COMPETITIONS

„Before we can feel the new spirit which must envelop the days to come we must prepare ourselves to use intelligently the knowledge derived from all sources. Nostalgic yearning for the ways of the past will find but few ineffectual supporters.“ LOUIS KAHN (Louis I Kahn, :) „L’important dans la vie ce n’est point le triomphe, mais le combat, l’essentiel ce n’est pas d’avoir vaincu mais de s’être bien battu.“ Pierre de Coubertin Even thought victory is nice especially if the battle field is peaceful field of ideas and knowledge, we obtain new experience, knowledge and frequently new friendships with people participating on the competition. I have never regretted when I didn‘t win. New knowledge obtained during the work on a project will help next time to be better and build up buildings with higher qualities.

SERLACHIUS MUSEUM Finland/Mänttä

The Gösta Serlachius art collection is one of the biggest museums in the Nordic countries; and it contains one of the most significant private collections of Finland. The Gösta Serlachius Fine Arts Foundation organised an open international competition for the design of an extension of their museum, the Joenniemi Manor. The extension was supposed to include new services for exhibitions; collections; conferences; offices as well as a restaurant with auxiliary spaces. A new main foyer and ticket sales facilities were also included in the new project. In total, the net floor area of the extension was about , m. The extension of the Museum was supposed to be compatible with its unique natural environment and it was also expected that it would keep a certain balance between the functional and technical characteristics of the existing building. In addition, the design should adhere to the principles of sustainable architecture. Therefore, the development of a good proposal was a sort of dare for me and the team of architects with whom I worked with. In order to connect the new building with the beautiful surrounding park, we decided to build up the new edifice in between an existing island and the mainland. Thus the building would replace a historical, but destroyed bridge that has previously connected the mainland with the isle. Our proposal allowed the practising of winter sports and the visitors could walk around the structure of the museum.

SERLACHIUS MUSEUM Location of Extension Gösta Serlachius Fine arts Foundation is result of studies of the territory, current buildings placed on that and all related historical , environmental and cultural significances. Solitary position of Taavetinsaari in the landscape, its distance from shore of mainland, good visual relation to manor, its surroundings and parking plus advantageous connection to original ways and new ones as well make the island Taavetinsaari suitable position to place new museum building. Final position is based on mergence architectural, functional and landscape aspects. Idea of usage of the new building like a bridge, usage water surface with part of island like landscape scenery of atrium in the new building and simple service connection to the each function of the museum required chosen location connecting island with the cape. Museum is next solitaire in net of current buildings of the cape. Thanks to the distance and connection to the original symmetrical plant-lined paths leading to manor is achieved harmonic coexistence Joenniemi manor, its surroundings and new museum. Architectural features are based on functional requirements of circulation motion of visitors in exhibition area. Also sizes of all functions including in the museum, lighting and harmony with the landscape influence the shape and architectural features of the building. Circulation motion is used like main concept of primary part of the museum. Infers circle form of outer coat. Requirements to lighting lead to creation of atrium. Its shape is formed by inserted functions which have different sizes. The different sizes generate curved shape of the atrium. Increasing height of the ring from entrance to its opposite side is based on different requirements of each function placed in the ring. The museum is arched from island to the mainland over the cove of the lake Melasjärvi. The building is carry by support plate with pillars. The shape of plate with pillars is designed according to the shape of liquid between two solid boards. Exterior facades are made by glass boards with increased reflective effect. The surrounding landscape is reflected in the exterior facades. Interior spaces are glassed-in to the atrium except the part of exhibition areas for paintings. Atrium includes a sculpture placed on the pillar of original bridge led from mainland to island. The pillar together with the sculpture is on axis manor – entrance – foyer – sculpture.

The manor is sited at a visually prominent location in very high quality landscape. All the intersting points are scattered in area. We respect the manor and keep it dominant. The new building is another interesting point in area which is linked with the manor by original tree alley. There is a sculpture on the pilot of old bridge as a virtual end of main axis.

