“Thanking all who have conTribuTed I

would like to express how excited I am about the response we received for our last publication. We are very happy to have brought this product to Denver and Aspen and were pleasantly surprised to hear all the comments from people saying that it was about time for Denver to have a publication like 1 Magazine. I want to thank all of our readers for taking the time to write so many positive comments to us, as well as those who have helped make 1 Magazine a stronger publication in this and future issues. This issue is dedicated to all the people we have met throughout our venture and especially those who believe in 1 Magazine and have continued supporting and believing in us. I agree with all of you: Denver deserved a publication like this one. I am very excited about this second issue of 1 Magazine. One of the main reasons it was created was to help you discover your fashion style, to bring you new fashion ideas from what you can find in the stores in Aspen and Denver, to help you figure out exactly what you want, and what you should really splurge on to be the most fashionable person in these marvelous cities. In this issue, you will also find an interview 1 Magazine did with renowned designer Robert Graham, where you will learn what inspires him to create his designs. Starting on page 82 you will find our architecture section, where we showcase the luxury homes of Aspen and Denver with information on their architecture, decoration and design. Here you will also be connected with a variety of the finest products you can find to make your dream home a reality. Finally, don' t miss our travel section! page 64 It is out of the ordinary; we will take you to paradise with Silvesea Cruises with their exotic and out-of-the-ordinary destinations. Enjoy!

Design Changes: The New Organic Contemporary By Gary Brady-Herndon

W

hen founders John Moinzad and David Hintgen opened AERA Studios (www.aerastudios.com) in Cherry Creek North, their goal was to offer their clients an alternative to ª the big boxº store mentality they saw creeping into the Denver design market. The pair' s goal then, as it is now, was to offer items that were ª out of the ordinary and one of a kindº pieces that were not recognizable as coming from a major manufacturing conglomerate. Need a Geometrix Refrax rectangular chandelier, a pink piglet accessory in the disguise of a bank, or an exotic Suzy Wong bed complete with matching wraparound headboard screen? Look no further. With their extensive inventory and full-service design team, AREA Studios have all the tools necessary to meet the most particular client' s needs. At the dawn of 2009, Hintgen sees design expectations in the region changing due to an increasingly younger client base as aging baby boomers begin to settle into retirement. There is less emphasis, he said, on buying heirloom collectibles that can be handed down from generation to generation. More and more, Hintgen and Moinzad are discovering that clients with a residence in the city or a second getaway home in the mountains are looking

to enhance their base décor rather than doing a complete remodel. Unlike in the past, they look for pieces that are transient in nature that can be enjoyed for a year or more, then be replaced with a fresh look to mirror current styles and trends. To accommodate this phenomenon, AERA tends to favor pieces that display a neutral palate that can be worked into a variety of customers' homes and design layouts. Hintgen said the architectural integrity of homes once thought to be sacrosanct is no longer inviolable, but are becoming mere architectural backdrops onto which new, modern design pieces are incorporated into the décor at their owner' s whim. He points to Green-friendly, eco-conscious woods that are high in demand at the moment because they fit into the idea of the Colorado contemporary style many clients want to emulate. In this instance, Hintgen said, ª mixing rustic with modern design creates a natural look that amounts to what the two designers call ª organic contemporary.º A look, Hintgen noted, that fits well into homes both in the city and across the region. The result is an adapted décor featuring clean lines, and comfortable surroundings with a planned textured ambiance that appeals to both men and women.

ichael King may have one of the cushiest jobs in Denver' s financial district. As general manager of the Ritz-Carlton, he is surrounded by one of the most calculatedly elegant properties to grace the city' s skyline in years. Opened in July of 2008, the Ritz hit the ground running and has captured the imagination of both visitors to the city and residents as well. Positioned amid the bustling financial district with easy access to the ever popular 16th Street Mall, a multitude of entertainment venues and some of the best culinary outlets in the city, guests are within walking distance or a short taxi ride to a multitude of diversions. Featuring 202 spacious guest rooms including 47 suites, 32 Club Level rooms and one signature Ritz-Carlton Suite, few other hotels in the area can compete with the bountiful amenities that await guests. For the business traveler and companies visiting the city, the Ritz offers 13,000 square feet of convenient meeting space, a 6,000

In 2007, Denver' s ever popular Elway' s Restaurant partnered with the hotel to offer guests some of the finest dining in all of Denver without having to leave the property grounds. A few steps outside the building, guests have free access to the FORZA Fitness & Performance Club that features a complete workout facility, lap pool, climbing wall, indoor basketball court and group exercise studios. The Ritz-Carlton' s attention to detail has been a major factor in the property' s success. Appealing to a younger crowd of guests, the majority of which are under the age of 55,

King said, calls for a contemporary mindset that the hotel embraced from the very beginning. All the major amenities of the digital age including

The Denver Performing Arts Complex By Kelly Sinclair

C

olorado natives and transplants alike might think of Denver as just a sports town, but considering that it' s home to the largest performing arts center in the world, it might be time to readjust that notion. The Denver Performing Arts Complex, home to Opera Colorado, The Colorado Symphony Orchestra, the Colorado Ballet, and the Tony-award-winning Denver Center Theater Company (operated by the non-profit Denver Center for the Performing Arts), is the cultural heart of the city and one of Denver' s must-sees. Walking under the 80-foot-tall glass roof that umbrellas the Complex, it' s easy to feel like you' re in a self-contained world where anything goes. The lineup of performancesÐ from touring

Broadway productions to those homegrown in Colorado to everything in betweenÐ ensures a varied cultural experience. You' ll see patrons dressed in everything from elegant evening gowns and tuxedos, to casual baseball cap, t-shirt, and jeans ensembles. The Complex is a quintessential fusion of sophistication and the laid-back attitude that characterizes the West. Creating a world-class performing arts venue in Denver was the brainchild of former Denver Post publisher, Donald R. Seawell. His vision was to create a first-rate arts center that would rival those found anywhere else in the world. Ground broke on the Boettcher Concert Hall in 1974, and opened four years later as the first in-the-round

symphony hall in the United States. Since then, the Complex has grown to include the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, the Temple Hoyne Buell Theatre, as well as the Helen Bonfils Theatre Complex. Upcoming shows this spring include ª The Phantom of the Opera,º ª A Midsummer' s Night Dreamº and ª Chicago,º just to name a few. Grab a bite to eat before heading into the show at Kevin Taylor' s at the Opera House or at the Limelight Supper Club, offering fine cuisine, wines, and cocktails on performance nights. For more information about upcoming performances and ticket information, contact the Denver Performing Arts Complex' s at www. artscomplex.com, or the DCPA at (303) 893-4100.

A Cherry Workout By Gary Brady-Herndon

T

he first thing that strikes you as you walk through the front doors of the Cherry Creek Athletic Club, beyond the tasteful dĂŠcor and enticing aromas emanating from the club's in-house cafĂŠ, is the sheer size of the place. At 110,000 square feet, few venues in the city can compete with the club's massive layout. Some might wonder if the magnitude of the facility would automatically default toward impersonalized service and a cattle-call mentality on the part of the staff and trainers. Nothing would be further from the truth. Management takes great pains to ensure personalized service above and beyond what other, smaller clubs have to offer. At the CCAC, it's all about the little things that put clients at ease. Customers can choose the workout area that best suits their personal level of fitness and comfort. On one end of the building lies the club's non-threatening cardio area and free-weight room. The area offers

a laid-back atmosphere where it's not about building a super body but committing to a workout regimen that will keep you fit for life. The hard-body crowd need not feel left out. Their machines are located on the second floor where the workouts are geared toward people concerned with developing six-pack abs and large muscular frames. The club' s philosophy works because management understands that fitness clubs are all about making the clients feel comfortable so they will continue their fitness routines.

Down the various hallways that shoot off the main lobby lie room after room of workout options from squash and racquet ball courts, to a 40-bike spinning studio, to quiet workout spaces where the noise and light levels remain low to allow clients a meditative space to exercise and stretch. The CCAC offers swimmers three swimming pools and more lap lanes than you could hope for outside of an Olympic training facility. Add to the list of amenities a kid' s club with trained staff, a nifty indoor track for those snowy days, a

full basketball court, group exercise studios featuring yoga, NIA, Pilates and other ongoing classes, and a fully equipped day spa along with whirlpools, Jacuzzi, steam rooms and saunas, and you have what can only be called a truly full-service athletic club.

EVENT PLANNER

PLANNING FOR THE BIG ONE: EVENTEUR MAKES IT HAPPEN CEO John Tobey instills new life into Denver’s world of event planning By Gary Brady-Herndon

W

hen the Democratic National Committee chose Denver for the site of the 2008 Democratic National Convention, no one anticipated the impact the event would have on the city' s future. John Tobey, owner and chief executive officer of EVENTeur, a Denverbased event planning company, was not surprised. A graduate of Mullen High School and a long-time Denver resident, he knew well the city' s potential to become one of the West' s premier destination points. Tobey' s professional training began in earnest after college when he accepted a position in marketing and sales at the corporate offices of the Ritz-Carlton in Phoenix. Returning home to Denver, he pulled double duty as event director and as a sales executive for Denver' s Epicurean Catering and other upscale event planning companies in the area. Over the years, Tobey came to realize that the city lacked a company that could provide a wide range of event services for both private and corporate clients. He envisioned a company that would work closely with customers from the visualization stage through the design, planning and implementation of the actual event. To fill this void, Tobey founded EVENTeur in early 2000 and has since helped reshape the city' s event planning scene like few others before him.

