HOW TO MAINTAIN PROPER PROSTATE HEALTH By Anne Green

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men living in the United States, with an estimated 180,890 cases and 16,120 deaths in 2016. The risk of developing prostate cancer increases with age, beginning to rise sharply after age 55 and peaks at age 70-74, declining slightly thereafter. Other risk factors include family history and race. “It is important to know that prostate cancer does not cause any symptoms until it is an advanced stage,” says urologist Francis Shanna, M.D., FACS. “I recommend that men start discussing prostate cancer screening with their doctor around the age of 50 and men with risk factors for prostate cancer (such as black men or men with a family history of prostate cancer) might want to begin screening at age 40 to 45.” A prostate screening may include a prostatespecific antigen screening (PSA) and digital rectal exam which can lead to early diagnosis and treatment. Signs of cancer include a weak flow of urine or frequent urination; pain or burning while urinating; blood in the urine or semen; ongoing pain in the pelvis, back or hips; fatigue; dizziness; and shortness of breath. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, consult your health

care provider. Besides cancer, there are a number of prostate health problems that can become an issue as men age. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) occurs when the prostate gland becomes inflamed or enlarged. It is strictly an age-related phenomenon in nearly all men, starting at approximately 40 years old and, 80 to 90 percent of men in their 70s and 80s have some feature of BPH. The most common reason men under the age of 50 will see a urologist is prostatitis. This health problem is an inflammation or infection of the prostate gland that often results in swelling and pain. It may also lead to urination problems, sexual dysfunction and general health problems such as feeling tired and depressed. Here are recommendations that will help maintain optimal prostate health: • Foods high in lycopene, such as tomatoes (especially when cooked), Omega-3s such as wild-caught fish, and antioxidants such as green tea that promotes detoxification. • Herb supplements that have been proven to reduce the risk of prostate cancer and prostate health issues are lycopene and soy. Be sure to consult your health care

provider before using any form of alternative medicine for treatment of prostate health problems to be sure there are no interactions with any medications you may be taking. • The protective benefits of physical activity increase the body’s ability to modulate hormone levels, prevent obesity, enhance immune function and reduce oxidative stress. THE HISTORY OF THANKSGIVING

In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.

THANKSGIVING AT PLYMOUTH In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers— an assortment of religious separatists seeking a new home where they could freely practice their faith and other individuals lured by the promise of prosperity and land ownership in the New World.

After a treacherous and uncomfortable crossing that lasted 66 days, they dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination at the mouth of the Hudson River. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village at Plymouth. Throughout that first brutal winter, most of the colonists remained on board the ship, where they suffered from exposure, scurvy and outbreaks of contagious disease. Only half of the Mayflower’s original passengers and crew lived to see their first New England spring. In March, the remaining settlers moved ashore, where they received an astonishing visit from an Abenaki Indian who greeted them in English. Several days later, he returned with another Native American, Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe who had been kidnapped by an English sea captain and sold into slavery before escaping to London and returning to his homeland on an exploratory expedition. Squanto taught the Pilgrims, weakened by malnutrition and illness, how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants. He also helped the settlers forge an alliance with the Wampanoag, a local tribe, which would endure for more than 50 years and tragically remains one of the sole examples of harmony between European colonists and Native Americans. In November 1621, after the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast and invited a group of the fledgling colony’s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. Now remembered as American’s “first Thanksgiving”— although the Pilgrims themselves may not have used the term at the time—the festival lasted for three days. While no record exists of the historic banquet’s exact menu, the Pilgrim chronicler Edward Winslow wrote in his journal that Governor Bradford sent four men on a “fowling” mission in preparation for the event, and that the Wampanoag guests arrived bearing five deer. Historians have suggested that many of the dishes were likely prepared using traditional Native American spices and cooking methods. Because the Pilgrims had no oven and the Mayflower’s sugar supply had dwindled by the fall of 1621, the meal did not feature pies, cakes or other desserts, which have become a hallmark of contemporary celebrations. THANKSGIVING BECOMES AN OFFICIAL HOLIDAY Pilgrims held their second Thanksgiving celebration in 1623 to mark the end of a long drought that had threatened the year’s harvest and prompted Governor

