55 Academic scene The photographic practice produces images, which form a number of intuitive cognitions about the modern world in the mind of the perceiver. The images imprinted in the photographic product merge with general stream of information and remain practically indistinguishable from the other reality images: verbal, sensory, mental, etc. In what way does the artistic photography react, within its practice, to these intuitions? What distinguishes the language, which discusses the nature of the photographic image, from the compressed linguistic expression of the image itself? This year the forum “International Photography Meetings” will have its focus on the discussion fields, located between the artistic photographic practice and the academic teaching in the major photography at the different higher art schools. It will be composed of two main modules: a number of exhibitions of students and educators; a workshop, in which the participants will discuss their academic and practical experience, as well as the specific exhibitions. The main idea of this year’s edition of the festival ACADEMIC SCENE is the focus to be on the different artistic practices, theoretical and research platforms of the academy and the student community in the area of the photographic art. The orientation of the festival specifically towards this segment of the educational system in the area of the visual is a result of the intention to: pay special attention on the educational programs in the scope of the artistic photography as a basis for the future professional and artistic development of the students, to exchange pedagogical experience and ideas

between prominent educators in the area of photography, to realize artistic and pedagogical exchange between similar higher educational institutions from Bulgaria and abroad, to give the photography students the opportunity for artistic debut in the unique environment of the exposition venues of Old Plovdiv and the galleries of Plovdiv. The tendencies of the modern academic education in the area of the visual arts and particularly Photography, offer a wide range of theoretical and practical possibilities. Within them the research interests in the visual image are focused on the points of contact of the photographic images with the reality images formed in the conditions of other medias; in the tracing of how this, which we call modernity, represents an expression of the interweaving of these different in their origin images, in the deconstructing not only the foundations of the images, but also the foundations of the realities, which they create. The idea of a serious academic education in the area of photography is to adequately include the different manifestations of such problems, to provide a dialogue between educators and students, between representatives of the academic community and practicing photographers. In this sense, the project ACADEMIC SCENE, International Photography Meetings, Plovdiv 2012, has the objective to create conditions and context for the realization of this dialogue between the different elements of the academic community and its successful reverse direction towards practice; as well as to provide the opportunity for the realization of debut projects of new names in the photographic art.

These 20 artists work in art, fashion, advertising, reportage and portrait photography. Many of them are leading photographers in large Bulgarian and foreign printed media, news and advertising agencies, and are winners of major national and international awards. You can clearly see the advancement of the classical academic education given to their authors NATFA graduates, over these 20 years. The twenty works in the exhibition “20” also have high artistic value because education at the Academy teaches photography to that “young”, 173-year-old art which is in the foundation of all modern forms of visual art. Participants: Alexandar Nishkov, Boryana Katsarova, Dilyan Markov, Dimitar Vladimirov, Elena Dikova, Kostadin Krastev Krasimir Andonov, Martin Chichov, Niki Iliev, Ognyan Stefanov, Pavel Chervenkov, Raina Vlaskovska, Raina Teneva, Simeon Levi,

In consequence of the new identity being designated to the academies, Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts converted into Mimar Sinan University because of “Higher Education Law” in 1982. Thereby the Institute of Photography connected to Fine Arts Faculty, Stage and Performing Arts Department and renamed as Photography Main Art Subdivision.Lastly in 1994 it transformed into Photography department which comprises art photography, advertisement photography and documentary photography subdivisions. But the four years education as a bachelors level being realised by Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts which is also a pioneer in fine arts education history of Turkey. Being and Symbol Since antiquity when humankind questioned its existence, we have used and are using our body as the symbol of our being. In this way, we, as the representation of our being, make visible many facts as well as ourselves in the visual culture. Indeed, questioning objective stance of photography is through the emphasis on showing real bodies. As symbol producers, we take part in the image as a versatile reflection of our questioning of our being. Human element in this exhibition, bodies and portraits visually present in the photograph are continuation of these symbols. Hakan Dağdelen’s series titled ‘Deus Ex’ created by photographing the arrangements disrupting fictional structure as well as costume and stage designed by him; hidden reality and presence of individuals not belonging to day in Şenay Öztürk’s night portraits; Murat Han Er’s portraits representing an indefinable yet prominent pain revealed by an alternative printing technique called ‘van dyke print’; Reyhan Akyol’s portraits expressing being of the individual that became ordinary and addicted to television in today’s culture; and bodies in Elçin Acun’s series titled “Whole” destroy understanding of idealized beauty, and have the audience question the beautiful.