What sets EVENTeur apart from the competition is Tobey' s attention to detail in every project he undertakes. Past projects range from a table for two at one of Vail' s finest restaurants where a client proposed marriage to his sweetheart, to a gala fundraising event for 2000 people at the Denver Botanic Gardens, to corporate team building encounters, to lavish wedding parties. Regardless of the occasion, Tobey takes the visual imagery of an event his customers wish to create and turns them into reality. Tobey sees EVENTeur as the concierge of the Denver event planning scene, and like any concierge, he offers clients something above and beyond the ordinary. EVENTeur' s website states that the company strives to ª engender great anticipation for the unusualº without regard to whether the event is social or corporate oriented. While cost is often foremost on any client' s minds, Tobey notes that not only does the company help the customer realize their dreams; EVENTeur takes great pains to customize every event well within the client' s budget. The end result is an occasion that not only meets the client' s needs, but also creates memories that can be revisited for years to come.

fashion designer

RobeRt GRaham:

Style Savant Taking menswear in a bold and bright direction, Robert Graham focuses on color, pattern and style to turn everyday men into fashionable fellows By Taryn Bickley

G

rowing up in the Bronx, Stock' s interest in menswear developed early on when he was introduced to the whimsy of the 1960s beatnik-meets-mod era. Entranced by the emerging trends and movements in fashion, he worked as a shirt salesman, eventually accepting a role designing pants for Paul Ressler. Cultivating his talents within the design arena, Stock later collaborated alongside Ralph Lauren on Chaps, eventually creating his first label for Creighton Industries called Country Roads by Robert Stock. Sensing a missing link in the menswear market, he launched the Robert Graham label in 2000, where his infectious enthusiasm for fashion and his dedication to quality helped make him an instant success. 1 Magazine sat down with the designer to discuss his spring collection, the road to recognition, and his daily inspirations. You' ve mentioned that you were first attracted to fashion at an early age. My dad owned a gas station and car wash. He' d come home at night, go up to his room, and come down to dinner well-dressed in a beautiful shirt. He' d transform himself from a mechanic into a real gentlemen, and because of that I would sneak into his drawers and see what he would be wearing. So what would you put together if I asked you to describe your ideal ensemble? I' m partial to mixing it up a little. Maybe a polka dot-clipped formal shirt with a bib front or a seersucker jacket and a pair of shorts. One of the things you' re known for is your fit. Explain how you approach this. Over the years I' ve had a close friendship with one of the finest shirt makers in the world. And I' ve also worked the patterns off a lot of things from the past. It' s a middle-of-the-road fit for both the younger and older guy. And when you add the styling and details it' s a good formula.

16 onemagdenver.com

So besides fit, why else do you think your designs have drawn such a loyal following? These shirts make people feel good. Guys that have never been noticed in their life are finally getting some attention. If I say the word luxury, what comes to mind? Luxury is being given the opportunity to design with uniqueness. That means no limitations on the embellishments, details, where it' s made, or the price point. You' ve recently started a women' s wear line. How has that differed from the men' s? It' s always a challenge to design for women because they' re very trendy. We follow the trends but try to be consistent as well. That means keeping the fabrics and colors the same in both lines, while switching around the patterns and embellishments. My women' s wear designer was originally my fabric designer so she has a lot of experience.

17 onemagdenver.com

You name your shirts after people and places. Can you give us an example of some of your favorites? The Bond, for 007, is beautifully crafted with a split pattern of striped jacquard on top and embroidered floral on the bottom. The Sir Ronald is named for a collector of 172 Robert Graham shirts. The front placket is reminiscent of a Sergeant Pepper jacket. Color plays a prominent role in your collections. If I asked you to choose a palette for spring, what would it be? We love blues, purples, and oranges so you'l l be seeing a lot of that this season. And what of inspiration? Inspiration comes from vintage clothing,

buildings that I love, decor, old movies, art, travel, and music. For Spring 2009 we' ve packed our bags and headed east towards the blue-water countries of Europe. My design team and I are forever inspired by the rich history, culture, and palettes that are found there. After forty-plus years of working in this industry what, to you, makes it all worthwhile? For me it' s the personal satisfaction. I' m accomplishing something every day, keeping my mind sharp, and people are wearing the clothing and enjoying it. We' re getting people excited Âź And what' s more important in life than people being happy?

A

lthough there are many cosmetic surgeries to nip and tuck your way back to your youthful good looks, anti-aging does not have to involve knives and weeks of recovery time. There are plenty of treatments, whether you spend the day at a spa or use a product at home, that can make you look younger in no time.

At the Spa Andrea Leigh of A New Spirit Wellness Center & Spa (4907 W. 29th Avenue, Denver) believes that beauty and anti-aging start on the inside. Her spa works with customers to detoxify their body and clean it of the free radicals that cause signs of aging like wrinkles and sagging skin. She counsels her clients on cutting caffeine, alcohol and tobacco out of their lives and incorporating more water and protein in their diets. However, this is only part of the regimen. A New Spirit suggests several spa treatments to fight aging from the outside as well. One very popular treatment at A New Spirit is Aesthetic Biopuncture. ª Although this may sound invasive, it really is not!º says Andrea. Tiny acupuncture needles are used to inject homeopathic medicine into various acupuncture points and expression lines. This sophisticated European technique detoxifies and heals damaged skin cells, leading to softer expression lines, smoother complexion and increased elasticity. Meanwhile, your muscles are benefiting from the relaxing and rebalancing effects of acupuncture. This treatment gives many of the benefits of a face lift without the painful recovery and down time. If acupuncture is not your cup of tea, you might consider Electroionization. While this may sound like a science experiment, it is simply the use of a plasma field to clean the skin, tighten and sterilize it. A saline solution is used to force fluid into the skin, puffing it up. As a result, pores are reduced, acne is treated, and skin feels tight and hydrated. All of these attributes lead to younger looking skin. Colette Pertelesi, general manager of glo skincare (180 Steele Street, Denver) recommends her spa' s peel & glo facial. This treatment is a purifying and deep cleansing facial that uses glo' s signature glotherapeutics skincare line. This facial eliminates impurities that damage the skin and restores dull and devitalized skin by balancing and nourishing it. glo recommends that you continue the treatment once per month to exfoliate dead skin cells; reveal fresh, new skin; and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Because the skin sloughing process slows down as you get older, the added help from the peel & glo facial will revitalize your youthful appearance. Maintain your fresh face at home with the glotherapeutics Super

At Home Andrew C. at Tools for Wellness (toolsforwellness.com) recommends the Photo Rejuvenation System. This amazing instrument uses a super bright LED, 630-nanometer output light that penetrates several millimeters into the skin to invigorate cellular regeneration. The 12 Higher Harmonics in this Photo Rejuvenation System accelerate the healing of damaged skin by stimulating the body' s metabolism and removing psychophysical blocks. It also smoothes the skin by stimulating the collagen, tones it, and gives it a healthy glow. This system uses 50 super-bright miniature LEDs, compared to only 20 LEDs in competing products. Aloette (aloette.com) is a company that uses aloe vera, a plant long known for its soothing and healing properties, as a delivery vehicle in all of their products. Melissa Metcalf at Aloette recommends Multi-Active Prevention Plus, part of their Platinum Anti-Aging Collection. Multi-Active Prevention Plus uses antioxidants and advanced peptide technology to defend the skin against environmental attack, such as UV rays and pollution. These environmental hazards can cause fine lines, uneven tone and sagging skin, but Aloette' s product can stop this before it happens. Peptides are strings of amino acids that work as messengers in the skin, facilitating the synthesis of collagen and elastin. The result is softer, brighter skin with reduced wrinkles. There is no reason to live with sagging skin and wrinkles if you do not want to when there are so many choices for treatment in Denver and in your home.

The Ritz Carlton Spa: The Spa with the Most Ah! By Eric J. Leech

C

hances are you have heard of the Ritz Carlton as being one of the most elite hotels in the Denver area, but what you may not have known is it also offers one of the most elite spa services in the area as well. The relatively new spa at the Ritz offers amenitydense packages which exceed far beyond your typical everyday 1-hour massage session. They specialize in personalized service, and when I say personalized, I mean that if you visit there twice, there is a good chance they will remember your name the minute you step through the door. The Ritz performs a number of treatment packages, including touch/medicinal therapy, massage, skin-reviving cocktails, and professional quality makeup, nail, and salon services. Where the Ritz stands out above other spas are its aroma wrap therapies, organic body/face scrubs, thermal mud detoxifications, Thai medicinal therapies, and reflexology, which is the Eastern science of balancing wellness and health through various pressure points found in the hands, feet, ears, etc. Included with each package are only the very best skin and body products, such as Naturopathica and Comfort Zone.

If you are really in the mood for hedonistic pleasures, try their four-hand massage, which is performed by two therapists simultaneously caressing your daily grind away using a beautiful ballet of rhythmic hand massage. Body cocktails and wraps are another popular featured item at the Ritz. Using various cocktail mixes made from espresso beans, pumpkin cells, tomatoes, artichokes, spinach extracts and rice proteins, these ingredients can help restore stressed and winterdamaged skin back to its youthful glow. For an all-inclusive experience of these services, the Ritz Carlton offers its ÂŞ Signature PackageÂş which includes their famous 50-minute signature massage, a 50-minute facial, a manicure and pedicure, and then a relaxing complimentary lunch. The entire signature experience takes no less than four hours, but can take up to six, so come early. The concierge invites all clients to take full advantage of the Ritz' s many luxurious amenities before each scheduled appointment, which includes a steam room, whirlpool, and a relaxation lounge. If you' re blue and you don' t know where to go to, why don' t you go where the service ain' t the pits... gettin' pampered at the Ritz!

