HANDICARE Smart Wearable Hand Reliever
Handicare is a series of smart hand protectors, mainly targeting the De Quervain syndrome (stenosing tenosynovitis). Handicare uses an APP to detect the hand muscle force, and a replaceable module(vibration/electrotherapy) to soothe area of pain. Moreover, traditional steel bars are replaced with the inflated pump for support so as to achieve the effect of lighter weight and better fit to the hand.
12
13
Found Issue While walking around Yongle Market (A fabric market), I realise that many workers were wearing hand protectors on either of their hands. After inquiring out of curiosity, I understood that the workers needed hand protectors , because of tendonitis due to long hours use of wrist during work. This medical symptom is called DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis (Mother’s Wrist).
14
DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis is caused mainly by overuse, particularly from forceful gripping with activities that require movements of the wrist. Less commonly, it can be caused by direct trauma to the wrist. Symptoms of DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis include pain, cramps and tenderness on the radial side of the wrist.
15
A
B
De Quervain syndrome is inflammation of two tendons that control movement of the thumb and their tendon sheath. This results in pain at the outside of the wrist.
Similar diseases is Carpal tunnel syndrome. It is a medical condition due to compression of the median nerve as it travels through the wrist at the carpal tunnel.
Cooperation with the hospital In order to understand more in depth, we visited the hospital(Taipei Veterans General Hospital) to ask the main cause of De Quervain syndrome and how to improve it. The doctor said “ Treatment includes rest, ice, anti-inflammatories, physical therapy, bracing of the wrist and thumb, and steroid injections. If these are not successful, surgery may be needed.
When we proposed that we wanted to improve the existing protective equipment and emhance it into a completely new design, doctors verified and expressed that this project is indeed a very interesting project to work on.

“ The Hospital Doctor ”
Dr. Lin Gender : Male Age : 50 Occupation : Physiotherapist Location : Taipei , Taiwan
What Occupation will have this illness ? Occupational diseases related to the hands are commonly seen among many professions like Typists, chefs, construction workers and housewives who work with both of their hands for a long period of time. Any methods of treatment so far? The best and main treatment for this symptom is to rest the hand muscles. Because the hand muscles will repair themselves. Overworking an injured muscle, will only your make matters worst. When the muscles are beyond repair, you’ll be left with only the surgical solution. How to relieve the pain ? We always advise the patient to do hot compresses or electrotherapy and massage the hands. Normally, we would recommend patients to use hand protectors to fixate the hand. Preventing excessive movement which leads to pain.
17
“ The Sewing Worker
Ms. Wu Gender : Female Age : 52 Occupation : Stitcher Location : Taipei , Taiwan
Why do you need to wear hand protectors? I have been using my hands for a long time, causing pain in my hands, pain and even inability to work. In order to work, I must wear hand protectors to help my hands. Disadvantages of existing hand protectors? I have used several hand protectors that are not suitable for me. Apparently steel bars appear to be in alot of traditional protective gears. I have to work 8 hours a day, so wearing it makes my hands too stiff to the point of discomfort instead. How do you soothe your pain? If it is too painful, I will go to the hospital to look for the physical therapist who will perform electrotherapy. But the hospital is far away from my home and it takes too much of my time to travel. Its too troublesome!
18
Ideation Sketch & Prototype After understanding the illness and defining the patient's needs, I start to brainstorm new ideas for hand protectors. After the final sketch is determined, 1:1 prototype is made. Using ready-made parts from existing products for my prototype, I need to confirm the feasibility of my design.
19
Electronics & Final Model We cooperated with electrical engineering students in order to make our product come to live. In addition, We held discussions with a tailor on how to house the electrical wirings; which was rather challenging for traditional tailors to understand. After mutiple rounds of tweaking from different fields, we finally completed our working prototype with success.
20
Product Composition
1 Muscle Sensor Handicare monitors the use of hand muscles over a long period of time, such as over-tightening and excessive use of hand muscles, and the APP reminds users to relax the hand.
2 Electronic Module The vibration or electrotherapy electronic module is set at the area in pain, and can be disassembled and changed according to the user's needs to relieve the pain.
3
Air Pump Press the pump to inflate the air cushion in the protector which replaces the metal bar in the traditional protective gears. The pressure can be freely adjusted, and the weight is reduced.
21
HANDICARE Smart Wearable Hand Reliever
Handicare is designed for this disorder. This product is equipped with an electronic module for soothing pain, an inflatable air cushion for fixing the hand, and a muscle sensor to help understand the condition of the hand.
22
Product Appication
TIME TO RELAX !
The collected muscle data will be sent back to the APP. If your hands are overworked, the APP will automatically remind users to relax their hands to prevent the condition from deteriorating.
The vibration module or the electrotherapy module can be controlled via the module interface of the APP, and the intensity and frequency can be adjusted as desired.
23
Module charging box
Handicare is equipped with a charging box to charge the electronic modules. There is a magnetic adapter inside the box that can be assembled to power the box. The magnetic adapter can be connected to the micro USB charging cable. It also solves the inconvenience of normal wireless charging storage. The electronic modules can also be stored in the box, which is portable. The overall volume is convenient for storage.
24
“ We Care For Your Hands ” 25