Bradford to call for a religious fast. Days of fasting and thanksgiving on an annual or occasional basis became common practice in other New England settlements as well. During the American Revolution, the Continental Congress designated one or more days of thanksgiving a year, and in 1789 George Washington issued the first Thanksgiving proclamation by the national government of the United States; in it, he called upon Americans to express their gratitude for the happy conclusion to the country’s war of independence and the successful ratification of the U.S. Constitution. His successors John Adams and James Madison also designated days of thanks during their presidencies. In 1817, New York became the first of several states to officially adopt an annual Thanksgiving holiday; each celebrated it on a different day, however, and the American South remained largely unfamiliar with the tradition. In 1827, the noted magazine editor and prolific writer Sarah Josepha Hale—author, among countless other things, of the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb”—launched a campaign to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday. For 36 years, she published numerous editorials and sent scores of letters to governors, senators, presidents and other politicians. Abraham Lincoln finally heeded her request in 1863, at the height of the Civil War, in a proclamation entreating all Americans to ask God to “commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife” and to “heal the wounds of the nation.” He scheduled Thanksgiving for the final Thursday in November, and it was celebrated on that day every year until 1939, when Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the holiday up a week in an attempt to spur retail sales during the Great Depression. Roosevelt’s plan, known derisively as Franksgiving, was met with passionate opposition, and in 1941 the president reluctantly signed a bill making Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November. THANKSGIVING TRADITIONS In many American households, the Thanksgiving celebration has lost much of its original religious significance; instead, it now centers on cooking and sharing a bountiful meal with family and friends. Turkey, a Thanksgiving staple so ubiquitous it has become all but synonymous with the holiday, may or may not have been on offer when the Pilgrims hosted the inaugural feast in 1621. Today, however, nearly 90 percent of Americans eat the bird—whether roasted, baked or deep-fried—on Thanksgiving, according to the National Turkey Federation. Other traditional foods include stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Volunteering is a common Thanksgiving Day activity, and communities often hold food drives and host free dinners for the less fortunate. Beginning in the mid-20th century and perhaps even earlier, the president of the United States has “pardoned” one or two Thanksgiving turkeys each year, sparing the birds from slaughter and sending them to a farm for retirement. A number of U.S. governors also perform the annual turkey pardoning ritual.

FALL 2017

Why You Should Buy a Car, a Truck or Equipment Before the End of the Year Before you make the purchase, make sure that your new car, truck or equipment is considered a tax write-off. This article is part of the End of Year Tax Tips Series from tax and legal expert Mark J. Kohler.

the vehicle. You will now need to track your fuel, repairs, maintenance, insurance and tires, as well as “depreciate” the vehicle or a portion of the lease payment if leasing.

It’s not uncommon for business owners to make big purchases before year-end to get the tax write-off. This couldn’t be truer when it comes to buying a car, truck, RV or van for your business. However, making that big purchase isn’t always the best long-term tax decision, not to mention the wisest economic decision. Both are critical issues that I will explore below.

At first glance, business owners often think that the actual method is a big write-off because they see all of these expenses going out the door with the car payment; however, the car payment amount is irrelevant in the analysis. Thus, you have to bank on the depreciation deduction to make this strategy really pay off, which is drastically limited with cars but can pay off big time with trucks, SUVs, vans and RVs (see below).

Essentially, there are two main options to write off auto expenses: mileage or actual. The mileage method is quite obvious, but the definition of “actual expenses” can get a little complicated. In fact, the actual method can encompass leasing a vehicle, as well fuel, insurance, repairs, maintenance and even depreciation. But before we get into the strategy of strolling into the auto dealership on Dec. 31 to buy that new car or truck, let’s get down the basics.

Also, keep in mind that when you choose to use the actual method, you’re now stuck with his procedure and you can’t use the mileage method again with that car -- there is no

2017 Ford Super Duty

going back!

The mileage method On any of your vehicles, you can use mileage as an excellent method to expense the business use of your vehicle. In 2016, potential mileage deductions are as follows:

Finally, from a bookkeeping standpoint, it’s important to pay for all of the expenses I described above from your business account so that you don’t miss any of them come tax time. Don’t co-mingle the payment of these auto expenses with your personal account. It can be a nightmare to try and dissect.

• Business: $0.54/mile

The pros and cons of depreciation

• Charity: $0.14/mile

• Medical and moving: $0.19/mile

• Personal or commuting: No deduction

Again, the problem with the actual method is that the depreciation expense can be tricky to understand and calculate. It will vary dramatically based on the type of vehicle, and the business use percentage still plays a big factor.