Need a Lift? Understanding your options in plastic surgery By Jennifer Walker

t

here are many reasons for anyone to decide to undergo plastic surgery. Maybe you are starting to see some signs of aging, just want to improve a part of your body you are not happy with, or the surgery will alleviate pain you have been living with for years. Losing a large amount of weight can leave behind sagging skin that can be hard to get rid of, especially as you get older. Whatever the reason, making a change that gives you more confidence in your outward appearance can also improve your confidence in yourself. There is a great deal of information out there about plastic surgery and many different treatment options to keep you looking your best, but your surgeon can help you make a decision on what is right for you. If you think plastic surgery is something you want to pursue, here are just a few of the options you might want to consider. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you are doing it to meet your own goals, not to satisfy someone else's.

Lifts There are two components of our skin that degenerate as we get older: collagen and elastin. This degeneration leads to the appearance of wrinkles, creases, folds, and furrows. Add rapid weight loss, sun exposure and gravity to the mix, and sagging skin is the result. One way to deal with these problems is through lifts. Many lifts can be done on an outpatient basis. While there will be some discomfort after the procedure, this can usually be controlled with medication. The

patient can usually return to light activities within a week or two, which is about the same amount of time it takes for any bruises and swelling to disappear. As with any medical procedure, there are some risks, like bleeding, infection, nerve injury, changes in sensitivity and scarring. Serious complications are rare, but you should discuss the risks with your doctor before proceeding. Here are just a couple of lifts to consider: Forehead lifts are recommended for patients who have frown lines between their eyebrows, a sagging forehead or brows that hang too low and too close to their eyes. Depending on how your face is constructed, the small incisions needed to perform the lift can often be well hidden within the hairline so no one need ever know. Neck Lifts are for those who have localized deposits of fat under the chin or on the front of the neck, loose skin around the neck, or those who have muscle laxity under the chin. The neck lift produces a more youthful neck, with smooth, tight skin and a better contour. During the procedure, an incision is made under the skin. The surgeon will then use suction to remove excess fat, tighten the muscles, and may remove a small amount of skin. You will be able to see the final result of your procedure in one to three months.

tightening up your skin without going under the knife. Laser therapy can also be used to reduce sun damage and blemishes like those annoying little brown spots, tiny veins or blood blisters and redness. It can also help to manage large pores, smooth uneven skin texture and minimize scars. Lasers can even be used to remove unwanted hair. However, just because laser therapy does not involve a knife does not mean there are no risks involved. There is a possibility of infection, pigmentation irregularities, textural changes, skin surface irregularities, or burns and scarring. Again, serious complications do not occur very often, and your doctor should discuss your risk factors and what you can do to minimize them before your procedure. Kristin Goddard, an aesthetician and the marketing coordinator at Spa Raviche, recommends Titan™. ªT itan™ is a Cutera® laser procedure that uses a safe infrared light to heat the dermis well below the skin's surface. During the procedure, the skin' s surface (epidermis) is protected through continuous cooling with the Titan handpiece. The Titan™ procedure gives clients an allnatural option to enhance skin tone. Without surgery, recovery time, or injections, Titan is an ideal solution for addressing skin laxity in the face, arms and abdomen.º No matter which route you take toward a

more beautiful, youthful you, there are many choices for how to go about it. Whether you choose to go for a full lift or a non-invasive laser treatment, you are sure to feel happy with your new reflection when you look in the mirror.

A less invasive approach to improve your appearance by reducing fine lines and wrinkles is by using a laser to enhance your skin tone. Thanks to lasers, you can give yourself a more youthful appearance by

GUIDE TO A HEALTHY, SMOOTH SKIN By Sarah Militz-Frielink

D

o you dread the seasonal effects of cold weather on your skin? Do you ever suffer from dry, sensitive skin on the arms and legs, an increase in facial skin sensitivity, or dry, brittle hair during the holidays? This year, refuse to let your skin become a victim of harsh winter weather. The following beauty guide will help you remedy the typical skin problems that occur during the winter months. At 1 Magazine Denver, we understand that certain beauty challenges coincide with the changes in the season. Therefore, we contacted one of the leading experts in the field of dermatology, Dr. Katie Rodan, of Rodan + Fields for the latest scoop on winter skincare. Dr. Rodan provided some excellent suggestions and remedies for winter problems. Her recommendations can make a remarkable difference in the health of your skin. Follow this guide to keep your skin smooth, moisturized, and beautiful during the holidays. Dry/Sensitive Skin on the Arms and Legs: Check the ingredients of your favorite body lotion. Dr. Rodan shares the secret ingredient that makes a difference on dry/sensitive skin: ª Moisturize the skin with products that contain lactic acid, such as AmLactin, to help remove dead surface skin cells.º

Sensitive Facial Skin: ª Think zincº when treating sensitive facial skin this winter season. Dr. Rodan' s plan reveals the latest in facial treatments: ª Treat skin with moisturizing treatment

products that address several concerns. Look for a zinc-based product to act as a protective agent and a product containing allantoin and dimethicone to provide barrier repair. Additionally you should treat skin with a lipidrestoring moisturizer. Rodan + Fields SOOTHE regimen is an ideal choice,º she said. Dry Hair: Approach your hair care from a place of repair to lessen the effects of the cold weather. Dr. Rodan has the story on the perfect shower: ª In the dry winter months, repair your hair with an at-home, deep conditioning treatment. Apply a cream conditioner to damp hair. Put on a shower cap and let conditioner penetrate for 5-10 minutes. Rinse off in shower, then shampoo and recondition hair.º In addition, Dr. Rodan shared some beauty secrets for keeping skin smooth and moisturized during the winter season.

• Keep humidity in home at about 50% or use a humidifier. • Keep the number of facial products to a minimum so as not to exposure skin to potentially sensitizing ingredients

The Products We Recommend for Facial Care:

1 Magazine recommends Dr. Rodan + Field' s SOOTHE regimen to calm irritated facial skin during the winter months and keep your face happy, healthy, and smooth. So treat yourself to one of the best gifts of the season: Rodan + Fields SOOTHE 3-step regimen. $160, sephora.com

SOOTHE Gentle Cream Wash Made with green tea and sea whip extract to keep the skin calm and sooth irritated skin, this gentle wash removes dirt and makeup without the use of harsh ingredients. This cleanser also relieves redness and keeps the skin' s protective barrier intact. $41

SOOTHE Anti-Redness Skin Protectant Cream Enjoy the benefits of a protectant cream made with dimethicone, astrocaryum murumurur seed butter, and linoleic acid, which reduces the skin' s sensitivity and restores the skin' s protective barrier. This product also increases the skin' s luminosity while evening out the skin tone. Optical filters in the product reduce the appearance of redness. This calming formula is filled with anti-irritants and antioxidantsÐ leaving skin smooth, even, and nourished. $77

Dr. Rodan' s tips to keep skin smooth and moisturized during the dry winter months:

SOOTHE UVA / UVB SPF Sunscreen

• Avoid very hot showers as heat increases itching and may cause permanent dilation of facial blood vessels. • Apply heavier moisturizers regularly after bathing or showering on damp skin and gently pat dry. • Use a loofah sponge at least once per week with warm water to boost circulation and remove dead skin cells. • Use products containing humectants, like aloe, allantoin, and panthenol, which attract water to skin to hold in moisture.

Enjoy a gentle sunscreen, which works well on sensitive skin during the dry winter months. This zinc-based formula keeps your skin protected with broad-spectrum UVA/ UVB protection. Unlike other sunscreens, this one soothes and hydrates skin while providing antioxidants which protect skin from environmental damage. $36

SOOTHE As Needed Hydrocortisone Lotion This is a must-have beauty product, which remedies red and irritated skin. Do not leave home without this facial hydrocortisone lotion. The green tree extracts and aloe soothe and protect skin, while the hydrocortisone works quickly to provide relief from redness and irritation. $41

great smile is the first thing the world sees of you. It is your calling card when you meet new people, and it is the mark that you leave on the memory of friends and associates. A beautiful smile makes a wonderful first impression, and beautiful teeth are fundamental to a beautiful smile. We spoke with Dr. Gary M. Radz of Cosmetic Dentistry of Colorado who shared a few of the most common elective dental procedures. Whitening ± Teeth whitening is an easy way to brighten a smile. Habits such as smoking and drinking beverages like coffee and red wine will eventually darken even wellcared-for teeth. You and your dentist select from numerous samples that your dentist has on hand, and you carefully match the tone of whiteness to the natural color of the enamel of your other teeth. Professional whitening using laser techniques can brighten your teeth to a beautiful yet natural tone quickly and painlessly. Orthodontics (Invisalign or conventional) ± Crooked teeth can ruin a beautiful smile. Orthodontics is a big commitment that can take many months or years to complete, so be sure you are in full agreement with your orthodontist before you start. Have your doctor explain the full procedure to you from beginning through completion. The techniques used for adults are very effective and with modern Invisalign braces, you can have your adjustment done subtly. Veneers ± Composite and porcelain veneers can cover worn tooth enamel, compensate for uneven tooth alignment and disguise damaged teeth. They may be used to compensate for oddly spaced teeth or to repair teeth in circumstances where fillings and whitening will not work. Veneers create beautiful, white and even teeth where dark and uneven teeth were before. Replacement of old, less aesthetic dentistry ± Dentistry has come a long way in the past few decades, yet many of us still have old dental work. Old dental work not only looks bad, but it loses its functionality. Teeth are living structures, shifting and

Fillings or crowns that are discolored or poorly done may be removed and replaced with more modern, better looking substitutes. A single bad looking crown on a front tooth can ruin a great smile ± a simple replacement can save it. Bonding ± Cosmetic dental bonding is a procedure by which a composite resin is placed in the teeth, front and back, in order to re-form them completely in color and shape, building for you a perfect Hollywood smile. Bonding is an extreme of modern dentistry, making it possible for anyone to have gorgeous teeth.

so. Not only do their designers specialize in clothing, but also limited offers on high-tech specialty skis. Moncler can put their money where their mouth is, too, having previously been the major sponsor of the Swiss Skiing School in St. Moritz, Switzerland' s largest ski school. For Moncler, supremely advanced technology, however, does not equate to compromised style. The clothing is crafted for an easy transition from mountainside trek to daily metropolitan life. According to Aspen store manager Angele Arene, this holds true for the Aspen consumers. She said that people loved the brand because of the collection' s chic appeal. She also mentioned that, while many know and already love the brand, they have a large number of first-time Moncler shoppers as well. Employees attributed an influx of first-time shoppers to the aesthetic features of the store, particularly the impressive displays in the front windows. Moncler in Aspen means big business for the town. Now that there is a U.S.-based location, Angele and her team receive orders from all over the country. ª People look up the clothing online, and they call our store to order.º (For the already interested, that number is 970-544-5558). Whether it' s because it' s useful or because it' s classy, Colorado' s newest and most high-end ski boutique is certainly worth a visit.

