2013 STAR VALLEY FALL SPORTS GUIDE, STAR VALLEY INDEPENDENT – 3

WHAT TO EXPECT

After three straight seasons that ended in quarter-final defeats in the opening round of the playoffs, the Braves were just looking for ways to capitalize on what they had going for them. Slowly but surely the receiving corps had gotten deeper from top to bottom, the ball carriers also had improved depth and potential and the biggest question at the beginning of 2011- line play - turned into the biggest strength of the team in 2012. The result was the program’s first 9-win season since 2005 and an offense that produced the second-highest season total in the program’s history with 353. (The 442 scored by the 1967 team is the school record.) In fact, the only things that really left fans, players and coaches wanting, was how the season ended, with a close loss to the Powell Panthers in the state championship game held in Laramie. In a season with nine wins, it is the pair of losses to the Panthers that have festered the most. Despite a heavy departure rate, especially among the linemen, there is high expectations among a program that hopes they have turned the proverbial corner into perennial contenders. There are questions to be answered and roles yet to be determined, but the potential for another run to Laramie is certainly present. Departures: There is no bigger single loss on offense than Ryan Brough who set new school records with 1,534 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns. Brough’s transformation from offensive lineman to devastating running back was a treat for Braves fans and a head-shaker for opponents. What Brough was on the offensive side, Marshall Watkins was on the defensive side. Watkins quietly rolled up 11 quarterback sacks in 2012, including three in the championship game. His stellar play along with the rest of his defensive linemen such as Jordan Semadeni and Derrick Wolfley dominated opponents most weekends. In the receiving corp and on special teams, Kohl Battleson Continued on page 6

WILL THE S.V. BRAVES RETURN TO LARAMIE?

KNOW YOUR OPPONENT SNAKE RIVER PANTHERS LANDER TIGERS DOUGLASBEARCATS 4 – 2013 STAR VALLEY FALL SPORTS GUIDE, STAR VALLEY INDEPENDENT

WHAT TO EXPECT

What was once a revolving door of Idaho schools for Star Valley’s non-conference match ups has now been reduced to just the Panthers. The two schools have played every season since 2006 with Snake River winning the first four games and Star Valley winning the last three. The 2011 Idaho State Champs were knocked out by eventual champion Shelley last season. They typically have a strong blend of run and pass. The Panthers will miss the arm of Wyatt Wray who led them the past two years as their quarterback as well as Nate Martin who led the team in rushing last season. This year’s team will look to return to a spread style of offense after utilizing a Wing-T offense the past three seasons which resulted in a 3A Idaho state championship in 2011. The Panthers have already claimed their first win of the season, a 20-16 victory on the road over South Fremont. The last time these two teams met on the Panther field, the Braves scored ten points in just over two minutes to steal a victory 10-9.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The Tigers had some major struggles in 2012 (2-7) after a strong campaign in 2011 (7-2). Coach Doug Hughes has compiled a 22-24 overall record in five seasons for the Tigers. Lander has plenty of returning varsity players but they will need to keep building on a season where they were outscored 22583. The offense will need strong performances from returning players such as quarterback Tylor Baker and Jack Mazurie who missed most of last season with injuries. Look for increased roles from Jess Oldham at wide receiver and youngster Noah Rohrbacker at tailback. With 38 of those 83 offensive points coming against woeful Rawlins, the Lander offense will be under the microscope in 2013. The Tigers were on the receiving end of a 68-0 drubbing by the Braves on their home field last year and would likely enjoy some payback in Afton where they won in 2011 on the back of Mazurie’s two interceptions for touchdowns. There may be some anxious Lander parents in the stands this season as the Tigers have failed to make it out of the quarterfinal round of the playoffs since 2004.

WHAT TO EXPECT

As the cream of the crop in the 3A classification from 20082010, the Bearcats had to settle for a loss to Green River on their own field in the quarterfinals last season, breaking a streak of four consecutive title game appearances for Coach Jay Rhodes. Since taking over the program in 2006, Coach Rhodes has been in the title game five times and compiled a record of 59-15 overall. The Braves’ 28-0 win over the ‘Cats was the first time a Wyoming team had shut out Douglas since the 2003 season. Returning to avenge that loss will be quarterback Austin Matthews and running back Logan Barker. The latter had over 1,000 yards rushing last year as a junior. Tight end Colter Haman and four returning offensive linemen should also be a big factor this season as the Bearcats attempt to get back on top of the 3A classification. Reports out of Douglas have stated nearly 100 players were out for the football team this season, signaling that the Bearcats don’t much care for the last two seasons without a state championship trophy to hoist.

