1 | NEW EDITIONS OF FRANCISCAN BOOKS THE ROAD TO ASSISI
The Essential Biography of St. Francis, 120th Anniversary Edition
Paul Sabatier
Edited with Introduction and Annotations by Jon M. Sweeney Originally published in French in 1894, Sabatier’s was the first modern biography of Francis of Assisi. It was a worldwide bestseller, and in 2003 when this new edition was first published, it again sold more than 60,000 copies and was a selection of History Book Club. This new 120th anniversary edition includes a dozen additional annotations and a new preface by the editor, putting Sabatier’s influential work into its historical context, showing why it is still the most essential life of the saint. Paul Sabatier (1858–1928) was educated in Paris and served as a pastor in Strasbourg. In mid-life, he dedicated himself to research and writing about Francis. His pioneering work has influenced the work of generations of scholars and biographers since his time.

LENTEN READING | 2 O TASTE AND SEE
A Biblical Reflection on Experiencing God
Bonnie Thurston If you have always been troubled by the image of God as a punitive judge, this book will show you why this view is so mistaken. Psalm 34:8’s “O taste and see how good the Lord is” contains in miniature the whole process of coming to and growing in faith. It gives us insight into God and into how we experience God. We come to know this good and gracious God by means of the body: seeing (a metaphor for understanding) and tasting (shorthand for what the body knows). In fact, it is precisely engrafted hunger that turns us God-ward—only to find God waiting on the road for our return and ready to host a feast for us. “If you think you might be hungry for God, but haven’t experienced God directly, or if you are a believer who still feels malnourished, I hope this little book might be for you a kind of manna. Taste. See.” —from the Introduction Bonnie Thurston is a former seminary professor, a poet, and solitary living in the West Virginia mountains. She leads retreats throughout the world.

This creative form of prayer has been around for a long time, and is often credited, especially today, to Pope Francis when he was the Archbishop of Argentina. Regardless of its origins, it’s a powerful way to teach our children to pray that the Holy Father has often utilized in his ministry.
A True Story
This joint biography illuminates the lives of Francis and Clare and their way of life. It shows how they were bound together by devotion to God as well as the violent objections of their families to religious life. It explores a variety of issues they faced, including the treatment of lepers in medieval society, corruption in the church, and attitudes toward the created world. You will learn how Clare’s spirituality influenced that of other prominent women, how Francis lost control of his own movement, and why Francis’s body was secretly buried after his death. This title was previously published as Light in the Dark Ages. Jon M. Sweeney is the author and editor of many books including The Road to Assisi, The St. Francis Prayer Book, Francis of Assisi in His Own Words, and The Pope Who Quit, a medieval history that was recently optioned by HBO. He lives in Ann Arbor, MI.

A Fresh Look at the Sacrament of Reconciliation
CONFESSION
op
Ideal for Catholics
Finding Freedom and Forgiveness
Fr. Paul Farren
Foreword by Jean Vanier The sacrament of Confession is probably the most talked about sacrament in the Catholic Church, as well as a spiritual practice being revived in many Protestant churches. This book explores the sacrament, focusing on the two who confess—God and the penitent. God is the primary confessor when he confesses his forgiveness for and trust in the one who is celebrating the sacrament. The gift of freedom, the existence of hell, and the role of conscience are discussed at length. Jean Vanier in his foreword says: “Somewhere, along the line, in the history of the Church, people have become more centered upon obedience to laws than upon this relationship with love with a person, with Jesus. This book flows from an understanding of Confession as a meeting of love and as a renewal of friendship.” How that friendship is renewed is explored using the Rite of Penance and St. Peter in the Gospel. This helps us understand what happens in the sacrament and how we can celebrate it. Ultimately, Fr. Paul describes reconciliation as God’s gift to us to express both God’s humble forgiveness and his confidence in us and also the place where we take responsibility for our lives. Fr. Paul Farren, a native of Ireland, was ordained a priest in 1997. He studied at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, and The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. He is currently Administrator of St. Eugene’s Cathedral and Long Tower Church, Templemore Parish, as well as Diocesan Advisor in Post Primary Education, and Director of their Catechetical Centre.

GREG MILLER
THE SEA SLEEPS New & Selected Poems
“This poet takes other people’s lives as seriously as he takes his own, and so, under his patient, unwavering, sympathetic gaze, they come to life in the poems, in all their perplexity and distress, courage and dignity, fully realized in a fully realized landscape.” —David Ferry, winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for poetry for Bewilderment “In Greg Miller’s poems, the natural world sometimes seems to almost meld with human love, fear, and longing.” —Clyde Edgerton This collection draws heavily from the core devotional strain in Miller’s poetry, offering what novelist Fenton Johnson described in his review of Iron Wheel as “the vision and experience of that place where dark merges seamlessly into light; the house and home of grace—unasked for and perhaps undeserved, but transformative all the same.” Framed by meditations on the beginnings and possible post-human ends of culture, the new poems reflect on the callings and limits of art in responding to desire, history, mortality, and injustice. Set in the American South, Wales, France, the Czech Republic, and Sudan, the poems address and invoke the divine.

IDIOT PSALMS new poems
A new collection from one of our favorite poets. Fourteen “Idiot Psalms,” surrounded by dozens of other poems, make this his most challenging collection yet. “Idiot Psalm 1” O God Belovéd if obliquely so, dimly apprehended in the midst of this, the fraught obscuring fog of my insufficiently capacious ken, Ostensible Lover of our kind—while apparently aloof—allow that I might glimpse once more Your shadow in the land, avail for me, a second time, the sense of dire Presence in the pulsing hollow near the heart. Once more, O Lord, from Your Enormity incline your Face to shine upon Your servant, shy of immolation, if You will.

