HEALTH
Living the ‘Festivees’ tyle Healthy Lif In the advanced world or western society people tend to care more about the kind of food or products they consume, unlike in the third world society that poverty, ignorance and other factors makes people consume every variety of food or diet that comes their way. However this article has come to educate us about a healthy lifestyle that we need to adopt regardless of our societal differences if we really desire good health. An
insight on the term VEGETARIANISM I believe will make us adopt a healthy lifestyle that we deserve as humans and that is all this article once again explains.
An insight on the term VEGETARIANISM I believe will make us adopt a healthy lifestyle that we deserve as humans and that is all this article once again explains. I will like to briefly explain the term “VEGETARIAN” as people who do not eat meat, poultry or seafood. But people with many different dietary patterns call themselves vegetarians including the following;
IFEANYI UKEJE
Windsor University School Of Medicine, West Indies
THE VEGETARIAN / VEGAN DIET
VEGANS: these are absolute vegetarians because they do not eat meat, poultry, fish, or any products derived from animals including eggs, diary products (butter, cheese, milk, frozen desserts etc) and gelatin. LACTO-OVO VEGETARIANS: This includes people who do not eat meat, poultry or fish, but do eat eggs and diary products. LACTO VEGETARIANS: These include those who eat no meat, poultry, fish or eggs, but do consume diary products.
PARTIAL VEGETARIANS: They avoid meat but may eat fish (Pesco-vegetarian or pescatarian) or poultry (Pollovegetarian). In various societies there are qualified reasons why people become vegetarians or live the vegan lifestyle and this could be religious as seen in the Hindu religion which considers the cow sacred, consequently making most of its followers to avoid eating meat, other reasons could be related to health, ethical, economical, and family and friends. It is amazing to know that notable scientists like ALBERT EINSTEIN, PLATO, PYTHAGORAS and SYLVESTER GRAHAM were all vegetarians.
OVO VEGETARIANS: They eat no meat, poultry, fish or diary products, but do eat eggs. FESTIVAL MAGAZINE ISSUE 001

When you take a very close look at the images displayed you would see various vegetarian menu ranging from fresh fruits (apples, strawberries, tomatoes, carrot, onions, lettuces, bananas) fresh vegetables, whole grain bread, nuts, peanuts, soy foods, beans, peas, diary products. So I believe this settles every of your curiosity. I don’t think one need to be too rich to live the vegetarian or vegan lifestyle as we all know it will cost you more to afford meat and other animal products unlike vegetables, fruits and other related plant products. However only you can decide whether a vegetarian diet is right for you. I also understand being an African, it is almost impossible to forego meat or any product derived from animals (vegan lifestyle), but adopting a little of the vegetarian lifestyle would help our health a great deal. It is important to note that being a vegetarian does not guarantee absolute health or well being if the vegetarian or vegan does not abstain from other lifestyle that could lead to disease development such as alcohol and hard drug intake, smoking etc. All of the following nutritional benefits come from a vegan diet full of foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, beans and soy products.
Carbohydrate: This provides energy for your body, when this is deficient your body burns muscle tissue. Fiber: helps with healthier bowel movement. High fiber diets helps fight against colon cancer. Magnesium: Aids absorption of calcium.
Other benefits include;
Potassium: This balances water and acidity in your body and stimulates the kidneys to eliminate toxins. Diets high in potassium have shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Folate: This B vitamin helps with cell repair, generating red and white blood cells, and metabolizing amino acids. Vitamin C: (antioxidant) Asides boosting the immune system also helps keep your gums healthy and helps bruises or wounds heal faster. Vitamin E: Benefits the heart, skin, eyes, brain and may even help prevent Alzheimer's disease , A diet high in grains, nuts and dark leafy greens is full of Vitamin E. Phytochemicals; Plant based foods provide phytochemicals which helps to prevent and heal the body from cancer, boost protective enzymes and works with antioxidants in the body. Protein: Asides deriving this from red meat like most Americans do, the following constitutes great ways of getting the right amount of protein in a vegan diet. They are; beans, nuts, peas, lentils and soy products. Most vegetarian diets are full of antioxidants rich foods.
Antioxidants are molecules that can reduce the damage caused by oxidative stress including atherosclerosis( thickening of the inside walls of the arteries) A vegetarian diet is associated with a higher consumption of fiber, folic acid, vitamins C&E, magnesium, unsaturated fat, and countless phytochemicals (plant chemicals) such as carotenoids and flavonoids. This often results in vegetarians having lower cholesterol, being thinner, having lower blood pressure, and reduced risk of heart disease.
“
YOUR Less BMI (Body Mass HEALTH IS THE Index) Improvement GREATEST ASSET during psoriasis (a skin disease that causes skin YOU’VE GOT, SO redness and irritation, reduces incidence of diabetes, PLEASE DO NOT reduces risk of cataract development. Cataract is a TAKE IT FOR clouding of the lens in the eye that GRANTED affects vision, mostly related to aging,
stones, and finally satisfies all your nutritional requirements. According to the official position of the American Dietetic Association a comprehensive and well designed vegetarian or vegan diet can be nutritionally sound and appropriate for all ages and stages of life, including infants, the elderly and even athletes.
“
To add to this a vegetarian diet is associated with good health, reduced incidence of disease, and better management of existing health problems.
reduces risk of cardiovascular disease, low cholesterol, less risk of stroke and obesity, less chance of developing kidney In summary it is important to note that as young children, vegetarians may grow more gradually, reach puberty somewhat later, but live substantially longer than meat eaters do(longevity) therefore i would recommend the vegetarian diet to everyone reading this article because the vegetarian or vegan lifestyle is worthwhile. Remember your health is the greatest asset that you’ve got, so please do not take it for granted “HEALTH IS WEALTH”. Thank you all and see you again. FESTIVAL MAGAZINE ISSUE 001