Ninety percent of my tax clients use mileage because it’s simple, easy and a large deduction. For instance, keep in mind that a car payment is not a deduction. When you compare mileage to “actual,” it’s important to understand what is “actually” deductible if you use the actual method.

Actual expenses The second method in deducting automobile expenses is to write off actual expenses for

For example, depreciation is drastically limited for cars, and even if you buy a big truck, you have to still track mileage to show the percentage you use the vehicle for business. However, it starts to get better and better when the vehicle weighs more than 6,000 pounds. But keep in mind there are different rules for SUVs and the type of truck you may drive. The exciting part is that this depreciation deduction really opens up for large trucks, vans and RVs in certain instances. SUV or truck with a bed that’s less than six feet. Both of these types of vehicles are treated the same for tax purposes. Yes, Congress and the IRS feel that many of these trucks with shorter truck beds are more like SUVs than trucks, thus they fall into the same tax category. Now, the allowable depreciation for these types of vehicles, on top of actual expenses described above, is that you can take up to $25,000 as a deduction right off the purchase price, whether the truck or SUV is new or used. You also get to take the standard annual depreciation deduction of around $3,000 in the year of purchase. This little $25,000 writeoff is often a perfect fit for a business owner looking for one of these types of vehicles, and it can exceed the mileage deduction in the first few years you own the vehicle.

171

ECONOMIC TIP: From a dollars and cents standpoint, this strategy really pays off if you indeed want and need one of these types of vehicles -- and you don’t plan on putting a ton of miles on it or trading in the vehicle in three to four years. But for those of you planning to put on a ton of miles or keep the vehicle longer than the average American, the mileage method will give you more bang for your buck in the long run.

Again, keep in mind the business use percentage of the depreciation and all of the actual expenses (fuel, repairs, maintenance, etc.). For example, say you have $20,000 in annual expenses and depreciation, and 80 percent of your use of the vehicle is for business. Thus, you are allowed a $16,000 deduction. Moreover, keep in mind that you have show net income in your business. The extra depreciation can’t put you into a “loss” to deduct against other income.

Large trucks and vans. If the truck or van weighs more than 6,000 pounds and the truck has a six-foot bed (or greater) or is an enclosed 2017 Ford Transit Box Truck delivery truck, then the $25,000 SUV limitation does not apply. In fact, you can deduct up to $500,000 for the cost of the vehicle in the year of purchase (limited to the business use percentage described previously).

Because of the higher cost of these vehicles, it’s much more likely the actual method will far exceed the mileage method in the long run. This is also because the operational costs, such as gas and repairs, can be higher with these more expensive types of vehicles. Though again, keep in mind that these large depreciation deductions in the first year are limited to your net income. Therefore, a more profitable or seasoned business is going to get a better write-off than a company in startup mode that is not showing a profit yet.

What Is the History of Black Friday?

The History of Black Friday Started Earlier Than You Think By Kimberly Amadeo

The history of Black Friday started much earlier than people think. The day after Thanksgiving was the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season since the late 19th century. President Lincoln designated the Thanksgiving holiday as the last Thursday in November. It wasn't called Black Friday then. That's because the name was associated with September 24, 1869. Two speculators created a boom-and-bust in the gold market. In 1905, Canadian department store Eaton's

In the 1950s, people began calling in sick the day after Thanksgiving, essentially giving themselves a four-day weekend. Since stores were open, as were most businesses, those playing hooky could also get a head start on their holiday shopping -- as long as the boss didn't see them. Rather than try to determine whose pay should be cut, and who was legitimately sick, many businesses started adding that day as another paid holiday.

Contrary to some accounts popularized on the Internet, Black Friday was not originally the day where slave traders gave discounts at auctions. The Black Friday name itself didn't become famous until 1966. That's when a story appeared in an ad in The American Philatelist, a stamp collectors' magazine. The Philadelphia Police Department used the name to describe the traffic jams and crowding in the downtown stores. NOVEMBER HAS FALLEN By Donna Stroffolino

and fresh air walking or driving on our parkway. It is still not too bitter cold to be outside. Even heading over to the beach or a boardwalk on a sunny day is still a fun time.