WORLAND WARRIORS POWELL PANTHERS WHAT TO EXPECT

After more than a decade under former coach Wade Sanford, the Warriors went (2-7) last season under Curt Mayer. Mayer resigned just two days before the beginning of this season on August 17, so Josh Garcia and Bryan Bailey enter this season as co-head coaches. While things could have gone worse, with wins over Rawlins and Torrington that could have gone the other way, things will need to improve if the Warriors want to become the same program that claims ten state titles in a very illustrious history. If there was one word to describe the troubles last year, it might be “defense”. The Warriors gave up a whopping 392 points last season. That’s nearly 44 points per game. Opponents routinely marched into the end zone and the offense, which had its bright moments, could not keep up. Clay Armstrong returns at quarterback and athletic standout Casey Hernandez will as well. But this team will need to overcome a lack of overall numbers and improve on the defensive side of the ball to return to the playoffs.

WHAT TO EXPECT

It’s hard to believe that coach Jim Stringer was drawing community criticism as late as October of 2011. Since then, his Panthers upset Green River and Douglas for a state championship in 2011 and then went undefeated for another title last year. He is on the verge of something very special in Powell with more returning all-state players (six) than anyone else as they go for the three-peat. Returning under center and in the defensive secondary will be Hayden Cragoe who will vie for 3A’s best QB. In the backfield will be two more all-staters in Garrett Lynch and Cory Heny. Throw in some big and experienced linemen like Riley Stringer and defenders like Tony Lujan and Powell is the team to beat in 2013. The Panthers handed Star Valley both of their losses last season including a heartbreaker in the state championship. Perhaps the best thing the Braves have going for them in what should be a very tight race for the 3A West is that Powell struggles in Afton where the two teams play on October 4. If the Panther defense can be as stingy as they were last year, they may very well be playing in Laramie again in November.

CODYBRONCS WHAT TO EXPECT The team with the secondmost returning all-staters behind Powell is not Star Valley but Cody. The Broncs youth movement advanced to the semi-finals last year and produced four returning all-state players. Coach Chris Williams unexpectedly resigned from his duties after 13 seasons as the head coach and defensive coordinator, Matt McFadden, has taken over a team that built big expectations at the end of last year. John Beaudrie (QB), Tate Pehringer (RB), Carter Myers (FB), Brandon Hinze (RB) and David Lee (OL/DL) return with what looks to be a big set of linemen to push Powell and Star Valley for the top of the conference crown. The big question appears to be: Can McFadden keep the momentum from last year’s strong finish? Although many of the Braves’ faithful are mindful of catching the Panthers, there are just as many who keep checking the rearview mirror for the Broncs who went from a 39-0 drubbing to a 19-6 slugfest from the regular season game in Afton to the semi-final match up. Dark horse? You better believe it.

GREEN RIVER WOLVES JACKSON BRONCS WHAT TO EXPECT

Since rejoining the 3A Class in 2011, Don Maggi’s Wolves have gone 15-6 in two seasons but have come up short of the state title game in semi-finals defeats both years. Green River was 3A’s leading rushing team from a year ago but they will have big shoes to fill at the skill positions. Tanner Trumble was the lone bright spot in the Wolves’ 42-0 loss to Star Valley last year and will combine with Brady Barlow to help fill the void. Green River has some potential on the line with four returning players over 200 pounds but they will need to replace some stellar offensive talent from the last two seasons. With the shuffling of classifications over the past several decades, recent matchups with Green River have been rare, but these two teams will play for the 65th time this fall, the secondlongest active streak for SVHS. FYI: Did you know that former Braves head coach, Jerry Hart, coached the Wolves for two seasons before coming to Afton? Before winning over 80 games in crimson & gold, Hart went 12-71 in two seasons wearing the green.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Coach James Howell has tried to get the Broncs back to glory the past three seasons, compiling a 6-19 record coming into this year. Jackson played with some very young players earning varsity time last season, and the Jackson faithful hope that translates to victories in 2013. Since going undefeated in 2007, the Broncs have not won more than three games in a season. There may not be another team with as many returning starters as the Teton County crew. Last year’s match up in the Fall Brawl was one for the record books. Andrew Linsenmann set a new school record for rushing yards in a game against the Braves while Trace Haderlie set new school records for passing yards and passing touchdowns against the Broncs. Haderlie returns for Star Valley while the Broncs will rely on Brady Anderson at quarterback again and speedy Will Elzemeyer in the backfield and returning all-conference selection, Jonathan Tzompa on the line. Defensively Jackson brings back plenty of tacklers with Brandon Hernandez, Kris Lunde and Josh Frantz leading the way.

