” were produced on the Model C, Model E and Model T chassis. But the first “real” Ford truck arrived years later. This 1-ton Model TT truck made its debut in 1917, the year that Model Ts switched from brass radiators to black radiators. The Model TT was essentially a big Model T with a lengthened chassis, lower gearing and a worm-type rear axle. TTs had open cabs and, on the earliest versions, solid-rubber tires. The TT was launched with an introductory price of $600, but would sell for as low as $325 in 1926. By 1923, the Ford truck adopted pneumatic rear tires and, by 1924, an enclosed cab and balloon style tires were introduced. Over a million Model TT trucks were sold in 10 years, and TT sales represented 51 percent of the total market for trucks in America by 1926. Ford’s competitor – Chevrolet – had less than two percent of the market! The first factory-produced Ford pickup truck arrived in the spring of 1925. It was basically a Model T runabout with optional pickup box. In 1926, nickel radiators were used to dress up the long-lasting Model T and make it more competitive with the fast-growing Chevrolet.
Story and photos by John Gunnell, additional photos courtesy of Ford
Changes like this were carried over on the Model T and TT trucks, which also vanished when the last of fifteen million Model Ts was produced in May of 1927. Ford’s factory-built line of trucks was expanded in 1928, when the Model A debuted. Added to the catalog was a Delivery Car and Ford’s first real panel delivery truck. In addition to the half-ton Model A chassis, buyers could get the new Ford as a closed-cab pickup, an open-cab pickup, a canopy delivery, a screen-side delivery, a panel truck or a sedan delivery. In 1931, a natural wood panel called the Special Panel and a drop-floor panel delivery were added. There were a few oddities beyond the regular models, such as a special high-side Deluxe Pickup that was rare when new and a fancy Town Car Delivery truck with an open chauffeur’s compartment and crystal-glass sidelights. Ford complemented the small Model A trucks with a larger Model AA 1-1/2-ton series with the same basic power train, but a longer chassis, heavier springs, worm-drive axles, heftier wheels and so on. By 1929, the AA switched to a spiral bevel rear axle, a four-speed transmission and steel disc wheels. Dual rear wheels were then made available as optional equipment. In 1931, the Model AA cab was nicely updated and the rear suspension was improved. A 13-ft. long-wheelbase version was added. By 1930, Ford Motor Co. was selling something in the neighbourhood of 200,000 trucks per year, making it far and away the largest producer of commercial vehicles in the world. The big news for 1932 wasn’t a new model, but the debut of a soon-to-be-legendary power plant — the Ford flathead V8. However, it wasn’t available on commercial vehicles until late in the model year and most 1932 Ford trucks had a four-cylinder engine.

A 1930 Ford Model AA stake body truck at the 2017 car show in King, Wisconsin. In 1938, a series of one-ton trucks joined the line. A 3/4-ton series was added in late 1939. Ford made one of the best-looking 1/2-ton pickups of all time in 1940. Its front-end styling was similar to, but not interchangeable with, the attractive passenger car. Even the cab was improved to give it a more car-like appearance. In 1948, the F-1 was Ford’s first postwar vehicle. Handsome styling made it a standout from the start. In 1953, Ford stylists topped themselves with the beautiful F-100 series. Here was a truck anyone would be proud to park in front of his or her house. The 1953-1956 Ford F-100s are among the most desirable pickups ever produced. In 1957, F-100 styling changed. The new models were attractive, but some said they lacked the classic beauty of their predecessors. Good news for the year was the introduction of Ranchero. This unique vehicle was like nothing else on the road. It combined passenger car styling and interior appointments with pickup truck practicality. It would be two years before Chevrolet could catch up and offer a competitive model. The year 1961 saw the introduction of the Econoline van. This was one of the most significant vehicles of the postwar era. Not only did it have 39 percent more load space than a conventional 1/2-ton panel truck, but it was also easier to manoeuvre and could go almost twice as far on a gallon of gasoline. Over 600 truck models were offered by Ford in 1962. In 1963, light-duty models got a new grille. A diesel engine was available in some larger F-Series trucks. By 1965, model-year production was 391,524 including the Falcon Ranchero, and sedan delivery, the Econoline Bus and Station Bus, the F-Series and P-series parcel delivery van. Ford was America’s number two truck-maker in 1966, a record sales season. Innovations included a redesigned Ranchero and the debut of