RECIPES
Egusi Soup INGREDIENTS 500g Egusi (Melon) seeds 3 cooking spoons red palm oil Beef: best cut and Shaki (cow tripe) Fish: dry fish and stockfish 2 tablespoons ground crayfish Pepper and Salt (to taste) Vegetable: Nigerian pumpkin leaves or bitter leaf 3 small stock cubes 1 small ogiri okpei (optional) IMPORTANT TOOL Spice grinder for grinding egusi (melon) seeds: NOTES ON THE INGREDIENTS To be honest, I may have put 3 cooking spoons of palm oil up there but you will need more. You want the quantity of palm oil that will turn every grain of the ground egusi yellow. See video below. If the ground egusi is not well coated, it will burn during frying and the resulting Egusi Soup will be dry and have a burnt taste. If you are concerned about the quantity of palm oil you will used for this soup, it is best to prepare your egusi soups using the Caking Method. The best meat for Nigerian soups for swallows is red meat with beef being the most common. You can also use goat meat. I have seen some people cook Egusi Soup with chicken, that's fine but the elders will not like it. If you use chicken, please do not use dry fish and stockfish because those two cannot co-exist with chicken in the same Nigerian pot. ;)
If using bitter leaves, add it a bit earlier because it is a tough vegetable (see the cooking directions below). Remember that they need to be washed to remove all the bitterness unless your family prefers it with the bitter taste. Ogiri okpei is made with locust beans. It is known as iru in Yoruba. It adds a traditional taste to Egusi Soup. BEFORE YOU COOK EGUSI SOUP Before preparing the soup, soak the dry fish and stock fish till soft. If you are using the very tough stockfish, boil it for 20 minutes and leave in the pot with the hot water to soak for about an hour. If using the softer stockfish, you can just soak them in cool water till you can break them apart with your hands. When the fish and stockfish are soft, de-bone and break them into sizeable chunks. Much closer to your cooking time, grind the egusi with a dry mill. Grind the crayfish and the dry pepper separately and set aside. Rinse the vegetables to be used and cut into tiny pieces. Cook the beef and fish with the stock cubes till they are well done. You should start cooking the toughest meat and fish first and add the others as they get done. If using a normal pot, I will start with stockfish and shaki, add beef after about 1 hour and cook till done. I can add the dry fish when all the other meat and fish are cooked because it is already cooked, you just need to cook it long enough till it is soft and integrated with the rest of the ingredients. With a pressure pot, I do it differently but that is a process for another post. Set all these aside.

