GMC Announces First-Ever 2024 Sierra EV
GMC has introduced its first-ever 2024 Sierra EV as it looks to expand its lineup of all-electric trucks that already features the GMC HUMMER EV Pickup and SUV. We Canadians will have to wait, as GMC also announced that the 2024 model will not be available in Canada, but we should be expecting our first crack at the electric pickup for the 2025 model year. The 2024 model will be led by the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 that offers a GM-estimated 644 km of range on a full charge. GMC says it will introduce a new Sierra EV AT4 and Elevation trims for 2025, so we may have a few more options before it’s available north of the 49th. GM estimates the truck will produce 754 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque in Max Power mode, while an onboard Power Station Pro turns the truck into a mobile power source, capable of providing up to 10.2kW of off-board power. 800-volt DC Public Fast Charging capable at up to 350kW (which is hard to find in Canada currently) enables up to 160 km of range in approximately 10 minutes. A massive 16.8-in-diagonal freeform infotainment system touchscreen will be front and centre and an eTrunk will increase cargo capacity with a lockable, weatherproof compartment at the front of the vehicle where an engine usually would be. The truck will feature up to 9,500 lbs max towing capacity and an estimated 0-60 mph acceleration in less than 4.5 seconds. The exterior features a sleek, modernized look that is still distinctly a GMC truck, and an Air Ride Adaptive Suspension system is able to raise and lower the truck roughly 2-in. The truck will feature Regen on Demand braking, One-Pedal Driving and 4-Wheel Steer with CrabWalk as found on the HUMMER EV. The 2024 Sierra EV is expected to land Stateside in early 2024. We will keep you updated as more information is shared regarding the 2025 model.
NOThis winter say no to snow and yes to WeatherTech. Just like a snowflake, the WeatherTech FloorLiner has unique curves and contours designed to perfectly fit the floor of your specific vehicle. But instead of leaving you with cold feet and soggy carpets, the WeatherTech FloorLiner will keep your boots clean and your carpets pristine. And with a lifetime guarantee, it’s tough enough to handle any winter adventure for as long as you own your vehicle.
Mopar Unveils Three New Custom Concept Vehicles at SEMA
Mopar unveiled three new custom concept vehicles at November’s SEMA Show, which showcased hundreds of factory-backed performance parts and accessories. Found at their familiar spot in the lower South Hall at the show, the three new vehicles joined a plethora of additional custom vehicles from Mopar. The Jeep CJ Surge electromod concept is up first and is powered by a custom propulsion system with a scalable 400-volt, 200kW Electric drive module mounted to the frame with custom-designed solid motor mounts. Power is supplied to all four wheels by 24 lithium-ion battery modules with torque running through a two-speed transfer case with selectable gearing. The Jeep rides on 35-in. BFGoodrich all-terrain tires with a 2-in. lift kit and 18x9-in. Black Rhino wheels. Next up was the Ram 1500 TRX Gold Shot concept that is built upon the 702-horsepower Ram 1500 TRX and featured a satin yellow/satin black colour theme with massive TRX side graphics. The truck sits on custom-designed 18x9.5-in. wheels and behind the cab sits a pair of concept 14-in. TYRI rectangular LED lights that generate 4,300 lumens of bright light. Lastly, the Ram 1500 Backcountry X concept is for those who want to combine work and play and builds upon the class-exclusive RamBox cargo management system with custom RamPack and RamRack features that increase secure storage space. On the inside of the tailgate you’ll find a custom Mopar RamGate task-bench that provides various conversion charts and an angle finder coupled with an array of Rockler woodworking hardware. The truck sits on a Mopar 2-in. lift kit with FOX shocks and stands out with its two-tone Matte Iced Silver Titanium and matte-black exterior.
SEMA Announces New Product Award Winners
At the recent 2022 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, SEMA announced the Best New Product Award Winners which are given to the most innovative and cutting-edge automotive aftermarket products that will be available in 2022. The annual competition is judged in 18 award categories with each category naming one winner and two runners-up. Nearly 2,000 products were entered into the running with winners being selected on a variety of factors including superiority of innovation, technical achievement, quality and workmanship, consumer appeal, marketability and more. The Exterior Accessory Product category saw Trail FX’s Angled Front Fender Flare for Ford Bronco take home the top honour with Armor Box by Hammerhead Armor and the Classic Ski Rack from SeaSucker being named runners-up. RockJock 4x4 by John Currie took home the top prize in the Off-Road/4-Wheel Drive Product category while SeaSucker was at it again, this time winning the Van/Pickup/Sport-Utility category with their Monkey Bars (Ridge Ready). Toyo Tires’ new Open Country R/T Trail tire was named runner-up in the Tire and Related Product category, losing out to Maxxis new Victra Sport EV, and the Wheel and Related Product category was won by MMX Wheels with ICON Vehicle Dynamics and Quadratec wheels announced as the runners-up. The full list of each category and their winners can be found at www.sema.org
Top Trending Vehicles Announced at 2022 SEMA Show
The SEMA Awards are presented at the SEMA Show each year to exhibiting OEMs as a way to recognize automakers for supporting the aftermarket with vehicle platforms that encourage customization. Six awards in six categories were given out this year with voting done by exhibiting part manufacturers. “The SEMA Award recognizes the hottest new vehicles on the market that offer the greatest opportunities for customization,” said Warren Kosikov, SEMA vice president of sales. “SEMA Award-winning vehicles are setting worldwide trends in the automotive enthusiast industry. The 2022 SEMA Show will have on display many of the SEMA Award winning vehicles, each customized in its unique way.” Given that both Ford and GM decided to pull out and not set up their usually very large exhibits this year, it should come as no surprise that Stellantis/Dodge/Jeep/Chrysler/etc. was a big winner this year, winning four out of six categories. The Dodge Challenger was named Car of the Year, 4x4/SUV of the Year went to the Jeep Wrangler, Full-size truck of the year is the Ram and mid-size truck of the year is the Jeep Gladiator. Rounding out the other 2 categories was the Toyota GR86 being named Sport Compact of the Year and the Volkswagen ID.4 taking home Electric Vehicle of the Year honours. Proving Grounds
The Texas State Fair in Dallas is attended by over three million people each September – reason enough to show off new trucks in a special area featuring all the brands at the show. Consider that the State of Texas buys more than three times the number of trucks than we do in all of Canada each year. For this very good reason, each of the domestic manufacturers, including Toyota and Nissan, has an extensive display at the fair – and if they want to show something off, it invariably comes to Texas first. This show has been going on since 1913, and that’s just one reason why I think its worth my time to attend each September.
New HD Trucks Debut at Texas State Fair
There is always something new at Texas, and sometimes new releases in the line-up offer a particularly interesting look at what’s coming. That was true this year as each of the Detroit builders showed their next generation of HD trucks. Each of these is coming next year. Here is a roundup of what I saw at the Fair - let’s start over at Ford.
On display was the next-generation (2023) Ford F-Series Super Duty – a favourite consumer tow vehicle. First off, I’ll point out a special sticker on the upper windshield of the truck that is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the F-Series this year – yes, it all started in 1948. Super Duty itself, as a stand-alone, is also 25 years old in ’23.
Much of what’s new in this Super Duty is unseen as it’s buried in the electronics which offer up more technology and driver assistance features than ever before. For instance; embedded 5G capability, enabling faster mapping, Wi-Fi and Ford Power-Up software updates while driving, plus all-new Trailer Navigation identifies the best real-time drive route to take based on your trailer size.
Other safety and security tech includes: Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go and Lane Centring - it automatically brakes and accelerates to a preset speed and helps keep the truck in its lane. Trailer Theft Alert will send an alert via the FordPass app should anyone attempt to disconnect the trailer when the truck is locked.
Forward/Reverse Sensing System helps drivers by showing objects immediately in front of the vehicle and warns when objects are near the front or rear of the vehicle. This feature can also include Front and Rear Brake Assist which automatically helps
Story and photos by Howard J Elmer, additional photos courtesy of the manufacturersprevent low-speed collisions by automatically detecting objects that may otherwise be hard to see.
A new full-colour head-up display helps keep eyes on the road by showing information right in the driver’s line of sight that changes with driving mode.