Continued from page 3 was a playmaker of the first degree. He was third on the team in rushing yards and led the team in receiving yards and touchdowns. Offense: The good news is the Braves have not one but two returning all-state players. Quarterback, Trace Haderlie, threw for 1,572 yards and 16 touchdowns as a junior and should have no shortage of players to spread the ball around to in 2013. Sam Gertsch, the other retuning all-stater, had a total of 362 yards rushing and receiving and was a force at linebacker in 2012. The heir apparent in the backfield is Eric Pantuso who had 155 yards before his season was cut short due to injury. Also in the backfield will be fullback Bryan Nichols who combined for 230 yards of offense including 13 receptions. Senior Tyler Allred led the team in yards per reception last season (23.8) along with 285 yards overall. Allred made his presence felt on defense as well. He will be joined by speedster Bryan Burton who appears to be the fastest player on the team. Burton’s touches on offense last year were infrequent, but he will likely fill the role of slot receiver nailed down by Battleson in 2012. Other promising newcomers to the varsity level should be Trevor Palmer, Jesse Sanders, Cole Critchfield and Nigel Dice. Critchfield, a junior, appears to have the tools to thrive in this type of offense. The offensive line will be challenged with injuries and new varsity players leaning on Andy Nield, Garrett Gregg, Austin Hoopes and Hayden Hillyard until Andy Erickson returns from injury. Defense: The defensive line will be comprised of a rotating group of nose tackles such as Nathan Henderson, Shannon Mortenson and Paul Semadeni with Hayden Hillyard and Brennen Robinson holding down the end spots along with Rocky Hansen. Semadeni and Zach Rawson should help rotate in for depth. Erickson is likely to start upon his return to full strength. The linebackers will be a salty group of Nield, Gregg, Gertsch and Hoopes with Ian Anderson rotating in. The secondary is as big, physical and deep a group as Coach Howell has had with Haderlie and Allred playing safety and Dayne Abrams, Sanders, Burton, Palmer and Pantuso rotating through as cornerbacks. It is a good year to have the making of a tough secondary with returning passers such as Hayden Cragoe in Powell and Austin Matthews in Douglas.

VOLLEYBALL

WILL THE LADY BRAVES FINISH WHAT THEY STARTED?

WHAT TO EXPECT

It was 147 to 146 in overall points in last season’s 3A state volleyball championship between Star Valley and Torrington. The Blazers took game five in emotional fashion for their first ever title while the Lady Braves were forced to examine the possibilities of an extremely close weekend. Last year the cream of the 3A crop was incredibly close; Torrington, Star Valley and Douglas were mere centimeters apart down the stretch. This year? A cursory glance seems to show that the phrase “wide open” may be the most apt description. So a year after coming so close with such a strong team, could a state title be in the cards for the returning Lady Braves? Time will tell. The Returners: The cupboard isn’t exactly bare. In fact, six returning seniors give this squad the potential for a strong run. The Hitters: Call them the S & S Railroad with Shelbey Brog and Shay Schwab filling the primary hitter roles to begin this season. Brog, now pushing the tape at 5’ 11” with an even longer wingspan, is the leading returning hitter with 228 kills last year as a junior and a strong regional and state tournament where she was a terrific balance to Lexi Erickson’s power game. Now likely to fill a role as a hitter in her senior campaign, southpaw Shay Schwab will see a lot more opportunities at the net, especially on second-ball attempts. Schwab is perhaps the strongest player on the team and her left-handed ability will certainly confuse some opponents this season. In addition, Schwab is likely to fill the role of setter at times where she spent most of last season, but her power at the net may be too much to ignore. Also interjecting herself into the conversation as hitter is Jennifer Hardy. Though small in stature, Hardy was often an emotional leader last season with momen-