FUNERAL HOUSE Roudnice/Czech republic

I decided to participate, collaborating with a team of architects, in a competition for the design of a funeral house. The project appealed to us since we should design a building figuratively neutral since it would be used by people belonging to different religions. However, the funeral house should contain a subtle symbolism strong enough to honour and commemorate the dead person. The space where the funeral house would be placed played an important role when we came to elaborate the design of the building. The area surrounding the building contributed to create the spiritual meaning that we pretended to associate with the funeral house. The access to the building includes a garden where people can spend some time in order to get calm, think and recall the dead person. The landscape architecture of the garden has been designed in order to reflect the feelings of desolation and mourning that the visitors experience at the funeral house. The building itself is divided into three areas. There is a low horizontal space where the preliminaries of the ceremony should take place. Other two conical spaces include the main foyer and the ceremony hall.

WORKS

„No architect can rebuild a cathedral of another epoch embodying the desires, the aspirations, the love and hate of the people whose heritage it became. Therefore the images w have before us of monumental structures of the past cannot live again with the same intensity and meaning. Their faithful duplication is unreconcible. But we dare not discard the lessons these buildings teach for they have the common characteristics of greatness upon which the buildings of our future must, in one sence or another, rely.“ LOUIS KAHN (Louis I Kahn, :) I consider that the responsibility of architects is to find a solution that combines the splendor of the past, the benefits of modern technology and the personal creativity and aspirations of the architect. As each proposal represents a sort of legacy for the future, we should insist on our attempts to find certain harmony between modern and ecological results without eliminating the functionality of the building. The coexistence of aesthetic values and the requirements of the users is fundamental to achieve a high-quality result. Thus, it is possible to state that modern technology and the “genius loci” are the answers for the design of the buildings of the future.

FAMILY HOUSE

reconstruction, extension

Brno/Czech republic

The original building is situated in the city of Brno at Horova Street. This part of the city is a calm neighbourhood with family houses and some gardens. The investor decided to reconstruct the original building by adding a new residential part. The shape of the parcel, its slant and orientation to the south were decisive aspects for the design of the new residential part. In my proposal, the new residential part is divided into few different levels according with the slant of the parcel. The fact that the narrow parcel in which the residential area should be built up is orientated to the south complicated the lighting of the rooms. Therefore, I decided to create a central hall and to connect the rooms with atriums that will allow the entry of the exterior light. To improve lighting in corridor and offer views to garden, the east facade is designed from parts – panels. These panels change their position in turns regarding to the corridor. Two different positions of panels allows to make vacancy between them. This allows to get in more light and offer views to garden. The structure of the house is made up of cast-in-situ concrete and some parts are proposed as tilt-up constructions.

FAMILY HOUSE

design

Znojmo/Czech republic

This house is situated in the city of Znojmo. The historical center of the city includes few valuable historical monuments. One of the most important landmarks of Znojmo is the rotunda of Saint Katerina. The designed house is not placed in the city center, but it is situated in the south part of the city next to a park. The investor has asked for the design of family house for four members including a private space in his plot of land. The creation of a private space was a big challenge since the parcel is surrounded by high blocks of flats. In order to provide the house with certain privacy, my proposal uses the entrance corridor to the kitchen and the garage as a sort of shield against the lack of privacy caused by the blocks of flats and the presence of a road next to the house. Those rooms destined to the whole family and visitors are placed at the ground floor adjacent to the entrance. At the end of the ground floor we can find the rooms for children and a bathroom. In the first floor there is a spacious bedroom with bathroom and a cloakroom. Next to the bedroom there is an enclosed terrace that keeps the privacy of the room and offers an exterior sheltered space.

urbanism, design

NEW RESIDENCE AREA Brno-Lisen/Czech republic

The investor decided to build up a new residential area in a part of Brno called Lisen. The new residential area was supposed to contain a series of comfortable family houses. However, the slant of the terrain complicated the design of the residential area. Besides, the area should include a series of different house types with different levels of comfort and price. The variations in the styles of the houses avoid the monotony of a residential area with an unique patter for all the buildings. The final proposal contains different kinds of houses with different designs and diverse prices. The most comfortable houses are situated on the north part of the land next to road in BLOCK II. These houses contain an atrium that can be adjusted according with the specifications of the investor. The houses at the south side in BLOCK I have a lower price since the residences are smaller. Nevertheless, these houses also include a small garden. Besides, a part of the roof is converted into a terrace. BLOCK III includes houses which have one floor made from wood. The specific slant land there causes the terraced lay-out of these houses. The new residential area includes a green park with trees and a playground.