Also available on this 2023 Super Duty is Ford’s Pro Power Onboard – which provides power at a jobsite or a campground.
Ford has increased its power numbers and weight limits for 2023. Here they are:
The all-new standard engine in Super Duty is the 6.8L V8 gas engine which makes 405 hp and 445 lb-ft of torque. The new highoutput 6.7L Power Stroke diesel is now rated at 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. In addition to these two powertrains, you can opt for the regular output 6.7L diesel (475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft of torque) or the 7.3L gas engine (430 hp and 485 lb-ft of torque. All four of these engines are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
As for the new weight capacities, Ford is swinging for the fences:
• Best max gooseneck towing of 40,000 lb with F-450 pickup.
• Best max gooseneck in F-350/3500 DRW pickup 38,000 lb.
• Best max fifth-wheel towing of 35,000 lb with F-450 DRW pickup.
• Best max conventional towing at 30,000 lb.
• Best max conventional towing in the F350/3500 DRW 28,000 lb.
• Best max conventional towing in the F350/3500 SRW 25,000 lb.
• Best diesel F-250/2500 pickups segment max towing 23,000 lb.
• Best max 7.3L V8 gas F-350 DRW conventional towing of 22,000 lb.
Inside the new Super Duty cabin, new electronic and comfort features abound.
• An 8-inch centre display comes standard on the XL model; and a 12-inch display is standard with all higher trim levels.
• Available customizable 12-inch digital instrument cluster.
• Four USB power ports and available wireless charging pad.
• Centre console slot that holds a tablet upright to make using it easier when parked.
• Available Max Recline Seats that fold almost horizontal and lift the seat bottom up for a nearly flat surface to maximize comfort during downtime.
• Available 640-watt, eight-speaker B&O Sound System or 1,080-watt, 18-speaker B&O Unleashed Sound System by Bang & Olufsen for a fully-immersive audio experience.
• Alexa Built-in hands-free experience with complimentary connectivity to Alexa for up to three years.
Also on display at Texas was a Super Duty outfitted with the offroad Tremor package. This adds more off-road 4WD capability (with locking axles). This trend can be seen in all the brands as I
saw Ram and GM also offer up a Rebel, ZR2 and AT4-X version of their HD trucks at Texas.
Over at GMC was a new Sierra HD. In this case the new Sierra is a 2024. Yes, they skipped right over 2023 – though we will probably see this truck by late Spring 2023. Still, this skipping a model year shows their hurry to get this truck to market. The level of competition in this truck segment is fierce.
In the case of General Motors (I’m talking about GMC and Chevy here) part of this rush is their aim of getting the new half-ton in-
teriors into the HD trucks as soon as possible. This has been an issue in the past couple of years – one that’s now fixed.
The new Chevy they showed shares the underpinnings of the GMC – but that’s where the similarities end. These two sisters continue to separate their look and images. You can see it in the sheet metal and also in the trim packages being offered.
The 2024 Silverado HD has a freshened front-end that features a new fascia, new headlights, new grille and more. The truck has a chiseled look with C-shaped LED graphic lamps framing the new fascia. High Country models feature dual-projector technology. The main and high beams are now split into dual functions, which show off as an animated lighting sequence that welcomes or bids farewell to owners as they approach/leave the truck. As for the interior, Silverado will offer;
• A new interior for LT trim and up which features an all-new 13.4-inch-diagonal infotainment screen and 12.3-inch-diagonal configurable driver information centre.
• Trailering technology includes four new or enhanced features designed to inspire confidence and make towing easier.
• ZR2 to join Silverado HD lineup and a High Country Midnight Edition – late availability.
If one thing is certain though, looking at these two HDs, it's that GMC is now the “luxury” brand while Chevy is being positioned just one rung lower – and with more “work” options. This separation, from a marketing point-of-view, will serve a larger buyer group. This past summer, we saw new interiors in the 1500 series trucks, and in the case of the Sierra, a new trim package called the Denali Ultimate. Denali, of course, has been the top-of-the-line for GMC for a long time. But their customers told them that it just wasn’t cutting it anymore. So, we now have Ultimate – and as the name implies, it certainly is. Hence the rush to get it into the HD Sierra. However, load capability and safety systems have not
been neglected in this new HD either. The numbers are the same for GMC and Chevrolet.
New HD Highlights:
• Enhanced power with the combination of the available 6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8 coupled with a 10-speed Allison transmission delivering 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque. A new key
• Increased power and torque over the entire operating speed range.
• Improved engine braking with a more powerful turbo vane actuator and uprated valve springs.
• New cylinder heads with improved cooling jackets.
• An all-new combustion system within the heads that’s matched with next-generation, higher-flow injectors and greater fuel injection pressure.
• All-new engine controller.
• The Allison 10-speed automatic transmission is also paired with the Sierra HD’s standard 6.6L gas engine for 2024. It replaces the previous six-speed automatic, offering smaller “steps” between the gears, which enables the 6.6L gas engine to be held closer to its peak power (401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque) for longer periods.
Max towing across the lineup:
• Up to 21,900 lb. on Sierra Pro 2500HD Crew Cab
• Up to 22,500 lb. on Sierra Pro 2500HD – a 4,000-lb increase over current model
• Up to 36,000 lb. on Sierra Pro 3500HD
feature is 25-percent more low-end torque vs. the current model for a greater feeling of power on demand.
• Additional changes and upgrades offer a more efficient combustion and enhance performance. This latest Duramax engine adds additional refinements including:
• An all-new, more efficient turbocharger with improved efficiency to boost low-end torque.
• The most available trailering assistance technologies in the HD class through GMC’s ProGrade trailering system, offering up to 14 available camera views.
• Updated technologies including an available new, largest-in-class 13.4-inch-diagonal tablet-style infotainment touchscreen.
While the new Ultimate is the eye-catching centrepiece of the new
HD, it should be mentioned that the off-road trim and capability package (AT4X) will also be added. The lineup includes 2500HD and 3500HD models, in Regular Cab, Extended Cab and Crew Cab configurations, with dual-rear-wheel models available on 3500HD. Available trims include Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, Denali and Denali Ultimate, with that AT4X trim coming later in the model year.
So, what can you expect in a Sierra Denali Ultimate? Here is the list. Inside, Denali Ultimate’s exclusive Alpine Umber interior reaches new heights of premium luxury and comfort in a HeavyDuty truck. Full-grain leather appointments and open-pore Paldao wood adorn the interior trim. The wood’s darkened finish creates a distinctive colour blend, while the unique graining adds attention to detail.
Additional content includes:
• Full-grain leather-wrapped door panels with etched stainless-steel speaker grilles.
• Full-grain leather front and rear seats with the Denali Ultimate badge on the front seatbacks and centre console lid.
• New 16-way power-adjustable and massaging front seats.
• Premium microsuede headliner, visors and A- and B-pillar trim along with leather-wrapped A- and B-pillar handles.
• 12-speaker Bose Premium series with Center Point surround technology.
• Standard Rear Camera Mirror, with full camera display.
• Standard 15-inch-diagonal multicolour Head-Up Display.
• Standard power sunroof.
For those of us who tow – and who doesn’t with an HD truck? – here are the features that make that job easier:
• Available Enhanced, Transparent Trailer View for Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Trailering: Allows the driver to virtually “see through” the trailer. Using the camera mounted on the rear of the truck and an accessory camera on the back of the trailer, it pieces together a view of the area behind the truck and trailer as if the trailer was not there, helping to improve visibility.
• Available Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert: Extends side blind zone alerts to include the blind zone areas around the trailer.
• New GCW Alert: This all-new feature warns the driver if the vehicle and trailer weight exceed the vehicle’s Gross Combined Weight Rating.
• New, Available Adaptive Cruise Control with Trailering: Allows the Sierra HD’s available Adaptive Cruise Control to be used while
trailering and to account for additional drag and increased braking distances when towing a trailer.
In total, the 2024 Sierra Heavy Duty offers up to 14 available camera views including:
• Hitch Guidance with Hitch View provides a close-up view of the receiver hitch to help with alignment when connecting to a trailer.
