CARAT SIMPLY PUT Carat weight is the size of a diamond HOW MUCH IS ONE CARAT AND HOW IS IT RELATED TO DIAMONDS? One carat is equal to 0.2 grams, about the same weight as a paperclip. Diamonds and other gemstones are weighed in metric carats. Don’t confuse carat with karat, as in “18K gold,” which refers to gold purity. HOW DOES THE CARAT SYSTEM WORK? A carat is divided into 100 points. For example, a 50-point diamond weighs 0.50 carats. But two diamonds of equal weight can have very different values depending on the other members of the Four C’s: clarity, color and cut. The majority of diamonds used in fine jewelry weigh one carat or less. HOW IMPORTANT ARE CARAT MEASUREMENTS? Because even a fraction of a carat can make a considerable difference in cost, precision is crucial. In the diamond industry, weight is often measured to the hundred thousandths of a carat, and rounded to a hundredth of a carat. Diamond weights greater than one carat are expressed in carats and decimals. (For instance, a 108 point stone would be expressed as 1.08 cts.)

JOSH’S INSIDE INFO about

CARATS Why are larger stones priced exponentially more? A 2Ct diamond is usually not twice the price as a 1Ct diamond, but rather it is much more. This is because a 2ct diamond is much more rare than a 1Ct, making it much more valuable. Is there any way to save money, while still having the appearance of a larger stone? Yes! If you want a larger stone, (for example a 2Ct stone), but can’t afford it, you can buy four 50pt stones each and it will give the illusion of 2Ct stone. What is the Best Bang for my Buck? No matter what the Carat weight of the stone may be, the best value can be attained through a diamond in the ranges of G-H color, and VS2-SI1 clarity. Why are Round Diamonds priced higher than other shapes? Round Diamonds are priced higher, given all other factors are the same, due to fact of when cutting a Round Diamond, you lose the most Rough Carat Weight of any shape. Keep in Mind One important piece of information to think about is that a 1.25Ct diamond will look much bigger on someone with a size 5 finger than a size 9. Keep this in mind when deciding what factors are most important to you.

GREAT TIP: Try to find a 1.70-1.80Ct stone where the depth percentage makes the stone look like a 2Ct, because you are only paying the price of 1.70Ct. It is thus possible to have a diamond of a lower carat weight to appear larger than a diamond with a larger carat weight, due to the way the diamond is cut.

11

CLARITY Simply Put Clarity refers to the presence (or absence) of inclusions within a diamond. What is an inclusion?
During crystallization, minerals can get trapped in the diamond. These characteristics, sometimes called inclusions, or blemishes, give each diamond its individuality. The number, color, size, and position of these all affect our assessment of clarity. What aspects of the inclusion affect the diamond’s clarity? S i z e : How large an inclusion is within a diamond. N U M B E R : How many inclusions are present. P O S I T I O N : Where the inclusion is located. N AT U R E : Based on their size and location some inclusions may affect the durability of the diamond. R E L IE F : Based on color, some inclusions may be more apparent than others. How is clarity graded? Most diamonds fall into the VS (very slightly included) or SI (slightly included) categories. In determining a clarity grade, the GIA system considers the size, nature, position, color or relief, and quantity of clarity characteristics visible through 10× magnification.

JOSH’S INSIDE INFO about

CLARITY Best Bang for my Buck? To get the best value for your money, buy a stone in the ranges of G-H color, and VS2-SI1 clarity. What should I know when buying studs? When buying studs, there is no need to use certified stones. Try to get a diamond in the range of H-J Color, with an SI2 Clarity. When evaluating the diamonds, don’t forget they will not be worn directly next to each other, but rather there is “a nose between the two Diamonds.” How does size affect clarity? As the size of diamonds increase, so do their facets. Thus, it is important when purchasing a larger size diamond, to stay in the higher range for clarity. This is because with larger facets, the ease of seeing the inclusions in the diamond increases. How does shape affect clarity? Certain shapes, such as Asscher and Emerald Cuts, are cut in a way where the facets are more transparent. This allows you to see into the diamond easier than other cuts. If you are going with one of these two shapes, we recommend that you stick with a VS2 Clarity or better.

Great tip:
To save money, purchase an SI stone where the flaws are on the side of the stone, so when set in the ring, it looks flawless. This will give the look of a VS stone but you only pay the price of an SI stone.

