Specialty Petroleum products and minerals In the area of metallurgy the terms mineral oils, petroleum base oils are used interchangeably. The presence of oils in metal working system can be an advantage or a hindrance depending on the source and in which the oil containing fluids occurs. Petroleum / coolants provide lubrication properties / antiwear required for both tooling and production of the work piece. They provide good protection against oxidation and are considered one of the more trouble -free types of cutting fluids. Its limitations are higher costs, removal, smoke and fire hazards and limited tool life. Other sources of petroleum oils found in the work systems of metals can be attributed to the leakage of lubrication systems of machine tools. When this happens, the oils generated are called oil traps. Mix Aromatics Solvents Unfortunately, oil traps that are generated as a result of petroleum oil based hydraulic oil and gear oils can pose maintenance, environmental issues and performance manufacturer. In recent years, the disposal of fluids cutting has been a problem that often affects the choice of cutting fluid additives and types of fluids used. In some cases, customers have requested mineral oil free systems, but in doing so have limited its ability to adequate lubrication supplied to the tool as well as the limit of its ability to produce acceptable products. Facts vs. myths about the use of hydrocarbons found in liquid metals Myth 1 - Mineral oil content of cutting fluids will help to increase the VOC in my effluent. The term "VOC" refers to "volatile organic compounds". These are organic compounds that have high enough vapor pressures under normal conditions to significantly vaporize and enter atmosphere. Common sources of VOCs include solvents, fuels and petroleum distillates, such as gasoline, kerosene, etc. Also, formaldehyde and primary amines that are emitted from some chemical biocide and corrosion inhibitors, which can also contribute to VOC. Fact 1 - Mineral oils used in metalworking coolants are high flash Oakite Chemetall , petroleum oils that do not provide a significant increase in VOC if used appropriately . VOC is attributed to fluid -based cutting oil should be determined by EPA test method prescribed. This method is designed to detect any organic compounds with high vapor pressure. Such components are found in industrial solvents, petroleum fuel components, components of some grades of lubricating oil (hydraulic, gear oils or compressor) with components biocides inhibitors and rust.

VOC load was observed with oil -based cutting fluids oil will be insignificant compared with the volatile organic compounds that can be produced through oil traps. Oil traps can contain not only the residual lubricating oil leaks from the machine, but also on the RP , fats, oils, additional process related items provided to the operation. Oils & Allied Mixed Hydrocarbons Myth 2 - Mineral oils are more difficult to remove the water-soluble synthetic. Some manufacturers may state that since synthetic cutting fluids are water soluble and contain no mineral oils, that its waste treatment possibility is better on petroleum products. Disposal costs for any type of metalworking fluids - mineral oil based or water - base can be expensive depending on the requirement of municipal water and chemistry. If the installation cannot treat waste products on site, and must have products hauled away for disposal, the surcharge will be applied on the basis of free mineral oil content. Much of this is based on regional and municipal needs. Synthetic cutting fluids are true solutions and the ability to make additives strip the water phase of these products very difficult. In most cases, will have to be added to the effluent in order to remove the organic additives polymeric agents highly specific and expensive. Fact emulsions 2 - Micro GARDOCOOL such as C 9157 and C 9158 GARDOCOOL and synthetic materials such as semi GARDOCOOL C 9127 waste can be easily treated by a simple acid cleavage mechanism . Similar to conventional soluble oils . Since most of the additives are oil-soluble , they can be easily broken out in an acidic environment. MW oil fluids containing waste may be treated by conventional methods.
