2018 Ford Super Duty is Canada’s Most Powerful Pickup Truck Ever
F
ord has announced it has created the most powerful and capable heavy-duty truck ever with the 2018 Super Duty. Thanks to a newly upgraded 6.7-litre Power Stroke diesel engine, the 2018 Super Duty will offer best-inclass horsepower and torque with ratings of 450 horsepower and 935 lb-ft. respectively. These are both improvements of 10 over the 2017 model, while the truck also provides a best-in-class of 34,000 lbs. of gooseneck towing, a best-in-class of 21,000 lbs. of conventional hitch towing, and finally a best-in-class of 7,360 lbs. payload capacity. The upgrades to the 6.7-litre Power Stroke engine include redesigned cylinder heads, and optimized Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2018
fuel and turbo calibrations to take advantage of the increased cylinder head capacity for increased power. Currently, Ford is the only heavy-duty truck manufacturer that designs and builds its own diesel engine and transmission combination, which ensures the powertrain works seamlessly with all chassis components and vehicle calibrations.

Canadian Truck Sales Strong in 2017 It appears that 2017 was a strong year for Canadian light truck sales, as most manufacturers experienced some growth with some even having their best years ever to date. For starters, it should come as no surprise that the Ford F-Series is the best-selling pickup in Canada for the 52nd consecutive year, and the best-selling vehicle in Canada overall for the eighth consecutive year. Ford’s North American rival GM also experienced some truck sales success in 2017 with the Chevrolet Truck brand experiencing its best year in terms of sales since 1997, and the GMC brand experiencing its best year ever, aided by Sierra and Canyon sales. Although FCA Canada saw a drop in overall sales, the Ram brand finished with a hat-trick of sales claims including the best sales year on record for the brand overall, the best year ever for pickup truck sales, and the Ram pickup being the second-highest selling vehicle in Canada for the year. For the sixth consecutive year, Toyota Canada reported its best year ever for truck sales with 136,586 vehicles sold, which is up 6.2 percent from last year. Finally, Nissan also enjoyed some success when it comes to truck sales, aided heavily by a completely refreshed and redone Titan lineup that saw 5,692 full-size trucks sold, which is a 109.7-percent increase over 2016.
Chevrolet Announces 4500HD and 5500HD Medium Duty Trucks Chevrolet has announced that it will be unveiling its all-new Silverado Class 4 and 5 chassis cab trucks at The Work Truck Show 2018, which will take place March 6th to 9th in Indianapolis. The show serves as the perfect place for such an announcement, as it is the largest work truck event and is expected to draw more than 11,000 public and private fleet truck operators, dealers and equipment distributors. The all-new trucks will be available in regular and crew cab models with both 2WD and 4WD capability and a wide range of GVWRs and wheelbases. They (of course) will be powered by both Duramax diesel engines and Allison transmissions and will be offered with Chevrolet’s expanding suite of driver connectivity and fleet management solutions including OnStar, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, and a number of telematics offerings. Additional technical specifications will be announced after the unveiling in Indianapolis, with production slated to begin in late 2018.

Volkswagen Reportedly Files U.S. Trademark for Amarok Name According to a report from Motrolix.com, Volkswagen has filed a trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for the Amarok name, which of course is the name of the German automaker’s mid-size pickup truck sold in other markets outside of North America. The report stated that the application process began back in late November of last year and although some will definitely interpret it as the early stages of Volkswagen offering the Amarok for purchase here in North America, it is suggested that this may just be VW protecting itself by securing the name should it ever decide to bring the truck over here. In the past, VW executives have suggested that there are no immediate plans to bring the Amarok to North America, despite the resurgence of the mid-size truck market here in the last few years with the return of GM’s Colorado/Canyon twins, the continued success of the Toyota Tacoma, the forthcoming 2019 Ford Ranger, and the rumoured next-gen Nissan Frontier. It’s no question that if it were to come over here, the Amarok would definitely pique some people’s interest, but until any more indication is made that this is actually a possibility, for now this remains food for thought.
The Diesel-Powered 2018 Ford F-150 is Almost Here When the F-150’s recent mid-cycle refresh was announced back in late Summer, one of the major takeaways was the fact that we would soon be seeing the first ever diesel-powered F-150 hit the market. A few months have passed since then and now word has come down from Ford that we will be seeing deliveries of the diesel F-150 beginning this Spring. More information has come out about the new powertrain that will be added as an option to the F-150, which now sees its total engine options go up to six. The 3.0-litre Power Stroke diesel will share many of the same proven technologies found in the Super Duty’s larger 6.7-litre Power Stroke and will push out an impressive 250 horsepower and 440 lb-ft. of torque. This allows the truck to deliver 11,400 pounds of towing capacity and 2,020 pounds of payload capacity. Peak torque for the new engine comes at just 1,750 rpm with strong torque delivery continuing throughout the rpm range, which is the ideal setup for towing or hauling heavy loads for long distances. The new V6 diesel will feature the same compacted-graphite iron block material construction and forged steel crank used in the 2.7-litre EcoBoost engine, which not only reduces weight, but actually adds strength. In terms of the turbocharger for the new powertrain option, Ford has chosen a highly-efficient, variable-geometry turbocharger that will allow for greater responsiveness and reduced turbo lag. A standard SelectShift 10-speed automatic transmission has been specifically calibrated for use with the new Power Stroke V6 and will maximize shift points and gear ratios to optimize power, low-rpm torque and efficiency. The diesel engine option will be available for both 4x2 and 4x4 F-150s in the Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum edition SuperCrew trucks with either bed configuration, as well as the SuperCab trucks with the 6.5-foot bed. More details will surely be following as we get closer to the actual delivery date, such as the fuel consumption numbers, which Ford says will be available in the Spring.

