Describe the project, architect, and organizational logic in 200 words.
Seeing multiple generations of development beginning in 1977, the Álvaro Siza’s Quinta da Malagueira development attempts to assess the failures of the 20th-century Portuguese housing market as well as the needs of the shantytown that once existed on the land; previously known as Bairro Santa María on unincorporated land on the outskirts of Évora. The development, consisting of 10 variations of 8m x 12m one and two-story homes with emphases on their connectedness to a patio area. In the 90s, new variations of units were constructed, which aimed to optimize circulation and were narrower, measuring 6m x 12m.
The development is divided into di erent sections created for housing cooperatives, public housing, and private homes. These di erent zones also saw a di erent level of attention to detail, with co-op neighborhoods featuring less green space, narrower streets, and higher walls; while their private counterparts saw the contrary. A defining feature of the project is its economic use of an aqueduct systemm which spans across the development, delivering water, electricity, telephone service, and TV service to homes. By elevating these services, Siza was able to greatly reduce costs as he would not be required to dig underground. However, the appearance of the aqueduct has remained a subject of discussion, as Siza chose to leave its concrete block-construction unfinished, which locals feel makes the community look “intentionally poor.”