SKYSCRAPER ASTANA

design

Astana/Kazakhstan

I participated on this project during my short term collaboration in atelier SHCA in London. This skyscraper is in Astana, capital city of Kazakhstan. I worked together with a group of architects and designers and our task was to provide other workgroup with visualizations, D models and animations. I also cooperated as a consultant of mass and space arrangement of all the implied functions. The retail is located at low level and arranged to provide primary and secondary routes through the development to help orientation while encouraging a unique sequence of spaces of differing scales. Winter Gardens on the roofs are heavily planted, providing break out spaces from the mid level lobbies and linking the retail areas. The design of the retail with primary and secondary circulation routes provides maximum flexibility for the letting strategy and allows units to be combined and subdivided to respond to market conditions. Each of the uses is accessed through dedicated private space. A „necklace“ lobby space at level will provide access to the towers for office and residential. This area will also link to the Wintergardens, and connect down to the retail bellow.

design

VISUALIZATION, GRAPHIC..... around the World

One of my hobbies is to work with D models, visualizations and animations. As I consider that every experience is good to develop our skills I decided to cooperate with a few ateliers in order to help them to develop their ideas and to improve my abilities. The collaboration I offered to the different studios involved the selection of materials and the development of new products. Thus, I collaborated on the elaboration of basic drafts for new projects, on the creation of the D model and on the making of photo-realistic images and physical models. My experience collaborating with different architecture studios was quite gratifying since people were satisfied after checking how I was able to represent their ideas in a clear, realistic and comprehensive way.

structural plans, technology

PROJECT DOCUMENTATION Czech Republic

In order to be able to give shape to a project according to his ideas, an architect requires to have a good knowledge of structural engineering, structural analysis, geology and chemistry among others. Not only because my design and graphic skills are appropriate, but also because I have studied four years of Civil Engineering at a specialized high school and I have graduated from the Brno University of Technology in Architecture and Urbanism, I consider I am able to offer to my customers a detailed project of a given building from the first sketches to each structural detail. Besides, my experience as a site engineer has helped me to understand the constructions in a more precise way and to be aware of the workflow involved in the construction of a building.

EDUCATION

„A man is always greater than his works because he can never trully express his aspirations. To express oneself in music or architecture, one must employ the measurable means of composition or design. The first line on paper is already a measure of what cannot be expressed fully. The first line on paper is less.“ LOUIS KAHN (Louis I Kahn, :) Since the moment in which I became immersed in the study of architecture I was concerned with the idea of finding a way of expressing the immeasurable and represent on paper the designs conceived in my mind. As the previous quotation by Kahn indicates, one of the main problems of the architect is to overcome the restrictions imposed by our technological limitations; architecture can only be represented by the measurable means of composition and design. However, I was determined to use my knowledge of civil engineering together with my creative imagination in order to establish a sort of communion between my works and society and to transcend the restrictions of design. After several experiences, I came to understand that in order to provide with meaning a certain proposal, the architect should take into account not only his personal aspirations, but also the idiosyncrasy of the place in which the proposal will be set. By considering the place, time and circumstances connected with each of the proposals one will be able to become near to perfection and to provide the next generations with a marvelous legacy.

OLD CITY BRNO

urbanism proposal

city Brno

Originally, the old part of the city of Brno was an industrial area. In the course of time, the industrial factories were removed and one of the most important squares - Mendel square - was adapted to serve as traffic junction of the public transport. The adjustments made in order to readapt its function caused considerable damages in the original “face and purpose of the square. The new function of the square restricted the potential uses of the public space since pedestrian uses were limited by the different bus and tram routes crossing the square. Cultural events and free time activities could not take place in a square whose main purpose was to serve as traffic junction. The new proposal solves the problem with public transport and offers a new urbanism master plan for the Mendel square. The solution for the transport junction is derived from the city plan of the old part of Brno. The current traffic solution uses one wide road crossing Mendel square for both directions. Consequently, the road takes the strain of a heavy volume of traffic. Conversely, the new proposal separates the different directions to individual roads on the west and east sides of the Mendel square. The new city is supposed to grow up in an area where there was a large factory. However, in the new proposal this area is destined to shops, offices, hotels and entertainment facilities. It is remarkable to highlight that the height regulation allows building up higher edifices in the new part of the city. The new proposal reduces the amount of traffic to a minimum. Thus, pedestrian areas are made primary and a public garden is included in order to give priority to leisure activities.

