Photosynthesis Chapter One
2
Nothing is left to the imagination anymore and I’m not sure we are all the better for it being so. If the industrial revolution made us a disposable society materially, then perhaps the Internet has made us a disposable one, mentally. For not only does it facilitate a lack of necessary thought; it simultaneously devalues that which is left out. With each word not spoken, our expressions lose value, as do the words that are omitted; and this world is all about value. You would also be inclined to think that this would lead to more confrontation, but we seem to be increasingly desensitized. The final frontier then, for confrontation and inspiration, must surely be art, and yet galleries are near empty. On second thought, it’s highly likely that I am just on a downward spiral of cynicism because I’m drinking. I tend to be more pessimistic than usual, and prone to rants, when I drink. Obviously there are endless positive aspects to this virtual age. As an example, it does save me walking all the way to the library only to find that the book I desire has already been borrowed. Anything related to literature always brings out the romantic in me. But in this modern world and in my current state, I’m not sure I can fully endorse the significance of the one, or true love, in the Romeo and Juliet sense of the term. I consider myself to be quite romantic, regardless. It’s not that I don’t believe in, or disagree with, the concept of love, it’s just that, whilst dedication and commitment do have merit, I can’t help but wonder that, if perhaps a few of us had spent less time chasing dead ends and ‘settling’, and more time focusing on our passions, we might already have a cure for cancer and certain countries, that shall remain nameless, might have slightly deflated populations.

ADAM MARTINAKIS
Words & Interview by Anthony Thomas
Emotion. A non-negotiable facet of being human, yet, one rarely communicated effectively in the work of artists exploring the human condition. Adam Martinakis does not belong to this majority. The Greek born artist has no fear of traversing the depths of the human psyche, rendering an emotional palette that spans from love, affection and empathy to despair, envy and anxiety into visually perceivable forms. These emotions are woven into the very core of the imagery, endowing his work with a powerful yet viewerspecific degree of connectivity. What becomes hard to believe is that all of this is achieved through the exclusive use of digital technology. Perhaps explaining why we, as digital citizens, are able to make such strong personal associations with the works? I had a conversation with Adam via Skype to gain some insight into his incredible practice. 4

SQUARED LAB V Squared Labs is not a company that you may be immediately familiar with but chances are you have unknowingly encountered their work at some point. Specialising in experiential visual design, V Squared have positioned themselves at the forefront of interactive media production. Using projection-mapping and similar techniques, vivid arrangements of lights and imagery are projected onto static sculptural forms in precise collaboration with music. The ensuing sensory assault distorts the spatial perception of viewers rendering the banal fabrics of reality null, instead inviting them into a space governed only by the parameters of their imagination. Naturally, the extreme degree of audience engagement and mind-altering qualities of the studio’s work has seen the entertainment industry develop an immense interest. Their clients

include major names like Skrillex, Amon Tobin, Drake, Infected Mushroom, Coachella and Ultra Music Festival, amongst others, as well as a growing list of commercial brands and venue installations. CEO and creative director, Vello Virkhaus, was in Australia for BIGSOUND last year and I caught up with him to chat about the game changing work he is helping bring to the live music game.