LAST YEAR • 2012: (29-7) Last year the quartet of Torrington, Star Valley, Douglas and Cody went into the season with clear-cut expectations. tum-stealing blocks and kills on much taller players. Hardy was tentatively slated to compete for the libero position at the end of last season, but a desire and work ethic to figure more in the offense has landed her on the front row. The Setters: A vital component of this decision was Mckenna Johnson, a hard-working, blue-collar player who opened eyes at the summer camp with her progress as a setter. Unfortunately, an early season shoulder injury has derailed Johnson’s season, so the staff is inserting sophomore Morgan Dana and junior Chloe Cazier to compete for the role. Contributors: While some teams may be scrambling to find height and ability at the net, the Lady Braves will conversely be working on ways to make it work to their advantage. Another player pushing the 5’ 10’ - 5’ 11” ceiling is Michelle Pierson. Her scrappy nature and ability to hold down the middle of the front row should help open up holes for her teammates. Also in this role is McKinley Laker, back in the crimson & gold after one season in Idaho playing for the Bonneville Bees. Laker is one of the top athletes in her class and her abilities at the net should also open up avenues for her game as well as for others. Libero: After losing the cat-like quickness of Hailey Greenwood to graduation, this role is likely to be filled through old-fashioned competition. Kenedey Brog is one of those battling to take the position as a junior. She will be competing with sophomore Linde Moore for the job. Surprises: A strong group of incoming freshman has the potential to move up the ladder right away. Shania Warren is likely to play junior varsity immediately with the possibility of varsity time as the season progresses, while Savannah Lucero is another player likely to contribute as a freshman.

ARE THE FLOODGATES OPEN FOR SVXC?

WHAT TO EXPECT

With their tie-dye groovy shirts, the Star Valley CrossCountry teams are indeed a group of throwbacks. Much like The Doors’ famous phrase “break on through to the other side,” the SVXC squads finally did just that last fall. The Lady Braves have won four consecutive regional championships, two in 4A and two in 3A, but it wasn’t until last October that they were able to exercise the state meet demons in a thrilling performance that left little in doubt. The Braves haven’t exactly had the string of dominant regional performances, but they had plenty of close-calls before hoisting the trophy for the first time with a dominating run to the boys’ title trophy in 2012. So after years of battling and nursing blisters and hounding parents for new sets of shoes, are the floodgates open for an extended title run for Ty Draney’s harriers? Possibly: The funny thing about perennial powers is that they have to do it every single year without fail. Those reputations are forged one race, one effort and one season at a time. But if you wanted to look at the returning runners and be excited, nobody would blame you. Lady Braves: First off, there is no replacing Hailey Ricks. The two-time Wyoming Gatorade Distance Runner of the Year won three consecutive individual titles and literally rewrote the distance records at the school. But if you can’t have her back for another year (and you can’t, she’s running on scholarship for Weber State), you can have a runner who had even faster times than Ricks in her sophomore season by comparison. Hannah Demler opened eyes as a freshman with her good times and a gritty effort with one shoe at the state cross-country meet. Last year, she was the uppercut to

COACH

“One of the mottos I use with the team is: You never step in the same river twice. They say “Sure you can.” But when I say it, I mean you can step in the river, but that river has changed. It’s not the same. That’s how it is with this program. It feels familiar, but it’s a different team this year.” -Cross-Country Head Coach Ty Draney

Ricks’ haymaker. Now she returns as one of the team leaders in her junior year after earning all-state honors. She won’t be alone. Joining Demler on the returning champs will be senior Dakota Bateman, sophomore Madison Ashworth and a trio of juniors in Tori Heap, Courtney Smith and Aspen Heward. This group with the exception of Heward, all finished in the top 23 of last year’s championship. The pool would be even deeper if not for the relocation of all-stater BreeAnn Guzman to California. Joining this impressive returning potential is a large crop of new freshmen. The Lady Braves have a habit of seeing freshman contribute and compete for varsity spots (See Ricks, Demler, Bateman and Ashworth for starters.) The ladies will face stiff competition from the Cody Fillies who slipped by them in 2011 but had to settle for runner-up in 2012. The Fillies return their entire team from last season. The Lady Broncs from Jackson typically have strong performances as well and have many incoming freshmen who should make their mark on the varsity lineup. Conclusion: When I started covering the SVXC program in 2003, the boys and girls teams combined had 27 runners. That’s not bad, but the prospect of having 20 in one class and one gender and 50 in the program is a testament to Draney’s rapport with the runners as well as former coach Corena Ricks. New assistant Heather Thompson along with Draney aren’t ones to rest on their laurels. The competition for varsity spots could be fierce this season, just like they want it to be. Braves: Much like their female counterparts, the Braves will not be lacking for returning contributors. They lose valuable runners like all-stater Gabe Waldron and Jason Livingston. But Cody Peck returns for his junior season after barely finishing behind Cody’s Devyn Brotherton for the individual title last season. Peck’s all-state performance wasn’t surprising. What is mildly surprising as been the emergence of junior Nic Demler who was right on the heels of his teammate during the outdoor track season. The pair could very easily combine for top-five finishes if things go well. Maybe even some top-three finishes. Providing senior leadership will be Zachary Dubisz who has patiently been one of the most consistent performers in the program over his career. Sophomore Aaron Abrams notched a few varsity finishes last year and will push to move up the wolf pack food chain as will junior Jake Thompson. There is no shortage of other runners looking to break into the varsity ranks with Coulton Hirschi, Mitch Rider, Brian Campbell and others competing hard. Conclusion: While Peck and Demler will have tough competition from individuals like Brotherton, Matt Scarlett of Buffalo and Brody Smith of Cody, it’s much harder to predict the team race. The Jackson Broncs have had their share of success with a team title in 2011 and a runner-up finish in 2012. The Teton squad loses some of their more impressive runners to graduation, so it’s possible they will fall behind teams like Cody and also the Lander Tigers. On paper, the Braves have a very strong returning core that will be pushed by a hungry group of youngsters and may just have what it takes for a repeat title.

