Precision Machined Component

CNC Machining as Manufacturing Tools CNC machining centers (Computer Numerical Control) have existed for a long time and now have become the workhorse in many manufacturing environments. Able to exchange a variety of tools through the use of automatic tool changers, and controlled by means of precision ball screw drive to all axles of the machine, such machine tools are capable of performing highly complex work very rapidly compared to manual operation of the machine. Machining centers, not to be confused with other types of CNC equipment, such as mills and lathes are available in horizontal and vertical spindle styles. Horizontal machining centers typically style will provide a table 4’th rotary axis (either in position or in more complex cases, a complete rotation axis), while the vertical machining centers often have the function of 4'th axis as an option. In general, designed for milling, drilling, boring and tapping functions to form raw materials such as steel or aluminum finished parts, machining centers can be found in a variety of sizes from as small as a drill press to very large styles drilling machine. These machine tools with complex computer console that are programmable and once programmed these machines work from start to finish without operator intervention. With the high levels of computing power available machining centers today, these machine tools are capable of producing a wide variety of component parts to very large parts for stamping or molding die. Very complex physical characteristics such as a spiral strip, the complex mold contours and cavities, thread milling, back boring, and a host of other operations can be performed with a little creative programming. Capable of machining with continuous movement along the cutting path, intricate and complex surfaces can be machined that would be almost impossible to make use of hand with a manual rotary table, indexer or sinusoidal block. Positional accuracy inherent within the machine tool enables high precision positioning and the mixture of complex surfaces that would not be available without much difficulty and special tools manual machining environment. Therefore, these types of machine tools lend themselves to the realization of works prototyping and production work. Programmable spindle speeds and the ability to easily vary the speed of the cutting tool is also another important factor to be built in CNC machining. Setting the spindle speed is rapidly through the program

to the best speeds and feeds for a given cutting tool are easily maintained in a constant cutting speed recommended for the cutting tool in the spindle. Most CNC machining centers are equipped with the floods, fog, or through the spindle cooling functions that allow the cutting tool to receive much needed cooling to maintain the proper temperature for the cutting tool while in cutting. Tool wear as a result of excess heat can be disastrous for the whole life of the cutting tool and the resulting surface finish produced on the work piece. Due to the inherent reliability, consistency and repeatability, CNC machining centers typically run on the plant floor as a group of machines operated by a single operator loading and unloading machine while checking parts quality end of the piece that comes out of the machine. Machine tools are available that have advanced autoloaders hand, unloaders and inspection probes can further reduce the need for a machine operator to intervene in the machining process creating an unattended machining environment.
