OUIL504 About the Author – Douglas AdamsSketchbook development
After doing some somewhat extensive research on Douglas Adams I felt I had given myself another opportunity on thinking of new approaches rather than recycling pervious ideas. I made a mind up on these new themes which branched off into a few other different notions.
I quickly decided that due to my interests the music theme could really work as I found out he was a keen lover of most music and played guitar himself, owning 26 guitars in the process as well as getting to play on stage with Pink Floyd. I Also had a obscure desire to use the quirky trait he had which was he was obsessed with taking baths and I thought this would have been interesting to explore through ideas and design.
I settled on doing the 5 prints option instead of the book because I felt aesthetically what I had in mind would be suited better through the prints. I also just didn’t feel like tackling the challenge of the book either which is kind of out of laziness on my part. So these are my first set of thumbnails, which include the visual element about taking baths.
This page includes a few examples of how I work with cartoon like faces and really enjoy it, I find it somehow therapeutic. I attempted a few cartoon like Douglas Adams which came off ok but he has a hard face to characterize in a simple way.
This page shows a couple of sketches that are more on the visual metaphor/editorial side of thinking which I enjoy doing often. So it may be interesting to create almost editorial like images again for my prints.
This was about working with aspect of how the workload got on top of him, much like me and I did keep thinking about certain parallels between me and him such as the music and how we both get overwhelmed or at least it seems that way at times.
These are a few more examples of cartoon Douglas’ hence the mini title I gave ‘ a deluge of Douglas’ ‘
This is the final page however there will be more development to do for sure. Things will also be dictated by how my prints go and how successful certain methods work for me.