According to Father Alexander Men (1935–1990), the Russian Orthodox priest and popular spiritual teacher who was publicly martyred in 1990 in the former USSR, prayer is “the flight of the heart toward God.” This work, available for the first time in English, is a collection of his writings, lectures, and sermons on prayer. You will discover both ancient and modern wisdom, and you will see how one Eastern Orthodox priest taught his parishioners to pray. April French, the project editor, is one of the foremost North American authorities on Father Alexander Men. She worked for several years in Christian ministry to university students living in Irkutsk, Siberia, where Russian friends introduced her to the works of Fr. Alexander. April has an MA from Regent College, where she wrote her thesis on Fr. Alexander. She is now a PhD Candidate at Brandeis University. Christa Belyaeva, the translator, lived in Moscow for eight years. While there, she converted to Orthodoxy and worshiped at the Church of the Dormition with people who knew Fr. Alexander Men personally. Christa has experience translating at Moscow Bible College and Hosanna Ministries. She now lives with her husband and three children in Temecula, CA.

LENTEN SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR KIDS I'm Supposed to Do What?!
Peter Celano Written for 7–11 year olds, this playful guide appeals to kids who want to know more about what adults are telling them is a serious time. Without talking down to them, yet challenging them to learn and do more, the following topics are explored in detail: What Lent Is, What Lent Definitely Is Not, 40 Days of Survival Tactics, and A Few Prayers and Practices—Only for Kids. From What Lent Definitely Is Not: People easily become confused on this subject. In fact, we’re glad you are reading this book, because we want to set you, at least, straight. You can then please set others straight.
400 pages, 6 ½ x 7, Illus. hardcover $20.95, December 2013 (available now) ISBN: 978-1-61261-467-0
Lent is not about “giving up” silly things. It is not about making sad faces to show how difficult life has suddenly become for you. (Need we start explaining how most of the world would think that giving up candy bars or soda for 40 days sounds just plain silly? According to Bread for the World, 925 million people around the world go hungry each day. So please don’t talk about the terrible hardship you are undergoing by giving up M&M’s and Coca-Cola for a few weeks.)

So instead of focusing on what you may give up, take time to consider why you may do it. You give stuff up for Lent because you want to become a better Christian. You are testing yourself—and allowing God to test you—to see if, by giving up something that maybe you are too focused on in everyday life, you can concentrate more on him. creator of Saint Francis and Brother Duck
This playful book illustrates—in vivid color and storytelling—the life of St. Nicholas of Myra from his beginnings as a young priest in Asia Minor in the late 3rd century until just before his death. Kids will watch as he learns and practices the generosity that led to him becoming the father of Christmas giving (“St. Nick”). As with Saint Francis and Brother Duck, Jay Stoeckl’s first foray into this genre, one fictional character is added to the mix through whom the wisdom and Christian teachings of Nicholas’s life can be revealed through dialogue: a Greek-attired philosopher-mouse by the name of Cicero. He questions many of Nicholas’s actions, often hilariously, until the mouse himself converts to Christianity late in the story. The result is an excellent introduction to the life of one of the least-understood and appreciated real characters in Christian history.

monastic spirituality seeking a more life today
teachers of Benedictine spirituality shares the burdens of his heart for Christians everywhere.
“[Casey] knows what Benedict is trying to say. And he knows how to apply it to the modern world.” —Terrence Kardong, osb, author of Benedict’s Rule: A Translation and Commentary
£ One of the world’s experts on monastic spirituality, Michael Casey reflects on what it means to live today in the distinctive path of St. Benedict of Nursia. Eloquent and incisive, Casey invites us to embrace the challenge of gospel living, which is opposed to the dominant, secular culture around us. The values of asceticism, silence, leisure, reading, chastity, and poverty are each posed as ancient beliefs in a vibrant, contemporary context. Strangers to the City is for all who are interested in deepening their faith through the dynamics of the monastic experience. Michael Casey, ocso, is a Cistercian monk of Tarrawarra Abbey in Australia. A frequent retreat master and lecturer on monastic spirituality all over the world, he is the author of many other books including The Road to Eternal Life and Toward God: The Ancient Wisdom of Western Prayer.

St. Thérèse's autobiography was first published soon after her death in 1897 at the age of 24. Combining charming descriptions of family and community life with a sense of humor and intense devotion to God, her writing was an instant bestseller. But later editions often excluded passages, and refined her use of the French dialect often spoken by peasants. This remarkable new translation includes every word of the original text, retaining the complete charm of the original. The result is a complete and unabridged work, longer than most other editions available today. Millions of hearts have been touched by St. Thérèse of Lisieux's desire, not to be mighty and great, but to be a humble, little flower that would gladden God's eyes as He glances down at His feet. Now, yours will be, too.
“She covers so much ground in such a little book that the reader could devour it quickly in hours or spend weeks reading it slowly, savoring each bit of wisdom. People suffering from loss will especially appreciate the counterpoint she provides to all the well-meaning but insensitive ‘churchy’ things Christians tend to say to people who are grieving (‘it’s God’s will,’ or ‘it’s all for the best’). But more importantly, McCormack includes a chapter of ‘Guidelines for Spirit Guardians,’ offering advice to those who accompany grieving people so they can be fully present and helpful. Anyone who is grieving or anyone who knows a grieving person will find hope and support in this small book.” —Publishers Weekly starred review
