Hello, this is an introduction to my digital booklet for the Glasgow Caledonian University’s Visual Identity Graphic Design course. Inside you will find most of the portfolio pieces done during the first trimester I was part of the course. There three client works in total. One client was for the University itself and the other two had strong connections to the University as well. The work schedule was quite tight but refreshingly challenging compared to my University back at home. I think I’m more equipped to face tightly scheduled challenges and make multiple iterations to develop my designs to the clients needs.

Initial sketches

typo graphic poster I wanted to study the typface Bodoni because it appealed to me in its timelessness. It is quite modern because of its sharp clean lines but at the same time you can feel a classical and awe-inspiring robustness.

As I researched this typeface, I found very interesting old typography from the UK. I took inspiriation from these posters and also the great work of Manuale-Tipografico by Bodoni.

It was created by Giambattista Bodoni in the late eighteenth century. He took the inspiration for this typeface from Baskerville, Fournier and Didot.

We were given a group assignment to research an era of design. Me and my group received Swiss Style Design also known as International Typographic Style. This style was lead by Hofmann and Müller-Brockmann. I chose the color scheme from Müller-Brockmann’s Opernhaus poster. The reasons were because it had that iconic look of well implemented grid system, big color surfaces for that and it was highly readable. All of the aforementioned are iconic characteristics for the Swiss Style. The infographic is highly simple and uses the grid system as well. I did not want to clutter the relaxing whitespaces either.

Our class was given an assignment from a client that wanted a new logo. The International Network of Stroke secondary Prevention Researchers aka INSsPiRE. They didn’t a have a clear idea on what they wanted as they didn’t have an official logo at this point. I felt as though the logo we were to design should be health related and mobile. That is why I wanted to base my logo on motion and a flexing arm. The color palette used in my logo also gives and energetic nature it. In the design process a major was problem was the spelling of the name. It had majuscule and minuscule letters mixed in and the client quite liked them so I tried to keep them implemented. I made various versions with a new name but ended not using them for the fear not knowing what the Network actually does.

Research on colors and shapes

caledonian creates From all the projects this was the most relaxed and fun to make. I could play around with a lot of shapes, textures, materials and colours. The main logo of the double C’s were the subject to be distorted and played with. I used a lot of pencil and watercolours in these and then photoshopped them heavily to my needs. I got quite carried away with creating to something with such a wide interpretation that I overlooked the fact that the event was mainly digital oriented. My style was a bit too handmade-feeling to the clients liking but these were really fun to make!

Three different designs

This assignment was for our departments student showcase event at the end of the academic year called Caledonian Creates.

Calm layouts

double page spread The last two could be a bit wilder in their layout. I tried to break apart headlines and the positioning of the body texts. I also photoshopped heavily the images provided, changing colors, saturation and cutting and pasting.

Wilder layouts

These double page spreads were created from a text provided to us and images to choose from. First two images were to be calmer and nicer versions to read and I feel I accomplished that as they are easy to read and clear in their layout.

Final submission

This felt like the biggest assignment in the course. It was a health drink with African baobab - fruit seed in it. It is made into a beneficial smoothie and sold in the same genre as Innocent or Naked.

I wanted to put a lot of energy in the design and I feel like I achieved this. Also implented an exclamation mark for quirkiness and the client seemed to like it.

Different versions

I made a lot of research and early designs based on an African theme but then I remembered to look at my notes. They wanted a more modern, probiotic drink related feel to it.