With European chalet-like boutique locations all around the world, including Paris, Milan, Crans sur Sierre, St. Moritz, Gstaad, Hong Kong and more, President and Creative Director Remo Ruffini chose Aspen as the number one location to launch Moncler' s first American branch. ª We have chosen Aspen for our first American flagship store as it encompasses the same style and sophistication intrinsic to the Moncler brand,º he said. ª Our brand has a history spanning over 50 years, thanks to which it is able to boast a heritage in skiing and mountaineering that is unique of its kind.º The Moncler brand, founded in Grenoble, France, in 1952, is now headquartered in Milan, Italy. The unique product has been called the ª quintessence of protection from the harsh winter, the cold-beater par excellence.º Moncler utilizes experts in mountaineering who develop the outdoor wear to withstand the most extreme elements. The development team is by no means a group of ª so-called experts,º but rather Moncler' s lines truly hold up the promise of exceptional functionality. ª The mountain is the soul of Moncler,º the company claims, and it seems

A History of Sophistication More than a century of supreme service at Hotel Jerome By Sarah Noel

I

f it' s designed and originally operated by the first coowner of New York Macy' s, it was destined for success from the beginning. That is the Hotel Jerome, established in 1889 by Jerome B. Wheeler, who modeled the hotel to emulate the spectacular lodging establishments across Europe. Because the Jerome was built during the silver boom, it was the social and commercial establishment in Aspen. It was even one of the first buildings west of the Mississippi River to be entirely electrically lit. Though the hotel had its struggles as miners left the town, it kept its doors open

through the 1940s when Aspen was reorganized into a ski resort. Today, its ornate Victorian appeal has been preserved to the minutest detail, the choicest of lodging for many celebrity visits to Aspen. The Jerome houses 93 guest rooms and suites that provide that preserved sense of historic luxury and class. Feather pillows, down comforters, 300 thread-count sheets, double marble vanities, and oversized marble bathtubs all are standard features, in addition to the twicedaily maid service, nightly turn down service, and a chaufferdriven luxury SUV. The location is particularly

attractive, nestled into famous Aspen mountains in the heart of downtown and just seconds away from high-end art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and many outdoor activities. Despite its proximity to all downtown has to offer,

53 onemagdenver.com

there is certainly no lack of entertainment within the property. Restaurants include the Century Room' s American cuisine and award-winning wine list, with access to the Garden Terrace in the summer months; Jacob' s Corner, a breakfast and lunch venue named after the plot of land purchased for the construction of the hotel; J-Bar, the hotel' s original and still authentic-looking saloon; and The Library, a sophisticated lounge with a variety of liquors and wines. Hotel Jerome also is home to the Aspen Club, a 77,000square-foot facility, which includes SpaAspen and the internationally recognized Sports Medicine Institute. Though the Aspen Club is for members only, many spa and institute services are offered to hotel guests. With so much to see, touch, taste, feel, and do, it' s no wonder that it is often said, ÂŞ The Hotel Jerome embodies the philosophy of Aspen Âą a balance of body, mind, and spirit. If you haven' t been to Jerome, you haven' t been to Aspen.Âş

Damien HirstVictory Over Death:

‘For the Love of God’ ª For the love of God,º is what Hirst' s mother exclaimed when he told her he was going to take a cast of an 18th-century skull of a 35-year-old male and cover it with 8,601 D-grade flawless diamonds, including a rare pink diamond worth an estimated $8 million. As critics questioned the simplicity behind the diamond-studded skull, Hirst replied, ª I' ve stopped worrying about what art isÐ if it' s in an art gallery on the wall or the floor, it' s probably art.º The piece is said to celebrate the ultimate victory over death, which in this case is a grinning skull cast in platinum and adorned by several million dollars worth of lavish gem stones. When asked what his next masterwork would be, Hirst answered sarcastically, ª Two diamond skeletons shagging.º The piece represented at the Maximillian galleries is not the skull itself, but rather an original (2008) two-dimensional, hand-colored photoengraving of the skull.

Galerie Maximillian Offering the Very Best in British Contemporary Art By Eric J. Leech

A

black and white definition of British contemporary art is any British-born work accomplished since the introduction of World War II. With that said, a more colorful definition would be a rather troublesome, often times arrogant, yet honest, two- or three-dimensional, artist' s interpretation of life. The contemporary artist uses a variety of interesting materials and media from which to convey their vision and/or message, including empty milk cartons or even shark carcasses floating in formaldehyde. Galerie Maximillian in Aspen, Colorado, houses some of the most vivid and sought after two-dimensional masterworks of British contemporary artists. In particular, there are two exceptional pieces we are featuring this month, Victory Over Death by Damien Hirst and Camouflage Fright Wig by Gavin Turk.

Gavin Turk- Camouflage Fright Wig: `

Me as Him’ Gavin Turk is known for appearing in his self-portraits as various influential historical figures. He has appeared as Elvis, Sid Vicious, and the revolutionaries, Che Guevara and Jean Paul Marat. ª Turk' s work is all about deception and approbation,º says Albert Sanford, owner of Maximillian. ª He does this thing where he pretends to be someone else.º Having mastered a long series of bronze sculptures designed to give the appearance of trash bags filled with rubbish, Turk has had plenty of practice in the art of deception. Donning the infamous Andy Warhol ª fright wig,º Turk convincingly takes on the appearance of his legendary hero and successfully recaptures the persona of this classic image which appeared in the Anthony D' Offay Gallery over 22 years ago. The Turk portrait featured at the Galerie Maximillian is a (2008) blue and bronze on pink camouflage silkscreen original.

The Leadership denver deserves: MayOr JOhn hickenLOOper From the trenches to the mayor’s seat, the rise of John Hickenlooper By Gary Brady-Herndon

O

n November 22, 1858, one of the most momentous occasions in the history of the American West occurred. On that date, General William Larimer, an enterprising businessman and visionary from the plains of Kansas, laid claim to a piece of property near the banks of the Platte River. Little did he know at the time, his claim was the seed of the footprint for what has become modernday Denver. Through the years, the city faced periods of prosperity tempered by both good and bad economic times. At every juncture of the city' s evolution, there were men and women willing to stand up and steer the city forward. Their shared goal was to build on General Larimer' s dream of creating a city like none before in the American West. For Denver mayor John Hickenlooper, his call to action came in 1981. He, like many others in the state' s fledgling oil shale exploration at the time, found themselves without jobs as the industry first boomed then tanked, leaving the young geologist out of work. The result was the creation of the now famous Wynkoop Brewing Company and the subsequent creation of Wynkoop Holdings, owners and operators of restaurants and brew pubs in the Denver region. Hickenlooper credits his successful rise in the commercial sector to the entrepreneurial spirit that runs throughout the Denver business environment. A spirit of acceptance, he said, that supported him in the beginning of his career, long before fame and the public spotlight found him. ª Denver is symbolic of the Rocky Mountain West. Denver is a melting pot,º the mayor said, a trait he found attractive in a city. ª It doesn' t matter who your parents or your grandparents were. We' re very receptive to entrepreneurship and new ideas. Part of Denver' s appeal is providing an environment that makes it easy to be a success.º

Hickenlooper' s foray into the business world taught him that the city embraces innovation and those people who are willing to work hard and commit to their goals. The founding of the Wynkoop Brewing Company and his passion to succeed, eventually led him into the field of community service. He is quick to note, however, his motives at the time were less altruistic than promotional. ª Originally, I got involved in the community as a part of a newly formed, struggling business,º he said. ª Over the years, I came to realize that some of the best times of my week were spent working with community activists.º Despite the fact that he had never held public office before, his initial foray into the public spotlight led him to run for mayor in 2003, a campaign he won and repeated in 2007. During those years, Hickenlooper has been anything but idle. His administration tackled a $70 million dollar deficit to balance the city budget, partnered the city with Denver Public Schools to make education a priority, instituted a program to deal with Denver' s homeless population, put into place much needed reform within the Denver Police Department, and much more. In 2005, two years into his first term, Governing Magazine named Hickenlooper one of the top Public Officials of the Year, the only mayor to receive the honor. Also in 2005, TIME magazine named him one of the top big-city mayors in the country. He continues to reach across party affiliations and socio-economic lines to bring together viable coalitions to promote Denver around the region, the nation and the world. Along with his growing success in Denver' s business community and political arena, Hickenlooper developed a very real attachment to the city and the beauty of the region. He believes the same attributes that attracted him to the area ± the allure of the Rocky Mountains, a