Cooking Directions Pour the red palm oil into a dry pot and set on the stove to heat. As soon as the oil melts, add the ground egusi and start frying. If the oil is not congealed, add the egusi as soon as the oil is translucent. Mix the ground egusi with oil till every grain of egusi turns yellow. Start stirring the egusi on low to medium heat. Keep stir-frying for about 10 minutes. Add the meat/fish stock (water from cooking the fish and meat) little by little while still stirring the egusi. So you add a bit of the stock, stir-fry for some time, add another, stir-fry and so on. When the stock is exhausted and you feel that the soup is still too thick, you can start adding hot water in the same way till you get the consistency you want. If your choice of vegetable is bitter leaf, add it at this time. Cover the pot and cook for 20 minutes, stirring at intervals.
Also, top up the water when necessary. If you don't stir it, it will burn. It takes 30 minutes to cook egusi properly else the soup will not taste nice to someone with authentic Nigerian taste buds. Also, egusi that is not cooked long enough may cause upset stomach. The egusi is done when you notice that the oil has separated from the mix. Once you are happy that it is done, add the ground crayfish and pepper. Stir and add the Nigerian pumpkin leaves or spinach (alternative). Stir very well and add the cooked stockfish, shaki and meat. Add salt if necessary. If it is too thick, add some water to bring it to a consistency you like. Cover and leave to simmer and it is done!

employment discrimination in many countries, and is a form of abuse (sexual and psychological) and bullying. For many businesses or organizations, preventing sexual harassment, and defending employees from sexual harassment charges, have become key goals of legal decision-making.
Sexual Harrasment types and forms
Sexual harassment is defined as unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature when either: As defined by the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), "It is unlawful to harass a person (an applicant or employee) because of that person's sex." Harassment can include "sexual harassment" or unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature. The legal definition of sexual harassment varies by jurisdiction. Sexual harassment is subject to a directive in the European Union. Where laws surrounding sexual harassment exist, they generally do not prohibit simple teasing, offhand comments, or minor isolated incidents — that is, they do not impose a "general civility code". In the workplace, harassment may be
be considered illegal when it is so frequent or severe that it creates a hostile or offensive work environment or when it results in an adverse employment decision (such as the victim being fired or demoted, or when the victim decides to quit the job). The legal and social understanding of sexual harassment, however, varies by culture. In the context of US employment, the harasser can be the victim's supervisor, a supervisor in another area, a co-worker, or someone who is not an employee of the employer, such as a client or customer, and harassers or victims can be of both genders. It includes a range of actions from mild transgressions to sexual abuse or sexual assault. Sexual harassment is a form of illegal employment discrimination in many countries, and is a form of
Situations Sexual harassment may occur in a variety of circumstances—in workplaces as varied as factories, school, academia, Hollywood and the music business. Often, but not always, the perpetrator is in a position of power or authority over the victim (due to differences in age, or social, political, educational or employment relationships) or expecting to receive such power or authority in form of promotion. Forms of harassment relationships include: ·The perpetrator can be anyone, such as a client, a co-worker, a parent or legal guardian, relative, a teacher or professor, a student, a friend, or a stranger. ·The victim does not have to be the person directly harassed but can be a witness of such behavior who finds the behavior offensive and is affected by it. ·The place of harassment occurrence may vary from school, university, workplace and other. ·There may or may not be other witnesses or attendances. ·The perpetrator may be completely unaware that his or her behavior is offensive or constitutes sexual harassment or may be completely unaware that his or her actions could be unlawful. ·The incident can take place in situations in which the harassed person may not be aware of or understand what is happening. ·The incident may be one time occurrence but more often it has a type of repetitiveness. ·Adverse effects on the target are common in the form of stress and social withdrawal, sleep and eating difficulties, overall health impairment, etc. ·The victim and perpetrator can be any gender. Prevention Sexual harassment and assault may be prevented by secondary school college, and workplace education programs. At least one program for fraternity men produced "sustained behavioral change".Many sororities and fraternities in the United States take preventative measures against hazing and hazing activities during the participants' pledging processes (which may often include sexual harassment). Many Greek organizations and universities nationwide have anti-hazing policies that explicitly recognize various acts and examples of hazing, and offer preventative measures for such situations.