RORO - CLEANER Wash Your Fruits In A Different Way RORO-CLEANER is a vegetable washing machine designed for the elderly. Elderlies with limited hand movements were worried that their fruits and vegetables are not washed thoroughly enough, hence i came up with a product that enables easier cleaning of vegetables for cooking.
27
28
29
& Found Problem Through research, we found that older people shared a common problem ; immobility of their hands which affects their daily activities. Most elderlies enjoy cooking their own food, but they always have problems cleaning vegetables leaf by leaf.
30
Observation The theme for this semester is universal design of the elderly. Before the case began, the professor required us to do a round of field research and see if there were any problems hidden in the daily lives of elderlies around us.
Defining The Problem I came to a senior community and saw a group of female senior citizens cooking together for the elderlies in the community. After asking, I found that some problems were plaguing them during the cooking process. Some aunties suffer from painful hands, thus washing vegetables is rather challenging for them. Therefore I started ideating on how could the vegetables be washed easily yet thoroughly clean.
31
“ The Professional Housewife ” Name : Ms.Wang Gender : Female Age : 55 Occupation : Housewife Location : Taipei , Taiwan Illness : KTPP, Hand Dermatitis Hobby : Cooking
Empathy Map THINK & FEEL As we get older, we must pay extra attention to our health. Nowadays, the origins of vegetables sold in the market are unclear. I don’t know how many pesticides are on them. When I wash vegetables, sometimes I don’t know if I washed them clean.
HEAR I discuss with the women in our community on how to wash vegetables. My friend shared that experts said soaking the veges in a basin of water for five minutes, and then scrubbing the pesticides with running water is the simplest and most effective method of washing vegetables.
Pain I am most worried about the condition of my hands. How can i clean the vegetables thoroughly?
SEE It is especially troublesome to wash vegetables in winter, because of the icy waters that makes it very uncomfortable. I have KTPP, Hand Dermatitis, thus the skin on my hands peel and grow blisters from too much washing.
SAY & DO No matter how i wash my vegetables, letting my family eat the fruits and vegetables at a peace of mind or cooking delicious and healthy meals for my family is the happiest things.
Gain I hope that my family can have a peace of mind when eating my fruits and vegetables

How to wash ?
Protect hands !
The first question is how to wash the dishes clean. After investigation, we found that even organic vegetable surfaces still carry some pesticides and hazardous substances. So how do you wash it ?
When patients with KKTP come into contact with water for a long period of time, their hands get red red from rashes . How can we let them wash their vegetables comfortably?
Finding a method According to the above survey, I have found that most elderly people have two troubles in washing vegetables. We are looking for a way to solve this problem based on these two questions.
33

A
Intuitive Cleanable Safe
Ozone is used to oxidize surface pesticides to achieve a cleaning effect, but it is doubtful because it may also destroy the surface of fruits and vegetables and allow pesticides to penetrate.

The surface pesticide is removed using the ultrasonic vibration principle. Although it is easy to use but the price is too expensive therefore difficult for most people to get it .
Integrated multi-wavelength spectral sensing technology, automatic flushing with water flow, users understand the degree of pesticide residue through APP. Too complicated for the elderly.
Product Analysis Before designing, the professor asked us to conduct a market analysis to understand the advantages and disadvantages of certain products in the market.
34
A
B
Development of Sketch My design is mainly divided into two series, A and B. The A series is designed without electricity, and the B series is designed with technology as the solution.
Definition After discussing with the professor, I decided to take the non-electrical powered design as my chosen direction, mainly because it allowes the elderly to use intuitively.
35
Modeling & Testing I started to make a 1:1 functional model in order to prove that the function of this design has a practical approach. Then take this model to do user interviews.
User Interview Ms. Chen Gender : Female Age : 56 Location : Taipei Your Experience? It seems to be a bit too big, but I think this design is good, it helps me save alot of troubles washing vegetables, so I can do other things.
My Mom Gender : Female Age : 53 Location : Taichung Your Experience? Every time I get off work, I have to cook for you. If I have this machine, I can save time in washing vegetables. I hope he can produce it quickly. But it is a bit too big.
Components In my prototype, I use single-way bearing parts so that the inner basket can be rotated when the handle is pressed down, and the handle will automatically jump when the press is completed.
36
A
B
Put in Vegetables & Add Water Put the fruits and vegetables into the RORO-cleaner and open the lid of the water inlet to add water. Vegetables should be soaked for at least 30 minutes to get rid of pesticides that is on the surface of vegetables.
37