People are still spending money; retail is still relatively strong. I think the Democratic convention showed us that we can do anything. Fear is the biggest enemy we have right now. We aren’’t afraid.” climate to be envied, and the open and friendly attitude of the city' s residents, are natural selling points for the city and what it has to offer both visitors and potential residents alike. ª If you could measure the percentage of people who moved to Denver because of the area' s natural appeal, rather than a job promotion or some other reason, you' d see that Denver has one of the highest percentages of people in the United States that chose quality of life as a reason to relocate.º The region' s unique lifestyle and appeal were put on stage last August during the Democratic National Convention, an event that the mayor played a pivotal part in securing for the city. Anytime a city of Denver' s stature voluntarily places itself on the national stage, the results can be either positive or negative. In Hickenlooper' s view, the exposure was tantamount to a game changer with the city coming out the winner. ª Whenever you have 15,000 journalists from around the world in your city,º he said, ª if you' re prepared like we were, the benefits can be enormous. During the convention, the world got a sense of what Denver was about.º The ª senseº he speaks of in regard to Denver is that of a young, vibrant city finding its footing in a complex world of shifting realities. No one knows the challenges Denver currently faces better than Hickenlooper. As mayor, he acknowledges that the recession facing the country is a real concern and that difficult times are ahead. Warning signs like a drop-off in sales tax revenue and the rumors of layoffs making the rounds are reason for concern. Still, he is optimistic. ª Denver has been hurt far less by the economic downturn than some of the East Coast cities,º he said. He attributes that fact to an optimistic outlook of people in the region. ª People are still spending money; retail is still relatively strong. I think the convention showed us that we can do anything. Fear is

the biggest enemy we have right now. We aren' t afraid.º Beyond the current crisis, there are areas where Hickenlooper believes Denver must take proactive steps to ensure the quality of life for the city and the region. Global warming and climate change, and the effect the two have on the region' s water supply, rank at the top of the list. ª Climate change puts Denver in a vulnerable position since we depend so heavily on the snowpack to keep our reservoirs full,º he said. While his work with Denver schools continues to garner the mayor high marks, he still sees areas for improvement. He, like many others in the city, are concerned with the continued rejuvenation of the public school system to provide an affordable, quality education for every child in every classroom. As a public official, on one hand, he celebrates the fact that the Denver area has one of the most highly educated workforces in the nation, but also, expresses concern over statistics that show the number of Colorado high school seniors bound for college lags behind the national average. Called the ª Colorado Paradox,º Hickenlooper highlights the issue as one that must be solved in coming years if Denver is to attract the skilled labor force needed to drive industry in the future. To accomplish these goals, as mayor he sees one of his main objectives is to find adequate resources to support the public school system, as well as attracting new businesses to the area to expand the local tax base. If past accomplishments are an indicator of future success, Mayor John Hickenlooper' s time in office thus far bodes well for both Denver and those of us lucky enough to call the city home. At a time of crisis that threatens our most sacred values as Americans, the fact we have a mayor with the vision and determination to face the future with a positive, bipartisan agenda, offers both hope and inspiration to us all.

Sierra: The best thing to happen to the Citation since the day it was born. But don’t take our word for it.

Sierra has carved out a unique niche in the aviation-mod market: It takes one type of aircraft, early model Citation 500/501/550 jets (some of the safest jets ever made), and applies modifications and upgrades to transform them into modern, single-pilot-certified aircraft with überabilities... the whole process can take as little as 12 weeks. — Private Air, December/January 2009 “There’s no combination of weight, temperature or field elevation on any of our products where you can’t depart and go straight to max cruise altitude. On a summer day in Aspen, we can take off at gross weight and go straight to max cruise altitude... The engines are quieter and produce dramatically less emissions and, thus, are greener. “Of the 48 we’ve done, we have a half dozen of them in Europe,” Huffstutler said. Sierra is the third largest purchaser of Williams engines after Cessna and Beech and this year acquired its 100th FJ44 for its 50th conversion. “The financial meltdown offers another angle in our marketing, as we can offer an airplane at half the cost of the new ones,” Huffstutler said. “All we need to snag is half a percent of the market, and we will be busting at the seams, doing 18 to 20 a year.” — Business & Commercial Aviation, December 2008 “The Super II equals the CJ-3 in all parameters: cabin, range, fuel efficiency, field performance, full fuel payload, and at half the cost.” Thirteen minutes and 45 seconds after brake release, we were leveling at FL410, 60 nm from Uvalde. The Super II is an animal. Sierra Industries is a courageous company, and they really have taken a great airplane and made it better, by a large margin. — Twin & Turbine, May 2008 Within the last two years, a certain Citation set six speed and distance records: speed over closed courses, distance without landing, speed over a recognized course, transcontinental, west-to-east and speed around the world westbound. But that jet wasn’t a run-of-the-mill Citation, it was a modified airplane from the hangars of Sierra Industries. The Sierra facility is a one-stop shop that can perform all scheduled phase checks during the modification period, and install new avionics, interiors and paint. When you pick the airplane up at Sierra’s home airport, it’s a virtually new airframe/engine combination. — Pilot Journal, July/August 2007

From its beginnings as a Western boomtown to its current incarnation as a thriving metropolis, Denver has evolved and grown over the years with a vibrancy all its own. The Faces of Denver reflect that exciting change and growth through their work and involvement in the community. Whether they’re exploring the arts or working to make Denver a true multicultural city through civic involvement, these citizens don’t believe in standing still. New businesses and opportunities are also a part of their efforts. And all of them are taking Denver and Colorado into the future. 60 onemagdenver.com

Denise Plante By Jennifer Walker

Y

ou’ve seen her on TV, heard her on the radio, and you may have seen her cheering on her kids at soccer and hockey games. Denise Plante does it all—and she does it with style, grace, and a dash of aplomb. With a broadcasting career that began when she was just 19 years old, you could say Plante was born for this work. She started as a part-time evening disc jockey, but as she says, “I fell in love with the medium and was hooked!” Now the co-host of both Colorado & Company and the Murphy and Denise morning show on KOSI 101.1 FM, Plante’s face and voice are familiar to most Denver residents. She also has wider exposure, appearing in national commercials and in two MTV projects. Plante loves the exciting and unpredictable nature of both television and radio. She says of the difference between the two, “In radio, I can sit there in my sweats with no makeup.....which I have done often. In TV you have to be camera ready.” Due to her outstanding work on Colorado & Company, Plante received a Heartland Regional Emmy Award for Best Host/Interviewer in 2005, an award she considers to be one of her top accomplishments—aside from her family. As for her family, Plante balances a rich family life with her successful career, and that ability seems to enhance her work rather than restrict it. She knows what challenges other moms face and truly cares about them, and she feels this sets her apart from others in the field. One way she shows it is by using the Heil Pink Microphone during broadcasts as a support for the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. While she may seem like an over-achiever, Plante has a very low-key and sensible approach to success. “Truly, my definition [of success] is setting realistic goals and achieving them on a daily basis. It’s about clock-building, not time-telling. You know, when you create something or accomplish something, that is a building block to something else. Not how fast you get there.” You might find this down-to-earth Castle Rock resident with her family at such kid-friendly places at Red Robin or Chuck E Cheese, or perhaps a quiet, adults-only breakfast at B&B Café—which she loves for its “friendly environment, small-town feel and great food.” For something a little more upscale, she visits Copperfalls Spa in Castle Rock or The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park. Whether on the air, out for a chic brunch or a casual afternoon with the kids, Denise is the consummate face of Denver.

Sean Butler By Kelly Sinclair

B

eing an entrepreneur means looking for opportunities even in unlikely places, so when Mark Hayden approached Sean Butler about starting a skin care distribution company, he immediately knew it was a smart move. “It is all about professionalism, work ethic, and constant and consistent execution.” Sean and Mark, who have been buddies since high school, co-founded gloProfessional in 1997, and soon expanded the focus of their business, moving from distribution to creating their own lines of skin care, spa, and cosmetics products. Sean, a graduate of the University of Denver, has worked as a chemical sales engineer for Haliburton as well as sales manager for American Hospital Supply, selling intravenous solutions, pumps and dialysis equipment. Getting into the cosmeseuticals business and starting glo from the ground up isn’t a typical career move, but for someone who enjoys challenges and making quick decisions, it just made sense. A true entrepreneur, Sean is always looking to the future and hopes to make glo the market leader in the cosmeseuticals business. In 1999, Sean and Mark opened a glo retail store in Cherry Creek North, complete with a range of spa services and three treatment rooms. Sean and Mark say that, more than just being the retail face of their company, the store also offers them the opportunity for valuable feedback from their customers—it’s not just about great business, after all. It’s about great skincare. Sean says, “our consumers not only see changes in their skin, they feel great about their appearance.” Sean’s sense of pride in the company is obvious in how he talks about glo and all the people who help make it a success every day. “Success is something you feel. Success can be major or minor. The great thing is that you can have multiple successes every day.”

SilverSea CruiSeS: Taking Travel To an arT Form By Greg and Jennifer Walker

64 onemagdenver.com

L

uxury. Opulence. Exemplary service. All words that describe Silversea Cruises. Passengers who have sailed on Silversea ships will tell you that this is no ordinary cruise vacation: it is an experience like no other. Even among the super-premium cruise lines, Silversea stands as a benchmark, head and shoulders above the others in quality of service and environment. ª My husband and I have traveled twice on Silversea ships and find it to be the best cruise experience yet,º says cruise enthusiast Charlotte Tomic-Mowerman. ª We find the attention of the staff to be unparalleled by any other cruise line we' ve traveled with, and the quality of the food, top-shelf open bar, and room service are extraordinary. We loved the size of the suites and the fact that you could reserve dinner at the five-star restaurants and get meals that parallel dining at the best French restaurants in the world.º Every ship in the line has been newly renovated, giving you the ultimate in comfort and luxury. In their quest to always find more for their passengers, they will introduce a spectacular new ship in December 2009. The Silver Spirit, which will be the largest in the fleet, will feature even more verandas, dining choices and onboard amenities than their other ships. While on board, you should never feel uncomfortable in your manner of dress. Suggested dress during the day is casual resort wear, and evenings are either casual, informal or formalÐ with casually elegant options for those who do not enjoy formal attire.