HEALTH & FITNESS: LEAN WAIST
THERE is a very good reason to desire and have a trim midsection: your health. Fat or big waistline for both men and women put them at risk of certain life-threatening conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. The likelihood of this part of the body getting bigger increases with age, which is usually referred to as the 'middle-age spread.' But this need not be so, as individuals can prevent their waistline from developing out of control. This can be achieved with specific measures. These include smart eating, aerobic exercise, as well as abdomen-tightening moves, which are capable of keeping anyone out of the danger zone. These moves target the obliques on the sides of the torso. Two or three sessions a week, with a rest day between workouts, would guarantee a slimmer and fitter waist. You can try the following exercises for a leaner waist: Seated knee drop Keeping your spine straight, sit back on a chair with knees bent; the feet should be off the floor and the ankles touching. Place your hands behind you for balance. Contract your abdominal muscles and slowly lower your legs to the left until they are about 6 inches from the floor, keeping your ankles still pressed together and your shoulders forward.Your feet will roll, but they should stay on the floor. Hold for a second and then use your abdomen muscles to slowly pull your legs up and over to the right. Don't let your knees simply fall to the side; keep the move controlled. Repeat from side to side for one minute. Be careful not to twist your upper body, while undergoing the process. Side crunch Lie on your right side with your legs extended. Wrap your right forearm across
your waist and rest your right hand on the left side. Bring your left hand behind your head, so your left elbow points towards the ceiling. Using your obliques on your sides (not your right arm) pull in your abdominal muscles and lift your right shoulders off the floor about two to three inches, while raising your left leg about 12 inches. Hold for two seconds, and then slowly return to the starting position. Start with 5 to 8 repeats on each side and work up to 12 to 15. Do one or two sets with one minute of rest in between. Do not roll on your buttocks, while doing this session. For an easier version, do not lift your leg; only lift your upper body. Avoiding Injuries THE exerciser might sometimes get injured while working out. Different types of exercise affect the body differently. There are those with low impact and others with high impact. While all activities tend to affect the whole body, high-impact exercises affect the joints more than any other parts of the body, as they receive directly all the pounding in the course of exercise. For instance, there are some physical activities that require certain posture, carriage and tempo. And if these are not strictly adhered to, there could be problem. Again, the extent of the injury depends on how the exerciser is undertaking an activity. It is important to have knowledge of how to go about a particular exercise(s) so as not to sustain avoidable injuries.

good way to guard against injury while exercising. There are books that instruct an exerciser on how to go about some exercises. Attending classes where such practical workouts are done is another way. But the best bet is to employ the services of a professional gym instructor/trainer, who is capable of guiding in this regard. One is sure of getting the right thing here, provided the gym is standard or reputable. And this indeed is the reason some people prefer going to the gym for workouts, because not only are professional instructions available, t h e r i g h t gadgets are also installed. #Credit:The Guardian

Did u Know?