the original Bronco. For 1968, Fords offered a new Flex-O-Matic rear suspension (standard on F-250s and optional on F-100s). The Ranchero grew five inches and a vinyl top was a new option. Ford built 626,585 trucks in 1970. A new Explorer Special option featuring Shetland plaid upholstery was introduced. An automatic choke became standard on light trucks. F-100s had fibreglass-belted tires. Other new features for F-100s included a simulated vinyl cab roof and optional sliding rear cab window. The company offered over 1,300 separate models including medium- and heavy-duty trucks during 1970. Ford dealers delivered a record 735,370 trucks to customers in 1971. The Econoline/Club Wagon received new front-ends, optional power steering and high-capacity air conditioning. Rancheros had a new front end. Ford’s North American truck sales totalled 795,987 units in 1972, a new record, and calendar-year production topped that of Chevrolet. A Super Camper Special arrived in 1973. The Supercab pickup was introduced in 1974 when Ford’s sales total of 886,708 beat Chevrolet’s 885,362. By the mid-1970s, vans had evolved from work vehicles into play machines for the young and Ford was first to offer a van especially for this market. The 1976 Cruising Van came customized from the factory. About the same time, Ford truck introduced the Bronco. The Gen 1 Bronco was rather Spartan, but when the Gen 2 Bronco came along in 1978, it was one of the more opulent vehicles Ford sold. It was based on the F-series pickup and the closest many would get to off road use was driving in inclement weather. By 1978, the Ford F-100 became the best-selling truck in the country. It repeated that achievement year after year. At the time of Ford’s 70th anniversary of light-truck manufacturing, the F-Series was the best-selling vehicle in North America. That year, the mildly restyled F-Series boasted the first anti-lock brake system on a light truck. A 1947 Ford truck pulls this streamlined Weber tanker body. It was seen at the ATHS Convention in 2017.

the 2000 Excursion, based on the new F-350, impacted Chevrolet/GMC Suburban sales. By this time, the sport utility vehicle market had become so dominant that, for 2001, over 50 percent of all Ford’s vehicle sales were truck sales. Early in 2002, Ford Div. took more IntelliChoice awards for full-size trucks than any competitor. It won seven “Best Overall Value of the Year Awards.” A new Ranger FX4 model also bowed that year. Ford said that it was designed to appeal to Ranger XLT Extended Cab buyers who wanted to do some serious off-roading. While the Gen11 F-Series boasted some structural changes, this generation also saw the introduction of the Triton engine. More appearance
This beautifully preserved original-paint 1970 Ford F-250 has the Sport Custom trim and options package. The year 1980 marked the first time since 1957 that Ford did not offer the Ranchero. Light-duty truck sales were down 31 percent and reflected the buying public’s concern over rising gas prices, soaring interest rates and a generally weak economy. Ford made numerous changes to its 1981 trucks to improve their fuel economy. An automatic overdrive transmission became available in trucks powered by a 302-cid (5.0-litre) V8, while standard pickups with the base 300-cid six-cylinder engine and four-speed overdrive manual transmission received a 21 mpg EPA fuel economy rating. An all-new, compact-size Ranger pickup entered production in Louisville, Ken., in January 1981. Ford again remained America’s number one truck manufacturer, even though its sales dropped another 9.8 percent in reaction to the fuel crisis and sick national economy. During 1982, Ford continued to outsell Chevrolet in six segments of the truck market, but Chevy’s new S-10 Pickup and S-10 Blazer pushed its business back into the top sales rank for the first time in six years. changes came for the Gen 12 F-Series trucks which offered improved strength and comfort. A V8 engine became standard in all F-Series trucks and a new six-speed automatic transmission was offered. In 2010, Ford unveiled its first truck created for off-road racing. The F-150 SVT Raptor came with Fox Racing shocks, upgraded suspension, wider fenders, higher ride height, 35-inch all-terrain tires and an updated stability-control system. The SVT Raptor was a beast designed for desert racing and trail riding. With the initial model sporting a 5.4L V8 with 310 hp, the engine was upgraded to a 6.2L with 400 hp a year later. Ford began offering a more fuel efficient, yet powerful, 3.5L direct-injected twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 engine for the standard F-150 in 2011. This engine was only available with an automatic transmission and quickly earned high ratings. Beginning in 2015 and still in production, the Gen13 F-Series trucks received several updates, including a new military-grade aluminum-alloy F-150 body. By using aluminum, Ford removed 700 lbs. of weight. The Super Duty truck lineup received the same aluminum-based bodies for the Ford truck’s 100th anniversary in 2017. The Gen2 Ford F-150 Raptor could be had with a 450-hp EcoBoost V6 and 10-speed automatic transmission. The 2017 F-150 was honoured as best-selling truck for the last four decades.