C
D
Press the handle to allow the inner basket to spin quickly and pour the pesticide out of the vegetable surface. The design of this pressing handle allows elderly to easily press and improve the inconvenience of previous washing machines.
Open the Water Outlet Open the lid below to allow water to flow out. After repeating the B.C.D action two to three times, the raw vegetables are ready.

WHISPER Bionic Scenario Lamp Whisper tries to make the lighting of the lamp have a different scene. Whisper emulated the communication between nature, as if two birds stood on the branch whispering to each other. Adjusting one of it’s position creates a different relationship within.
42
43
Initial Idea Our professor asked us to collect light sources in nature. I thought: if I want to convert elements from nature into a lamp, must it be light ? I want to create a lamp with different relationships.
44
Ecology of Light The theme of this semester is Light, and the professor gave us different sub-themes. Such as the history of light, physics of light, ecology of light. I chose the ecology of light.
45
Product Analysis Before starting the design, the professor asked us to analyze the lamps in the market. Define a variety of adjectives for these luminaires for analysis, and find more people to help analyze with their own experience. Investigate to understand the advantages of good products, and then start designing. Intuitive to use

46
Chirping Together I chanced upon a scene when thinking about how to use light from ecology as a design concept for my lamp. That is, I saw birds chirping on the branches in the park. So i thpught whether I could turn this interaction into a light.
Reflection of Light I want to use the principle of mutual reflection between light and objects to match the scene of birds interacting. So I collected as many reference that uses this same principle .
47
Design Process Simplifying the organic shape of a bird and defining the appropriate shape. After sorting and combining, find the suitable shape.
After deciding on the final shape, make a 1:1 model to detect the appropriate size.
Create a 3D model and add detail. Make the final model with 3D printing.
The 3D printed objects are processed and polished to obtain the final refined model.
48
Adjustable light The way to adjust the intensity of the light for this lamp is different from most lamps in general. I want to change the strength of the reflection by moving the position of the light source. This will achieve the function of adjusting the intensity of the light.

54
Initial Idea This is a topic we discussed in the human-computer interaction workshop, that is smart phones are popular in life now, and we can record every detail very quickly. But are these only recorded in our mobile phones, not in our memories?
55
56
Why Exist ? Though we’re in today's increasingly technologically advanced era, analogy technologies still exist. And analog technology has a certain market, and some have even been redesigned just to preserve its advantages.
or
Advantages of Analog Technology This book“ The Revenge of Analog mentions digital technology to make the shortcomings of analog technology more attractive. Because these analogy technologies are expected and unique, they are irreplaceable.
57
Brainstorming Through group discussions and brainstorming, we define what the advantages of these analogous technologies are, using it as the basis for our design.
Defining Design Then define the target of our products and the main functions of Recall.

58
Modeling & Testing We used RFID technology, light sensitive resistor and motors to create a working model that was continuously tested.
59
Final Prototype After the test passed, we used 3D modeling to build the RECALL profile and print it out. Electronics were placed inside the housing to make the final prototype work.
60
Locked Box Couples each get a locked Recall. It is designed to keep the box locked in the normal state through a special mechanism design.
Registration and Pairing Recall has a APP, registered members can complete the pairing of the box with the phone. Information about Recall can be learned and recalled through the APP.
Pick Important Memories Type what you want to say to your loved ones , or pick an important photo to send it. However, it can only be sent once a day, so choose wisely.
61
Receive and print Recall will print the received text or photo sent from within the box.
Delete Memories When the file is printed to another box, the photo or text will be deleted from the phone.
Unlock Memories Only on a specific date, the two parties can put the boxes together to unlock the box. You will see what memories you have prepared for each other during then!
62
Recall uses digital technology to transform into irreplaceable analog technology, allowing people to slowly taste important memories in an era of complex information.