• Bed View with Zoom and Bed Hitch Guidance: allows you to see the cargo bed to help with fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitching or to briefly check on cargo.
• Rear Side View with Trailer Length Indicator: with a compatible trailer attached and a turn signal activated, this view will show a full screen down the side of the truck along with a Trailer Length Indicator to aid in lane-change manoeuvres by visually showing obstructions with the trailer in adjacent lanes.
Premium Safety Features
The 2024 model year will offer the standard Sierra HD Pro Safety suite of safety and new driver assistance technologies, including:
• Forward Collision Alert
• Lane Departure Warning
• Automatic Emergency Braking
• Front Pedestrian Braking (new for 2024)
• IntelliBeam, Auto High Beams
• Following Distance Indicator
There is a static video review of this HD truck on my Truck King YouTube channel – if you’d rather see me talking and pointing.
Ram HD Rebel
At the Ram booth, we saw an add-on to the existing HD truck – the Rebel package. No doubt Ram did not want to show up to the party without a present so they are adding this off-road treatment to the existing HD truck. Not exactly a generational update. However, I noted, if it does have one overarching advantage it’s that the 6.7L Cummins diesel engine is available in the configuration – which it is not in the Power Wagon – also built on the 2500 chassis.
Here is what’s available in this new HD Rebel package:

High Demand
2022 Ford Maverick XLT Hybrid
Story and photos by Gerry Frechette
I
f we told you there was a compact, hybrid pick-up you could buy for under $30K, would you be surprised? We were, too, when we got into the Ford Maverick Hybrid. Not surprised that Ford could build such a vehicle, but yes, surprised that a vehicle so frugal and useful would start at such a low price.
The Maverick XL base model is lightly equipped and costs but $27,750. We tried out the XLT model with more and nicer equipment, which originally cost $28,500 before Destination and Delivery charges (which were $1,995), but, according to the Ford Canada website, now costs $30,350 plus D&D. The current new car sales landscape is ever changing, and Ford’s supply of Mavericks may be limited due to high demand. In any case, that is still a low price, even if it is above the $30K level.
The way the Maverick is being marketed, the hybrid front-wheeldrive models are the “base” ones, with the turbo EcoBoost-powered 4x4 models, including a Lariat, being the higher-end ones. From this, you can rightly conclude that the hybrid’s engine is not the hot turbo four, but is a normally-aspirated 2.5-litre unit with no pretense of high performance. In fact, it takes the electric motor to combine with the engine to put out 191 horsepower. This is enough for normal everyday usage around town, and it is quiet and refined in anything short of heavy throttle use, which is when you are reminded that the transmission is a CVT automatic that lets the engine sit at that higher rpm until the road speed catches up with it.
But of course, the essence of driving this vehicle is its electric capability. Driving it around the city with a very light foot, and then checking out the info read-out that tells you how far you got on the two different means of propulsion, most times, the all-electric

distance was more than the gasoline distance. In fact, it made us think that in a day of urban driving, you wouldn’t be far off from what a plug-in hybrid would deliver in electric-only driving. Transport Canada rates it at 5.6L/100 km city, but we saw the 4.0L range, outstanding for a heavier vehicle. Like all hybrids, highway consumption is higher, and after a longer trip with about 90 percent highway, we still saw 5.4L/100 km come up on the trip computer.
The Maverick comes only as a four-door five-passenger “crew cab” and the front passengers get plenty of room and comfort. Our XLT had the “luxury package” for $3,300, which included 6-way power driver’s seat, and that combined with a longer-than-usual bottom cushion yielded good comfort for a longer-legged driver. The back seat is a bit tighter for adults in legroom, and the near-vertical back cushion will not have any adult wanting to ride in there all day. Still, it is useful space for a small pick-up, made more so in that the bottom cushion swings up to give access to a small storage compartment underneath. More on that later.
As one might expect, the Maverick is aimed at a younger buyer, and the interior design and trim reflects that. The seats were in a good looking “technical” fabric in two-tone grey, as is the rest of the interior trim. We are not sure what is happening on the door panels with large cut-away sections in light grey. And the small screen on the dash looks like it could have been a couple of inches bigger than it is, given the size of the housing it is in. Instead, there is this weird honeycomb-style orange plastic insert beside
the screen into which I suppose you can put a pen or rolled-up piece of paper. And it can’t be removed. But I’ve seen another Maverick without one.
Being an actual pick-up, the Maverick does have a bed in the back. This is a compact vehicle with two rows of seating, so the bed is short, all of 4.5-feet long. The spec sheet for our tester did list an optional bed extender, but it wasn’t installed so we can’t
comment on its usefulness. What does look useful are all the tie down hooks back there, ten in all, including two on a sliding track on the upper side of the box. Our tester also had the optional spray-in bed liner.
So there is space in the back to toss bicycles or other sports equipment up to a maximum payload of 1,500 pounds, and the maximum towing weight is 2,000 pounds. So you could conceivably tow a light trailer with a jet ski or small motorcycles on it. This makes the Maverick a good choice for an active urban person or couple who like their outdoor recreation but don’t need a bigger truck and, of course, appreciate the efficiency of the hybrid powertrain.
What will be an issue, as it was for this writer, is enough dry and secure storage for luggage and personal items which might have great value, like camera equipment. There is certainly room on top of and underneath (to a point) the rear seat, but then you won’t be putting people back there too. What all this is trying to say is, that any time you go somewhere, you will be having to consider the security risks to your belongings, and most of the time, leaving the bed empty while everything else is crammed inside, covered in dark blankets, or visible through the tinted windows, if they are too big for the under-seat storage. This is by no means just a Maverick issue, but it is with any pick-up that comes from the factory without a lockable tonneau or metal box in the back. Of course, Ford and the aftermarket have no end of products to address these concerns, but not for that initial low price.
So, for these reasons, and like any other vehicle, one must consider the use to which it will be put the most. If you are a person with lots of recreational gear who likes the pick-up image and appreciates low price, comfort, easy handling and frugal operation, the Maverick Hybrid is a great choice, and you’ll probably just deal with interior storage situations as they arise. But the Escape Hybrid and Bronco Sport (both available with all-wheel drive unlike the Maverick Hybrid) are built on the same platform and have secure covered cargo compartments. Something to consider.
Entering its third-generation, Toyota’s flagship 2023 Toyota Sequoia brings more of everything: size, performance and surprising efficiency, too, thanks to a new standard hybrid engine.
Like the massive coniferous tree providing inspiration, make no mistake, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia is large. In fact, the full-size
utility vehicle is over 3,000 millimetres longer than the outgoing version and features the brand’s current design language shared by siblings like the Tundra upon which the model is based.
“Our primary design goal for Sequoia was to create a sophisticated, yet tough and active lifestyle SUV that looks capable of handling a diversity of big adventure needs,” says Kevin Hunter, president of the Toyota North American Calty design studio where the truck was reimagined, in a media release.
“That holds true whether it’s a night out on the town with friends, towing a boat to the lake with family, or taking a more extreme off-road adventure.”
The blocky honeycomb grille dominates most of the front fascia giving the truck a powerful presence. There’s lots of angles and bulky body panels reinforcing this assessment — and the TRD Pro trim toughens the exterior further, bundling extras like a skid plate, roof rack and light bar — though our top-of-the-line Capstone press loaner lends some balance in the form of luxury.
Check out the upgraded LED head and tail lamps, sequential turn signals, power running boards, and polished accents and huge chrome 22-inch wheels. Inside, occupants enjoy semi-aniline leather seats that are perforated and coloured in exclusive black-and-white. The use of real American Walnut open-pore wood around the cabin is fitting and the grain is beautiful, especially on

the dash when softly illuminated by the inset LED Capstone logo. The captain’s chairs in the middle row are cushy but cause quite the blind spot while shoulder checking.
First launched in the Tundra, the huge 14-inch Toyota Multimedia system appears to be floating and the built-in voice assistant is programmed to understand natural language voice commands. For example, users can say “Hey Toyota, take me home.”