downsized Ranger pickup made its official debut in March 1982 as an early 1983 model and Ford regained its traditional first in sales rank back from Chevy. Total sales for the year were 991,958 units and F-series Pickups alone came to 453,108 units. Chrysler invented the minivan in 1984 and by December 1984 Ford was planning to go into production with a new Aerostar Minivan made at a plant in St. Louis, Mo. Unfortunately, technical delays held up the launch of the Aerostar and cost the company the top sales rank in the industry for 1985. It was introduced in the summer of 1985 as a 1986 model. The new model proved popular and Ford’s calendar-year sales hit a record high of 1,381,438 trucks, giving Ford back the first rank on U.S. sales charts. The Explorer was introduced in mid-1990, as a replacement for the twodoor-only Ranger-based Bronco II. In less than one year, it was the most popular sport utility vehicle on the market. The 1990s saw the rise of the baby boomer and the Explorer four-door suited them. In 1997, the Expedition—a four-door-only SUV based on a revised F-150 - stole sales. Then,

But, back to the fair. Under the sheets at the media roll-out were two special edition pickups - a Silverado and a Colorado painted in a distinctive Centennial Blue paint and sporting exclusive heritage bowtie emblems next to 100-year badges on the doors. This unique bowtie takes its inspiration from Chevy badges of the past – using colours from the early years of truck production and a highlighting font that came out of the Chevy design archives. It most closely resembles bowties found on the trucks of the 1930’s. Each of these very special trucks will also feature a laundry list of one-time features.
n North America, one in five new trucks is sold in Texas. In a good year, that’s as many as 400,000 pickups being bought in the Lone Star State; so, is it any wonder that the annual State Fair of Texas, in Dallas, has become ground zero for new truck releases by all the manufacturers? Each year at the end of September, the builders compete with new truck reveals, or at least dropping special editions, with each brand trying to trump the other. Well, this year, Chevy has it hands down. For Chevrolet’s 100th anniversary of trucks, there really was never any question as to where the kickoff would take place – as it did just last week at what is the best attended truck show in the country. Close to two million people walk through the dedicated truck zone at the state fair; and at the Chevy display what they saw this year was truly unique. In fact, the state fair debut starts a 100-day clock of Chevy truck events that will culminate in another Texas event just before Christmas that looks to bring hordes of classic Chevy truck

The 1918 Chevrolet One-Ton truck was the first production pickup (if you can call it that) that came out of a Chevy factory. In fact it was inspired by shop trucks that workers had cobbled together to
move parts around inside the plant. Using the already established Series 490 car, they fashioned homemade flatbeds onto the rear frames. No doubt the debut of the first Ford truck just a few months prior added a spark to this introduction. This first One-Ton was powered by a four-cylinder, 36-hp engine. Its top speed was 25 mph. A century later, Chevy has built more than 85 million trucks.

What was also shown in Texas was a customized 1967 C-10. This show vehicle was built by the Chevy design team as a tribute to the brand. It’s beautifully done, going heavy on tradition and light on the mod; it, too, sports the special Centennial blue paint. After its stint in Texas, the C-10 moved on the SEMA show in Las Vegas. If you are already a “truck guy,” you know that this particular generation of pickup is highly collectable; in fact, Hagerty, the classic vehicle insurance company, says these late ‘60s-to-early ‘70s C-10s have doubled in value in just the last five years. However, it is curious that what was designed to be a purpose-built work vehicle has (50 years later) become a cultural icon, and a vehicle that tugs at the heart strings of all those folks who work with and love trucks. FEATURE: GM DIESEL ADDITION
GM’s Diesel Family is Growing
The 2018 Chevrolet Colorado offers the 2.8L Duramax turbo diesel as one of its three engine options.
