Maggie, you have a multifaceted career as a host, reporter, and forecaster for KENS 5 NEWS. What initially drew you to the world of broadcasting?
To be a voice for the voiceless, tell stories that create a positive change, and to inspire women of all ages to break stigmas and chase their dreams. I look at being a journalist as getting a backstage pass at life.
Can you walk us through a typical day in your life balancing your roles in news reporting and forecasting?
My day starts out with a 2 AM alarm, then I immediately do my hair and makeup. Coffee and concealer are my best friends in the early morning hours. After work I play with my pomeranian, Pablo, and take a pilates class for a mindset refresher. There isn’t a ton of balance when working in local news, but when you’re passionate about what you do, the sacrifice is worth it.
What has been the most memorable or impactful story you’ve covered at KENS 5 NEWS?
I worked hand-in-hand with Governor Jay Inslee to pass the Richard L.Lenhart Act into a Washington state law. News is unpredictable, you never know what kind of day you’re walking into. Sometimes you’re telling a story of success, other days you’re telling a story of tragedy.. Both have the ability to make a strong impact on the community and spark change.
What are some of the biggest challenges you face as a news reporter and forecaster?
As a news reporter and forecaster I have the responsibility to give timely, accurate information to my community. Whether I’m having a good or bad day, the moment I step into the news station, my personal life is no longer my priority.
You’re also a certified Pilates instructor. How did you get started with Pilates, and what inspired you to teach?
I grew up a dancer and competitive cheerleader, so I’ve always valued movement. When you physically move your body you are also training your mind. When you train your mind to become strong, your body will follow. Fitness translates into every aspect of my life, and I love motivating others to make it a part of theirs. Our bodies are capable of incredible things.
How do you manage to balance your demanding career in news with your passion for Pilates?
If I’m not mentally and physically well, I’m not able to perform at my highest level. The term “look good, feel good” has always spoken to the way I like to live my life. In high school I would wear my favorite outfit and heels to take a test because I truly believed it would help me ace it!
How has being a Pilates instructor influenced your approach to health and fitness, especially in such a high-pressure job?
I make my health a priority. To me, fitness isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s about discipline and showing up for myself. When I’m taking a group pilates class or teaching, I’m actually able to quiet my mind - it’s where I find peace.
Let’s talk fashion! How would you describe your personal style?
All over the place! I find it so fun to express myself through my outfits, hair and makeup. I tend to gravitate towards outfits that make me feel classic, sexy, and elevated. It’s possible to make it happen even when you’re ballin’ on a budget.
You recently did a photoshoot with Guess photographer Mégane Claire. Can you tell us about that experience?
Magical. Mégane’s energy is magnetic. Not only is she drop dead gorgeous, but she has a peaceful energy about her that made me instantly feel safe. I was able to fully be myself with her, and I think the pictures speak to how free I was feeling in the moment.
What was it like working with Mégane Claire? Did she offer any unique insights or direction that stood out to you?
Mégane is such a phenomenal creative because she doesn’t put anyone in a box. She gave me space to express my personality. Small tweaks with my leg position or chin helped me learn throughout the shooting process. I have never worked with anyone like Mégane, I truly believe she’s one of the best in the industry.
Do you find any intersections between fashion and fitness in your life? How do you incorporate style into your fitness routines?
I always wear matching fitness sets. When I was a little girl I would always take my sweet time getting ready. My Dad used to tell me, “this isn’t a fashion show, hurry up.” Now that I’m older, I always joke with him and say that life indeed is a fashion show. Why shouldn’t it be? I think everyone deserves to feel their best!
Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations in the works that you’re particularly excited about?
Truly, I’m most excited to be featured in QP Magazine . It’s a pivotal moment for me because I want to break the stigma behind what a professional journalist should look like. I believe that you can feel and be sexy while being taken seriously in a professional career. Someone’s looks or self-confidence should never take away from their ability to do a stellar job in any work setting. Women can be both!
What advice would you give to someone aspiring to have a career in broadcasting or journalism?
Think deeply about what draws you to journalism. As a reporter you have a responsibility to serve people in your community. I truly believe that as a successful journalist you put others before yourself and lead with kindness. If you do those things, this career can be fulfilling in ways words can’t explain. Find your purpose and make it your life’s mission.
What are your long-term goals, both in your career and personal life? Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
My dream is to become a national talk show host. I plan to continue using my platform to advocate for people from all walks of life through my ‘Sober Living’ app and philanthropic efforts to create tangible resources for people struggling with addiction.