Professional Stylist, Simply Hair

Fall has arrived, from the fallen leaves to the fallen temperatures. It seemed like October was a month filled with warm sunny days and we might get through the Fall like that. We were still heading over to the beach to get the last of those warm days in. On the Island the seasonal crowds have gone, along with the traffic lights. It’s quiet and tranquil there with a few shops still open. There were people walking early in the morning, riding their bikes, or flying a kite on the empty beach. The annual kite festival was even held on the island this past month. The dogs were especially happy running on the beach again. It was a nice long taste of summer warmth for us here at the Shore. A busy time for many with numerous activities as the new school year gets in full swing. Baseball games finished up, and football ends by the end of the month in town. There are still many sports games to watch on tv with endless college football games, and NFL ones too most days. High School concerts and local Shows can fill your weekends too. Add in some Fall Festivals and craft shows and you might be doing so much at once your head spins. It happens to many of us, especially when we need to fit in family special events too. All these activities are special times to spend with family and friends. It’s ok to be busy all the time; it means our lives are rich with happy days.

With all these activities remember to spend a little of the day all to yourself. Some quiet time either early in the morning or after a long day at work goes a long way. At the end of October the leaves turned so many beautiful colors. Take notice of them, they quickly disappear in November. The air cools down and the wind kicks up. Then they are gone for another year. Enjoy your Fall and Thanksgiving holiday with your family and friends.

There are numerous festivals to attend this time of year in the few counties North and South. Check out this paper that has lists of local activities. There will be something for everyone. A Festival is a great time to sell your art or crafts, or buy gifts for yourself or the holidays. It is even a great day to walk around and get out of the house for no reason at all. You can enjoy the beauty of the trees

Give Back This Holiday Season My name is Herb Wills and I have been a sales consultant here at Causeway out of the Ford and Lincoln showroom since August 2016. With the recent engagement to my longtime girlfriend and finding a career I can dig my roots into - her and I have been looking for ways in which to get more involved in the community. I have been a member of Manahawkin Baptist Church since 2006 and have played guitar on their worship team since 2007. I wanted to shed some light on a way anyone can get involved and give back this holiday season. Manahawkin Baptist is working alongside of Family Promise - a non-profit organization that provides temporary

housing, hospitality and meals for families experiencing homelessness- the week of Thanksgiving and Christmas. Family Promise started in January 25, 2009 and since the opening of their doors the demand has far exceeded their capacity to assist all families in the community. Through the help of surrounding churches, organization, hundreds of volunteers and a dedicated staff, Family Promise has been able to feed, house and offer case management to aid families. Family promise is in need of gift cards to distribute to local families, which gives an opportunity to help give back this holiday season. In increments of $25 and $50 from places such as Shoprite, Wawa, Wal-Mart, Kohl’s, etc. For more information and additional ways to get involved visit their website www.fpsocstaff.wixsite.com/ familypromisesoc or contact them at 609-994-3317

going to support disaster relief and recovery. To beat the record, organizers needed to have more than 1,387 take part. The record was set in June at an event held on the shore of Lake Michigan in Ludington, Michigan.

SEASIDE PARK - Thousands gathered Saturday to break the Guinness Book of World Records entry for most sand angels created at one time, all while raising money for charity. Congratulations to the Southern Regional Girls Soccer team on being named the 2017 Shore Conference Ocean County Sportsmanship Award winner voted on by the Shore Soccer Officials Association for the 2nd consecutive year. The Rams improved to 7 overall wins and qualified for the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 4 playoffs.

Girls Gymnastics Congratulations Southern Regional Gymnastics senior Noelle Englebert on winning a $500 at the 2017 Maureen Sutphen meet on Monday, October 30th. The meet was held at Brick Twp. High School. Noelle is pictured with members of the Maureen Sutphen Gymnastics Meet committee.

Organizers said over 1,600 participated in the event - lying down in the sand and making angels at the Seaside Park boardwalk. The event came nearly five years to the day that Superstorm Sandy made its way up the New Jersey coastline, slamming the area.

Those who registered for Saturday’s Jersey Shore sand angel attempt raised over $30,000. The Guinness Book of World Records will still need to verify how many actually took part before certifying the Seaside Heights event as a new world record. In addition to the sand angels event, the NJ League of Conservation Voters Education Fund is joining the cause to commemorate Superstorm Sandy five years later. The league is calling in more than a dozen environmental partners to commemorate the lives and properties lost, and to demand immediate action on climate change.