Story and photos by Howard J Elmer
G
M’s newest diesel isn’t a heavy truck engine, it’s not a ground pounder, and its target market is very different from what most consumers think of as the diesel-powered niche in this country - pickup trucks. Called the Whisper Diesel, this new four-cylinder turbo-diesel comes from Europe and displaces just 1.6L. It was introduced by Mike Siegrist, GM regional chief engineer, at a media briefing in Toronto with the overall theme of “GM’s diesel future.”
This new engine is being put to work right away, with it currently being offered in the new 2018 Chevy Equinox. And, while it’s installed here, it’s built as an international collaboration. It was designed in Torino, Italy, while the hardware and transmission were sourced in Germany. Final assembly of the powertrain is at an engine plant in Hungary. As might be assumed, the Whisper Diesel is quiet, very quiet. To accomplish this, it uses an acoustic foam top cover, acoustic foamcovered injectors and common rail, as well as a clamshell manifold cover to help in achieving the quiet it’s becoming known for. However, the other factor in its virtual silence is actually a key design element. It was built utilizing a ten-step solenoid fuel injector. By spraying fuel in small bursts at various stages of compression, the Whisper Diesel stays quiet. Starting with a pre-combustion injection, it follows up with a varying number of rapid pre-ignition shots of fuel. This is what takes the big bang out of the diesel detonation. This system also reduces NOx generation and, of course, lowers the noise level. It also smooths out potential engine vibration. Post-combustion, the injector continues to input pulses to control exhaust gas temperature, burn off particulate matter and thereby further lower emissions. So, that’s the tech part – but for most consumers, what’s important is that it offers good torque and excellent fuel economy. For example, in the new Equinox, it makes 137 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque – 90% of which is said to be available across a wide rpm range of 1,500 to 3,250. Fuel consumption in the new Equinox is claimed to be 6.0L/100 km Hwy and 7.4L/100 km City. These numbers are better than most hybrids post, notes GM.

Still, for the moment, pickup trucks currently make up the largest North American vehicle segment that features diesel engines, but SUVs are catching up. GM predicts that by 2020, the SUV market will consume three million units annually – 16% of which will be diesel-powered. That’s 480,000 diesel engines. It’s this wider use of smaller diesel that will inevitably lead to wider general acceptance of these engines. On display at the introduction was, of course, the new 1.6L turbodiesel alongside the existing 2.8L and 6.6L. These are what are currently available in North America. However, on another note, there is an obvious hole in that lineup. A 4.0L offering aimed at half-ton pickups and larger SUVs (of which GM builds plenty) would certainly
The biggest of GM’s diesel offerings, the 6.6L Duramax V8. During the presentation, Dan Nicholson, VP of Global Propulsion, sketched out GM’s future with diesel. He says that light-duty diesel has a bright future in North America, with 11 diesel models being offered currently. Meanwhile, on the global scene, GM already offers 34 models. This global portfolio contains five engines ranging in displacement from 1.0L to 6.6L, though only three of these are currently available here. To pave the way for greater diesel penetration, GM is working to show North Americans the benefits of buying diesel engines. First off, says GM, a customer can realize a $7,000 savings over the life cycle of a GM vehicle – gas vs. diesel. This more than makes up for the higher up-front cost of a diesel engine, and resale remains higher as well. As for the technology itself, showing off the Whisper Diesel, demonstrates that the commonly held beliefs that diesel engines are slow, loud and dirty are simply no longer true. That’s GM’s message and its battle cry moving forward.
fit well into GM’s future diesel strategy. This speculation on my part makes sense by simply looking at the competition. Ram currently has a 3.0L diesel in its Ram 1500, while Nissan offers a 5.0L in its Titan and Ford has announced that the F-150 will get a 4.2L diesel engine option later in 2018. I asked this question of the VP and assembled engineers. They refused to comment on possible future product additions, but they were all smiling. I say another midsize diesel is coming. It’s not if – it is simply when.