Personalized Service There are many aspects of Silversea that sets it apart from the rest of the industry, but perhaps one of the most compelling is the personalized service every single passenger receives. ª You just want to be friends with everyone there,º says Marc Newburger, who sailed to Alaska two years ago aboard the Silver Shadow. He was also impressed with the excellent communication between staff members. After mentioning to one that he had a nut allergy, the others were very gracious in remembering his restriction and catering to it. With a ratio of nearly one crew member to each passenger, Silversea is able to attend to every guest' s every need. Some of the suites come with butlers, and it is not uncommon to be invited to dine at the staff captain' s table. Your room steward will stock the complimentary beverage bar in your room with your favorite drinks. Lyn Dyles, MD, was surprised by a special birthday cake from the staff to celebrate her special day, even though she had not told anyone about it. This is just one example of the crew' s spectacular attention to detail. ª Our room stewardess apparently overhead my partner' s casual comment that he enjoys a glass of Glenlivet while dressing for dinner,º says Dyles. ª That evening when we returned from shore we found a bottle of the Glenlivet single malt scotch had been added to our suite' s bar.º

65 onemagdenver.com

Plenty of Space The Silversea fleet boasts one of the highest space-to-passenger ratios in the industry, providing for a cruise experience that is free of crowds and waiting in lines. ª I think I had to wait one time to get into the dining room, maybe for five minutes,º says Newburger. ª I remember being surprised there was a wait.º While staterooms on many lines are attractive, they can be claustrophobicÐ a bed with little room to walk around it, a desk, a small step-in closet and a tiny bathroom. By contrast, Silversea ships have only suites, all of which are spaciousÐ as much as 1400 square feetÐ and offer views of sea and sky. With tables that are made for dining, seating areas, and room to move freely, these suites are like a home on the sea, a place where you want to sit back and relax rather than avoid until bedtime. Want to have a private party? There is room to do so. Invite a few friends to enjoy complimentary champagne and canapés or a full meal on your private veranda, which is included with 80% of the suites. The bathrooms in these suites are enough to entice anyone to sail. With full-size marble tubs and separate showers, you can look forward to a long and relaxing soak after a long day of exploring. Your maid will keep your bathroom stocked with your choice of high-end bath amenities. There is also room on the ships for spacious and well-appointed spas, gyms, libraries, show rooms featuring world class entertainment, and lounges with bands and room to dance. The atmosphere is intimate and inviting, but never crowded or confining.

Best Value for the Money While some cruise lines cut corners on what they include in the fare to keep prices down, Silversea goes the other direction: they include everything in the ticket priceĂ? making them a good value for the money. While they are more expensive than the mainstream lines, they have options for every budget. Fares start as low as $3800 for a seven-day sailing in the Vista-level suite to $45,000 for an 18-day adventure in the Owner' s Suite. A chilled bottle of champagne will greet you when you first enter your room, but it does not stop there. Your Silversea fare includes alcoholic beverages, not only at meals and bars around the ship, but your suite will be stocked with your favorite selections. While all cruise lines include meals in the pricing, Silversea takes it to the next level. In addition to dining in the opulent dining rooms, passengers can order full dinners in their rooms, served course by course. Feeling too frowzy from dancing all night to go to the dining room for breakfast? No problemĂ? it can be brought to you. Need a late night snack? It is only a phone call away. Silversea menus

68 onemagdenver.com

offer world class cuisine that includes healthy choices as well as decadent creations. Excursions on most cruise lines can be costly, and some ports are little more than cruise-sponsored shopping towns, offering little of interest to those who do not wish to spend the extra money to explore the area. On Silversea, a shore-side event is included for all passengers on every itinerary, and free transportation to town awaits adventurers at every port-of-call. One aspect of cruising that offends some passengers is the concept of required tipping. This is not part of the Silversea philosophy, so there will be no additional charge for the excellent, personal service you receive. By the time you include all the alcohol, gratuities and extra niceties that are all included, the price of a luxurious Silversea cruise is not much higher than other linesÐ and certainly worth every penny.

or Alaska, Silversea can take you there. You can even customize your trip, leaving the ship to explore for a day or two and meeting up with it again later. Like to golf? Try a Silversea golf voyage, which will take you to some of the best golf courses in the world. With the smaller size of the Silversea ships, they are able to visit sites bigger ships cannot. The Prince Albert II, which carries only 132 guests, has an ice-rated hull that can take you deep into Antarctica for a one-ofa-kind expedition. She operates polar adventure cruises lasting between 10 and 21 days, with summer cruises in the Arctic Circle featuring calls at the Svalbard Archipelago, Iceland and Greenland, and autumn and winter cruises off South America and Antarctica. A Silversea cruise is an experience you will never forget and will want to repeat again and again. As Jenny Reed says, ª Silversea cruises are luxurious escapes at sea. GROOMING

Defense Against the Elements What every man should know about keeping his hair, skin and body healthy during the cold winter months. By Greg Walker

T

he winter is a harsh seasonĂ? not only with the cold, but also with the dry air, which can wreak havoc on hair and skin, and add an additional level of stress to our daily routine. In winter, the humidity is pulled out of the air and the air pulls moisture out of us. The winter' s toll is exacted from a man' s appearance, making us look rougher and older, and not necessarily in a good way. Fighting the effects of winter is a special task requiring special expertise. To gain that expertise we did some homework to find out how to take care of ourselves through the harsh wintry months Âą we are not just talking about skin care here; we are talking about taking care of the Inner Man as well. Here are a few suggestions. Get a shave. You' ve seen them in the movies Âą Doc Holliday sitting in the reclining chair with a froth of soap suds about his face and the timid barber approaching his neck with a straight razor. In truth, even in that era, a professional shave was a luxury that gentlemen afforded themselves, and for good reason. Because the cold, dry air causes us to shed more skin in winter, exfoliation is even more important than during the rest of the year, and a natural bristle brush is just about the best exfoliating surface there is. Additionally, the high quality shaving soaps used in gentlemen' s spas are rich with lanolin, one of nature' s finest moisturizers. A shave done by a professional with a fresh, sharp razor is a treat in many ways: it is relaxing and warming, and the shave will be closer and smoother than any you have had in your life. It is, in our modern sense, a true spa treatment that every gentleman should afford himself periodically. The main risk is that you may not want to go back to shaving yourself! Get a manicure. In the twenty-first century, all too often we consider manicures to be something that only ladies do to lengthen and paint their nails, but not so. When you meet new people, clients or friends, your first impression is driven by your handshake. Dry winter air takes its toll on your hands by drying skin, cuticles and, yes, even nails. It causes calluses to be rougher and more evident than during the warmer months. A professional manicure will attend to moisturizing as well as trimming and finishing, leaving you with clean, well-groomed nails and a smooth finish on your hand.

Get a pedicure. Again, we think of this as being a treat for the ladies, but it is not just for them. As with your hands, the dry winter air makes feet rougher and less comfortable. Getting the calluses buffed off your feet and the nails properly shaped and trimmed feels great, and it makes long days on your feet much more bearable. If you are looking for a treat for yourself or a gift for the man in your life, and one that he probably would not think of for himself, go for the pedicure. It is addictive. Get a massage. This is something that athletes have done on a regular basis to compensate for the punishment that they put their bodies through. How about doing the same for yourself? Winter is a stressful time, with the slick roads and the foul weather. Relieving stress is a necessity, and there is nothing as effective for relieving days of pent-up stress as a soothing massage. If you feel good, you look good. A simple body rub is soothing and relaxing or, if you have deeper knots that need to be worked out, consider deeper tissue work such as a Swedish massage or Shiatsu. A hot stone massage feels wonderful after a chilly day, and it provides a relaxing alternative form of massage that will melt the worries of the work week away in a soothing hour of pampering. Rubs with body oils and lotions hydrate the skin as well. Get a facial. This is one that men really need, and they are often, ironically, too vain to get it. The dry winter air dries our faces, lending to the appearance of advanced age, and an old-fashioned morning regimen of hot water and soap worsens this effect. A facial including a Dead Sea or arctic blue-mud mask will return moisture and, as a result, youthful life to your face. Facial creams will also assist in this same process. These treatments in conjunction with a gentle facial massage will take years off your appearance. Winter is hard on us. Dad knew it. Napoleon knew it too. They just handled it differently from the way we do. Today we have a wealth of knowledge and products available to us so we do not have to allow it to take as much of a toll on us as our forebears did. With a little extra care you can keep your skin looking terrific throughout the year.