Despite utilizing a rugged body-on-frame chassis, shared with the aforementioned Tundra as well as the Land Cruiser sold in other markets and the Lexus LX, driving the Sequoia is a comfortable, composed and quiet experience even on a rough logging road I bombed down during testing. This is due in part to new laser welding techniques helping both reduce weight and add strength,
and the independent front and multi-link rear suspension. Acoustic door glass also helps keep a lot of unwanted noise out.
Only one powertrain is offered: a partially-electrified 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 i-FORCE MAX, which utilizes a 36-kilowatt motor-generator installed between the ICE and ten-speed automatic transmission. The benefit of such a setup is that all of the 437-horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque can be put directly to the ground, allowing the 6,000-plus-pound Sequoia to tow up to 9,000 pounds. To really feel the performance, switching the Drive Mode Select to Sport+ makes full use of the partially-electrified mill directing its output mostly towards acceleration.
To make hauling easier, a variety of optional equipment is available. The Tow Tech Package includes a Trailer Backup Guide providing realtime assistance right on the infotainment screen, and Straight Path Assist allows the computer to take over some of the steering input to keep an attached reversing trailer on the correct line. Load-Levelling Rear Height Control Air Suspension ensures the truck and cargo stay level regardless of the type of terrain being travelled on.
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is built at the company’s Toyota Motor Manufacturing facility in San Antonio, Texas and is in showrooms now.

Electric Adventure
Electric adventure vehicle manufacturer Rivian has officially expanded into Canada, marking the milestone by holding a meet and greet event with buyers at East Van’s Rocky Mountaineer Station in late November. And though it’s the first time these zeroemissions vehicles are making their way here, the brand actually already has a presence in the city that also happens to provide the perfect environment to enjoy them.
“We’re stoked to be in Vancouver and Yaletown. Especially because we have an office here — this is actually one of our software hubs. So all told, we have over 150 people working in the area including service and customer support. We do mobile app development here, we do Alexa integration here, and a ton of the essential software functions of the vehicle,” says Peeble Squires, corporate communications manager, during a tour of the open house.
Over 10 examples of the R1T truck and R1S crossover, in several refreshing bright colours like Red Canyon and Compass Yellow, were parked in and outside the large indoor conference space for people to check out and poke around in while they await delivery of orders taking place through the end of the year and into 2023. Outside, representatives offered guests short ride-alongs around the neighbourhood to get a feel for the drive.
One feature of the R1T especially popular with the kids was its Gear Tunnel, a completely weatherproof lockable rubber-lined storage compartment behind the rear doors running right through the width of the pickup. Children (and adults) crawled in one end and out the other, though the real purpose is to store recreational equipment, strollers or other oddly-shaped accessories. Inside are two 110-volt outlets to juice up electronics or camping cookware.
Story and photos by Benjamin YongAnother was the latter’s optional Skyrise HD Medium Rooftop Tent co-designed by roof-rack specialist Yakima. Fitting neatly atop the crossbars, a ladder helps occupants reach the cozy three-person shelter that has two built-in skylights for stargazing and a comfy 2.5-inch thick wall-to-wall foam mattress.
Some quick facts: the all-wheel R1T starts at MSRP $90,000 CAD and utilizes one electric motor at each wheel. The four together generate a whopping 835 horsepower unlocking a 0-to-100 km/h time of approximately three seconds. The similarly-equipped but slightly pricier $94,400 R1S can be configured to seat five or up to seven passengers. Towing is rated at 11,000 pounds and 7,700 pounds, respectively. Estimated range is around 500 kilometres, depending on configuration, and will increase as larger battery options arrive later.
Both are identical from the B-pillar forward and built on the socalled skateboard platform, which packages the battery pack, drive
units, suspension, braking and thermal system below the height of the wheels maximizing cabin and cargo space.
Originally founded in 2009, Rivian is starting in B.C. with future plans to push across the rest of the country. In addition to setting up offices in Vancouver, the fledgling automaker is building out a series of service centres around the province where consumers can take delivery of purchases as well as receive service. How is diesel fuel priced?
Recently, Ram announced that it is dropping its 3.0L Ecodiesel from the lineup. This follows Ford quietly dropping its 3.0L small diesel last year. So, GM is the last man standing with its inline-6cylinder diesel available in half-tons and some SUVs. The question has to be asked – why drop them? They sold well, so that’s not it. There were mechanical (and programming) issues with both Ford and Ram – that didn’t help the business case. But, the push over the edge, I think, seems to be the government’s strong-arm tactics in pushing electric power as its darling.
Good news and subsidies abound for EVs – not for small diesel. For years now, diesel is continually being choked with new emissions standards and the future looks bleak for producers as looming federal regulations will cost oil refineries billions of dollars in forced upgrades. This brings up the other inequity in the diesel equation - the cost of the fuel. On paper, diesel fuel is cheaper to produce than gasoline – yet it costs more. All these costs must and will be passed on to the consumer. But why is the fuel more expensive? In two words – taxes and supply.
Let’s look at fuel taxes in Canada.
Gasoline average taxes in Canada as a comparison
Feds charge 10 cents/L. Provinces add 10.81 cents/L. The Fed & Prov Carbon Tax adds another 10.25 cents/L. Then slap on an average of 9.2% HST/GST. You now have a minimum tax of 36.78 cents on a litre of gasoline.
Diesel averages in Canada
Feds charge 4 cents/L. Provinces add 11.34 cents/L. The Fed & Prov Carbon Tax – 12.33 cents/L. Total of 27.67 cents/L. Now add the average 9.2% HST/GST. That brings in a minimum tax of 31.82 cents on a litre of diesel.
So, tax on diesel in Canada is lower than gasoline – so why the higher price? Here is where it gets interesting. There are only three refineries in Canada that produce diesel fuel. Transport costs are higher to regional markets. That’s one reason. The other is that these refineries are the same ones that supply us with winter home
heating fuel (its the same stuff as diesel). This demand, affected by weather, also pushes up prices through the summer/winter cycle. The result? Diesel costs more and there is no advantage – manufacturers know this.
However, as we know north of the 49th – what happens in the United States often dictates what happens here economically. As in, diesel production and offerings from the manufacturers. Frankly, if it’s not working for them in the States, we will lose out. They don’t keep anything in production for the Canadian market only.
Looking at taxes on diesel fuel in the States, you’ll see they are much higher and for a different reason. Heavy truck transport takes a toll
Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of Tom Fisk and the manufacturerson highways, and given that OTR transport is almost 100-percent diesel powered, the Feds and the individual states try to recoup road maintenance expenses through taxes on diesel fuel. Sadly, if you drive a diesel VW Golf, you pay the same taxes as an 18-wheeler. That is another blow to small diesel ownership in the United States. Have a look at the tax costs on fuel down south.
Average fuel taxes in the United States
Fed charge 18.4 cents on a gallon of gasoline. Fed charge 24.40 cents on a gallon of diesel fuel. The individual States add an average of 31.67 cents on a gallon of gasoline. On diesel, though, the States add 33.45 cents on a gallon.
This tax picture is very clear – but there is more. There are 130 refineries in the United States. Most refineries generally produce 50 percent unleaded gasoline, 30 percent diesel, 10 percent jet fuel and 10 percent other fuels, including propane and general aviation gasoline. However, as a result of Covid, at least 13 U.S. refineries shut down, significantly cutting production. An industry source (TMC) points out that the loss of the 13 refineries accounts for more than 1.4 million barrels of oil per day, or more than 7 percent of the country’s entire capacity of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. The report said this is not just in the U.S., as worldwide refining production has declined by an additional 2.13 million barrels per day. A lack of supply pushes up prices – another nail in the coffin of small diesel.
However, this upward price trend has been going on for a long time now. A U.S. study of on-highway diesel fuel prices shows they have been higher than regular-grade gasoline prices, on a dollar-per-gallon basis, almost continuously since September 2004. This trend is a break from the previous historical pattern of diesel fuel prices usually being lower than gasoline prices except in cold winters when demand for heating oil pushed diesel fuel prices higher.