In order to mate the 1971 Jeepster Commando to the brand new Jeep JKU chassis, Schlossberg had to completely modify the frame and suspension. ROAD TEST: NISSAN TITAN PRO-4X
Capable Half-Ton Story by Jordan Allan, photos courtesy of Nissan Canada
I
f you were to mention the Nissan Titan to anyone with something of an interest in trucks, it’s almost guaranteed that the first thing that would come to their mind would be the Titan XD. Introduced back in 2015 as a 2016 model, the Nissan Titan XD provides somewhat of a middle ground between half-ton and ¾-ton trucks thanks largely to its 5.0L twin-turbocharged Cummins V8 that pumps out an impressive 310 horsepower and 555 lb.-ft. and pushes towing capacity over 12,000 lbs. Although it sometime seems to get lost in the XD’s shadow, Nissan rolled out a new half-ton version of the Titan in the summer of 2016 that features the new generation looks introduced on the XD version. The half-ton is about 15-in. shorter than the XD and doesn’t offer a diesel engine, but what it does offer is an extremely capable, good looking pickup that should garner some attention away from Detroit’s Big 3. The Titan’s first generation of the half-ton hit the market for the 2004 model year as it attempted to establish itself as a true player in the ultra-competitive light-truck market here in North America. After some success early on, the Titan probably wasn’t quite as successful as Nissan had hoped for. Near the end of its run, the Titan became very dormant and saw very little changes or upgrades made until they finally stopped production after 2015. After a one year hiatus for 2016, Nissan finally introduced the 2nd generation half-ton Titan and almost immediately it garnered more attention than its predecessor. It features a much better look, offers an upgraded and more powerful V8 engine, and offers numerous interior and bed storage solutions. The aforementioned upgraded V8 engine option is currently standard across all trims and is an upgraded version of the same 5.6L V8 engine found in the previous Titan. Power has been increased to 390 horsepower and 394 lb-ft. of torque and despite the higher output there has also been an improvement when it comes to fuel economy with the new version rated at 14.2 L/100 km in combined city/highway driving which is a full 3.0 L/100 km improvement over the previous version. Inside of the Titan features a much more refined interior design than the outgoing model. The cabin is very spacious and provides enough room to comfortably seat 5 adults, while the rear passenger area offers many
48 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2017
great storage options such as a cab-width lockable bin with dividers located under the rear seats. This option comes as an option on the SV trim and standard on all above trims, as does the foldable cargo platform that can be accessed once the rear seats are flipped up. Behind the wheel is probably where the 2017 Titan is most impressive as it features an ultra-smooth seven-speed automatic transmission paired to the V8 engine which work together to provide ample acceleration. The Bilstein coil-over suspension found on our PRO-4X test model made for an overall enjoyable ride and despite the fairly large size of the truck, it feels like you’re driving something much smaller. The steering feel is definitely one of the highlights of the truck as it provides sharp a response at lower speeds, making it easier to navigate city driving situations and enabling better handling at highway speeds, taking sharp corners with ease. While the Nissan Titan may not quite match up with some of its competition when it comes to things like payload and towing limits, its versatility is unquestionable. If you are a truck buyer who requires hauling heavier loads – the larger XD probably better suited for you. However, if you like the idea of a truck that can haul people with everyday loads and performs well in light off-roading back country conditions, the regular Titan is a very capable choice. It’s been rumored that a V6 engine offering is coming soon for the Titan halfton, as is a King Cab version, both of which will serve to add to the versatility of Nissan’s truck lineup - welcome additions necessary to compete in this well contested segment. When taking into consideration Nissan’s advertised 5 year/ 160,000 KM bumper to bumper warranty and after spending a week driving this latest version, I see no reason why it wouldn’t compete very well for any new light-truck buyers consideration.
FEATURE: TOWING VEHICLES
Spec’ing Your New Tow Vehicle
Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of the manufacturers
Trailer specifications list: Have these numbers in hand when on the hunt.
Y
Max trailer gross weight, Tongue or pin (fifth wheel) weight, Length, Axles, Brakes (Yes or No), Hitch type, Ball size, Electrical connector needed: 4 or 7-pin.
ou’re an RVer and general recreational hauler. You tow various trailers, not every day, but often enough that when you are in the market for a new vehicle you consider it a tow vehicle first and foremost. Does this describe you? If so, then a trip to any auto dealer has to be with your “must have” list in hand, one that is very different for folks of the non-towing variety. That list, and the reason for it, is the point of this story. Let’s get the obvious out of the way first: trailers come in all sizes and with various purposes. They can weigh 200 to 30,000 lbs. If you own one, you already know what it weighs and this is the first note on your list.