The 2018 Ca Truck King C Story and photos by Howard J Elmer
his year’s Canadian Truck King Challenge consisted of mid-size, full-size and HD entries – ten trucks in T all - all vying for a win in what is now the 11th year of the Challenge. We tested ten 2018 pickup trucks covering the 2500 HD segment; two midsize and five full-size pickups completed the rest of the 2018 entries. A complete list of scores by model follow, revealing our choice for the winner of the 2018 Canadian Truck King Challenge.
The Testing Method: As most readers know, the Canadian Truck King Challenge does what we call “real world testing.” Our journalist judges drive the trucks on a prescribed course empty, then with payload and finally towing a trailer on this same route - one after the other, back-to-back. This year, judges drove more than 3,000 kms during testing, while scoring each truck across 20 different categories. These totals are then averaged across the field of judges and converted to a percentage out of 100.
anadian Challenge
The HD trucks and the midsize category used our usual Head River test loop, while half-tons were tested on a new loop in Halton Hills using the same method. Midsize trucks carried a payload of 500 lb and towed 4,000 lb. The half-tons hauled payload of 600 lb and towed 7,000 lb, while the ž-tons towed 10,000 lb and used 1,000 lb for payload. The weights we use never exceed those published manufacturer limits. Fuel Economy: Each year, we use electronic data recorders during testing to capture real-world fuel economy. An outside company, FleetCarma, collects and translates the data from each truck, giving us a unique fuel economy report, one that shows not only empty consumption, but also consumption while loaded and while towing. For these 2018 models, the study will be available in its entirety later in February at our website. www.truckking.ca
2018 Mid-Size Trucks The midsize segment was particularly interesting this year, as both the contenders were specific off-road models. Toyota supplied us with the Tacoma TRD Pro and Chevrolet sent us a Colorado ZR2 diesel. We were fortunate to get these early in the fall, when there was lots of rain and mud. As with all the contenders this year, we shot video match-ups which you can view at our You Tube channel. Through our website – www.truckking.ca just look for Truck King TV; links to all the 2018 test videos are listed there.

Note: 2017 model (no changes for 2018)
Overall Winner: 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 LTZ The Winner of this year’s Challenge is a truck that has been refined year after year, adding technology and improving its diesel engine. It’s now, in the opinion of the judges, the best 2500-series HD hauler on the market. This 2018 version of the Chevy Silverado HD came to us equipped with a new generation of the 6.6L V8 turbo-diesel. It’s been redesigned with a new cylinder block and heads. Its oil and coolant flow capacity has been increased and the turbocharging system is now electronically controlled. Horsepower has increased to 445 and torque now reaches 910 lb-ft. Ninety percent of both numbers are achieved at just 1,550 rpm. A new two-piece oil pan makes the Duramax quieter and also houses an integrated oil cooler with 50-percent greater capacity than found on the old engine. Of particular interest to Canadians will be the new Duramax cold-weather performance. With microprocessor-controlled glow plugs, the engine requires less than three seconds to preheat in temps as low as minus-29C. These new ceramic glow plugs adjust current to each plug based on outside temperature. This new engine continues to be coupled to the Alison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission which has a stellar reputation. Also new is a redesigned air intake system which uses an integrated hood scoop that traps snow, sleet and rain. It drains it away from the breather, allowing cool dry air to get to the engine without clogging it up. But past the mechanical updates, this Chevrolet impresses with the number of electronic driver assist features that make moving loads easier and safer over all. Among many are a new Digital Steering Assist that improves road handling and a new tire pressure monitoring system now including a tire fill alert. All full Driver Alert Packages include Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert, Safety Alert Seat and Front and Rear Park Assist. GM’s longtime StabiliTrak stability control system has been updated to include rollover mitigation technology, a tie-in to the trailer sway control and hill start assist. Visual help is found in the Chevrolet MyLink with an 8-inch-diagonal touchscreen. Of particular interest is the camera system that broadcasts on this centre-mounted touchscreen (now standard on all models with cargo box). It shows reversing images that make hooking up easy – whether it’s to the bumper hitch or the in-bed fifth-wheel. An

FEATURE: NORTH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW
All About Trucks! Story and photos by Howard J Elmer, additional photos courtesy of the manufacturers
P