To commemorate, participants made sand angels while raising money for Ocean County Long Term Recovery Group which is helping victims that are still affected by Sandy. Money will also goes to the Salvation Army 2017 Hurricane Relief to benefit victims of 2017’s storms. Registration cost $5 for participants, but OceanFirst Foundation and New Jersey Natural Gas said they will donate $10 for each of the first 1,500 registrants, with all of the funds raised

IVANKA TRUMP VISITS JERSEY SHORE TO PUSH TAX REFORM

BERKLEY — The pitch for the Republican tax reform plan comes to Ocean County on Monday with two members of President Donald Trump’s inner circle. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter and advisor, will cohost a discussion at the Bayville Fire Hall on Route 9 starting at 10:30 a.m.. They will be joined by Rep. Tom MacArthur. Trump appeared at a similar event in Biddeford, Maine on Friday with Sen. Susan Collins, a moderate Republican who often disagrees with the president. The tax plan is about “supporting American families,” Trump told the crowd. “The stated goal is twofold: enable our businesses to be competitive and thrive and to provide meaningful tax relief to middle income families,” she said.

During an appearance on Varney & Co on Fox Business Channel after Election Day, MacArthur discussed his effort to include a deduction for property taxes. “The vast majority of people in New Jersey will be able to deduct all of their property taxes. The (tax) rates are coming down so much that people in New Jersey will

see a federal increase in our plan,” MacArthur said. When Varney challenged MacArthur about the unchanged rate for the top 1 percent in New Jersey, MacArthur said he has thoroughly reviewed the plan and determined most everyone would benefit from the reform plan.

proposal offers a “lower, simpler, fairer plan” that closes loopholes. Democrats have pushed back against the tax plan, in part because it would eliminate deductions claimed by many taxpayers. The Senate version would repeal deductions of state and local taxes.

“I’ve looked at every income bracket, I’ve looked at the effect of losing deductions plus losing the AMT, which is a good thing, and there is no income bracket in the state of New Jersey that the average person in that bracket won’t go down.”

MacArthur is not in complete lockstep with the president on some issues. He has joined several other representatives, including Democrat Donald Norcross, to support adding questions about sexual orientation and gender identity on the 2020 US Census form.

According to the IRS, the AMT, also known as the Alternative Minimum Tax, “applies to taxpayers with high economic income by setting a limit on those benefits. It helps to ensure that those taxpayers pay at least a minimum amount of tax.” MacArthur said the

HYUNDAI TEAMS UP WITH WAIVECAR TO OFFER IONIQ ELECTRIC VEHICLES AS PART OF FREE CAR-SHARING PROGRAM HYUNDAI TEAMS UP WITH WAIVECAR TO OFFER IONIQ ELECTRIC VEHICLES AS PART OF FREE CAR-SHARING PROGRAM LOS ANGELES - Hyundai Motor and WaiveCar, the world’s first all-electric car-sharing program that runs on advertising dollars, today announced a partnership that will expose millions of shoppers to the all-new Hyundai IONIQ electric compact car for free. The partnership, proposed by WaiveCar as part of Hyundai’s Project IONIQ open call, gives consumers the ability to drive IONIQ EVs on-demand for two hours at no charge. In exchange, the vehicle is wrapped in advertising and includes a roof mounted digital display, which generates the advertising revenue WaiveCar uses to offset costs. WaiveCar’s digital displays are 4G connected enabling dynamic, geo-targeted advertising tailored to ones driving location and time of day. For example, while sitting in morning traffic on the 405 freeway, the ad could read, “This commute would be a lot more comfortable in a Hyundai IONIQ.” “WaiveCar presents some great solutions for us,” said Mark Dipko, director of corporate planning and strategy at Hyundai Motor America. “The IONIQ offers emissions-free transportation to on-the-go Angelenos. This partnership allows us to reach potential customers and give them the opportunity to test drive our outstanding IONIQ electric while generating awareness for the IONIQ brand at the same time.” The program, which will launch in early 2017, is Hyundai’s first large-scale involvement in car-sharing and is aimed at making it easy for those without a vehicle to access short-term, free, and engaging transportation. Customers can simply download WaiveCar’s app for iPhone or Android, find an IONIQ near them, book it and start driving — no cards or keys necessary. WaiveCar then unlocks the door for consumers remotely, where