Unless you are completely new to recreational towing (in which case, welcome!) you no doubt already have a tow vehicle or memories of one. This real-world trailering experience you possess is valuable; it is the basis of your new must-have list. Not just what you want but, perhaps more importantly, what you don’t want. Negative experiences tend to leave lasting impressions. As we are discussing the towing of a wide spectrum of trailers, the vehicles available in the market today to tow them are just as wide. Certainly, pickup trucks are the most favoured tow vehicles, but many smaller cars, SUVs and minivans can make fine tow vehicles when paired and equipped correctly. However, before we get to your must-have list, here is a general list of what you don’t want.
Next, know all the specs as they relate to your trailer. Once you begin a conversation at the dealership, be prepared to educate the sales people – very few know anything about towing (with a few exceptions) and less about what’s available on the vehicles they sell. They will, however, be able to look it up once you tell them what you need. Of course, there will be lots of other considerations in your new vehicle search – personal wants, family needs, cargo requirements, drivetrain variations... to name a few, but if it won’t tow right, what’s the point? In fact, before the salesperson points you towards the pretty shiny red one, refer to your list and have them confirm it will do the job you need it to do – then go look at it. 50 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2017
• If the vehicle you’re looking at doesn’t offer a towing package, you might find some aftermarket components for it, but I’d prefer to buy the vehicle with a tow package installed. Without a tow package, there won’t be a factory wiring harness and no technical allowances made for transmission gearing or auxiliary cooling. • How will it handle? Look at the overhang. Overhang is measured from the rear axle to the hitch ball. This measurement is then taken as a percentage of the wheelbase - anything less than 30% is good, with less being better. The simple reason is that more trailer weight is transferred directly to the rear axle. Conversely, a long overhang acts like a teeter-totter - it can affect steering. A weight-distributing hitch will counteract much of this sag – but, shorter is still better. • Avoid short wheelbases and tall vehicles (sorry, Jeep CJ). Look for a low centre of gravity on a long wheelbase .This vehicle will usually come with stiffer suspension that will discourage side-to-side motion in cross-winds.
Be prepared for products that will change the way you and others look at your truck. Drawing from 30 years experience in the aftermarket and Original Equipment industry, we are able to bring you the highest quality parts available using state of the art technology combined with old fashioned hard work. Iron Cross prides itself as one of the only remaining 100% American made manufacturers of automotive accessories.
• Turbo-charged gasoline engines make more power than normally aspirated ones. However, when towing, their fuel economy is also much worse. Consider how often and long you tow. • Rear-end gear ratios can change torque numbers by requiring more or less rpms to complete a tire revolution. Always consider your trailer weight and geographic region when ordering the rear-end gear ratio. For instance with a lower ratio (like 4:10 to 1) you can create more power and torque with a smaller displacement engine. • Some manufacturers will offer different transmissions with the same engine – consider these from a weight bearing and fuel economy standpoint.
• Tall, knobby tires look good, but aren’t for towing. A low-profile tire that doesn’t bulge over the rim will give you much better steering feel and control. Check the tires to see if they are stamped with either a P indicating passenger car or LT meaning light truck (these are often available on minivans and SUVs). The difference is in the sidewall stiffness and the weight capability. Depending on the load range, LT tires can carry upwards of 60 psi vs. 35 psi in the same size P-tire. You may be able to specify them when you order. Features you’ll want on your must-have list: • If the manufacturer offers a tow package on the vehicle, buy it. Trailer wiring will have been factory engineered – less chance of problems. The hitch is attached to where the designers intended and vehicle engineers will have included extras like tranny coolers, an extra battery, bigger radiator and different transmission gearing, as well as offering lower rear differential drive ratios. Not only does this option eliminate any issues over voiding a factory warranty, but it means you only have one source to deal with if any issues arise.