ickup trucks are popular throughout Canada for so many reasons, but if you work or tow with them – well, a lot of what I saw at this year’s Detroit Auto Show will be of interest to you. I saw a whole new wave of iron (with a lot of aluminum thrown in) coming from each of the builders at a show that for a change was dominated by trucks. So, what did I see? First is the re-introduction of the Ford Ranger; then the next generation of the Chevy Silverado and also the 2019 Ram 1500 – the first time it’s really been all new since ‘09. Each one is a new truck with new chassis, drive gear and powertrains. No warmed-over models with a dab of new paint this year! But past the obvious next-gen headlines, there is a further seismic shift going on in the truck world - Diesel. For the first time ever, each of the “Detroit” builders will offer a small-displacement diesel engine in its half-ton trucks. Three litres in size, to be exact. So, while Ram took the lead on this front, both Ford and GM have now committed to a diesel-powered half-ton and this one development alone should have a profound impact on the market. You will now be able to cross-shop not only the brands, but the diesel engines as well. So, what am I looking forward to? All-new gas engines, as well as the diesels. The updated electronics, infotainment and driver assist technologies that each truck is promising. The increased payload and towing capacities – which I will test, my way. But best of all is driving and living with the newest designs from each of the brands we love. Here is what we know so far about each one. 2019 Ford Ranger Ford’s midsize truck was a mainstay from 1983 to 2011, and now it’s back. And, it’s not just the global version being warmed over. One 24 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2018
An overview from the Detroit Auto Show look at the truck on the Detroit stage shows that Ford is taking this re-introduction seriously. They have crafted a body that is different enough to make it uniquely North American. I saw a truck, which looks good, and heard a little about the underpinnings and powertrains. But, at this point, there is not much more detail. Here is what I do know. The power will come from a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine that uses twin-scroll turbochargers and a 16-valve design mated to a ten-speed transmission. No numbers, though, were provided at the introduction. Ranger trim will start with the entry-level XL package, the mid-level will be XLT and high-level Lariat will cover the luxury end. There will also be available Chrome, Sport and FX Off-Road packages. The body will be available as either SuperCab or SuperCrewcab configurations.
Inside, the Ranger interior exudes a Ford vibe, generally looking neat and functional. It will seat up to up to five people and has some space for gear. The centre stack includes an 8-inch touch screen for the available SYNC 3 system, while the instrument cluster features dual LCD screens showing real-time vehicle, navigation and audio information. One of the few things Ford did expand on was the availability of the FX4 option. This Off-Road package will include skid plates, upgraded tires and an off-road tuned suspension and shock setup. For traction electronics, the Ranger will use Ford’s Terrain Management System and something called Trail Control (not sure what that is – yet) to navigate the rocks and the dirt. And, in typical Ford fashion, I’m sure they will time the release of more information on the Ranger in dribs and drabs – right up to the date of arrival on dealer lots. 2019 Chevrolet Silverado Here is what rolled out on to the stage at Cobo Hall. A new truck that looks flatter, with stretched lights that round the corners front and back. The body is also slightly bigger (4-inches longer) than the previous generation. Aerodynamics on this truck are also improved and these slick changes influence the compressed look of the sheet metal. But, the bulk of the “what’s new” is found underneath and inside. Let’s start with aluminum. A wide variety of parts and panels are now built out of aluminum – but not the cargo bed, that is still steel. This mixed materials approach, says Chevy, makes for a stronger chassis and a total weight reduction of 450 lb.
26 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2018
ferentiation. As Chevy says “No one size fits all.” So, in addition to the expected interior upgrades that come with eight different trim levels, the Silverado will now be available with chrome and without, different grilles, blacked out trim (or not) and unique paint and wheel packages. Inside, the crew-cab gets an additional three-inches of rear seat legroom and storage is increased with unique in-seat trays. The rear floor is also flatter. GM, the first to offer WiFi, will continue to do so
