Why Music Education is Important
More and more we see public schools are being subjected to reduced funding. One of the first things that is targeted for budget cuts is music education. Schools around the country are having their music programs cut to the bones, leaving little to no funding for qualified music instructors or equipment. Although many other school programs such as physical education, mathematics, science, or English, generally do not see budget cuts, it is almost to be expected that music programs will be slashed to pieces. Music education is important for development, and this can be proven.
Music Students Have Higher SAT and ACT Scores: While it is no secret that music education creates a more well-rounded education for students, a study conducted by the University of Kansas showed that students who were a part of a strong music program scored higher in standardized testing. The average score of students who participated in music programs was on average 22 percent higher than students who did not participate in a music program. This 22 percent increase, as the researchers suggest, was due to the fact that music programs force students to develop attentiveness to detail. This increased attention to detail allows students to have higher concentration levels, which in turn helps them perform better on tests.
Increased Self Confidence: Music programs help students develop confidence. Students involved in music programs become more adept at public speaking because they are used to being in front of large audiences. By preforming in front of others, music students build their confidence in ways that they otherwise wouldn't be able to. Increased confidence is directly linked to happiness and mental health, giving music students a healthier emotional life.
Music Students Have Higher Spatial/Temporal Skills: Another added benefit of music programs, is that they help students develop spatial and temporal recognition skills. These skills are developed from visualizing the different elements involved in making music, and then applying them to the real world. These are the same skills used when attempting to solve complex puzzles or preform higher level mathematics. Music is a great way to help students develop their cognitive abilities. Music education is important for school programs because it develops better students. By increasing their confidence, students will be more likely to have better mental health. By increasing student’s cognitive abilities, students will be able to perform better in the arts and sciences, leading to higher grades and increased likelihood of college acceptance. If nothing else, there is a proven link between high standardized test scores and music education. For this reason alone, it is safe to say that music education is important.