Also complicating the supply chain for diesel fuel in North America is the export of more than 1 million gallons of diesel per day to Latin
American nations and Europe to help that continent as it abruptly separates from buying energy from Russia because of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. The gasoline/diesel picture in the rest of world though is quite different. By contrast, in many other countries, diesel fuel is still much cheaper than gasoline. In part, this is because significantly more diesel-powered passenger vehicles are on European and Asian roadways. In addition, Europe has always reversed the gas/diesel fuel taxation model. European countries have traditionally kept the cost of diesel down – so as to aid the transport industry and business in general. They prefer the gasoline consumers to bear the brunt of the tax burden. The average tax on gasoline is €0.55 per litre ($2.47 per gallon) in Europe, and €0.44 per litre ($1.98 per gallon) on diesel.
If more drivers in the United States and Canada were willing or able to switch to diesel-powered vehicles, the price per gallon/litre of diesel fuel might begin to fall below that of gasoline. However, with the current supply issues at refineries and the tax structure (particularly in the States) it is doubtful that we’ll see a recovery of the small diesel engine market. And, that has (in part) led to the cancellation of small diesel offerings by Detroit. Sad.
Power and Capability
by Dan HeymanThe Ford Expedition reigns as one of the most popular three-row full-size SUVs available on the market today, thanks to its varied powertrain and trim choices. For 2022, that variation expands even further to include the off-road specific Timberline model, a very dark, very green and somewhat stealthy take on the F-150 pickup-based SUV. Timberline trim adds blacked-out wheels wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler off-road rubber and matching grille, wing mirrors and foglight surrounds as well as side steps. There’s also an underbody bash plate and an orange trim piece just above that to catch the eye just a little bit. The new design also provides improved approach angles. In an effort to ensure all Timberlines get the best off-road performance possible, the trim is not available on the larger MAX model because its rear overhang is too long.
2022 Ford Expedition Timberline
‘Round back, we find another underbody plate as well as more of that orange colouration around the “Expedition” script stretching across the entire tailgate. Add a few Timberline badges – also mainly orange – and that’s about the extent of the exterior giveaways, resulting in a stylistic transformation that you notice, but only subtly so.
Can’t really say the same for the interior, however, manly because it’s finished in green – green! – leather with contrast orange piping (the design team must have been comprised of big University of Miami Hurricanes fans) and the 15.5-inch infotainment is gobsmackingly huge and really can’t be missed.
I will say, though, that past the size of its display, the latest version of Ford’s SYNC infotainment is a goody. The buttons are all big and easy to read, the menus are easy to navigate and even if you’re
Story and photosusing wireless Apple CarPlay (there’s also a wireless charge pad at the base of the centre stack), the bottom third of the display remains home to your climate controls and a few other hot keys so you’re never more than a button press away. It’s smooth, it looks good and it’s fast, and all that is important as we get to this level. The backup camera is also great; there are actually two separate camera displays when you activate reverse and each one can be played with to show different views of what’s going on around you. They’ve put that big display to good use, that’s for sure.
Otherwise, the Timberline’s interior is full of the stuff you’d expect from a vehicle with a name like that; real leather covers many interior surfaces including the seats, door inserts and parts of the dash and is well-matched with contrast colour stitching, and if that central display isn’t enough, there’s also a digital gauge cluster that’s host to all sorts of information ranging from your trip computer, to your tow settings (you can also load different tow profiles if you’re towing more than one trailer size, and that will modify your trailer blind-spot system, among other things), to surface information such as angle of attack and so on.
That’s the tech side; there’s a ton of space in here in both the first and second rows that should easily accommodate most adults, though we all know the second row in vehicles like this tend to be reserved more for the kids anyway. That, or they’ll make their way to the third row that can be accessed two ways in my tester – either make your way between the two captain’s chairs, or if you’re small enough, you can squeeze between the door frame and seatback as the second row both tilts and slides. That means you could have a forward-facing child’s seat installed in the second row, and still have access to the third. Which, by the way, has seating for three as well as cupholders and storage bins and USB ports on either side, and the seats are power-folding. In short, it looks like a third row that’s meant to be used regularly.
There is a longer MAX version of the Expedition and while it does add 302 mm to the overall length, that doesn’t translate to more space in the second and third rows, just more cargo space where its 972L of space behind the third row bests my tester’s 546L. Fold all the seats, and you’re treated to almost 3,000L of space in the standard truck and 1,800L with the third row folded.
Back to the second row: there’s no central storage bin, but second row occupants get both a USB-A and USB-C port, a 120V outlet, their own climate controls and
the ability to control the audio volume, not to mention a pair of seats that come both heated and cooled.
The front sets, meanwhile, are adjustable ten ways and come heated and cooled.
All this before we even delve into the powertrain.
The 3.5-litre EcoBoost is one of the most popular engines at Ford, in that it also powers the F-150 pickup and they sell millions of those, most of them with the 3.5. The Timberline gets the most powerful engine you can get in an Expedition, good for 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of twin-turbocharged torque. All that power is sent to the four wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission with manual mode, though the way you switch gears – by pressing a “+” or “-“ button mounted below the drive select wheel – is awkward and just kind of…weird. It’s almost as if the feature was provided because Ford felt it had to do it, although you’d think a pair of paddle shifters would make more sense.
I do like the drive select wheel, though. It helps reduce clutter in the cabin, makes it so you can pass a bag to the passenger (or the passenger seat) without snagging a strap on something and it’s more intuitive than the button-press system other vehicles use, including the Navigator. It’s not traditional by any means, but it somehow seems more so than a button-press system.
With drive engaged, the Expedition pulls off smoothly, emitting a slight growl from the single (although fairly large) tailpipe. It’s no lightweight, of course, but the 3.5 does a pretty good job of disguising all that (and helps it tow up to 4,173 kilograms if you select the heavy duty tow package found on my tester), and the Expedition never really feels stressed even in tough situations like climbing a mountain road at highway speed.
The chassis does its best to equal the smooth performance of the engine, but this being a body-on-frame truck, there’s only so much one can do to meter out all the vibrations that come with that kind of architecture.
That’s all the on-road stuff, but this is a proper four-wheeler with a ton of off-road chops. You can see it as you move through the drive modes, which count no fewer than
seven: Normal, Sport (which seems a bit of a lark), Tow/Haul (which doesn’t), Eco, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Sand and Mud/Rut. The tow package also offers a 3.73 limited-slip rear axle and two-speed transfer case, so you know that nigh-on six-figure price tag or not, this is a vehicle that can handle itself off the beaten track, no problem. In the limited time I spent on forestry roads in Gravel mode during my test, meanwhile, it proved so capable and confident that it didn’t take me long to realize that it was pretty much laughing at me and that it can take a whole heck of a lot more abuse than this.
While the only way to get an Expedition with Ford’s Blue Cruise semi-autonomous tech is opting for the Platinum model, you do get some bonus automation in the form of the Trail Turn Assist that helps navigate tighter passages while off-roading, most notably helping you round tighter bends by braking the inside rear wheel. It also gets a taller ride height thanks to Ford employing longer-travel suspension.
It may not be quite as supple as the Platinum version or its Lincoln Navigator cousin, of course, and not quite as blingy, but the more I drove it, the more I came to appreciate the added style, power and capability. This is the Expedition for those who like to let their hair down a little, and I like that.
Four-Season Unit
Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of Crossroads RVEvery year, in mid-September, the largest consumer RV show takes place in Hershey, PA. I attended this year and produced 22 new RV walk-throughs for my new TK Powersports and RVs YouTube channel. Many of these are already live on the site.
One of the units that really impressed was a new floor plan from Redwood. I thought it was worth highlighting. This large fifth-wheel is a four-season, full-timing unit and has to be described as simply luxurious. The company says that Redwood, as a brand, was created in 2010 for the sole purpose of providing the exploding Baby Boomer market with a luxury Fifth Wheel at an affordable price.
Of course, what they don’t say is retiring Baby Boomers; and in truth I’m one of them. I suppose that’s why this unit really caught
my attention – let’s face it, if at this age, we can’t be self-indulgent, well, what are we waiting for?
Redwood describes its build philosophy this way. “Our elegant interiors that set us apart from other manufacturers and the quality of what we use to achieve the look on the inside is just as important as what we use on the outside and underneath where you might not notice at first glance. We insist on the meticulous installation of all the components and sub-structures to create a solid foundation of reliability and durability. This combined with the beautiful interior fabrics, custom cabinetry and cutting-edge technology, makes for an incomparably finished luxury fifth-wheel unrivalled in the industry”.