The cargo bed on this new truck got its fair share of attention from the engineers, the result being a new inner sidewall stamping method that leads to best-in-class cargo volume of 63 cu-ft (on a short-box). Bed width was increased by seven inches. To fill it, Chevy now offers optional removable storage bins. Tie-down points have been increased to 21 – each with a 500-lb. capacity. The bed gets available task lighting, a 120V in-box outlet and bigger cutouts for the CornerStep bumpers. The tailgate can now also be ordered with a power up/down feature that works off a key fob or interior switch. This 2019 Silverado will also offer more powertrain combinations than ever before, including, for the first time, a diesel engine. This all-new Duramax diesel displaces 3.0 litres, is turbo-charged and uses an inline-six cylinder design. Gas engines include the veteran 5.3L and 6.2L V8s, while two other engines are listed as “to be announced.” However, Chevy has revealed a companion technology called Dynamic Fuel Management. This is a cylinder deactivation system; but unlike current and past ones, it will be able to deactivate any combination of one to seven cylinders – as needed. Both the 3.0L diesel and 6.2L engines will use a new Hydra-Matic ten-speed automatic transmission, as well as start/stop technology, to improve fuel efficiency. Over the past two years, consumers have watched Chevrolet roll out one “special edition” truck after another. Well, this effort (which was well received) has spawned a more permanent model dif-

as well as Apple Car Play, Android Auto, wireless phone charging and OnStar. For 2019, though, new safety and convenience features will be announced later this year. So while Chevrolet is showing off now, GMC fans can expect to see the Sierra get its own update later in the year. 2019 RAM 1500 This Ram, now in its second incarnation (since the Ram brand went stand-alone in 2009), has plainly stuck with its key design elements. But, they have made enough changes to the metal to bring

the design forward. Firstly, the new face has an updated Ram’s head logo on a new Ram grille – one seen only on the Rebel last year. It is now the standard - the cross-hair bars are gone. Lights are thinner and elongated – and three illumination packages will be offered. The belt-line and overall body shape can only be described as slippery and is visually pleasing. But, happily, this truck features much more than sheet metal changes – it has addressed a laundry list of issues and wants that customers have spent the last nine years compiling. To start with, the new aluminum tailgate finally gets a damping feature as well as an internal lift assist, and it drops using the key fob or an internal switch. This, along with the aluminum hood (a fixture since ’09) and several new aluminum components, has reduced the chassis weight by 225 lb. Though it’s lighter, it actually is bigger; with the overall length stretched by 4-inches and the bed height raised by an inch and a half. This Ram also makes some new claims: largest front brakes, most aerodynamic shape, exclusive next-gen air suspension, most spacious cab and increased load limits. Payload capacity on the new
Ram is now 2,300 lb., and the maximum tow limit is 12,700 lb. Powertrain choices, though, remain virtually the same with the 3.6L V6 Pentastar (305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque) being the base engine, and the big power being delivered by the 5.7L Hemi V8 (395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque). These are both coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission, same as the current truck. What is new is a mild hybrid system that adds the torque of an electric motor for starting acceleration. In the case of the V6, the belt-driven generator adds 90 lb-ft of launch torque, while the V8 Hemi gets a 130 lb-ft jolt off the line. Inside, the new 12-inch touchscreen dominates the centre stack. It’s driven by the fourth-generation Uconnect system that incorporates NAV, cameras, HVAC, and infotainment, and it now also offers WiFi. Another inclusive option is the harman/kardon 900-watt audio system driving 19 speakers and a 10-inch subwoofer in the truck. Ram Box continues to be offered, with a new 115V plug and in-box lighting. The 2019 Ram 1500 will get four new colours, including the first use of Tri-coat paint with Ram: Billet Metallic, Ivory White Tri-coat, Patriot Blue Pearl, and Diamond Black Crystal Pearl. There will also be a choice of sixteen new wheel designs available in 18-inches up to 22-inch diameter. Also driven onto the show stage was a Ram Rebel with a new 4x4 Off-Road package. This truck features 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires, an electronic locking rear differential, one-inch factory lift, Bilstein shocks and unique air suspension. The underbody features several skid plates, tow hooks and hill-descent control. Nice to see that this package isn’t just about stickers anymore. So, while Detroit introductions are the beginning – rest assured there is much more information to come on each of these trucks as we move through the year towards their actual arrival at dealers.

FEATURE: FUN TRUCKS
Fun Trucks Five Ways (with a twist!)
Story and photos by Dan Heyman
A
s hard as it is to believe, the pickup is actually going through a bit of a resurgence as of late. It’s hard to believe because when you’re selling this much of a model (the Ford F-150 continues to be the best-selling vehicle in Canada, as it has been for decades), what room for “resurgence” is there? Well, look no further than the small truck segment to see what we mean. For years, the Japanese had it all to themselves with the Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tundra, the latter almost cult-like in its following. First the Dodge Dakota dies, then the Ford Ranger and the final nail in the coffin: the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon twins delivered their last load after the 2012 model year.