ECOGENIE NextDrive Connect App Ecogenie is a power management system. Also, Ecogenie supports automatic controlling of home appliances (Iot), and more. The HEMS Gateway Cube was developed and sold by NextDrive in 2017. The company provides easy-to-use solutions for home energy management. Built-in BLE, Wi-Fi and Wi-SUN communication modules, enables wireless connection to a home smart meter. Ecogenie is used to view power management sources such as purchasing and selling electric power and analyzing power usage . when needed, “electricity over-used” push notifications is sent to notify users. Also, Ecogenie supports automatic controlling of home appliances (Iot) , and more.
About Nextdrive Founded at 2013, NextDrive is a smart home company that simplifies energy management by combining the Internet of Things (IoT, known as the Internet of Things) with power technology. Our goal is to provide solutions. NextDrive is currently working on the Japanese market and working with Japanese power company to build the future’s power market.
68
Internship at Nextdrive: Ecogenie app Nextdrive found potential problems in the first version of Ecogenie and we want to make a revision. During my internship, I participated in this revision project. The revised content is mainly to enable the notification center to convey helpful and understandable messages. Hopefully, creating a notification experience that is lovable by users.
NotiďŹ cation 2.0
69
Interveiw About Notification The purpose of this phase is to explore User's various views on Notification. To summarize their usage habits and situations for Notification, and to find out their pattern of use, and to pick out Insights that can become a solution that will benefit the average Users.
After interviewing users, we understood their habits and preferences regarding how they would like to be notified (Notification experience.): # Most users will not allow push notifications at the beginning # Once the APP properties are known, the user will open the push notification again. # Users find it annoying when the app pushes too many irrelevant notifications, which, will ultimately result in them deleting the App. # Most users will find ways to eliminate the red dot in the notification. # Only when users receive guidance or useful information through these notifications, will they be willing to turn on these alerts
70
Research Reference After interviewing and arriving at the above insights, I proceed on to collect other Applications who provides positive Notifications as case studies. Specifically looking into how these examples build synergy with users through notifying them.
App 01: Cluster
Asking At Appropriate Times In previous versions, the first step in creating a new space in Cluster was to add photos. That meant we asked for photos access right after they hit “Create Cluster.” This resulted in the user granting photo access 67% of the time. We decided to move photo uploading back a few steps until they were a little more aware of what Cluster was, and made them actually tap on the camera icon and “Choose Photos” before we asked for access. Asking users for photos access after they tapped a camera and “Choose Photos” increased the acceptance rate from 67% to 89% .
71
Cluster
Educational Pre-permission Overlays When asking for Contacts access, Cluster wanted to do a little more educating, and the standard system dialog didn’t give them enough room or flexibility to fully explain what was going on, so they built their own that let them include an image. First they showed users a dialog about why Cluster needed the access and gave them the choice to use the address book, otherwise enter contact info manually themselves. Using pre-permissions dialogs made the “Don’t Allow” problem almost disappear. It was exceptionally rare that a user didn’t give us access at a system level when asked.
72
Unique Ui To Convince Users Nearly every APP sends push notifications, but innovative APPs get the most subscribers. Take a look at the picture above where Walmart requires its user interface to allow for a difference from Timehop. Walmart insists on a simple default design, while Timehop cleverly uses special images and colors to make their requirements warmer and more attractive.
Remind User Where To Re-open When users switch off push notification permission, the APP should remind the user where to switch it on for better engagement. Facebook Messenger practices this by appearing at appropriate timings. The step-by-step approach is to educate Users how to turn on notifications from their own mobile phone’s operating system when the users wants to open the push notification again (most users don't know).
73
The Notification Center Is Mostly Presented In The Timeline In most of the APP's notification centers, notifications for events are usually presented in a timeline format. Usually presented in a clear and straightforward style, including an image or logo to represent the event, in addition to the title and time of the event.

C
Usability Testing We did three prototypes of the Notification Centers for user testing, enabling multiple users to evaluate product usability. Through Analyzing the user's behavior and feelings, we got the most appropriate solution for Ecogenie.
A
The A version of the notification center is presented in a timeline style with a concept similar to Facebook's notification center, which in turn divides the notification nature into Alarm and notification.
B
The B version is similar to the A version. The only difference is that this version does not separate the notifications. All notifications is be presented on the same page.
C
The C version is the same as the original Ecogenie notification center. It is mainly presented as a list of device classifications. When a notification appears, a small red dot will appear to remind the user.

I would like to see the relationship between several notifications. I think the way version C is presented cannot be accepted by me. I need to go in and see it one by one, which makes me feel so troublesome!
At first glance, when I saw the C version, I thought it was a good fit for me, because I could find the device I wanted to see from the category, but after the tests of A and B, I still feel that these two are more intuitive and easy to use.
The A and B version of the notification center is very similar to other communication APPs, because I am used to the time-line notification center from other APPs, so I think both A and B suits me.
Most Users Choose The A Version After going through interviews with ten testers, the A version was obviously favored by users. The main reason is that most users have become accustomed to the inter-axis notification. The concept of the software notification can be picked up quickly from the Timeline.
