A producer is generally the person responsible for coordinating and supervision. They’ll help with the overall creation of a production, regardless of the format (film, television, etc.). Labeling everything a producer does in a single paragraph is next to impossible, as their job description covers many aspects of the production process. Line Producer The term line producer comes from the phrase ‘below the line.’ This means that line producers are responsible for everything below their rank within the production. This means that they help assist in everything, not monitoring those above them. Supervising Producer The supervising producer role is not always seen on set, as it offers protection through redundancy. As the name suggests, supervising producers supervise, well…the other producers. This is a good practice for films that have the budget for it. Associate Producer Sometimes called an assistant producer, the associate producer helps handle certain aspects of production. However, these aspects can be hard to define, as their assignments are primarily dependent on the producer to allocate. This means they may vary from project to project. Co-Producer Once again, the name helps indicate the responsibilities for this role. Co-producers share duties with other producers. Sometimes two (or more) will share the project evenly. Other times they will split the work according to skill sets and interests. Visual Effects Producer Not every film will have a visual effects producer, though it is becoming more common. Visual effects producers, also known as VFX producers, oversee the budget and scheduling side of any visual effects necessary for the production.