That description of the build quality aside, space in a Redwood is a priority. They achieve this by building long, tall and low. The new 4200 FL I looked at is 44-feet long and has a height of 13-feet 6inches (same as a standard transport trailer). In addition, a forward drop frame chassis adds to the basement storage.
The FL in the designation stands for Forward Living Room. This is a layout feature that only truly works if you have the space and the height. In this Redwood, you have both. Another strong buying feature in the Redwood is the online build tool they have. Recognizing that at this price-point, individualization is important, Redwood gives you many, many options that you can add – or delete, as your personal taste dictates.
It’s worth running down the list of just some of the stan-
Off-Road Pickups
Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of the manufacturersSocial trends are always very evident in the world of fashion; this statement holds true for the automotive world too. Consider that over the past decade, every truck/SUV manufacturer has been pumping out more and more aggressive off-road designs. Some are just paint and plastic nods to the 4x4 craze while others are bonafide desert runners. So, this is the current hot trend; but do we need all these wilderness crushing trucks? Perhaps not, but as with fashion, this trend is selling and will have to run its course. Below I’ve compiled a current list of what’s available in off-roaders (trucks only). If you’re in the market, you have choices.
CHEVROLET Silverado
For 2022, Chevy is adding the ZR2 off-road treatment to its Silverado. It sports front and rear e-lockers, a special fascia and the Multimatic DSSV damped shocks (already found on the mid-size Colorado ZR2). ZR2 highlights include the following: Standard 6.2L V8 mated with a
10-speed automatic transmission; uniquely-tuned springs for maximum front and rear suspension travel; Terrain Mode, which allows one-pedal rock crawling; 33-inch off-road MT tires; skid plate package and 31.8degree approach angle.
A unique bumper has removable end caps and the dual exhaust has been lifted and ends before the rear bumper. The Silverado ZR2 is distinguished by a new black hood insert, a unique grille with integrated lighting and a “flow-tie” emblem.
CHEVROLET Colorado ZR2
Chevrolet just released a teaser of the 2023 Colorado ZR2 Bison truck, an off-road ready truck built with unique American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) features. While the short video doesn’t show the whole truck, it previews elements of the underbody skid plates, badging and more. Full vehicle specs will be shared later this fall.
GMC Sierra AT4X
The GMC line has introduced the AT4X – the GMC version of the Chevy
ZR2. Much of the underpinnings are the same – however, the designs are unique to GMC. AT4X is spread throughout the GMC lineup.
GMC Canyon AT4X
For 2023, we get a new Canyon and along with that an AT4X version. This is to be a no-compromises, off-road midsize truck. Canyon AT4X boasts a factory lifted, ultra-wide track; standard 33-inch MT tires, Multimatic DSSV dampers, front and rear lockers, underbody skid plates and the AT4X-exclusive Baja drive mode. The Canyon AT4X’s factory-lift enables 10.7 inches of ground clearance standard and a 36.9-degree approach angle.
RAM TRX
The Ram 1500 TRX is a very special desert racer. Its focus is to topple the Ford Raptor from its current position as the apex predator of trucks. It’s powered by a 702 hp supercharged 6.2L Hemi V8 engine – that will deliver a top speed of 190 km/h. Even though the TRX is designated as a 1500-series truck, it has more in common (frame-wise) with the 2500
exhaust has a throatier engine sound. The Raptor R (a V8-powered Raptor) is coming later this year.
FORD F-150 Tremor
The long-standing 4WD package – the FX4 – has been joined by a new package – the Tremor. This version has been added to the F-150 and midsize Ranger and will now also be an option on the compact Maverick.
FORD Ranger Tremor
The Tremor Off-Road Package on the Ranger creates an off-road-ready factory-built truck. Ranger Tremor features a lifted suspension with off-road tuned FOX 2.0 monotube dampers and rear piggyback reservoirs, specially tuned front coilover and rear leaf springs, 32-inch Continental General Grabber all-terrain tires and six-switch auxiliary power pack to manage accessories including winches, light bars and air compressors
FORD Maverick Tremor
The new Maverick Tremor is available on XLT and Lariat series trucks and includes a 1-inch lift for greater ground clearance, exclusive Trail Control, unique off-road-tailored front and rear suspension, advanced all-wheel drive with four-wheel-drive lock and 2.0L EcoBoost engine. Distinctive
model. For instance, the control arms and suspension links are wider and stronger, and the steering has been strengthened. The rear spring is huge at 23.6-inches-high. Ram uses Bilstein E2 remote-reservoir active dampers. Ram also employs its Active Terrain Dynamics control software with three accelerometers and four wheel-position sensors to know exactly where the shocks are, and three-stage jounce bumpers. It’s worth noting that the TRX is still a work-a-day truck. It has a payload capacity of 1,310 lb and a towing capacity of 8,100 lb.
FORD F-150 Raptor
Ford, no doubt, created this off-road craze with its 2009 introduction of the desert racing-inspired F-150 Raptor.
Today, the third-generation F-150 Raptor takes the mechanical and technical aspects of the Raptor and adds enhanced connected technology. Its High-Output 3.5L EcoBoost engine now delivers better low-end torque, enables greater maximum towing and increased maximum payload capability. Its projected fuel range is 800 km. Plus, its active valve dual
NISSAN Frontier PRO-4X
Frontier is new this year and it’s offering a unique Canadian-only model, the Frontier King Cab PRO-4X with 6-foot bed. It features shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive system with 2WD/4HI/4LO modes. Frontier also has a four-wheel limited-slip system. The PRO-4X model adds an electronic locking differential, Bilstein off-road shock absorbers and underbody skid plates. Cargo bed utility includes available factory-applied spray-on bedliner and the Utili-track Channel System with its three “C” cross-section rails mounted in the bed. In addition, four fixed bed tie-down hooks help secure gear.
Tremor design cues include blacked-out Ford logos, headlamps and tail lamps, signature Tremor Orange tow hooks, updated fender vent and new grille; available Tremor Appearance Package offers an even bolder look.TOYOTA Tundra TRD Pro
For 2022, Tundra itself is new. Looking at these bullet points, you’ll see that this Tundra is now as up-to-date as any of its competition.
• New 3.5L V6 twin-turbo engine makes 389 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque.
• i-Force MAX powertrain option punches that up to 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque.
• Max tow rating is increased to 12,000 lb.
• Available 14-inch touchscreen highlights the new Audio Multimedia system.
• 12.3-inch instrument panel display is available.
• Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 active safety is standard on all trim levels.
• Interiors are completely updated with new materials and designs.
The TRD Pro version is fitted with 2.5-inch FOX internal bypass shocks. It also gains a stabilizer bar, red painted suspension parts, TRD aluminum front skid plate, underbody protection and all-terrain Falken tires.
TOYOTA Tacoma TRD Pro
Tacoma will have a generational update next year. However, it continues to offer its 4x4 versions now. It features the five-person double cab and a five-foot cargo bed standard. TRD Remote Reservoir Suspension Kit, TRD-tuned front coil springs with Fox Racing Shocks (adds a one-inch
lift and progressive-rate rear leaf springs), a TRD Pro quarter-inch thick aluminum skid plate, and Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Kevlar-reinforced tires and TRD-tuned stainless steel exhaust. Rigid Industries has added LED fog lights, colour-keyed mirrors, door handles, rear bumper, black bezel headlamps and tail lamps.
JEEP Gladiator
Jeep Gladiator by its very nature is an off-road ready truck. Frankly, it exists because of this off-road trend. Gladiator’s body-on-frame design offers four doors on a stretched frame 31 inches longer than the Wrangler. The wheelbase is also 19.4 inches longer and the rear axle and suspension set-up borrows heavily from the Ram 1500. The Gladiator has 11.1-inches of ground clearance complemented with an under mounted spare tire that is tucked up above the rear axle.
