VERTICAL TECH CAMPUS Designers | Jose Avila + Tola Thomas
Located in the heart of the San Francisco transbay terminal The Media Tower transforms the conventianal planar tech campus into one that is vertical in an area that would be otherwise unusable for a large tech company to operate. Through observations of tech companies that provide their workers with entertaining and creative workspaces within an large open camous, we experimented with the idea of bringing that same open feel to an ultradense site. By providing generous common space suspended over the urban fabric of San Francisco we created a space where tech producers and their consumers/ audience can meet in a collaborative and engaging corporate - public space.

EMERGING LANDSCAPE Designer | Jose Avila
The Leap Of Faith Ranch located in the foothills of Mt. Diablo provides a serine environment for Leaps & Bounds, a physical therapy program for children with physical disabilities, to conduct their therapy with children by interacting with horses. The concept of the project was to create a series of ribbon volumes that emerge from the ground as reateaning walls that transform into volumesw to accomodate doctors and patients then conclude by returning to the ground.

WATERLEVEL RESEARCH Designer | Jose Avila
The idea of the Sanfrancisco Waterlevel research center was to create a facility that both accomodated scientists and the general publoc in awareness of changing tides. The project features a submersable park that slopes gradually into the bay; prociding a public park environment that is constantly changed by the fluxuating tide. The buildings themselves ware submerged into the ground as a symbolic gesture of being submerged. The research lab’s form was inspired by a Sea Mussel shell; a coastal shellfish that lives in environments constantly undergong tadal shifts. The Shell form allows a large open atrium space for labwork to be done while private offices and desk sorround the perimiter.

Octavia boulevard is located in the hayes valley district of San Francisco California. The neighborhood once blighted by the old freeway now thrives in the hollow valley where is once stood. This void now hosts a series of parks and social spaces for the families of the area and its daily visitors. Octavia Park provides a social gathering space for people and events in a landscape structure reminiscent of the old freeway. The paths on the ground dramatically overlap and turn vertical as if to guide the user upwords to wards the skyline, creating a metaphoric link between the smallscale of the park and the metropolis looming above.

SPATIAL CONTINUITY Designers | Chris Lee, Architect LEED Jose Avila + Kin Lam + Ayano Sakaida + Eric Lin Located in Sanya Bay, a beautiful destination on the hainan island south of the peoples republic of China. Our team was given the task of redesigning phase II of this project due to the clients desire for cheaper design and higher density. With the client’s ambitious plan of 2.2 FAR and 4,660 dwelling units; our challenge in this vacation home residential project was to reduce the environmental impact and keep the resort feeling of the community. My design team also wanted to emphasize the site’s urban design significance by promoting a retail/ mixed-use element along the main street that is lined by numerous large hotels.

WENCHANG COMMUNITY GATEWAY Designer | Jose Avila The lush green landscape surrounding the development inspired me to design a series of sculptural forms that would be scattered along the Diamond Boulevard running through the development. The form initially generated resembled that of a lillie or large flower thus adressing the foliage they would rest among. Grasshopper was then used to generate a latticework in the shape of the previously formed lillie and provide a surface for other plants to grow on. The overall design creates a unique otherworldly feel when entering the site without overpowering the natural beauty of the Wenchang region.

As the visitor aproaches the Wenchang Development the lillies begin to emerge from the dense foliage of the boulevard’s garden
The alien forms of the lillies a perfect transition from the so contemporary architecture pl
and the landscape create the oft landscape to the striking lanned for the region
Once again, as the visitor procedes on into the development, the lillies recede back into the gardens and the visitor is left with only the striking view of the Wenchang skyline.

The project consisted of threebuilding types; two of which I played a major role in the design of the elevations. BLDG_X & BLDG_Y Construction Photo

The project site is located in the City of Wenchang within Hainan Province in P.R.China, as one of the two gateways to the proposed Tonggu Mountain Eco-Community Development. At the intersection of two major boulevards in this new district, this site is envisioned as one of the most important regional landmarks in this area. It has a significant impact on the overall image and identity of this district. The site is adjacent to the south slope of Tonggu Mountain. Existing topographic conditions are very complicated and some of the areas within the site present an elevation drop over 30m. The proposal took inspiration from creative grading design, which adapts to hillside slopes and divide the community into three clusters; ocean view cluster, creek valley cluster, and meadow plain cluster. Such site plan strategies has taken full advantages of surrounding natural landscape resources while being very sensitive on cut and fill balance as well as water and land preservation. Built around the existing valley creek on site, the central water features form a natural cascading feature across three levels of water planes until they enter the central lake at the lowest level, which became the focal point of landscape features and community activities. In the meantime, this cascading water way opens up a view corridor to connect the mountain at backdrop and to extend hillside landscape into the heart of the development. Overall architectural design style features the juxtaposition of crisp frame lines and transparent glass walls to achieve a delicate balance between contemporary design languages and the relaxing spirit of beachfront resorts

MOUNTAIN VIEW HOUSING Designers | Jose Avila + Chek Tang, NCARB When Chek Tang was given the challenge to design a high density residential development near the the proposed Google campus by BIG, the project was passed down to me to design one of three schemes to present to our client. Conceptually this project was designed to create emphasis on the proposed park which sits on top of the Hetch Hetchy underground river. in order to create a more attractive urban point of attraction, the building was lifted up at the corners to create a plaza covered by a giant glowing prism. this design move creates a beacon down San Antonio Road to attract people to the retail space along the ground floor and across the street, The prism on the corner also gives these high value units a literal Mountain View.

The 30 Story residential highrise is positioned on the corner of the site in order to space itself evenly amongst its neighboring towers, provide breathtaking views of the lake and sorrounding city, as well as allow maximum daylight to enter the adjacent historic roof garden shared by the public and the residents of the Kaiser Center.
