trafficking. Adult sex trafficking, adult labor trafficking, child sex trafficking, and child labor trafficking. There is no “look” for a traf- ficker. The scariest part is that it doesn’t always take force, fraud, or co- ercion. Children will be children. Traffickers know how to establish relationships and take advantage of vulnera- bility. It is vital that we are aware of the warn- ing signs and educate ourselves on what to do if put in a dangerous sit- uation. Parents need to be aware of the applications their children use on their smartphones. Parents need to talk to their children about the impor- t a n c e o f know- i n g t h e i r sur - round- i n g s . Adults need to k n o w the red f l a g s . Below are a few offered by the Texas Attorney General: There are several red flags that someone is being forced into labor trafficking, including: Third-party control of schedule and social in- teraction Evidence of violence: bruises, swelling, scar- ring, etc. Works excessively long or unusual hours Living where the individual works Living in an area that is not zoned for residential Transported to and from work by employer Housing, food, and hy- giene products all being

The Real Cost Of Human Trafficking According to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s websitre, Human trafficking is modern-day slavery. It is the exploitation of men, women, and children for forced labor or sex by a third-party for profit or gain. Texas is on the forefront of combating this hideous crime. In 2016 — in one of his first major initiatives — Attorney General Paxton formed the Human Trafficking and Transnational/Organized Crime Section (HTTOC), tasked with combating human trafficking across our state. According to the Texas Attorney General there were 234,000 victims of human trafficking in the Lone Star State at any given time. Of that, seventy nine thousand victims of youth and minor sex trafficking at any given time. furthermore, there are twenty five million people enslaved worldwide. Over the next fews weeks we at the Lone Star Shopper Shopping News intend to interview various law enforcement officials in East Texas about Human traffick

ing. Meanwhile, what can the residents of East Texas do about this very real problem? If the situation is an emergency or you believe someone is in immediate danger, call 911 and alert the authorities. Tell them you think it may be human trafficking, so that it can be routed to the proper investigators. Be sure to share all actionable information you have — including descriptions of cars and people, when and where you saw the conduct, and take a picture if you can safely do so. After contacting law enforcement, call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888- 3737-888. You can also text “Help” or “Info” to 233733. Additionally, you can reach the hotline by email: Report@PolarisProject.org. Pay close attention to the people in your neighborhood and community. Report behaviors that might be evidence of human trafficking. Call as soon as possible after you make the observations. The fresher the information, the more likely law enforcement can take action. Dear Dave, We’re debt-free except for our home, and we’ll have our fully-fund- ed emergency fund of three to six months of expenses, we’ve agreed on six months’ worth, saved up by the end of February. We’re also setting aside a little each month to buy a newer car with cash lat- er. We’re about $5,000 from our car fund goal, but my husband is getting impatient. He wants us to go ahead a finance the remainder, since it’s a relatively small amount. He has tried to justify this by mentioning that you don’t seem to have a problem with people borrowing money to buy a house. Could you explain the difference? Lana Dear Lana, Okay, first things first. I don’t like debt of any kind. I don’t really like borrowing for a house, but I’m not unreason- able. I tolerate mort- gage loans, as long as people use a 15-year, fixed rate mortgage, with payments that are no more than a fourth of their monthly takehome pay. A house is often the largest pur- chase in a person’s life, and one most people can’t achieve based solely on saving. I still recommend, however, setting aside as much as possible for a down payment before taking out a mortgage. Here’s the thing. Cars go down in value, while traditional homes gen- erally increase in value substantially over the years. Plus, you can get an absolutely great, pre-owned car for $10,000 to $15,000 dol- lars. This is an amount which, in my mind, is doable over the course of several months through determined saving and living on a budget. Depending on where you live, a good home can cost 10 to 20 times that much. The best way to build wealth and have a se- cure financial life is to stay away from debt. This means getting out of mortgage debt as quickly as possible, too. You’re never going to win with money if you can’t learn to delay LEARNING TO SAY NO

pleasure. Everyone has that lit- tle kid inside them, and that little kid wants everything he or she wants right now. Your husband is asking a normal question, but he’s dangerously close to letting that imma- ture little kid out. It happens to all of us once in a while, but we have to grow to a point as adults where we tell that little kid no! —Dave * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. Strawberries And Honey Make A Great Pair