RKD ARchitects: BRinging ARtistic ARchitectuRe to coloRADo By Eric J. Leech

82 onemagdenver.com

When was the last time you truly fell in love with your home? In today' s conservative, cookiecutter housing market, most buyers do not expect to build a home that is as much a work of art as it is a place to hang their hat. Well, RKD is poised to change that kind of thinking around Colorado. ª It is a tough battle, particularly in the mountains of Vail,º says Jack Snow, co-owner of RKD Architects. ª They are about as

conservative of a resort as you can get, so unfortunately it looks like we have decided to do a bit of art-based architecture in one of the worst places possible (laughs).º RKD was just a glimmer in the eyes of both Jack Snow and Sally Brainerd when they met up at CU graduate school in the ` 80s. ª We weren' t really into that starving architect approach,º says Snow, explaining why it has taken them this long to follow their passion for art-architecture. While one of their offices is based in Vail, RKD has been making the most noise on a national and international level with their contemporary, angular, and energy-efficient designs. ª There is some nice work out there, but nobody is really stepping out of the box,º says Snow. ª We are hoping to inject a little new blood out there.º Rather than admitting to any particular style in the school of design, the duo prefers to shoot from the hip when given a new project. They travel out to the site of the new project and begin to piece together the shape and form through the various landscape cues given by its surrounding environment, such as trees, water, hills, mountains, valleys, etc. ª The forms and sculptural aspects are all pretty much out of our brains,º explains Snow. ª When I start, it is a little subconscious. For instance, if we are dealing with vertical mountains, the pitches get deeper and more angular; if it is a open, rolling site, the roof lines become longer, lower, and use more overhangs.º Beyond the art form of each project, RKD

83 onemagdenver.com

also has a very environmental approach towards most of their projects. ª It is the right way to build,º says Snow. ª Being aware of the interior air quality, the materials, and the footprint that the building has.º Of course such thinking might be construed as a tad bit hypocritical when building a 10,000-plus-square-foot home, but in reality, it is probably even more important to tread lightly on the environment in such cases. Getting to some of their current projects featured in our photos, we will start with RKD' s, Squaw Creek. ª This is our own home and had a pretty serious budget,º Snow tells us. ª It is 2,000

square feet, very small, very efficientÐ we used a lot of raw salvage and economic material, such as metal, exposed trusses, and simple shapesÐ it uses solar, passive and active, and is as easy to clean as it is to live in.º The second project by RKD is called Buffehr Creek, and it is a classicstyled, single-resident home built for a couple who requested an award-winning, publishable home, at a budget price. ªO ne thing they didn' t want to do was telegraph when this was built,º says Snow. ª They wanted a home that would still look like a classic in 50 years.º Waterstone was one of the

most dramatic sites for a singleresident home that RKD has ever worked with. ª The house literally grew out of this gully, around various ponds and other water features,º says Snow. ª I' ve probably had sites that were more spectacular as far as featuring mountains right in front, but this site provided some very unique opportunities.º The home is built in three sections separated by two elevated glass bridges between them. ª A lot of what went into the design was how to sit lightly on the site, while breaking its relatively large mass into smaller pieces which would allow the most outdoor

84 onemagdenver.com

access,º describes Snow. ª Each bedroom has a patio, there are various walkways outside, and each space has its own little hidden secondary views (canyons, gulches, ponds) which are just spectacular.º What' s in the future for RKD? They have plans to cover much of the West with their artistic designs over the course of the next few years. Currently their work can be seen throughout Colorado (Vail, Fraser, Edwards, and Telluride), California (San Francisco), Montana (Yellowstone Club, Big Sky), and Minnesota (Edina), with Arizona high on the list of their sites for the near future.

ClassiC, Edgy, PErsonal By Judith Sears

i

n the decade since its founding, O Interior Design has moved to the forefront of Denver' s interior design firms, working on highprofile projects like the Glass House Condos in the Riverfront neighborhood and upscale restaurants such as the Arvada Grill. It' s accomplished this feat, according to founder and president Andrea Monath Schumacher, by putting into practice the belief that client personality and taste should trump design theories. ÂŞ Design is personal,Âş Schumacher maintains. ÂŞ Design philosophy for me is about getting into the minds of clients and finding out how

86 onemagdenver.com

they live their lives. We work with our clients to blend their current style and furnishings to create a unique look that reflects their personality.º Schumacher, who holds a B.A. from Colorado State University, got her start while attending Harvard University' s Graduate School of Design. An architect hired her for some design work, which led to another client and then another. ª I decided to ` ride the wave,' º she recalls. Laura Medicus, who has an MFA from Florida State University, joined the firm as a senior designer in 2004. To discover a client' s style, Schumacher and Medicus follow the client' s lead, conducting thorough inventories of their likes and dislikes. It can, of course, be difficult to communicate taste in words. ª People say, ` I really like modern,' when what they really mean is transitional,º Medicus says. So, O Interiors works with images, compiling what amounts to catalogues of each client' s style. ª We have them look through magazines or at images online and identify what they like or don' t like about a picture,º Schumacher explains. ª Then we put together a book of their style.º The firm begins projects with an assumption of ª no budget and no restrictions.º That may seem unrealistic, but Schumacher has no illusions that real projects don' t have real budgets. She works to understand the client's vision and then finds a way to make it doable. ªO nce we have a design that everyone agrees on we price it out and value engineer it to meet the client' s budget,º Schumacher says. ª We tend to go big dreams but that doesn' t necessarily mean the most expensive,º Medicus adds. ª It means coming up with the most creative solution.º In getting to know clients, Schumacher has found that just one item can be the key that opens up the eventual design. ª One little thing can be a jumping-off point. A client may have a beautiful tapestry or something that we know we have to use because it' s gorgeous or has a certain color scheme or a certain feel,º she says.

ª That takes you on a whole journeyof how do we make that translate though all of your furniture and your drapery.º Schumacher recognizes that the path from vision to design completion is fraught with frustration. A few years ago she and her husband renovated and redecorated their home on Sloan Lake ± an experience that still causes her to roll her eyes and deepened her empathy with her clients. ª The experience emphasized what I already knew which is that it' s extremely painful to have construction and be living in your house. I definitely know the pain of going through it.º But, thankfully, at the end of the process, each client gets a unique design that reflects their lifestyle and tastes. ª It' s fun to think of design in terms of a personality coming to life,º says Medicus.

87 onemagdenver.com

While guided by their clients, O Interior Design nevertheless has a basic vision which Schumacher describes as ª classic but edgy.º Schumacher and Medicus admire and have been influenced by designers such as Philippe Starck, Dorothy Draper, Thomas Hadley, and David Hicks. ª These are designers who' ve broken the mold,º Schumacher observes. ª They' ve done daring things that you don' t copy as such but you take the flavor of that idea of pushing the envelope.º The ª classic but edgyº philosophy also surfaces in Schumacher' s attitude toward Colorado' s frontier heritage deco. She embraces it

and then gives it an O Interior spin. One example: chrome-dipped antlers. Originally conceived for a relocated New York stockbroker who wanted a loft with a ª New York meets Coloradoº feel, Schumacher subsequently founded metrocowboylighting.com, through which she offers these unique design pieces. In the end, though, perhaps the key to O Interior' s success is the sheer enthusiasm for design. ª I absolutely love my job,º raves Medicus. ª I feel inspired almost every day.º ª We eat, live and breathe design,º Schumacher agrees. Now that' s how you make design personal.

The geometry of different shapes within the bedroom casts an incredible shadow of interest over a room which is predominantly light in color. Living Large in any Space

Roche Bobois-Living Room The modern designer is bold and would not hesitate to place modern furniture within the ornate walls of the Sistine Chapel. However, to make such a paradigm shift work, the smooth simplicity of the modern pieces would have to hold as much interest as the ornate scrolling on the walls. Here we see how this is done using layers of symmetrical shapes cast within the bold contrast of black and white.

Big or small, short or tall, your living room is only limited by your imagination... and BoConcept and Roche Bobois can help foster it

98 onemagdenver.com

BoConcept-Living Room Living large in a large space is easy, as size negates the essence of a lavish lifestyle. But when you are dealing with a compact space, suddenly you are faced with the dilemma of facade over function. BoConcept, however, is able to create a lavish feel within any tight boundary, incorporating simple, rounded shapes that look spacious near or far. Large areas require larger furnishings to fill the void. This couch and furnishings by BoConcept shows us here how to take a rather open space and create an elegant surrounding that is as comfortable for five friends as it is quaint for one special friend! Whoever said that you can have too much white must not have realized it can create the perfect void from which to show off your exceptional dĂŠcor. Here we see a simple, yet functional shelf unit behind two modern classic chairs by BoConcept. One of the more interesting conversation pieces about this room is the conversation going on in the floor rug.

GREEN HOME

THe energy of Hickory House By Jack Bumgardner

H

ickory House in Boulder is not made of hickory and isn' t a traditional house. In fact, the only wooden part of the house is the front door. The vast majority is made of stone. So, if people who live in glass houses are ill-advised to throw stones, what does it mean when people live in a stone house? It means that they know a thing or two about green design. Brandy LeMae and Joseph Vigil of VaST Architecture and Design designed their Boulder home, Hickory House, with a unique blend of modern, green techniques, classic, inspired design and good old common sense. Practicing what they provide for their clients, Brandy and Joseph intentionally built a home for themselves and their family that is a model of using twentyfirst century products and style. But they didn' t build it just to be new and modern. ª When we decided to build a house for ourselves our first priority was to make it as green as possible,º Brandy said, ª because it' s the right thing to do.º That philosophy brought them to an alphabet soup of building materials, such as SIP (structurally insulated panels,) ICF (insulated concrete forms) and CMU (concrete masonry units.) They also used durable finishes, such as concrete floors, stucco and metal siding. All of these materials

keep heat loss to a minimum. For the interior of Hickory House they used low VOC- (volatile organic compound) emitting materials for healthier indoor air quality. Since building Hickory House in 2003, VaST Architecture has used similar building materials and technologies for all of their homes built from the ground up. ª The benefits of building green are lower energy bills, healthier air quality, lower maintenance costs, increased resale value, and being environmentally responsible. Also, it just makes your home more comfortable,º Brandy explained. Although Hickory House

