8 Louise Street

Year: 2021

Project Type: Multi Residential Site: 8 Louise Street, Melbourne, VIC 3004

Involved Stage: Design Development

Located off the lush tree lined boulevard of St Kilda Road and around the corner from Albert Park, 8 Louise is conceived as billowing soft tower shaped by its local context.

The brick façade and art deco style of the adjoining heritage properties are the catalysts for the podium treatment, which is clad in red brick with soft corners punctuated by rectilinear voids. An arched portal frames the entry lobby, where brick spills down from the façade to pave the entry. The use of a singular material throughout the podium connects the ground floor landscape with the double height lobby, creating a continuous arrival experience celebrating the use of red brick. The projecting eaves of the tower fan out above the podium like the frame of a yacht hull, mimicking the curvaceous forms found at the local Albert Park sailing club. A seam splits the tower along the primary street frontages to convey a sense of fluidity, allowing the tower to appear like floating sails.

With gentle curves, brick and draping greenery, the design takes the neighbouring built forms and greenery and reinterprets them to create a timeless silhouette which celebrates the historical influences of its’ surrounding environment.

17 Cato Street

Year: 2022 Project Type: Office Site: 17 Cato Street, Hawthorn East, VIC 3123 Involved Stage: Town Planning & Visualisation

Located within the heart of Hawthorn East’s commercial zone the proposal aims to provide a new typology for the future of offices.

Understanding the pressures and rapid changes society has seen post-covid, the proposal acknowledges the necessity to provide flexibility and importance on healthy ecosystems- a place to collaborate, grow and learn.

Stemming from the historical roots of Hawthorns East’s strong ties to brick and clay, 17 Cato St reminisces and pays respect to the past in creating harmony between the natural landscape and the earthly tone qualities of the design proposal. The ground plane aims to soften the harsh interfaces of the typical urban developments and give back to the street scape blurring the edge condition of interior & exterior with lush vegetation and the permeable ‘street wall’ that functions for the public.

On the floors above office spaces are planned to provide large flexible spaces for tenants, with emphasis on well being for the users. The facade allows the building to breathe, allowing fresh air intake on a daily basis and access to landscaped terraces that capture the views to the CBD towards the west.

702-706 Station Street

Year: 2022 Project Type: Hotel Site: 702-706 Station Street, Box Hill, VIC Involved Stage: Design Development & Visualisation

Reflecting surrounding architectural typologies found within Box Hill and surrounding suburbs, the splayed and angled articulation of the facade is a warm, contemporary expression of the classic, minimalist gridded facade.

The proposed development incorporates generous public and private amenity. At the public interface, the ground floor of 702-708 Station Street is endowed with public amenity, including a wellness centre and cafe/ restaurant space for casual dining.

As the building height transcends, the amenity becomes more private, catering more exclusively to hotel guests. These amenities include a rooftop terrace as well as a formal restaurant and bar space upon the upper floors.

Re-Imagining The Big Store

Public/ cultural Tutor: Hans van Rijnberk Year: 2021

The Big Store of Maclellan & Company, designed by William Pit and opened in 1902, had a glorious past as it was one of the most important department stores in Melbourne in the early 20th century. The business closed in the 1960s and the building was abandoned for more than 60 years apart from a Coles supermarket on the ground floor. Despite being identified as “A1” historical significance building, the stories of The Big Store are unbeknownst to many people, and their understanding of the building is merely from the ‘historicity’ of the façade. Our current preservation approaches for historical building are to blame as they fail to preserve the intangible cultural heritage and people’s associative memories with places.

Therefore, this project explores the idea of experimental preservation and uses memory as the catalyst to alter public reception of building’s cultural meaning. By establishing an “unnatural interface” between the visitors and the building through shopping, as well as inviting visitors to be the collectors of their own cultural heritage, the obsolete department store will be reframed as culturally significant and will regain its life.

New Hamilton Gallery

Public/ cultural

Tutor: Simona Falvo and Dayne Trower Year: 2021

The township of Hamilton in south-western Victoria is the largest town in the Southern Grampians region.

With the rise of architecturally significant regional galleries, the Hamilton Gallery, along with the Southern Grampians Shire Council and various community stakeholders, is undertaking a master planning and scoping study for the New Hamilton Gallery (NHG) project.

By creating a destination cultural art precinct integrated with civic amenities, and through a creative response to place and landscape, this project investigates the role of architecture in acting as key anchor for the revitalisation of Hamilton and the surrounding region.
