Massimo Bottura is a chef that respect every ingredients and execute them in a different technique, giving each and every ingredient a unique use. Bottura also plate ingredients in contrasting ingredient and colours, creating art on the plate. An art workshop is introduced in the space to create a connection between art and food. Materials Massimo Bottura creates beautiful and colourful dishes. Therefore, material selection should not out shine Bottura’s dishes. ABOUT THE PROJ ECT
Jalan Besar (or “big road” in Malay) started as a track through a betel nut and fruit orchard opened by the Norris Brothers in the 1830s. In the 1880s and 1890s, the Municipality expanded the road and aptly named it Jalan Besar. The shophouses located in Jalan Besar is painted with many vibrant colours. The Art Deco style shophouses create an attractive and well-defined streetscape. Some of the shophouses are also completed with beautiful porcelain tiles. Jalan Besar is a conserved area. Therefore, the main roads of Jalan Besar are largely lined with two-storey shophouses. New developments such as hotels and shopping malls can be found surrounding Jalan Besar as well. Therefore, there’s a vast contrast between old and new buildings.
DESIGN CONCEPT
“bringing historical character of jalan besar into the space” “to luxuriate in blossoms”
Upon arrival, guests will be greeted by a corridor of vegetation structure, wrapped with planters and floral motifs to bring the sense of nature into the space. The layout of the room is divided into spaces catered for business meetings as well as a personal safe haven. Yet the spaces are meticulously connected with the accentuated framing view of city. Raw materials like concrete and timber to are used as general finishes to connect with the nature, together with a touch of warm and soft fabrics to complement the overall lavish ambience curated for business travellers.

4. LABORATORY OF IDEAS // 115 king george's avenue #01-02, 208561 //
ABOUT THE PROJ ECT
Refinery Cafe The site itself is easily accessible as it is located near Lavender station. Tourist and office workers can be found around the site due to the vast amount of backpackers hostel located nearby. There is an interesting contrast between old and new buildings located on the site and a mix distribution of business. Warehouses from the past still remain in the current days while new developments such as shopping malls are developing at the same time. The site is also located near design schools and offices, which is an opportunity to connect the site to the design industry.

5. EXPLORER’S LITTLE KA FEI DIAN // cuppage terrace //
CUPPAGE TERRACE
It is imperative for architects to respect conserved architecture and the historical context of the space. Although user behaviours have changed over the years, history and heritage should not be neglected as history is what shapes us today. History gives us a sense of intimacy within the space, it contains our memories, past and personal rhythms. Many have failed to realize the importance of history and neglect the traditional rituals. This project aims to harmonize modern behaviours into historical site and create an intimate balance between users and architecture.