Now, however, the GMs have returned, and they’re doing rather well, even providing a diesel option. The Ranger name has lived on in other markets, but only recently did Ford announce its return to Canada and the U.S. There’s no sign of the “Dakota” nameplate returning at Ram, and it seems Mopar lovers are going to have to wait a little longer for that Wrangler pickup we keep hearing about; when the latest Wrangler rolled on to the stage at this year’s L.A. Auto Show, there was no pickup version in sight. Amidst all this, Toyota released an all-new Tacoma. Much to their chagrin, however, they no longer had the segment all to themselves. What all this competition has done, you see, is asked manufacturers to think out of the box a little, which is great for us consumers. Pretty much every pickup, now, has a special, more lifestyle-y trim that puts a little more focus on something other than the utilitarian aspects. Perhaps the uniqueness will pull buyers away from other brands; perhaps it will even have crossover and SUV buyers thinking more about a truck for their everyday needs. Either way, we consumers benefit, and with these five trucks, you’ll see why. Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro There have been TRD Tacomas before, but never quite like this. The TRD Pro gets all manner of off-roading additions, including standard fitment of rock-crawl mode, chunky Kevlar-reinforced tires, raised suspension and unique styling to separate it from other Tacomas. The engine remains the same; it’s a 3.5-litre V6 with variable valve timing good for 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. With the exception of rock-crawl, the transmission’s the same six-
38 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2018
speed auto, too. It’s not the most powerful motor here – we found it straining under tough loads, such as uphill highway climbs – but it is a fuel-efficient one, making about 14L/100 km during our test. The real difference comes underneath. The special Fox internalbypass dampers have been tuned for more rigorous off-road use, but manage to stay composed during everyday driving. We didn’t get the sense that the softer shocks or higher ride height made for overly bouncy progress. While we didn’t get the opportunity to actually crawl any rocks, we did get the chance to try the Tacoma’s hill-descent control, which works in a similar way: computers manage gear changes and throttle input, allowing us to just focus on steering. It’s an eerie feeling to be pitched down a hill with no feet on the pedals, but the system works as advertised. Like the other trucks on this list, though, what’s great about the Tacoma TRD Pro is the sense of occasion it brings. From the cool battleship-grey exterior (the red “TRD Pro” badging really pops) and thick leather seats with contrasting red stitching, to the blacked-out grille, this looks like the perfect aftermarket truck. Toyota Tundra TRD Pro While the Tundra isn’t as new as the Tacoma (it was refreshed in 2014), Toyota wasn’t about to let the smaller truck’s bigger sibling go without. Having said that, likely because Toyota as still stuck with a decadeold platform with which to work (same 5.7-litre iForce V8 engine, same six-speed BorgWarner automatic), “TRD Pro-ing” the Tacoma amounts to little more than a similar (but not quite) graphics treatment to the Tacoma, some mouthier exhaust, upgraded Bilstein shocks and special wheels and tires. No rock crawling or internalbypass trickery here. Still, though, the Tundra is not the best-looking truck to start, and the TRD Pro transformation does a ton to change that. The grey paint is even more imposing when there’s more of it; the same goes for the enormous blacked-out grille that really only gets eclipsed on
this list by the Raptor’s gaudy number. The truck still looks a little dopey straight on, though, thanks to the small headlamp lenses. It’s a shame you lose the cool red badging seen on the Tacoma, though, at least the seats get it; they’re the same items found in the smaller truck, which is a good thing. Of all the trucks here, though, the Tundra is the most workmanlike of the bunch. It’s got the biggest bed, the smallest cab and is neckand-neck with the Raptor when it comes to seating position height. It also has acres of cheap plastics - doors, dash, infotainment – so closing your eyes, and just feeling the various cabin surfaces will leave very little to the imagination. It also drives the most truck-like, here, all the way down to the hydraulically-assisted power steering, also circa 2006. Which is actually kind of refreshing; the Tundra is massively roomy inside (and can get roomier than what’s seen here; we had the smaller of two available cab sizes), the storage bin underneath the back seats is ample and the step in is huge…wait a minute. That last one’s not so great. Could’ve used a sideboard or at least a grab handle, there. Even at 6’3”, I feel like I need a running start to vault up into this thing.
FEB/MAR 2018 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 39
– like the Tacoma – both crawl-control and hill-descent control. I’ve been rock-crawling with the Grand Cherokee and can safely say it performs a whole lot better than you’d think a mostly-luxury SUV should. Remember; “Trail Rated” still means something at Jeep, and they don’t stamp those badges on their products (in bright red, in the case of the Trailhawk) on just anything. They have to actually be able to tackle trails, from Moab to Mojave. Our tester was fitted with a Hemi V8; you can get it with a Pentastar V6, too, but you really need that V8 rumble to get the full effect of something with this much presence. Then again, the lighter V6 engine would likely help make for some more agile handling both on- and off-road, but that V8 growl is just so addictive. Makes the Tundra, special exhaust or no, seem almost pedestrian. It makes 360 hp and 390 lb-ft, by the way. Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk Ahh, the “Black Jeep” of the bunch (see what I did, there?). No, there’s no pickup bed, but unless you include the TRD Pro version of the 4Runner, there really isn’t anything quite like the Trailhawk out there. Nothing that provides quite the same flare, while at the same time being somewhat civilized; it’s the most comfortable vehicle here, bar none.
You do notice from time to time, however, that this is a little more hard core than the Summit or Overland versions of the truck. The noise generated by those knobby tires, for example, tends to reverberate through the cabin at surprisingly high decibels, especially as the tarmac gets choppy. That’s a bit of a problem, but the cushy seats, smooth 8-speed transmission and well-tuned dampers make for a ride that is, overall, a comfortable one.
That shouldn’t be surprising considering its unibody, non-truck digs, but other aspects of it suggest it should be just as rough ‘round the edges as the other guys. Off-road tires, tow hooks, plastic cladding, squared-off fenders - even the (optional) graphics all serve to show you that this ain’t yer average Cherokee.
Ford F-150 Raptor It’s lost two cylinders for 2017, but has gained two turbochargers and more power (450 hp, 350 lb-ft of torque) in their stead, and has lost weight while it’s at it. It’s enough to have those big, developed-forRaptor Bridgestone KO2 tires spinning on tarmac if you really put the boot to it. Sounds pretty good, too; there’s dual-exit exhausts for everyone’s listening pleasure, and digitally-enhanced noise for those riding inside. V8? What V8?
