Elizabeth Blackadder spent considerable time in her painting process concerned with how objects would appear both individually, and in relation to one another. This carefully considered relationship between object and space is apparent throughout her oeuvre, and in Still Life with Red Chillies is evident in the perfect balance of shape and colour between the individually placed items on the red tabletop.
The vibrant red chillies in the foreground reference Blackadder’s continual interest in plants, flowers and the organic world, while the beautifully decorated Japanese box and delicate ceramic bowl indicate a continued interest in Japanese art and culture – Blackadder was travelling back and forth to Japan often at the time this picture was painted.
Still Life with Red Chillies also evidences Blackadder’s confident forays away from the delicate watercolour of her works on paper, towards the rich tonal hues displayed in many of her works on canvas. The deep red of the tabletop, rather than swallowing the red of the chillies, or pink of the bowl, serves instead as a platform from which the objects are separated by meticulous shadow, and subtle changes of hue.

Jane Simone Bussy was a French artist who spent time each year at Charleston and exhibited her still-life paintings with Lefevre Gallery in London. She was the daughter of artist Simon Bussy and his wife Dorothy, who was the elder sister of writer and founding member of the Bloomsbury Group, Lytton Strachey. Her work was included in the show Sixty Years On at The Bloomsbury Workshop, in 1998.
Bussy is best known for her elegant still-lifes of pastel hued flowers and ripe fruit. Anemones presents a composition often returned to by the artist of a glass or ceramic vase of flowers superimposed in front of a patterned table cloth and textured background. The result is a work which encapsulates the joy of a vase of fresh cut flowers.

Fry was a British figurative painter whose exploration of light and colour was at the heart of his practice. A prolific traveller in search of inspiration, Fry’s work was inspired by many foreign landscapes, from Italy to Morocco, Malta, and India. India became a central source of inspiration; a place much loved by the artist who gained inspiration from the landscape, culture, and the people he met there.
Often Fry's observation of the natural world is infiltrated by memory and imagination, resulting in somewhat dream-like scenes, reminiscent of hazy days under the hot sun with vibrant swathes of colour.
Fry was born in Essex, in 1927, the cousin of Roger Fry and Howard Hodgkin. He was taught at the Downs School by Maurice Field and W.H. Auden, and at Bryanston by Elizabeth Muntz and Donald Potter. His formal artistic education began at Edinburgh College of Art, and proceeded to Camberwell, where he was taught by William Coldstream, Victor Pasmore and Laurence Gowing. Fry then went on to teach at Camberwell, and subsequently at Bath Academy, where his fellow tutors included Terry Frost, Peter Lanyon, William Scott, and Howard Hodgkin.
