Josh Howard My name is Josh Howard and I am from Orange, Texas right near the Texas/Louisiana border. I am a senior Environmental Design undergraduates student at Texas A&M, Class of 2021. From a young age, I have used different creative mediums such as sketching, woodworking and writing to express my ideas. Upon discovering architecture, I immediately saw it as the perfect interestion between creativity and functionality. Attending Texas A&M has helped me to refine my passion for design. In my free time, I enjoy being active with sports such as tennis and swimming, listening to music, watching movies, and spending time with friends. My design philosphy has always viewed architecture as a way to better the lives of occupants while creating a sustainable and more equitable world for all. I am excited to be a part of designing the future!

Team Introduction

Jonathan Latta Hi! My name is Jonathan Latta and I’m from Frisco, Texas, just north of Dallas. I’m a senior Environmental Design undergraduate student at Texas A&M University, Class of 2021.

As I was growing up I spent most of my time in a workshop on various projects including longbows, skateboards, and electric guitars, I developed a love of creating things that has transferred to the rest of my life. I enjoy listening to music, playing my guitar, and singing. In addition to architecture, I am very interested in thomistic philosopy, my Catholic faith, and the culinary arts. I love finding new lenses to look at the world around me, whether it be in metaphysics, theology, cuisine, and/or the people I encounter in the day to day.

I’m hardworking, flexible, and eager to see where life takes me!

Project Brief

Introduced as an exploration of the future of telemedicine, this project asks students to design

a healthcare facility specifically suited for the practice of telemedicine. The COVID-19 pandemic forced many providers to suddenly switch to telehealth practices, while also exposing how unprepared many facilities were to do so. This project seeks to provide a space which is conducive to practicing to healthcare virtually, as this will only become more popular in the future.

The projects forces students to consider what spaces, infrastructure, and environment will

be needed to help the providers practice virtual care most efficiently while also thinking about the experiences of both the providers and the patients. Each student group was allowed to decide if their project would serve only virtual or both virtual and in-person patients, as well as create their own business model for the facility.

An initial list of required spaces was given, which students could add to:

Telehealth consult rooms

Physician space

Practitioner Space

Staff Respite Space

Data Center Space

Central Monitoring

Command and Control space

• Parking

Ultimately, this project challenges students to design a flexible, adaptable space which provides

a suitable and effective environment for providers to practice telemedicine. Students must research their typology and use their creative intution to design solutions for the problems that the future of healthcare faces.

Project Scenario

Telehealth Trends

The COVID-19 pandemic rapidly increased the adoption of Telehealth systems as a means of care across all healthcare needs. Primary care, urgent care, and even patient monitoring have all been forced into virtual options with COVID-19 patients requiring the attention of healthcare professionals. The trend of going virtual is expected to remain at the current demand or grow up to 650%, depending on the source. Increasingly, architects have had to adapt existing spaces or design new spaces for the implementation of telemedicine that provide the same quality of care as inperson visits. In our exploration, we each developed a proposal for a telemedicine provider suite as a design charette before this proposal. The image on top is Jonathan Latta’s “TeleXX Virtual Care Hub - Healthcare from Home” backyard hut. Telehealth providers can have this 30x15 ft shed in their backyard and use it as an office as well as laboratory space for simple pharmacalogical and medical testing needs. Pictured below, Josh Howard’s charette involved designing a working space and environment that was perfectly suited for practitioners of telehealth. His proposal, the Brazos Health Center, implemented strategies such as daylighting, biophilia, collaborative work spaces, and more.

PARK BEND DR.

PROVIDER BUILDINGS DATA CENTER

Centrum Telehealth Center for Austin, Texas, USA Josh Howard & Jonathan Latta

Introduction

16

Our project is situated in Austin, Texas about 12 miles north of the Texas State

Capitol building. More precisely, it is tucked between St. David’s North Austin Medical Center, Austin Community College: Northridge Campus, Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park, and a few suburban neighborhoods. This location lends to a unique opportunity for the site to serve medical professionals, college students, cyclists/ hikers, and families. Considering these things, we have designed a project to serve all these demographics.

The site is organized into two different design typologies; the northmost building

on the site is the data center, providing IT and logistics support to the rest of the project. Surrounding this are six provider buildings that provide telehealth services to patients and consumers. They are designed in a way to have the best virtual healthcare services for the Austin area as well as any area with good internet connection no matter the distance.

Access to the site is twofold. Park Bend Dr. connects the site to Texas Loop 1, a

major thoroughfare connecting North and South Austin. To the east of the site, there is an existing paved bike/bike trail with a direct route to Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park and the surrounding neighborhoods. Around the site, there are hike/bike trails connecting each of the buildings to eachother for full bicycle/pedestrian circulation.