102 onemagdenver.com

103 onemagdenver.com

is an original design by VaST Architecture, it is inspired by some classic homes and architects. ª We were inspired by the Los Angeles Case Study homes,º Brandy said. ª Some of our favorite designers from the program were Richard Neutra, Charles and Ray Eames and Rudolf Schindler.º The couple even made a trip to Los Angeles to tour these homes. After completing their research they spent nine months designing the house and six-and-a-half months constructing it. Brandy advises other potential home builders/ owners to invest as much time as they can before building. ª It is always less expensive to make changes on paper than it is during construction. So allow yourself and your architect the time to work through all those design decisions before you break ground,º she offers, displaying the common sense that helped her and Joseph sail through construction of their home. Yet, Brandy and Joseph know that even if you have an existing home it can still benefit from ª greenº design and materials. To Brandy, a green home is one that is energy efficient and as healthy as possible. She suggests that interested homeowners hire a professional to help them ª greenº their home as well as having a professional conduct an energy audit. Next, the homeowner should ª consider reconfiguring existing space rather than just plopping on an extra thousand feet.º And they should always consider where and how a product is manufactured. She especially touts SIP construction as a ª real time-saver if implemented correctly.º They result of Brandy and Joseph' s and VaST Architecture' s efforts is a home that is uniquely twenty-first century with a twentieth century heritage of sleek lines and open spaces. The interior is warm in tone as well as temperature. And while the windows give a terrific view of the Flatirons, they also provide insulation and beautiful light. The cement floors and linoleum countertop add to the smoothness and freshness of the interior. And while Hickory House blends in effortlessly with its Boulder landscape, it also provides a comforting home for a family that champions environmentally friendly living. Asked if she would change anything about Hickory House if she and Joseph were building it today, Brandy says that they would add an HRV (heat recovery ventilator)

because, ª The house was so tight we ended up with some condensation issues in the master bath and bedroom.º She also said that they would use fiberglass windows for their ª durability, energy efficiency and color options.º Both of these products are now used in the homes they build for their clients. However, the clients they had to work for in building Hickory House seem pretty satisfied with their efforts. ª Our seven-year-old

104 onemagdenver.com

daughter loves her bright orange bedroom. Joseph enjoys cooking a great meal and spending family time in the kitchen/dining room. And I just enjoy relaxing on the living room sofa and taking in views of the Flatirons,º Brandy said when asked about the family' s favorite rooms. And Hickory House, while made of stone and modern, green materials brings the best sort of energy to Boulder-the energy of a wonderful home.

RichaRd BopRae Studio aRt foR Life By Sarah Ann Noel

R

ichard Boprae' s studio screams artist: a chic, remodeled synagogue boasts animal rugs, abstract accessories, and lion' s head chandeliers on the wall. And Richard truly is an artist, drawing inspiration from all around him. ª It' s important to be influenced and to be exposed to whatever is around you,º he says. ª Then you begin to see the art, you take bits, and you translate it.º But what is most unique about Richard' s art is that it doesn' t take an artist to see the beautyÐ or the function. ª One thing that sets me apart from other artists is my ability to create a suitable work of art for any given space,º he says. Richard had a successful first show in 2001. And after a period of artist' s ups and downs, he had what he calls an artist' s trip. ª I learned there is a difference between a starving artist and making a statement. But you can make a living from your art with undertones of meaning,º Richard explains. ª [The best] art reaches people on an unconscious level, and the easiest way to do that is by making it part of their environment.º What Richard discovered was beauty in colliding art and architecture. Using refined carving and cement methods,

118 onemagdenver.com

he began conjoining that beauty for the everyday person. Take the giant sliding doors that lead up from Richard' s wide-open living room. Slide one in front of another, and the two compliment each other magnificently. And although an observer could stare and take in the art forever, the doors really do serve the purpose of closing off another room in the studio. On the other side of the studio, a partition serves the same purpose, but is simultaneously a work of art. The looping patterns look fit to cover the walls of an art museum; but by spinning them they fan out to create a wall, again separating room by art. ª My goal is to take inspiration from existing elements, but also parameters given by designers or architects, so that the presence of my art doesn' t become just an addition, but a compliment to their work,º Richard says. ª It' s collaboration rather than imposition.º Richard has worked with several architects nationwide, building giant murals for restaurants; window dressings for lounges; and still creating fine art pieces for exhibits in museums. Now in Denver, tour the studio by appointment or visit the ª Townº gallery in the design district.

essica Adams, owner of Living Design Studio, can sum up her business in one sentence: ª We are an architectural, ornamental and artistic metal studio.º What can' t be reduced to one sentence is how she came to the Boulder/Denver area and created one of the premier artistic metal businesses in Colorado. Although Living Design Studio designs and builds everything from railings, fireplaces and doors, Jessica didn' t begin her company as a metal artist or even as a business owner.

ª I was raised in Hawaii and studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts. Then I went to France and apprenticed in all sorts of different media, such as drawing, fresco painting and sculpture.º After moving to the Boulder area, she created a piece for a realtor friend and word of mouth began her career. In 1996 she decided to create Living Design Studio, which now has sixteen employees. Among Jessica' s employees are designers, fabricators and a blacksmith. All of them work together to create beautiful and unique pieces for private homes and businesses. Inspiration for the pieces can come from anywhere, she admits. ª We work really closely with our clients to draw whatever inspiration is needed for each project,º she adds. This unique collaborative effort has resulted in a portfolio that includes a variety of projects, from a stainless steel, bronze and chrome railing for a home in Aspen to future works including scrolled and wrought iron gates and several fine art pieces. Although the company does not advertise, it has grown through continued word of mouth. ª Our constant goal is to provide people with exceptional, timeless work.º With that remark, Jessica Adams easily sums up her unique company of artisans and craftsmen who are wholly dedicated to quality metal work as well as functional beauty.

intriguing art is an incredible draw, and not one that every venue can offer,º Levine described as the draw of the center. In terms of the culinary aspects, Palazzo Verdi presents three different dining experiences: the Mangia Bevi, the Venetian Room, and a private banquet facility. The Mangia Bevi features a casual Italian ª from scratchº café which consists of a European coffee bar with Illy coffees, homemade pastries, award winning hot cinnamon rolls and an Epicurean signature creationÐ a rotating pizza breakfast roll. ª For lunch at the Mangia BeviÐ we dish up soups, paninis, signature pizzas, burgers, and pastas in a casual order and serve style for surrounding customers. service, provides lunches and dinners seven days a week. Also, a private restaurant and banquet facility with amazing

foods and stellar service available for buy-out provides full-catered European fare centered around the Italian brick oven. The Life (Re)CyCLe By Greg Walker

A

s Kermit the Frog crooned back in the mid1970s, ª It' s not easy being green.º

Or is it? Being green requires: 1. Awareness of your carbon footprint 2. Willingness to reduce it 3. Knowledge of what you need to do in order to effectively change it 4. Taking action to make a change In order to have an effect on the environment, we do not need to be Ed Bagley, Jr. and we do not have to alienate our families with our radical planet-saving measures ± if we all make minor changes, the cumulative impact on our planet' s health will be radical. Much of being green comes down to making a personal commitment to take that first step towards greenness. Once you do, more steps will naturally follow. In the past decade, recycling has become very easy for many of us. Who have recycling bins in addition to our waste bins. Our household recycling bins even allow us to mix paper, plastic and aluminum, making recycling much easier than it used to be. Yet, according to a study done by Waste Management, a national organization dealing with trash and recycling processing throughout the country, recycling is down among middle-class American households. According to Charles Fishman of Fast Company Magazine, last year Americans threw away 38 billion plastic water bottles or, in monetary terms, $1,000,000,000 worth of plastic.

A few short years ago, everyone seemed to be aware of the value of recycling, but the simple act of recycling a single aluminum can may seem too small. As individuals we want to make a bigger impact. Recycling that single aluminum can, however, saves enough energy to power a television set for three hours. Can you imagine how much energy would be saved if everyone were to recycle every aluminum can that they encounter? Currently the 32,000 tons of aluminum that Waste Management recycles annually saves energy sufficient to run 1,000,000 televisions for 17 hours per day for a full year! You know your comfy fleece pullover? The extra-warm and soft one that feels so good next to the fire on these wintry nights? It is made of recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottles like the 38 billion we threw away last year. Fourteen 20 oz. PET bottles yield enough fiberfill for a ski jacket. Recycling a ton of PET containers saves 7.4 cubic yards of landfill space. By recycling the 232,000 tons of plastics that we currently do, we are saving enough energy to power 116,000 homes for a full year. That is a significant impact. And that fleece is so deliciously soft. Glass bottles? In the words of my sixteenyear-old daughter, ª They are sooo 90s!º Yet, there are a lot of glass containers around that need appropriate disposal. Recycling a single glass bottle saves energy sufficient to power a computer for 25 minutes. Trees are our single biggest air maintenance resource. They are what make the oxygen that we breathe, yet we lose millions of them every year. They

127 onemagdenver.com

beautify our world and they cleanse the air of carbon dioxide, one of the most significant greenhouse gases. One of the best ways to save trees is to cut down on the amount of paper we use. Electronic copies of newspapers are great. Better yet, recycle the paper that we have. It goes in the same bin that the glass and plastic does, and the impact of saving trees is huge. It may sound like a mantra out of the 1960s to you, but it is more important today than it ever was. Saving a tree is a step towards saving the world. Recycle America last year recycled enough paper to save 41 million trees ± that is a gigantic step towards a greener environment. If you choose to take the easiest possible route to recycling by simply filling your recycle bin with paper, plastic and glass you are making a significant personal impact on the environment. If you choose to work a tiny bit harder at it, you can sort your recyclables and turn them over to the Boy or Girl Scouts in your area or any number of other charitable groups. They often have recyclable drives which are great things. In the case of the Scouts, they teach youngsters about the necessity of recycling for our future at an early age where it will become natural for them by the time they hit adulthood. In short, recycling is a very easy first step towards reducing your carbon footprint and making a greener future. You are aware of your carbon impact, you are willing to reduce it and you know what to do. Taking the action is all that is left. In 2009, even Kermit might find it a bit easier being green.