In the practical sense, what all this does is have the Trailhawk trim provide almost 11 inches of ground clearance, as well as adding

black/red seating and of course, the glorious Hemi V8 good for 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque, plus that great bellow through twin tailpipes. Still, when it comes to the drive, this one’s truck-like feel is second on this list only to the Tundra. It’s also second only to the Tundra when it comes to payload and towing capacity, providing a nice feather in the Rebel’s bonnet. Not that it doesn’t get its fair share of creature comforts; the UConnect infotainment system remains one of the best in the business, though there’s still no support for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Still, though, at 8.4 inches, the screen is massive, the graphics displayed thereon are modern and it’s responsive, too.
Well, not quite. The turbo does take some time to spool, meaning you’ll never get the same instantaneous belt of power you would have with last year’s 6.2-litre V8. Once you get those turbos spooling, however, hold on tight; the Raptor is a tall truck (330 extra cm of lift will do that), and it will squat a little on its hind legs as you set off. Once you’ve done so, however, the power continues to flow thick and fast, and with a little electronic boost for the engine note, you’ll forget the lack of a V8 right quickly.
You’ll likely forget all that once you start delving into the Rebel’s drive, though. Power from the naturally-aspirated V8 is rich and linear, and while the steering doesn’t really have much in the way of feel, the coil-spring rear suspension does its part to both smooth out the ride and provide a bit of a handling boost. It really is all about that engine, though, perhaps more here than anywhere else on this list.
While the Raptor may not be as “practical” as its standard F-150 siblings, you still get the flat load-floor in the cabin, 10-speed automatic transmission with tow-haul mode (you can lock out gears from top to bottom if you don’t want the transmission to constantly be hunting through 10 gears) and easy-access step for the bed. That last one’s even more important considering how tall the Raptor is overall. Ram 1500 Rebel The workhorse of the group has to be this baby. Based on the massively high-selling Ram 1500, the Rebel gets chunkier rubber, snarling front end, extra plastic cladding around the fenders, FEB/MAR 2018 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 41

FEATURE: DODGE POWER WAGON
A Power Wagon tow truck at an American Truck Historical Society meet in Baraboo, Wis.
Prices on “Army”-Style Power Wagons are Rising Story and photos by John Gunnell
M
any years ago, when we lived in New York City, Con Edison supplied all the electricity, and this giant utility company used a fleet of Dodge Power Wagons as its primary service truck. We’d venture to guess that if Con Ed had saved all those trucks until 2018, they could have sold the fleet and lit up the city for a year or two for free. That’s how valuable these trucks have been getting. Dodge Power Wagons introduced the advantages of four-wheel drive to many truck users. The Power Wagons we’re talking about are the kind that look somewhat like “Army trucks,” rather than pickup trucks. The original civilian versions of the Power Wagon The Power Wagon tow truck at Baraboo was pulling another nicely restored Power Wagon.
had a military look because they were derived from Dodge’s 3/4ton WC series of World War II military trucks. However, the civilian versions are somewhat different in that they have flatter fenders. They are known as FFPW Power Wagons. The Marketing of these began late in 1945. These trucks were built as late as 1971 (and 1978 for the export market) and the first light-duty (pickup type) civilian Power Wagons bowed n 1956-1957 with the introduction of the W100 thru W600 trucks. The Power Wagon nameplate was discontinued in 1981 with the introduction of the Dodge Ram. Four-wheel-drive models were then marketed as “Power Rams” until 1993. The Power Wagon name was re-introduced in 2005. In 2010, the name was used only on one truck—a Dodge Ram Crew Cab model with a short load bed. This article focuses on the rising collector values of the WC Series military trucks and the FFPW civilian trucks. The latter came in several different series, but all are generally thought of as militarystyle Power Wagons, even if they were civilian models. Let’s take a look at what prices are being asked for these trucks. Four of the Power Wagons are seen in the January 2018 issue of Hemmings Motor News and each is priced higher than the previous one. The first is a 1941 WC5 ½-ton model and the advertiser states 60 were made. This one has a good frame and good sheet

metal and an engine that turns. However, it needs a total restoration and the asking price for the truck “As Is” was $7,500. Second up is a 1947 WDX model with a wrecker that runs and drives and has all working gauges except the fuel gauge. The wrecker unit cranks in both directions, but overall the truck looks like what most people call a “barn find.” A seller in Tennessee was asking $12,000 for this Power Wagon wrecker.
Greg Risk brought his 1954 Power Wagon fire truck from Toledo, Ohio to the American Truck Historical Society’s 2018 convention in Des Moines, Iowa.
Military-style Power Wagon was customized for display at the 2016 SEMA Show in Las Vegas.
