Name: _______________________________________ Grade:__________ Date:______________ Total score:________ Mark:_______ Reading __________________________? Even though we have entered the 21st century, more than billion people live in extreme poverty. 40 million people are infected with AIDS. 104 million children do not have access to school and 860 million adults cannot read or write. Millions of people are unemployed or working in dangerous jobs and, consequently, do not have a secure income to sustain their families. Hunger is daily reality for many. In parts of the world, the death of mothers at childbirth and infant children is still routine. 1.4 billion people don’t have access to potable water. Theses alarming facts caused a group of civil society actors to meet in Johannesburg in September 2004. There they launched the Global Call to Action against Poverty alliance. The GCAP targeted 2005 as the year when the governments could take actions to deliver on their promises from the Millennium and make poverty history. As a result, a number of Make Poverty History campaigns were launched in various countries, starting in the UK. The aim of these has been to increase awareness and pressure governments into taking actions and relieving absolute poverty. They have achieved this through educational programmes, and by organizing protest and music events, namely they Live 8 and Make Poverty History concerts. The symbol of the Make Poverty campaigns has been a white band name of cotton or silicon worn as a necklace or bracelet to show awareness. The three main demands of these campaigns are: 1. Trade Justice, meaning that powerful governments trade fairly with poorer countries; 2. Debt Elimination, namely that rich developed countries cancel all debt of poor developing countries; 3. More and Better aid, meaning that wealthy countries give more and the appropriate form of assistance to poor countries. The Make Poverty History campaigns are continuing the fight to reduce world poverty today and have been supported by many famous actors, singers and rock bands. However, all of us can contribute to this cause. We can write e-mails or letters to our politicians asking them to address this issue. We can volunteer our time, hand out brochures and ask people to sign a petition demanding that world poverty comes to an end. Is it not time for all of us to take a stand? I.