This “word” is a favourite of many Nigerians, but, sadly, it simply does not exist. You won't find it any reputable dictionary. The correct thing to say when “installmentally” comes to your mind is in instalments or by instalments.
2. PLUMPY Nigerians use “plumpy” when they want to say that someone is chubby or slightly fat. The correct expression is plump.
3. DISVIRGIN This particular “word” is used severally on a daily basis, especially by Nigerian men when they intend saying that a woman has lost her virginity to a guy. The correct word to use, however, is deflower, because “disvirgin” is not a word.
4. CROSS-CARPETING This is a favourite of Nigerian politicians and political analysts alike. They use it when they want to say that a politician
5. GO-SLOW
The word go-slow exists, but not in the way Nigerians use it. A “go-slow,” in the peculiarly Nigerian context, is a situation in which road traffic is very sluggish due to vehicle queues. However, go-slow in the English language actually means an industrial tactic used by employees whereby they intentionally reduce activity, productivity and efficiency in order to press home some demands. When this happens, you say that work in the office, factory or organization is at a go-slow.The correct terms to use when road traffic is very sluggish due to vehicle queues are traffic jam, traffic congestion, gridlock, and (less technically) hold-up, not “goslow.”
6. CUNNY
................................................
1. INSTALLMENTALLY
...................................................................................................................................................
words we seldom use that are not in the dictionary
“Cunny” is not found in authoritative dictionaries, but it can be found in some slang dictionaries. Over there, it is a slang used to refer to a woman's v**ina. The correct term to use is cunning (which is used to describe someone that is being deceitful or crafty) and not “cunny.”
7. WAKE-KEEPING “Wake-keeping” exists only in the imagination of a few English speakers. As a matter of fact, there is no such thing as “wake-keeping.” The correct word is wake and not even “wakekeep.” Both “wake-keeping” and “wake-keep” are ungrammatical.
8. OPPORTUNED There is nothing like “opportuned” anywhere in the English language, but that has not stopped its blatant use by all and sundry in Nigeria, including journalists and writers. The correct word is opportune. The word opportune is an adjective; therefore it has no past tense. An adjective has no past tense. However, some verbs can function as adjectives or adverbs in a sentence. These verbs are called participles and they do have past tenses. They are not pure adjectives. Examples of participles are fattened, amused, disgusted, mystified, overwhelmed, upset and bored. Be that as it may, opportune is a pure adjective and not a participle, therefore it has no past tense. Opportune means appropriate or well-timed.
a politician has dumped his political party for another party, usually a rival party. The right terms to use when describing this scenario are party switching, defection and crossing the floor and not “cross-carpeting” or “crosscarpeting.”

NIGER POWER PLANT TO BOOST NATIONAL GRID BY 700 MEGAWATTS - FG By Akinyemi Akinrujomu (NAIJ)
-----------------------------------------------
The federal government has confirmed that it is set to boost the current power supply level in the country by not less than 700 megawatts that will be added to the national power grid. This was confirmed by the minister of power, works and housing Babatunde Raji Fashola in a statement issued by Etore Thomas, the deputy director, press in the power ministry. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Fashola said the additional megawatts would come from the Zungeru Hydro power plant which is currently under construction in Niger state. “It is a great and feasible feat that would boost the provision of electricity supply nation-wide. It is a good omen for the attainment of the present administration’s thrust of providing incremental, sustainable and uninterrupted power supply which Nigerians are yearning for”. The statement also revealed that Niger state is also playing host to three other power plants that will equally add massive wattage to the national power grid.
BABATUNDE RAJI FASHOLA MINISTER OF POWER
-----------------------------------------------
“Niger State is housing yet another power project of 700MW; apart from the three other power projects already sited in the state, namely, Jebba, Kainji and Shiroro,” NAN quoted Niger state governor Abubakar Bello, who was represented by the state commissioner for works and transport Abdulmalik Cheche, as saying.
- Power, works and housing minister Raji Fashola has said the government is building power plants in Niger state that would soon boost power supply in the country
Fashola was represented by the director of energy resources in the power ministry Emmanuel Ajayi.
- Fashola said the Zungeru Hydro power plant which is currently being built by Chinese companies will add 700 megawatts to the current level
Recall that just recently the power supply in the country dropped drastically after the country's biggest power plant Egbin dropped to a very low level.

WWE superstar Triple H has revealed his love for a London club who are currently struggling in the Premier League. In a bizarre twist, H is not an Arsenal or Chelsea fan rather he supports West Ham. He revealed last year he was a big hammers fan but reaffirmed that love in a recent interview with ITV where he backed his team to do well in the league.
WWE superstar Triple H is in love The wrestling legend wants his with West Ham team ------------------------- to build on their midweek win
and start moving in the right direction in the Premier League. "They had a win. It's momentum, in the right direction now," he told ITV. "A win's a win! You can't take that away. "Always believe! It's never too late, just keep your head up. Where there's a will there's a way." Triple H has won 14 wrestling championships as well as the King of the Ring title.