A third Power Wagon for sale is a 1949 B-1-PW 128 model that started out as a fire department brush truck in the Western United States. It has only 5,747 miles (which the previous owner “firmly believes” is accurate.) The firefighting equipment has been removed and the cargo bed has been replaced for one reason or another. The seller is asking $30,000 for this truck. The fourth Power Wagon is a 1953 model that’s in very original condition with a factory-installed wrecker unit mounted on it from new. The truck was used by the original owners until they decided to retire it from towing. They then restored it and used it on their car dealership’s showroom floor. This California truck came with an asking price of $45,000. These asking prices hardly “take the cake” in the Power Wagon marketplace. Back in July of last year, Hemming’s had a small display ad for a 1947 Dodge Power Wagon that had had a full, frame-off restoration. This truck was actually an upgraded “restomod” version of the Power Wagon with a built Mopar V8, a fivespeed transmission, a two-speed transfer case, disc brakes with lock outs, 37x12.50 Super Swamper tires, front and rear Vintage air conditioning, bright red House of Kolor paint, Auto Meter gauges, Sanderson headers, stainless steel exhausts, leather seats, front and rear winches, tilt steering and other goodies. The seller wanted $100,000 for his “heart stopper.” Another seller was asking only $5,000 less than that six-figure tag for a “mint, all-stock-with-custom-upgrades” 1947 Power Wagon.
Power Wagons didn’t change much over the years. This is a 1968 model owned by Glen Dickel that was at the Des Moines ATHS 2018 Convention. 48 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2018
There really is no way to scientifically pin down the prices that collectors will pay for an older Power Wagon (or any classic vehicle). As a wise man once said, “the price of a collector vehicle lies somewhere between what a seller wants and a buyer wants to pay. However, if you take the asking prices in ads, the published auction
Rick Tudor’s ‘60 Power Wagon, fitted with a 383-cid big-block Mopar V8, got a lot of attention at the Elkhorn, Wis., swap meet. This ‘17 Ram 2500 Power Wagon strutted its stuff at the Chicago Auto Show. With a $51,695 price, it’s no wonder classic Power Wagon prices go up.
Ignoring the fact that a truck can’t be “all-stock” if it has upgrades, this was a very original-looking trick with a ground-up restoration. It is even pictured in the late Dodge truck historian Don Bunn’s book Dodge Power Wagons 1940-1950. A bright red Power Wagon in the same issue had a $65,000 asking price. This was a 1-ton version that had been retro-fitted with a 440-cid Dodge V8. It was also equipped with an automatic transmission. Now, if you’re one of those skeptics who prefers auction prices to asking prices, let’s look at a couple of results from Barrett-Jackson auctions of the past few years. (See table below) If you prefer using collector vehicle price guides, three of the best give the following value estimates: for a 1950 Dodge Power Wagon. (See table below)
prices realized (which include fees) and the price guide estimates and mix them all together and eliminate your highest and lowest prices, you get a pretty good idea of what the price range is. But be sure to eliminate factors like celebrity ownership, which can bring an artificially high bid. In this case, using four categories to make life simple, we’d estimate the following: Excellent - $90,000, Very Good - $45,000 Good - $16,000, Fair - $8,000

RV-ING: LOUISVILLE RV SHOW
Emerging Trends for 2018
NO BO Trailer (No Boundaries)
Story and photos by Howard J Elmer
T
he National RV Show in Louisville, Kentucky has been showcasing new RVs annually for over 50 years now. Each year I look for the “what’s new” at the show and describe the emerging trends in the manufacture of those RVs. That has been the best way to track the industry; however, my approach highlighted only the design and construction of those units and then drew conclusions from that.
This year I’ve turned that approach on its head. I’ve dug deeper to find the relevant social currents that RV manufacturers are cluing in to. Frankly, I couldn’t have picked a better year as there is a major cultural shift occurring in the RV lifestyle right now – one I first noted about three years ago, but which has now fully blossomed. Adventure RVing. This label – Adventure RVing – is self-explanatory, but the cause for it goes much deeper than just kids looking for a trailer to use when they go bungee-jumping. And, yes, much of what I am about to explore has to do with the Millennial generation – but a lot of what I saw in Louisville resonates strongly with me as well (and I’m sixty this year which makes me part of the Boomer generation). First, here are all the things you wouldn’t think have anything to do with the design of the newest RVs: • The rise of the Internet. • People who work remotely. • More people who are working in retirement. • The growth of autonomous vehicles. • New, all-encompassing sales experiences. • The decline of “personal” ownership. •Finally, the new search for unique experiences. These observations aren’t just my opinions. Phil Hague, a renowned industrial designer, did a future-look presentation covering these trends at the show and backed it up with some interesting stats.
52 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2018
• 24% of all workers today work remotely – never going into an office or factory. Technology has moved out of the office, letting these people work wherever they have an Internet connection. • 79% of these same workers plan to work during their retirement – primarily because they will be able to do it from anywhere. • 43% of Milennials feel that owning “stuff” is a burden. • 80% of possessions are used less than once a month. This survey result backs up the feeling Millennials have (and should wake some of us up to ask the question “why do we keep so much stuff around”.) • 65% of under-40’s would rather pay for an “experience” then own it. These last three points explain another indicator that comes from a relatively new company called “Outdoorsy.” Think of it as the Airbnb of RVs. A representative of the website stated that this service, that rents private RVs for short terms, had accounted for over 3 million kilometres travelled just in the last year. So while all this seems so very new, if you look closer you’ll see another trend weaved into all of it. In fact, it’s one that many people my age complain has died. Customer service. Yes, the personal service that one human gives another. This is what the Millennials crave and are looking for above all else, it seems. When this was pointed out to me, it brought to mind a common cliché – “What was old is new again.” So, despite the fact that the Millennials think they’ve invented some new RVing trend that prizes service and adventure, it really is just the wheel turning full circle. Before electronics put so much distance between us, we all dealt face-to-face and our expectations included a full-service world. Remember when someone pumped your gas? It seems this is what the smart phone generation feels is missing from their lives now.