Gladiator is available with the same trim packages as the Wrangler (Sport S, Overland and Rubicon) and it is progressively more aggressive in the off-road arena as you move up to the Rubicon. Gladiator/Rubicon trucks come with a Rock-Trac 4x4 system with a “4LO” ratio of 4:1; Dana 44 axles; Tru-Lock electric front- and rear-axle lockers, Trac-Lok limited-slip differential and sway-bar disconnect. The truck has standard front and rear tow hooks, skid plates and steel bumpers that are winch-ready from the factory. The Rubicon version comes with 33-inch off-road tires giving it up to 30-inches of water fording ability.
Iconic British Rig
and photos by Gerry FrechetteThe Range Rover has been around for over five decades, and the model pioneered the luxury SUV genre about four decades ago. In all that time, this iconic British rig has stayed true to the formula, and today, is in the position to command a very high price in the market.
You would be hard-pressed to find a more quiet, relaxed, and refined high-end SUV, one that is the equal of all the other high-end SUVs on the road, but which also has the best off-road capabilities in this prestige class.
Since the interior of a vehicle defines its level of luxury to most people, we’ll start there. The short description is, it’s quite beautiful, with toplevel materials like fine leather (Perlino perforated Semi-Aniline) seats, dashboard and doors, real wood (Ecru Walnut) and aluminum trim, and appealing design. The heated and cooled front seats are adjustable some 24 ways, offer your choice of massage, and are wide enough to assure comfort for everyone.
The obligatory touch screen is large (13-inches) and easy to use, which is a good thing, because most of the driver-variable functions are controlled thereon. It’s not all that intuitive at first, but with a little practice, it started making some sense, as much as it could with just so many features that can be controlled. The feature we used and liked the most was the 1,600-watt Meridian audio system with some 35 speakers.
The rear seat is usually not where your passengers will want to be in most vehicles, but in this case, Range Rover has challenged convention. They call those seats Executive Class Comfort Plus, and they do look like business-class seats on a long-range airliner. The seats themselves are pretty much duplicates of the front ones – multi-adjustable including recline, temperature-control, and even massaging. But it is all the other amenities, fully controllable from the touch screen in the electricallylowered console, that makes this a limo SUV.
Power cupholder extender, climate control including air quality (purifier and ionizer), ambient and task lighting variable for intensity and colour, roof and side-window blinds open or close, control of the two 11.4-inch screens on the back of the front seats....it’s the lap of luxury back there. It must be said, though, that it isn’t especially roomy, as the seats are all so physically big, there is less space than you might like. The same goes for the cargo area, which can be extended at the push of a but-

First Edition
ton, lowering the rear seats. There is a long-wheelbase RR with a third row, so that might be the model to consider if space is important. Of interest is that the rear opening consists of a “clamshell” arrangement with a hatch opening up, and a smaller section swinging down like a pick-up’s. Range Rover is marketing that design to those who like to go to outdoor events and “tailgate” or party with their vehicle. A leather cushion is supplied for comfort sitting on the tailgate, and there are cupholders built in.
So what is the Range Rover P530 like to drive? Well, unlike the sixcylinder P400 models which have a couple of hybrid systems from which to choose, the P530 is all gasoline combustion engine, all the time, except when the “stop-start” system shuts it down at stop lights.
It’s a 4.4-litre, DOHC V8 with twin turbos, sourced from BMW, and it replaces the venerable supercharged 5.0-litre unit that has powered Range Rovers for many years previous. It has 523 horsepower, and torque is 553 lb-ft as low as 1,800 rpm, so it moves this 2,588-kg beast with no waiting; zero-to-100 km/h is achieved in 4.6 seconds. It is rated for 3,500 kg of towing.
Other than the sheer speed, what impressed us the most was the serene quiet of it all at anything short of full throttle, thanks to the turbos which mute the engine, along with acoustic glass and active noise cancellation. And that reminded us the most of a two-motor electric vehicle. Kind of ironic....this old-tech gas-only big-power luxury vehicle drives
Storyjust like an EV. Except for the 18L/100 km consumption in light-footed urban driving.
The rest of the driveline consists of an eight-speed automatic (more gears aren’t needed with this kind of low-end torque) putting the power to the full-time all-wheel drive. There are three driving modes from which to choose – Eco, Comfort and Dynamic. Being a Land Rover product, it must also maximize its off-road capability, and to that end, there is the Terrain Response system, which can be set to Auto, or manually selected to Grass-Gravel-Snow, Mud-Ruts, Sand, Rock Crawl, and Wade. Those options become more unlikely to be chosen as you progress up the list, one has to think, as those driving this top-of-the-line Range Rover are heading to the ski cabin more than they are climbing rocky mountain trails that require traversing rivers. That is especially the case with the excellent-on-the-road Pirelli Scorpion 285/40-23 all-season tires it is equipped with. With proper off-road tires, the air suspension set to “fully raised,”(295 mm ride height) and the centre and rear differentials locked (as they can be), one might be willing to take it a bit further off-road.
Perhaps the biggest surprise in driving the P530 is how nimble it feels for such a big vehicle. The air suspension has much to do with that, as does the rear-wheel steering, which serves to reduce the radius of corners and make it feel smaller. On the other hand, the front-wheel steering is a bit devoid of feedback.
Appearance wise, the new Range Rover looks much like the previous generation, and still not like anything else. The vertical trim on the front doors has been toned down, at least on this First Edition. With the dark grey paint and lots of (optional) black trim and roof, it certainly has road presence, although the black wheels (a trend I wish would disappear) take away most of the visual elegance and panache that polished alloy wheels would impart.
The lesser P530 models start at $143,900, but this fully loaded First Edition will cost you at least $182,000. So, all in, you won’t get much change from a quarter mill. Like they say, if you have to ask the price.... It’s a good value, though, as it’ll do off-road things the more expensive Bentley or Lamborghini can’t.
Overlander
Recently, we attended the Canadian launch of the Ford Bronco Raptor – not far from being one of the most mental vehicles found on the market today. While its fat-fendered figure is currently stealing most of the headlines, the Everglades model is also joining the party. Admittedly, it has a bit of a hill to climb to separate itself from the Bronco’s significant shadow in the fast-growing world of special Broncos.
Luckily, it has more than a few tools to help it climb that hill, literally. After all, that’s what the Everglades model is all about, really; it’s like a Bronco that’s been fit for overlanding right from the factory. It’s meant to soldier on through mushy fields or over rocky passes and has been given neat bits like a reversible snorkel, big mud-flinging 35-inch Goodyear Territory rubber wrapped in 17-inch off-road specific wheels that look ready to conquer the tundra, and the arguable pièce de resistance, a standard 10,000-pound remote-activated Warn winch. Those accessories, of course, aren’t the end of it; there’s a bank of auxiliary switches above the rear-view mirror so all the good stuff available for other Broncos can also be had here. Spotlights, foglights, mounts for traction pads and so forth is all possible. It’s available only as a four-door – makes sense, considering the application – and only with a hard top.
In addition to the tires and winch, it’s hard not to notice that other exterior detail: the big “Everglades” logo on the front fender. If you’ll look closely, you’ll notice a bunch of hash marks on there. More than just looking cool, they’re functional – the mark sitting second from the top is especially important as it sits 36-inches above the ground below, and is literally a high-water mark that shows just how deep you can wade. Let the water go above that, and you could be in trouble. There’s also a new Everglades-exclusive Desert Sand exterior colour.
Either way, this is an incredibly cool-looking truck that wears its new bits well and gets a whole whack of added presence as a result. It’s no

Bronco Raptor, but Ford has managed to separate the Everglades version from other Broncos which is no small feat, considering no Bronco of any stripe is ever going to be called a shrinking violet.
Inside, the uniqueness continues. There are special washable vinyl seats, sprayable floorboards with drainage plugs and even the roof panels come finished with exposed, washable plastic. You can add a sound-deadening roof liner if you’d prefer; you just have to decide if you want to be cleaner or more comfortable, I suppose.
Otherwise, it’s standard Bronco in here – the gauge cluster with large TFT central display, the surprisingly small steering wheel and bank of switches across the top of the dash for your front and rear lockers and Trail Turn Assist feature – more on which in a minute.