HOW HIGH CAN THE GOLFERS FINISH THIS SEASON?

WHAT TO EXPECT

For the first time in several years, the Braves golf team finished in the top five, collected an all-state nod and ended their season with enough momentum that there was again excitement about the program. With four players returning from last year’s five state representatives in Worland, expectations are higher on the staff for an even better run at the team title. It won’t be easy. Defending champion Jackson easily pulled away for the team title in 2012, besting second place Lander by 41 strokes, and should have a formidable group returning. The Braves finished fourth overall last season, their first top-five finish in seven years. The last team title for Star Valley came in 2004. Leading the way for the boys team this year is returning senior all-stater, Carson Walker. After a fifth place finish individually at last year’s state tournament, Walker has paid the price this past spring and summer to become a better golfer and will challenge for a strong finish at the top of the leader board. Joining Walker will be a pair of sophomores who cut their varsity teeth as freshmen last season. Brady Fullmer finished 16th overall in his first season of high school golf and as the son of the head coach, he certainly seen his share of time on the links once the snow was gone. Along with Fullmer is Nick Hagar who finished last year at state with one of his best rounds of the year and whose relative newness to the game may mean a breakout season is in store in 2013. Brand new to the high school program is a pair of freshmen who have inserted themselves into the varsity lineup. Seth Schwab and Justin Johnson help give the program depth for the first time in a long time. Also returning is Aaron Zahne who filled a varsity roll in many tournament last season as the staff hopes continued improvement can be made to push the overall team score lower

COACH

“We have to make hay with this team now with a guy like Carson. He is a top-five caliber guy every time we play, so we need to rise to the challenge and make that pay off. And if we can continue to made improvement on the girls side, I think we have a very good chance to win the state title.” SVHS Golf Coach Kelly Fullmer

2013 STAR VALLEY FALL SPORTS GUIDE- STAR VALLEY INDEPENDENT – 13 and lower. Lady Braves As for the Lady Braves, a consistent and solid group of players can cause havoc among the team scores in the 3A ranks where many schools struggle to field a full team. Star Valley has the players, most of which are still new to the game. The breaththrough performances that the staff was waiting for never came to pass a season ago, continuing the hope that a troupe long on potential will finally realize the extent of their talents this season. Paige Anderson, MacKenzie Price and Jessica Lusty all had moments of tantalizing flashes last season, but consistency is still the primary factor for a team looking to move up from an eighth place finish in Worland last year. Newcomers, Hunter Hicks and Naomi Watkins give the Lady Braves an enviable group for most teams in the Cowboy State. Hicks may be a wild card, already finishing with some of the top rounds on the team so far this season. Cody is one of the teams to beat, having claimed last year’s team title and three of the six overall since their return to the 3A classification. Lander has also won twice with Rawlins the lone remaining champion to break up the monopoly with a title in 2010 on their home course. The Lady Braves last won a team title in 2004, a repeat of a title in 2003. Also key in the development of the program is the continued maturation of the 18-hole Star Valley View course just five minutes from SVHS. Now in year four, head coach Kelly Fullmer believes he is seeing the fruits of labor laid down years in advance. This year’s 3A state tournament will be played in Buffalo.