TAXA Trailers showed a few different versions of their minimalist outdoor adventure RVs.
54 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2018
Frankly, if you are old enough, you’ve lived through a cycle or two like this, and what they think is all new, is really just past experience in a new wrapper. Example: Instant coffee. Huh? Think back – coffee brewed by a server, at a shop, or at home was the standard forever. It took time and you paid for the service. But then, during the 1960s through the 1980s, freeze-dried instant coffee broke into the market. The why was obvious – the producers had made a cumbersome process easy. A spoon of coffee crystals added to hot water – and you

The simplicity and low cost of this convenience made this innovation so popular that traditional at-home coffee makers virtually disappeared. It’s what we as consumers wanted. Then, the backlash came. From the '90s on, younger coffee drinkers started demanding fresh-brewed, complicated, flavoured coffees prepared
question – if our modern life is always about speed and convenience, why did a new generation of coffee drinkers want to go backwards to a much more expensive and time-consuming model? The answer is that these customers wanted the experience as much as they wanted the product – and they were willing to pay more for it. As I said, what’s old is new again. The RVIA, which puts on the National RV Show, hosted a series of presentations this year which included a very interesting talk entitled “Things 40-year-olds (and under) want from an RV.” The following Top Ten list was compiled by a group of younger RVers, most with children, some of whom had full-timed, worked on the road and/or were avid weekend campers. In no particular order, their wish list to manufacturers reads as follows:
by a behind-the-counter barista – or by an expensive home coffee brewing system. Hello Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Espresso & Keurig machines; even McDonald’s jumped into the designer coffee trend. This begs the 56 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2018
1. Always put the dinette across from the couch. We have lots of friends (and kids) and we want to visit and face each other. 2. Put tank meters in the wet bay right by the dump valves and save us from having to run inside to see if the tanks are empty. Or, let me see the meters on my phone. 3. Make RVs more adventure gear-friendly. Provide spots to store and secure gear. Offer more rooftop options for equipment transport. 4. Let us control more of the entertainment system functions right from our smart phones. We are OK with running the slides and awnings from our phones, too. 5. Solar panels, the wiring and inverters should be standard equipment on every unit built – not optional. 6. Offer more contemporary interior design choices. A recent study says that half of under-40s remodelled their units within two years of purchase. We like different. 7. Every unit built should be four-season capable. We don’t run from snow – we run to it. 8. Install WiFi – good WiFi – in every RV, standard. 9. Think about our kids. For instance, motor homes need anchor points on the couch/dinette for car seats, and designed spots for baby gates to keep kids out of sensitive areas. 10. Pet Friendly. A secure spot for water and food bowls. Tie-downs for crates, a spot to latch a leash outside, etc. After this presentation, I found myself thinking, sure, I’d agree with most of this stuff. Certainly, the addition of standard WiFi and solar panels. I also like decor choices. The phone thing – not so much. but then that’s just me.
the first of a new generation of lightweights aimed at the newest midsize trucks from Toyota and GM. Now there are several models available.
More and more truck campers are being made for short beds and smaller midsize pickups. In the meantime, walking the show floor, I saw that the RV industry has already picked up on a few of the points asked for by these futurists, and they are quickly building for, and selling to, this growing market segment. In fact, it’s estimated that 30 million Millennials (North American number) will/do RV.
A couple of years ago, we first saw several vintage or nostalgic trailer designs being offered. That trend has grown and now there are several manufacturers offering multiple models. So, I think, much like the show “Happy Days” appealed to kids in the 1970s who had never lived through the ‘50s, these trailers attract folks too young to have had any experience with the original trailers. What they like is the uniqueness of them – but with all the modern conveniences. In summary, the RV industry is thriving. The market continues to grow, and with the rise of the next generation – and their unique wants – it follows that we will be offered more design variations of trailers, motor homes and fifth-wheels. Choice is good.
What else? In general, the trend to smaller, lighter trailers continues, thanks to the extensive use of aluminum. This has been a direction that we’ve tracked for years now, but what’s changed is the off-road capability of these trailers. The other factor that I need to slip in here is that this generation is much more likely to want to tow with smaller SUVs and cars/wagons; so weight matters. Another advance comes from Mercedes, that introduced a factory 4WD system as an option in its Sprinter (for commercial use) three years ago. Now we are seeing this platform being used by the Class B builders. Truck Campers, in general, have spent the last decade getting larger and adding content. However, the resulting weight gain started to restrict their use. Last year I saw

Hopefully someone else is around because that quad may not be enought to get him out.