What thing you won’t see there that some other Broncos get is a button for the sway-bar disconnect. In other Broncos, this is a specialized off-road feature to relax the chassis and let it better clamber off bumps, both large and small. It’s a great feature and to not have it here is somewhat disappointing, as I could see it coming in handy even in overlanding applications.
The 12-inch infotainment display is also standard, which is great as Ford’s SYNC infotainment system continues to be one of the leaders in that department. Its buttons are big, it’s responsive to touch commands and it offers wireless CarPlay and Android Auto and makes it easy to switch from between those apps and Ford’s native interface. It of course also offers a back-up camera and a forward-and-down facing camera that automatically activates in certain drive modes (of which there are seven: Normal, Eco, Sport, Slippery, Rock Crawl, Mud-ruts, Sand) to give you an idea on what’s going on below your tires.
Being a four-door model only, room inside is ample both front and back and while the rear seats don’t fold completely flat, doing so will provide 2,350 L of cargo space, good for all the coolers, stoves and sleeping bags you need. Oh, and right there, crowning the dash is a mounting place for GoPros and the like, so you can record your next overlanding adventure. Better still is the tray that slides out from the cargo floor; an
Ikea-like icon on the leading edge of the cargo floor suggests it to be used as a seat. Personally, I’m thinking a barbeque.
We see standardization again when it comes to the powertrain, as a single engine is offered: a 2.3-litre turbo four-cylinder good for 275 horsepower and 315 pound-feet of torque, fed to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. It may not be the power star in the line-up, but for longer drives while power is important, fuel economy is perhaps even more so, especially when the next gas station may be a few hundred miles away.
Power comes on ably enough, but it does come accompanied by a somewhat strained report as it does have to work hard to haul around the extra weight from the special tires, snorkel and so forth – maybe that extra sound deadening provided by the optional roof panels isn’t such a bad idea. It will get you going quickly enough, though, and the transmission is game to help provide the power required for passing at highway speeds and so on.
When it comes to crawling along at lower speeds, meanwhile, it is right there where you want it.
We had the opportunity to put it through its paces on the mulch and loose surfaces on which it is meant to excel -- its purpose, if you will – and it proved a hardscrabble competitor here. Rocks and branches were no match for those big tires; you could here them ping-ping-pinging off the underbody as they were chewed up and spat out like so many sunflower seeds at a baseball game.
As the trails got narrower and the turns sharper, it was time to put that Trail Turn Assist (TTA) tech to the test. Essentially, what TTA does when activated is apply the brakes to the inside wheel on turns, helping you pivot ‘round as if on cat tracks. It’s a somewhat eerie feeling to see that big, square hood slung out ahead of you almost crab in the direction you’re steering. TTA reduces the turning radius, which of course is important, considering the Everglades is available only as the long-wheelbase model.
I do miss that sway-bar disconnect, though. Having experienced the feature in a number of Broncos prior to this, I know it would make for a real boost on rougher terrain. It adds both comfort and confidence, and when you’ve got a cliff on one side of the forestry road and hidden stumps on the other, you’ll want all the help you can get.
Get past that, though, and the transition to Everglades spec adds a neat layer to the experience, one that some may argue is the more practical transformation to the likes of the Raptor. It’s more practical in town than that truck, it’s got the better fuel economy and when it comes time to put it to the test in its element, it can hack that, too. It’s a cool truck that doesn’t try so hard to be a bit different, a bit more fun.
2023 is just around the corner, and with it, more EV releases are expected than ever. No manufacturer wants to be left behind during the electrification craze that the world is wrapped up in right now, so every single major car brand on earth is quickly adding models to every segment. Let’s look at some recently released and upcoming 4x4 electric vehicles that you might be interested in ordering next year.
RIVIAN
Long awaited and delayed several times, Rivian is finally shipping vehicles to Canada. The autumn saw demo events in major cities across Canada, where journalists and prospective buyers alike were afforded a chance to sit behind the wheel of either the pickup R1T or full-size R1S model. Initial feedback has been positive, and even before launch we saw more than a few off-road and camping accessories appear for

the platform – and the ridiculous “tank mode,” made possible thanks to independently-acting electric motors.
Off-Road Plus readers may find the new “camp mode” air-levelling feature interesting. Simply press a button and your Rivian will level itself on the kind of uneven ground found at just about any campground, allowing you to get a perfect night’s sleep in your roof-top-tent. While air suspension is nothing new, this type of clever feature is something that tech-forward companies like Rivian look for to stand out from the crowd. Take note, Land Rover!
F-150 LIGHTNING
Canada’s favourite pickup truck made its full-electric debut in showrooms earlier this year, with early adopters taking delivery throughout the late summer season. With subtle design differences from a normal F-150, Ford’s EV pickup is cleverly disguised among work trucks and fleet vehicles alike. Try to get one, though, and you might be waiting a while – backorders are measured in months if not years, due to supply chain difficulties and demand.
While its range of over 500 km is tempting, the price tag may not be – at over $80,000 before any EV credits or taxes, the price could keep die-hard F-150 owners away. That said, a rumoured 80-percent of all Lightning buyers are coming to the brand without having ever owned a Ford, so it’s possible that the folks behind the Blue Oval are banking on a more discerning customer taking the plunge. That said, there have been some growing pains, as Ford fights against shortages and manufacturing process development. We’d skip the early adoption until they are plentiful enough to be sitting on the lot waiting for eager buyers.
RANGE ROVER EV
Land Rover’s flagship vehicle (and the granddaddy of all luxury SUVs) just entered its fifth generation, and was engineered to accept a fullyelectric drivetrain - expected in 2023 or 2024. There’s no doubt that an EV Range Rover will tackle galas just as handily as it will gravel – but
gamble to attract a mainstream audience to the 4x4 lifestyle, without the noisy ride or 1980s handling.
It’s likely that the Recon will earn a “Trail Rated” badge, the designation given only to vehicles that meet Jeep’s own requirements for articulation, water fording, traction and manoeuvrability. Most importantly, Jeep execs have boldly promised that it will be able to complete a one-way trip on the infamous Rubicon trail, with enough charge left over to get back to town at the other end.
Illuminated grilles are (for some inexplicable reason) the hallmark of every new EV model these days, so it’s no surprise that the Recon will wear a glowing version of Jeep’s iconic seven-slot grille. Could the Recon creep in as Jeep’s new Wrangler platform? Only time will tell, but as we’ve said before, it’s only inevitable that the iconic off-roader will go the way of the Bronco and Defender some day – and it’s likely to be fully electric too.
With further economic and supply troubles on the horizon, automakers are tightening their belts right at the same time they’re making a big push for battery-powered electric vehicles. One manufacturer is bucking that trend, though. Ineos has signalled that its Grenadier will eventually be seen with a hydrogen fuel cell powerplant. Fuel cells are a proven technology, but the production and distribution of hydrogen has proven difficult.
don’t expect them to be easily obtainable. With backorders of all models approaching 200,000, Land Rover could be in a bit of trouble when it comes to supplying their first fully electric 4x4.
Given the brand’s relentless innovation in new and somewhat unconventional 4WD technologies, this might be the vehicle to watch for the future of electric 4x4s. New systems usually make their debut in a Range Rover, and eventually trickle down to more accessible models over time. With the price of a basic Range Rover tipping the scales at over $125,000, we’d certainly love to see a more accessible electric Land Rover in the near future – Defender 90 EV, anyone?
JEEP RECON
Due to the rampant success of the Wrangler 4xe, Jeep has confidently expanded its EV plans. Recon, due as a 2024 model, will be the brand’s first fully electric 4x4 in North America and is rumoured to be priced only about 10-percent higher than equivalent Wrangler models. With a unibody construction that retains many Wrangler features – like removable doors and a partially removable top – the Recon could be Jeep’s
Fortunately, several countries - including Canada - have already stated their intent to produce the fuel on an industrial scale, and stations have recently appeared across regions like Metro Vancouver. With the possibility of five-minute fuel ups, hydrogen may be the clean electric vehicle solution going forward. All these vehicles could eventually rely on it instead of today’s seemingly stagnant lithium battery technology. Without a low-impact source of power, though, none of these vehicles will truly validate their claim of being good for the environment – and if the sticker prices continue to trend upward, they could end up being accessible only to the wealthiest among us.