Today there is also a third area of knowledge needed when spec’ing a new tow vehicle. This concerns the new electronic “driver-assist” features available (or coming) to the brand you are interested in. I’m sending you off to do this homework because after more than a decade of concentrating on horsepower and weight bearing capability advancements, I see manufacturers’ now shifting focus towards offering more driver-assist systems. These are necessary to handle the larger trailers they’ve designed their vehicles to tow. These features are coming quickly; with many being debuted in just the last year or two. So, knowing about these is important to any future buying decision. How important? Think of it this way - the heavier the load, the more “driver-assist” features you will want and appreciate in your tow vehicle. These include electric steering to hold the crown of the road: variable steering that changes ratios at different speeds; exhaust braking to save the vehicle brakes; integrated trailer brake controller for smoother
• Do they offer tow mirrors? Get them. Even with small trailers, good mirrors are important. And while you would think heated tow mirrors would be a standard feature when ordering the tow package, they often are not. Ask about this. Being able to see all the way down the side of your trailer is the law most everywhere. • Compare brands by looking for the largest brake rotors and whether they offer a tow/haul transmission mode – or at least a manual shifting option on an automatic transmission. • Integrated trailer brake controller. Most factory tow packages now include the controller, but not all. Check to be sure. • Exhaust brake (with diesel engines). Whether automatic or manually activated, this is a feature you’ll want. Matching the Powertrain to your intended load. • Gas or Diesel? V6 or V8? Turbo or not? Transmission type? What about gear ratios? These are a few of the questions you’ll have to answer when spec’ing your new vehicle. Because of the work you’ve already done in regards to choosing your tow package based on the weight and needs of your trailer, you’ll have already narrowed the options for matching powertrains to just a few. Now check the manufacturer’s website to find out what the powertrain in your chosen body style will tow. This research is particularly important because manufacturers' advertising tends to tout only the highest tow numbers they offer, without explaining which version of the vehicle it applies to. Past this, here are a few general rules-of-thumb to consider: • A diesel engine will always give you more torque than a similarly sized gasoline engine. Where this matters is in mountainous terrain where long grades require more low-rpm torque to hold posted speeds. 52 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2017
stopping; anti-sway trailer control; interactive cruise control to hold set speed; multi-camera blind-spot detection for close quarters and passing situations; manual gear selection; tow/haul mode for managing power and trailer tire pressure monitoring. And, there are more of these electronic assists coming each year. Interactive cruise control is a good example of an anxiety-relieving device. Available in most new trucks now, it joins several systems (ABS activated braking, transmission gearing, exhaust braking, and radar) to manage even a heavy load. With this cruise set, a large rig can drive up and down long steep highway grades, holding a set speed without the fear of over speeding. The driver just has to steer. Each of these features is aimed at easing the towing burden of the driver. The net result? Less anxiety and a safer drive. That is what a well-chosen tow vehicle should do for you whether your trailer weighs 200 lb or 30,000. It should carry the load safely and give you calm, towing confidence, and it all starts with knowing how to spec that next tow vehicle.
RV-ING: 2018 KEYSTONE BULLET COLT 172RBCT
Ready for Adventure
Story and photos by Howard J Elmer
K
eystone advertises its new Bullet Colt as being “ready for adventure.” A marketing tagline? Sure. But it’s also a clue to its intended purpose – which is giving you a complete, smaller, base camp. One you can tow to right where you want to do something. The Colt is one of the new wave of lightweight travel trailers that are aimed at an active, adventuresome RVing demographic. Now, some people will read that statement as meaning “appealing to younger
buyers.” Age, though, has nothing to do with adventure and the spirit that drives it. Well, that’s my attitude anyway – and being that I’m coming up on 60, I do think about it a bit. So, my first impression of the Bullet Colt is that I would make it a useful companion for whatever outdoor passion I chose to pursue. Weighing in at a GVWR of 3,900 lb (which includes 1,100 lb of cargo), the Colt can be towed by a wide variety of today’s vehicles. A truck is not necessary, and this frees up many potential buyers from having to change their daily driver to accommodate the weight of the trailer. In my case, I borrowed a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee (SRT) which was more than adequate for the job. In fact, the growth of the Canadian mid-size SUV market increases the number of models that would serve as a good tow vehicle for this trailer every year. This consideration simplifies the purchase and can save money. The first look at the trailer shows off the classic teardrop shape of the shell – a design feature that equals strength and maximum space. You’ll also note that the wheels are mounted outboard of the body. This makes the trailer more stable, saves space otherwise needed for inside wheel wells and lifts the body – all the better to traverse rougher terrain. The 15-inch radial tires are attached to independent torsion-bar axles with super-lube hubs, and they ride on aluminum wheels. Considering where this trailer might go, the drain pipes are reasonably high under the body; my only concern is with the spare tire which hangs below the A-frame tongue. That I find too low.