National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts, Sofia 20 Years Of Photography At The National Academy Of Theatre And Film Arts “Kr. Sarafov” f In the early 90s of last century, rapid development of media in Bulgaria started, requiring professional standards for the quality of the illustrations used in them. Until then, photo composition only was taught in the cinema specialties at the Theatre Academy. In 1992, Prof. Rumen Georgiev elaborated a program for the specialty Photography and invited as lecturers famous photographers and teachers of cinematography. Since then training in photography at NATFA Kr. Sarafov has been at academic level. In 1992, the first students of photography were enrolled. They made up small classes of 5-6 people. This model of training has been retained over the years as it proved to be successful for the quality of education that students receive at NATFA. The program provides extensive knowledge throughout the spectrum of photographic art - from classical photography, through oil printing processes and experimental techniques to modern technology. Training in photography at NATFA started with black & white silver and color photography courses in the first two years and then continued with the study of the latest achievements of digital technology in visual arts. While still at the Academy, students make their first attempts in advertising, fashion, reportage, art and design photography. Today, these same former students of NATFA are leading photographers in Bulgarian and foreign media and advertising agencies.

The exposition is diverse, including pieces that correspond directly with the visual principles of other fine arts - painting, graphical techniques, metal, multimedia installations, graphic design, posters and stage settings. Curated by Ivan Kiuranov Media College Viborg, Denmark f The Danish photographic education as it takes place at Media College Denmark in Viborg is based on the idea that to survive as a photographer you must know how to communicate with pictures. You must be able to understand the needs of your customer – and satisfy them. You must be able to give your pictures an emotional content – even if you don’t share these emotions. You must be able to create impact in the mind of the viewer by using all the tools in the photographic toolbox. And you must be able to run a business and get a decent pay. You have to be artistic, but you don’t have be an artist. But you have to be a skilled craftsman and know all the processes in the graphic industry. You must fight for your copyright – always! You must know how to network and how to promote your own business. You must be able to talk to the man in the bank and you must know how to instruct the models and how to be the leader of the set. You must know the actual trends and you must know the pictures from the past that has created our presence. In other words: you have to be professional! Participants: Søren Gissel, Kasper Jensen, Jacob Ravn, Louise Dybbro, Janne Nørgaard,Martin Schubert, Nina Malling, Louise Kragh, Hørdur Ingason, Michael Wils, Lars Nørregaard, Bibi Berge, Anne Nicolajsen, Aleksandar Kovacevic, Jeanne Marie Christensen, Jacob Mark, Oddvar Örn

National University of Arts Bucharest f The University of Arts is the safe-keeper of traditional tools which can assist the contemporary artists in expressing themselves by linking the elements belonging to universal traditional art to individual structure and sensitivity as well as to the contemporary choice in tastes. Both the general curriculum (at the level of individual chairs) and the syllabus of each artistprofessor agree on the idea of a perpetually renewed interest in the concept itself of painting, sculpture, photography, media arts and so on, pondering between the rigorous historical and academic definition and the opening towards revitalization and continuous redefinition, as compared to the dynamics and phenomenology of contemporary art. Bogdan Bordeianu student, PhD at Photography and Time Based Arts Department The temporary lanscape that I observe and photograph is, firstly Romanian, historically datable and it can undergo analysis that are specific to the time, place and socio-cultural context in wich we live, with discourses varying from urbanism, to ethical approaches an the esthetics of the ruin. On the other hand, the globalisation can be perceived in the transformations of the public space, from the new architecture of the office buildings to the franchised functionality of the hypermarkets. This series of photographs, picturing huge soil hills, that originate from the holes made for the foundations of new buildings, continues my previous projects of visual mapping/topography of the Bucharest’s periphery, or as a part of the visual research project, RoArchive.

Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts, Plovdiv f In 2005, the training programme in Photography at the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts started. From the very beginning, professors’ efforts were aimed at developing students’ own and original style of thinking and expression. The main means for achieving this are creative discussions, working on long term projects, stimulating participation in national and international exhibitions, festivals and international exchange. The exhibition prepared for “Academic stage” reflects the creative individuality on the one hand, and on the other, the diversity of ideas realized through the photographic image. Participants: Zdravka Kokalova, Georgi Stoianov, Konstantina Jekova, Angel Shterev, Veneta Atanasova, Elina Karadzhova, Boriana Kirecheva, Vulko Chobanov, Zornica Kasapyan, Georgi Dimitrov. Academy of Arts in Novi Sad f The Academy of Arts has been an active part of the University of Novi Sad for nearly four decades (since 1974.). Its organization consists of three departments: the Department of Music, the Department of Fine Arts, and the Department of Dramatic Arts. All three departments run 26 bachelor degree programs, 27 master’s degree programs, one integrated study program, and, as of this academic year, a new three-year course in doctoral art studies based on practical work. Realizing its educational activity through regular academic cycles of bachelor, masters, specialist and doctoral studies, but also through the alternative modes of teaching (open chairs, master classes, seminars, summer schools, competitions), the Academy of Arts treats education as a developing category, and with the application of the mechanisms of constant quality control and development, permanently adapts its study programs so as to follow the standards of modern interactive teaching and learning. Students’ expo: Rina Vukobratović (Master studies, Photography) The idea with which I started my work is based on recollecting memories and facing traumatical experience from my childhood as well as repressed emotions for many years. I am trying to note them down by not focusing only on some special moment, situation or event, but exclusively on emotion. The space that marked “emotional wipe out” that I sense even today is abandoned house in which i spent my childhood.

Željko Mandić (Master studies, Photography) Selected photographs are part of a series of photographs made in public garages in Novi Sad and Belgrade. They represent the study of metaphorical and symbolic values of the public spaces. Elements of enterior, like stairs, window, door or column may have strong symbolic meaning, just like light and darkness, or emptiness, present on these pictures.

It is a state of thing that arouse my interest, my constant concern for transitory. This man made hills, on wich the vegetation started to grow, made me think at them as being some Temporary Structures, belonging to limited duration landforms. Approaching the landscape as form of an ongoing writing autobiography of our society, and with a topographic/ documentary view I allow my self to have an disinterested and subjective observation.

Marija Erdelji (4th year, Photography) MEMORIES OF CHILDHOOD Our lives are the images presented through a series of thoughts and feelings. Confronting the past is sometimes painful as well as understanding it. Traumatic experiences do not disappear completely in the later period of life, they follow the person as a ghost, but it is important to understand the problem and how to deal with it. This paper presents a symbolic picture, or childhood memories, which remain deeply incised and pushed aside. Jovana Reljić (3rd year, Photography) I have started“Zoo Workers Project” on 2012. It first began as a school project at the Academy in Novi Sad along with my mentor and profesor Dubravka Lazic. But now, as I’m still working on it, it has became something else for me. Something to explore, to get to know myself through them. Every photo has a big story behind it. Use your imagination. Make your own story and tell me about it. This is my journey in cage. Luna Jovanović (3rd year, Photography) I call these series ‘I Sing The Body Electric’, it is a reference to Walt Whitman’s poem. My point of interest is nature and self discovery through it. It is not always a landscape or a flower that we call nature, it can also be something more subtile. Sometimes I use surrealistic imagery which may seem enigmatic, but mostly tend to keep it simple because objects of nature are simple. I also use my one figure as an extend of nature and, as Whitman says , ‘I celebrate myself and I sing myself ‘. University of Arts Belgrad f University of Arts in Belgrade is the only specialized university for arts education in the Republic of Serbia, which gathers students and educators from the country and the region of Southeastern Europe. University offers a wide specter of study programs from all arts fields, as well as the study programs aimed at professionals in the field of culture and media. Ema Sabo BORDER BEHIND BORDERS/Survival of borderliner In this project I was considering the question of freedom and borders/limits as abstract concepts which considerably define the life of every individual in Serbia. The key themes of my work are undefined boundaries in opposition to a number of limitations which are very clearly defined.