ORIGINAL STRUCTURE OF BLOCKS

MENDEL SQUARE

urbanism proposal

old city Brno

The new design of the Mendel square solves the problem with traffic and offers a new urbanism conception. The traffic flow of cars is reorganized in two individual roads situated at the east and west sides of the square. A tunnel placed at the west side of the square connects it (the square) with the upper part of the Uvoz Street. The public transport services are centralized in the south part of the square. Therefore, the north part of the square remains free for pedestrians and this makes possible the reorganization of the urbanism structure. The new urbanism structure allows the creation of three new squares surrounded by new buildings that insulate the square from the traffic noise of the nearby roads. Besides, two of these squares are also surrounded by some historical buildings that improve the aesthetics of the square.

KRIZOVA STREET

proposal of vacant lot

Mendel square

The complicated situation of the vacant lot at Krizova Street made from the design of the place a sort of challenge for the architect. On the one hand, the traffic of the street is quite heavy. On the other hand, the street is connected with a series of streets that make the reorganization of the urbanism a bit difficult. Besides, we should take into account the presence of private parcels and houses that could not be rearranged and the existence of an entrance to a private yard inside a block of flats. The changes made by my proposal are in accordance with the surrounding buildings. The project respects the proportions of the existing buildings, but for their construction modern materials and technology are used. The vacant lot was divided into four different parts in order to avoid the monotony of a single huge house and to respect the disposition of the adjacent buildings. Each of the four parts is appointed to fulfil a specific function in accordance with its position in relation to the Mendel Square. Thus, some office buildings and a hotel are placed next to the Mendel Square. Modern materials that fit with the function of the buildings are used. In opposition to these service buildings, I have design a number of blocks of flats that are situated in a distant position from the square. Traditional materials were used in order to decrease the price of these blocks of flats. Each of the blocks of flats includes a shop or a restaurant in the ground floor. They also provide a solution for the problem existing with the entrance to the yard. Inside the block there is designed a block of flats with better privacy. Glassed-in walls were designed in order to get in more sunlight. The ground floor is not used for flats, but it is a free open space. The next floors are supported by columns; this design allows us to use to use ground floor for leisure activities and it works as a shelter in case of rain. The garages are designed with a lift system and without long ramps

New urbanism propose adjusted Krizova street as a pedestrin zone. Only public transport is allowed there. The vacant lot was divided into four different parts in order to avoid the monotony of a single huge house and to respect the proportion of the adjacent buildings. The proportion used for the parts helps integrate new hi-tech facades into historical buildings. Each of the part includes specific function. A allocation of the functions is made according with profitability of the parts. The parts near to Mendel square contain a office building and hotel. A further parts contain blocks of flats. Facades were design according with the function of the building. Each function has different aesthetic and technological criteria. The office building and hotel have facade from modern materials and technologies suitable to their function. The blocks of flats use traditional, cheaper materials and technologies in order to be profitable.

FLORAL GARDEN Kromeriz

The gardens of Kromeriz are declared patrimony of the humanity by the UNESCO. The landscaped area is divided into two different parts: a baroque garden known as the Floral Garden and a large manor house garden used liked a landscape park during the th c. The North-eastern part of the Floral Garden was strongly damaged during the last century and the intention of this project is to find a solution to solve the deterioration of the garden. It is important to bear in mind that for the reconstruction of the gardens the architect should take into account a series of circumstances. First of all, the proposed changes should be in accordance with the character of the garden. Secondly, my intention was to create an area trough which the visitors could walk around the garden. This area would offer a series of facilities for the access to the garden. The proposal keeps the original geometrical subdivision of the Floral Garden. However, three sections have been divided into smaller parts also following a geometrical pattern. The borders between the three sections are linked with the axes of the Floral Garden. Each of the sections has a particular design in accordance with its specific function. Thus, the northern section offers a sort of gallery and floral exposition. The middle section is occupied by a restaurant placed at a higher level than the water tank. The restaurant is surrounded by a line of trees which would offer shadow during summer. The southern part contains several glasshouses. In the project the original wall bordering wall of the garden has been removed in order to open the garden to the city. Instead of the wall, I have decided to limit the garden from the street by creating a water area with two small bridges. The proposal also includes the reconstruction of the central head-office building. Besides, a new center for garden and landscape architecture is created. At the southwest part of the garden, new facilities buildings such as glasshouses and an aviary have been added. At this area of the garden a labyrinth has been created in order to increase the beauty of the natural landscape.
