Two families enjoy a meal together in the narrow alley between their kitchens. A group of kids does homework on the porch of a shop,

The result of informal development - a process of constant negotiation between people‘s interests - life in Pingshan village differs fundamentally from life in the formally planned city. Here,

one finds a unique type of collectivity: programmatic overlapping, blurring of borders, mixing of private and public spheres, unexpected social interaction. Domestic activity, commercial use, and public life are superposed onto each other by this extreme condition of urban congestion. The atmosphere on street level is composed of a multiplicity of simultaneous action and sound. In the narrow, constraining spatial condition of the urban village, the street becomes the stage for collectivity, a shared space for everday life to unfold. Only a slight change in height may divide the most public from the most intimate of scenes. Large garage shutters mediate between the inside of homes and the outside, regulating the degree of connection between private and public. Everyday objects and furniture act as

The site of Herdern is today closed off and isolated from the city. Looking at this isolated state condition from a further point of view, it becomes obvious that - while being fenced off from the city in the norththe largest part of it is confined by the field of train tracks that lies adjacent to it. It is this infrastructural connection that determines the location of the site. Along the perimeter of the tracks a territory of logistic infrastructures has formed, the location of each site solely determined by the access to the tracks. Today, rail cargo traffic in the city has been largely substituted by combined cargo traffic, the rail system used mainly to connect distribution centers strategically placed throughout the Swiss territory. Although highly sophisticated, Zurich’s rail system lacks the flexibility and efficiency to adapt to the frequency of contemporary urban life/meet the demands of contemporary urban life. As logistic activity along the perimeter declines, most connecting tracks have been left disused. On the individual scale from the inner city, this link to the global railway network creates internal borders and disruption as one moves through the city. As David Harvey argues: „Motion cannot occur in a vacuum. We need to shift from a visualization of value in motion that is ungrounded anywhere to seeing as it creates geographies of cities, transport networks, forms agrarian landscapes.“

Anamorphous maps of Switzerland show how its territory is continuously compressed in proportion to railway travel time. The regime of time creates a new geography in which the two points - that of departure and arrival - become the only identifiable spatial markers in the system. Increasing speeds in transportation and communication between points lead to a compression of the space between them, ultimately leading to its loss of identity. As the space between the points - the traditional traveling space - was destroyed, those points moved into each other’s immediate vicinity: one might say that they collided. They lost their old sense of local identity, formerly determined by the spaces between them. The urban void in the center of Zurich bears witness to the compression of time and space and its spatial effects. Its single reason to exist is the connection between points in a global system, neglecting all space in between. Space has been subordinated to the value of measured time.

TIME > SPACE

FRAGMENTATION

What has brought connection and proximity on a global scale divides the city on a local scale, producing an urban geography of discontinuity and fragmentation along its edge - an internal periphery. Seen from within the void, this periphery appears in a different light. The etymological meaning of the word - „a carrying around“ - suggests a potent reading of the city: through movement. The word periphery is activated and conceived as an action rather than a condition. Peripheral movement becomes the primary instrument to address the territory.

PERIPHERAL MOVEMENT

The peripheral territory of the train tracks forms a fragmented environment shaped by efficiency of a global transport network. Measuring time between points in space makes up the fundamental mechanism to support this paradigm. All space between these points - where trains do not stopbecomes Continuousirrelevant.movement at once eliminates and multiplies points of departure and arrival, creating its own sense of time and space. Along the perimeter all space becomes equally important, counteracting the hierarchy between center and periphery. The center becomes a continuous line. At the threshold between the city and the void, identity is created through movement itself.

SYNTHESIS

VANTAGE LINE The steam train, a relic of the 19th century has left its mark on the land. Its invention marks the first moment in which the relationality of space and time is fundamentally shifted, setting in motion a global acceleration which is Paul Virilio pictures as following: „The straight line prefigures high speed; the rectitude of the mark between two poles, between two cities, anticipated the tracing of high-speed vehicles, automobile tire tracks, as well as the trail of jet exhaust gasses in the sky. The strategic route, through its shortcut, expresses the first moment in a contraction of the world.“ The continuous space of the rail tracks appears as an immense linear void that cuts through the landscape into the heart of the city, connecting it to all of Switzerland and beyond. It fundamentally differs from the remaining city as it is geared towards one singular performance: linear movement. Passing through all of Zurich’s urban spheres, a continuous vantage line emerges creating a complete panorama of the city’s condition.

from peri “round about” + pherein “to carry” from Greek peripheria “circumference, outer surface” literally “a carrying around”

NEW TRAIN At 1.3km length - equaling Bahnhofstrasse - a new train acts like a moving street, a performative device of the city serving every point along its edge from the very center at Hauptbahnhof to its outer limits and back, time and time again. Moving at a constant speed of 5km per hour with no schedule, it challenges time as the determinant parameter of efficient transport. The train itself defines places as it moves, accommodating people, goods and infrastructure to support a variety of events. Thus, the fragmented territories that it passes are unified in one continuous gesture that is materialized in a smooth asphalt surface providing the minimum space needed on the edge and then blending into its immediate built context. Inserting itself between the two realms of the city and the void, the project aims to unite the city by counteracting forces of centralization - transforming what is now a landscape of time into a landscape of Theevents.programs contained in the train are typical programs found in the city, now set in motion. They contribute to the redistribution of the city that will densify at the edge, generating new vacancies in todays privileged areas in the center.

READING THE CITY PERIPHERE (v.)

As the main point of arrival and departure, the main station asserts itself as the most central point in the city, its value increasing exponentially to the city’s radial growth and the distance to its periphery.

The value of each point in the city is therefore determined by its distance to the center, resulting in a hierarchy of space and uses that can be measured along the vector of the rail tracks. Workplaces, income, population density and recreational areas are increasingly separated in the city in which centralization acts as the main force that drives its disaggregation.
