Name: Bootleg Kev Most notable residency: Fridays at Jackrabbit

Favorite Type of Music to Spin: Hip-Hop

More about yourself: I guess the most exciting thing that has happened to me recently was being named one of the Source Magazine’s Power 30. It’s a yearly list of the 30 most influential people in HipHop in the world. On top of that, I’ve been tapped to do some radio stuff with Shade 45 and

Name: Ramses Ja Most notable residency: KTVK-3TV Fridays at 10a

Favorite type of music to spin: Country/Western

More about yourself: Well, in addition to my TV show, I’m on the radio on 101.1 FM The Beat on weekday afternoons from 3-7pm. I am also the station’s music director, so that usually takes up a lot of my focus. I’m happy to say that we all collectively won the 2013 New Times award for Best HipHop/R&B radio station, so we are still on that high. Also I got

involved with a charity organization called Hashtag Lunchbag where I get with a bunch of volunteers at Sky Lounge in Downtown Phoenix on the last Sunday of every month. We prepare and distribute meals to homeless people and we party at the same time…I take turns with Q. Ward on the turntables and we make sure the event is a success every time. Speaking of Q. Ward, he and I are both deeply involved with the administrative side of Armadale Vodka, so that takes a good amount of focus as well…but it has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. What’s next for you: Let’s see…I’m spinning a lot of launch parties for Armadale Vodka, so be on the lookout for those. Oh, and one shameless plug…I recently became part owner of a company that manufacturers cell phone security devices…check it out at www.rappitup.net shawty!

Skee. TV. I’m still pretty active in Las Vegas as well, and I get booked to spin sets on the strip a couple times a month. Also I just dropped my first mixtape called Empire Business full of all original music and verses from all of my favorite national rappers. It can be downloaded from www.bootlegkev.com What’s next for you: I have a show I do called R.E.D.Y. Set Radio that I want to get nationally syndicated. I’ve also been talking to Diddy’s network Revolt TV too, but it would take a lot to actually pull it off… but I’m hopeful. I’ve been working with a lot of national artists and companies to bring the attention to Phoenix that it deserves.

For more information on Bootleg Kev, check twitter.com/BootlegKev or @BootlegKev on Instagram Talking Stick for a while now, but I can still be spotted around Old Town from time to time.

Name: Theresa Franco Most notable residency: Talking Stick Resort Fridays and Saturdays

Favorite type of music to Spin: EDM/ Open Format

What’s next for you: I’m in talks with a couple of companies for endorsements, and I’m hoping to get some bookings in Hollywood and Las Vegas in 2014. Other than that, I’m

progressing just fine. For more information on Theresa Franco, check twitter.com/ DJTheresaFrancoor @ DJTheresaFranco on Instagram

More about yourself: I originally got into the Scottsdale nightlife scene as a bartender. That was about 12 years ago. I spent the past couple of years as the General Assistant Manager of The Mint in Old Town and that gave me the chance to see some really good national and international DJs. I got the bug to get behind the turntables, started honing my skills, and things started taking off for me. I ended up getting an agent based out of Las Vegas to handle my bookings, so this has really been a dream come true. I have been working with Casino AZ and Radikal Fashion and Entertainment Magazine

If you’re the type to turn on the radio from time to time, you’ve undoubtedly heard the man with the golden voice come through your speakers. His career in the valley spans nearly a decade and the impact that he has made in that time is nothing short of amazing! Of course, we’re speaking of the one and only Tio Gio! Recently Radikal sat down with Tio Gio to find out what makes his career, ego, and most importantly, his ARMS larger than life!

So tell us a little bit about what you do? I talk on the radio (laughter)! No! Honestly, I am a radio host for Power 98.3. I’m on weekdays midnight-6am and my show is called Gio All Night. I’m also a nightclub host for a lot of clubs in the city. I’m a rapper, an actor, a model…essentially I’m a person who believes that you don’t need to be bound by just one thing!

That sounds like a lot to be proud of! I’m sure there are a lot of people who would want to know how you got started in your career… Yes. There are (laughter)! In all seriousness, I tarted off as an intern as far as radio is concerned, but I’ve been involved in music and acting since I was in grade school. I’ve always felt that the performing arts -whether music or acting - is a way to connect with people and engage them at the same time! Having a strong foundation in entertainment meant that I always kept an eye out

for entertainment industry opportunities. When one came along from Power 92.3 [currently Power 98.3] I jumped at the chance to entertain people professionally. Radio is the theater of the mind, except instead of actors, we use only our words and voices to tell a story. This is a skill that has taken time to develop, but I think I’ve hit my stride!

Well tell us about what it’s like to be a nightclub host! Being a nightclub host is one thing…fun! People go to the club to have fun and you have to embody that…and if some people are shy, your job as a host is to help them loosen up! It can be wild, but it’s always a good time! Me personally…I think that as a host, my job is to engage the crowd. Whether it’s dancing with the ladies…or taking shots with the fellas…I do whatever it takes to keep that fire stoked. Also with radio, acting, modeling or hosting, image is everything! I always make sure that I am approachable, and that a club promoter or radio station or whatever can market me. There needs to be that appeal in order for people to come out or partake in your brand.

Yeah, you look pretty fit. Exactly how important is that to a radio personality, since people primarily hear your voice? Extremely important! I’m in the gym 4-5 days a week, and sometimes I do cardio in the morning! I eat a high protein diet and I watch my carbs all

Radikal Fashion and Entertainment Magazine

because no matter what business you’re in, your body is the most important business you have! Radio is a lot more visual than people think! Imagine being on stage with 8000-plus people looking at you! I think that a lot of people are lazy…in radio and in regular jobs as well. They don’t maximize their full potential. I’m always aiming to better myself and better my brand! People are always judging the guy on the mic… whether we like it or not. Even on casting calls, it’s the same thing. And yes, despite what people may believe…the more appealing you look, the greater chance of expanding your audience! So, If that means being at the gym at 3 in the morning, so be it! For me, having visual appeal is a huge part of my success!

You could easily become the next Vin Diesel, or The Rock at this pace! Who are some of your inspirations? Those are two prime examples for me! First of all, they are both multiracial, and I am too. I am Black and Latino, and It’s always important to know where you come from and to represent that correctly, in order to know where you’re headed. But really, one of my biggest inspirations is Arnold Schwarznegger….he didn’t speak English…had a horrible accent…and he became one of the world’s biggest stars. If he had all of those odds stacked against him and he was able to overcome them, then why can’t you? The only one who stand in your way is you! But honestly, I’m not trying to be any of those guys…I just want to be the best Gio I can be.