54 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2017
the summer heat, there is a powered vent fan and a roof-mounted 13.5K AC unit. So, I’ve said this is a smaller trailer which is also lightweight, but it does have a single slideout which it uses to great interior benefit. This flush-floor slide uses what’s called the Schwintek slideout system. It’s built by Lippert Components and uses rail-mounted gears with electric motors, as you’d expect. However, all the aluminum components are mounted in the slide-out itself. This saves space and lets the box be secured at all four corners to prevent leaks.
Construction of the trailer is mostly welded aluminum walls on a steel frame. The wall covering is two-tone gelcoat fibreglass with a one-piece seamless fibreglass roof above. The windows are tinted and large with an automotive frameless look. The doors are all radiused and feature rubber seals. This unit is built for three-season usage - with R7 insulation in the sidewalls and R9 in the roof and floor. However, the water and waste tanks are not heated, so that precludes camping in consistent freezing temps, but with a 20K BTU furnace it will be comfortable in the shoulder seasons. For
56 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2017
My tester has nicely cubed the entire kitchen array into this slide. It is accessible when closed. When open, though, it makes for a central galley and offers up good floor space. The kitchen itself has a deep counter with a glass-topped two-burner stove next to a deep stainless steel sink with a gooseneck faucet. A sliding window with mini-blind sheds light on the food prep area. All this sits on top of the storage drawers and a large cabinet. The two-way, three-cubicfoot refrigerator is also stainless steel, as is the built-in convection microwave above it. Turn 180-degrees and you’re facing the twoseat dinette. By the way, the interior height is 6’6”. That dinette table also doubles as the base for a single bed, or take it outside to set up - it does that too. In fact, the designers of the Colt assume you’ll spend considerable time outside of the trailer, and so have provided a number of features for that purpose. Such as: exterior LED lights, an LP quick-connect for the BBQ, exterior speakers that run off a Bluetooth stereo, an outdoor shower, 120V plug, and a Thule awning to cover that alfresco living space. There is also a pass-thru storage at the front of the trailer accessible from either side. This is below the 60x74inch Queen Bed. It’s worth mentioning that the Colt has two different floorplans with two very different intentions. They both fit in the same shell and use the same single slide-out. The best way to label the difference between the two, though, is to state that one model (the one I tested) would be home to two people, while the other would support four.
The key difference between them is the bathroom size. The bath space in my tester is large, particularly for a trailer of just 20-feet. It has a full corner shower stall, plenty of room around the Thetford toilet, and a freestanding cabinet and sink. The other floorplan setup creates a “wet” bath design. This much smaller space has features that can get wet as the smaller shower is in use. However, in this
floorplan, the dinette seats four, not two – it also moves the kitchen to the rear of the trailer where the counter space is doubled. So, depending on your stage in life, you have choices. The trailer is equipped with a 55 Amp shore power hookup that includes a converter with a house-battery charger. All the key appliances are two-way; including the water heater, so being plugged-in is no problem. But then, we have been talking about adventure and that often takes you off the grid. The Colt has a solar prep package that accepts a Go Power! solar charging system. Its flexible panels fit flush on the roof. But for more traditional camping, there is a pair of 12V house batteries, 20 lb propane tank and plenty of water. A weekend of boondocking should be no problem. By the time you read this review, the Canada 150 celebrations will be over, but as many of you know, Parks Canada gave out free passes across the country, and it’s my hope that lots of people made use of them. I’m sure that most visitors were those who would normally take in the parks – but I’d think that a lot of first-time visits occurred too. These are the people who have likely gotten their first taste of outdoor adventure; loved it and are now thinking about the coming summer. Well, welcome - we have such a diverse and wonderful country to experience and a trailer like the Colt is a great way to get you started on a lifetime of outdoor wonder.

The heavy-duty 1.25-in. chromoly tubular construction and reinforced pivot bushing mounts are used to eliminate flex and handle the added load from extreme suspension cycling. The control arms line has been expanded to include the 2015-18 GM Colorado/Canyon twins, the 2004-2018 Ford F-150, 2009-2018 Ram 1500, and Nissan Titan XD. The white truck better hope the red truck doesn’t get stuck trying to get to him.
Would’ve loved to see how they got this one out.

Well, at least they have some man power to try and get that thing out of there. We’re sure that most of you have had the misfortune of getting stuck while out on a weekend adventure.