(NAPSA)—Eaten out of hand as a snack, or sweetened with honey as a dessert, strawberries can brighten meals and add a healthy dose of nutrition. Besides being delicious, strawberries are a good source of vitamin C, fiber and antioxidants. Like strawberries, honey can play a part in a healthy diet. Honey provides a rich sweet flavor and is a natural source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in small amoun ts; and all at just 64 calories per tablespoon. Honey Strawberry Chiffon Pie is a surprisingly light dessert that combines the fresh taste of fruit with the richness of honey. Honey’s distinct flavor shines through and you may be surprised to learn that there are 300 different varieties of honey in the United States alone, each with its own distinct flavor. They range in color from pale, almost white sage to the extremely dark buckwheat—and the flavors are just as varied. Single varietal honeys result from honey bees gathering nectar from the same type of flowers. Author and honey expert, Gene Opton, loves to search out local honeys at farmers’ markets. She writes that “some of my favorites are the work of artisan producers—small suppliers who harvest only in specifically designated areas and focus on single- flower honeys.” For this recipe, she recommends an orange blossom honey, but why not try experimenting with a few varietals to find your favorite. For more recipes and information on the many sources and types of honey visit the National Honey Board’s Web site at www.honey.com. If you’re looking for some great drink recipes, order the National Honey Board’s new honey beverage leaflet. Send a self-addres sed, stamped, business-sized envelope to: National Honey Board-Dept. By Anthony ONeal I don’t know about y’all, but I am ready to crush some goals this year! Maybe you don’t feel so ready, and that’s okay. Maybe you’re ready, but you’re worried your high schooler isn’t. Don’t stress. No matter where you find yourself at the beginning of the year, it’s never too late to get on track and set yourself (and your teen) up for success. The most important thing you and your teen need to do is: Have. A. Plan. Here’s how I break down the goal-setting process in a way that not only helps me plan for the whole year, but also helps me create positive change in myself that lasts way after I’ve hit my goals. • The Vision Before there can be a goal, there has to be a big-picture vision. Encourage your teen to think about what kind of person they want to become and what they want to achieve as they learn and grow in their lifetime. Thinking through these things will give your teen the why behind their goals. Their why will really keep them motivated! ¶ The Goals Goals are what we set in order to help us work toward the vision. All goals should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-sensitive. For example, “save money for college” is vague, but “save $1,000 by graduation” is specific. It’s driven by a deadline and makes sense for your teen. • The Habits Help your teen build some smaller, consistent habits that help them achieve their goals. A habit for the example above could be setting aside a certain amount of money from each paycheck. That way, once they reach their goal, they’ve already formed a pattern that will help them stick with their smart choices over time. Boom! Now it’s time to start putting the goal-setting process into action! If you have a student in the family, chances are that college––or at least thinking about college––is somewhere in their near future. If they’re interested in going to college (without student loans), here are a few examples of goals they could set for this year that will help them get ready for that big step. • 9th graders should: Get solid grades by having healthy study habits and turning assignments in on time. Research three colleges that fit with the careers that interest them. Meet with their guidance counselor at least twice (this goes for all four years of high school). • 10th graders should: Consider getting a tutor or taking a prep class for the ACT or SAT tests. Research job shadowing or internship opportunities. Research scholarships every day. • 11th graders should: Take the ACT or SAT multiple times to boost their score. Make a list (resumé) of their grades, awards, organizations, volunteer time, and clubs (colleges look at this stuff!). Spend at least an hour every day looking for scholarships. • 12th graders should: Apply to the top colleges on their list. Plan to visit their top three colleges before making a final choice. Look for scholarships every day and apply for as many as possible. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)! With some solid habits and goals, your teen will have a successful year––no matter what educational or career path they choose. Major props to you for supporting them and helping them reach their full potential. Now, go kill it in 2020, you guys! • About Anthony ONeal Since 2003, Anthony has helped hundreds of thousands of students make smart decisions with their money, relationships, and education. There is a growing trend toward greener burial options in the United States. According to the National Funeral Directors Association, nearly 54 percent of Americans are considering a green burial and 72 percent of cemeteries report an increased demand for green burials. Thousands of people have already reserved trees for themselves. “Making plans and establishing guidelines for the end of your life means that loved ones don’t have to guess about your wishes and you can give them the experience you’d like them to have when you pass,” explained Sandy Gibson, CEO of Better Place Forests. “At Better Place Forests, we talk to people every day who find peace in knowing they have created a beautiful experience for their loved ones by selecting a family tree.” Beyond providing a more beautiful final resting place, choosing a tree in one of these memorial forests means you are leaving a legacy of conservation. The company performs spreading also actively manage the land to ensure that it’s less susceptible to forest fires. They hire forestry experts to keep the trees healthy and the forests free of invasive species. In addition, more trees are planted in areas in need for every tree a customer chooses. Thousands of trees have already been planted in forests devastated by the California wildfires.