Luka Klikovac Photos from series Demersal and AlterActio In my opinion the best and most useful processes are ones that we conduct from inception to completion, alone, without the influence or obstruction of other peoples’ experience which can easily limit and reduce our abilities. This experiment was an interesting symbiosis – I was trying to get to know fluids and the effects that they produce, and in return, they constantly surprised and amazed me with their unexpected motion. Marija Zindović, Illusions of Reality These photographs are a part of my diploma thesis and solo exhibition called “Illusions of Reality”, inspired by Erwin Olaf’s “Chessmen”. I attempted to portray the world with the lack of space, time and, often, movement with emphasis on human figure in static arrangements usually through the use of central composition. Without any visual identity of the naked models, the attention is drawn to my internal fears, as well as frustrations and pain in general. Milica Mrvić, Culinary crumbs by Milica Crumbs The project Kulinarske mrvice Mrvic Milice, or Culinary crumbs by Milica Crumbs (wich is what my last name means in translation) is a book and a series of photographs inspired by my great grandmother’s cook book and also some handwriten and colected recepies from my grandmother. I decided to describe these recepies and some of the advices given in the book in the way they could be done and also how the recepies could be interprated by somebody who is complitely culinary illiterate.

Mina Šarenac Sculptural Behaviour, Self-portrait Imagine to be a sculpture covered with white linen before the exhibition, brand new, waiting to be exposed to the world. Or maybe some old piece of stone left in the basement, forgotten and dusty. Nemanja Maraš, NOT FOR SALE Selected photographs are a part of “Not for sale” series, an experimental, conceptual series on the subject of prostitution and human trafficking. The series was realised in 2009 and 2010 using a double exposure technique on a ASA100 fujifilm, photographing landscapes in dark alleys on the streets of Belgrade and adding after the models in the studio. The city as a place of residence/methods of use The exhibition “The city as a place of residence/methods of use” represents the individual examination of a well known and explored landscape such as the urban one. Viewed individually, the photographs cut out fragments of time or overlapping spaces. Put together, they make up the puzzle of modern urban polyphony and diversity. S. Toncheva Authors: Nikolay Krachmarov, Petko Slavov, Plamen Tsevetkov, Svetlana Toncheva. ... and the countryside The village of Genaral Toshevo is located some 50 kilometers south of the regional city of Yambol, and as many kilometers from the border with Turkey. The latest wedding in the village took place 20 years ago, but the church bell tolls a funeral every month. The school is closed down, so is the cultural center, the ethnographic museum, the restaurant...... The village of Genaral Toshevo is one the hundreds of continuously depopulated villages in Bulgaria. Denislav Stoychev. Technological Educational Institute of Athens, Greece Exhibition title: Economical Crisis in Greece Curator: Prof. Dr. Vlassas Grigorios f Authors: Louise Gkouliamaki, Kostas Karabelas, Orestis Panagiotou In the center of Athens riots and clashes on the streets became headlines in the international press. The reality of a country fighting without direct positive outlook in a cyclonic vortex trap, with a huge public debt, inadequate institutions, and high levels of corruption. In the pictures of Louise Gkouliamaki, Kostas Karabela and Orestis Panagiotou there is one common point. We see police violence against citizens of the Greek Republic in concentrations, strikes and protest marches for the austerity measures passed by the government throwing chemicals that are illegal in an attempt by the police to disperse the crowd. We also see documentary images that capture the anguish of people for survival and rescue of their standard of living. The photographer is asked many times to face facts, risking limb in favor of publication.