13

COLOR Simply Put The color grade of a diamond actually refers to its lack of color; or put another way, diamond color is all about what you can’t see. How is color graded? Diamonds are valued by how closely they approach colorlessness – the less color, the higher their value. The exception to this is fancy-color diamonds, such as pinks and blues, which lie outside this color range. How does the scale work? GIA’s color-grading scale for diamonds is the industry standard. The scale begins with the letter D, representing colorless, and continues with increasing presence of color to the letter Z, or nearcolorless. Each letter grade has a clearly defined range of color appearance. Diamonds are colorgraded by comparing them to stones of known color under controlled lighting and precise viewing conditions. Many of these color distinctions are so subtle as to be invisible to the untrained eye. But these slight differences make a very big difference in diamond quality and price.

COLOR How do I get the Best Bang for my Buck? To get the best value for your money, choose a diamond in the G-H color range, with a clarity between VS2-SI1. There is no need for a D color VVS, as this is much pricier with little added value in return. What should I look for when buying Studs? There is no need for certified diamonds. The ideal color would be in the H-J range, with an SI2 Clarity. When evaluating the diamonds, don’t forget they will not be worn directly next to each other, but rather there is “a nose between the 2 Diamonds.” What is fluorescence, and how does it affect the value of a diamond? Fluorescence is the affect a Diamond has when exposed to UV Light. Usually Fluorescence is unnoticed by the human eye in ordinary light. In diamonds with a high Color (D, E, F, G) quality Florescence can be considered undesirable as it will give the stone a “milky” look. When dealing with color grades of H, I and J Fluorescence can be desirable as it can add Whiteness to the Stone. Every stone is unique, and fluorescence is something that should be considered when buying a stone. Many times, this is hidden from the consumer. Our certified gemologists can help explain the fluorescence of each of our stones, so that you will know what you are buying. Setting If you have a diamond with a slight-yellow tint to it, set it in Platinum or White Gold, and it will bring more whiteness to the stone. You have just turned your “I” Color into a “G” Color. Congrats!

15

CUT Simply Put The only one of the 4 C’s influenced by man, a diamond’s cut is what determines its fire, sparkle and brilliance. It is the cut that truly makes a diamond catch one’s eye. As the G.I.A. explains it:
“While diamonds come in many different shapes, including round brilliants, hearts, pears , and marquises, cut has to do with proportion and the arrangement of facets. The sheer beauty of a diamond depends on cut more than anything else, using light to create brilliance, sparkle, and flashes of fire. The GIA Cut Scale ranges from Excellent to Poor. GIA provides a cut quality grade for standard round brilliant diamonds.” A diamond’s cut determines how well it reflects light and sparkles. The better the cut, the more the sparkle because more light is reflected back to the eye and not leaked out the back. When a diamond is cut with the proper proportions, light is returned out of the top of the diamond (which gemologists refer to as the table). If it is cut too shallow, light leaks out of the bottom; too deep and it escapes out of the side.

JOSH’S INSIDE INFO about

CUT I want a bigger diamond, but don’t want to spend more. What is the lowest quality cut I should be looking at? We would never recommend going below a “Good” Cut stone. With that said, there are a lot of creative ways that you can take a stone with a lower Cut grade that will enable you to buy a larger stone. What types of cut, make a stone look larger? Stones with lower depth % will give the stone a “Spready” look and make the stone appear larger than it actually is. For example, a 1.70 Carat Cushion Cut with a 60% Depth will appear as if it is a 2.00 Carat Stone. An elongated cut Diamond will make the stone appear larger then a Diamond which is cut more roundish. What is polish, and how does it affect the value of a diamond? Polish of a Diamond refers to the finishing or polishing of the facets of the Diamonds. The polish of a diamond shows how well the diamond was finished, how clean, shiny and straight edged the facets were cut, if any traces of minute or microscopic lines or blemishes were left by the polisher plus whether any marks are visible on the stone. Poorly polished facets may reduce the intensity of light reflected from, or refracted into and out of a diamond. The visual effect of Polish lower then “Good” is that you might feel a need to clean the stone. A common polish defect is surface grain lines. Even the most skilled cutter can encounter variations in hardness or grain, just like in timber, as they polish a facet. The result is a polish line or lines (usually microscopic) running across a facet. We recommend never going below a “Good” Polish on a Diamond. The differences in “Excellent” vs “Good” in terms of Polish is very minimal to the untrained eye. This is a way to save money when purchasing a Diamond. What is symmetry, and how does it affect the value of a diamond? Symmetry refers to the precision with which the facets of a diamond are aligned with each other and the consistency of facet shape and size per given section. The symmetry rating reflected on a diamond grading report is not an indication of the proportions of a diamond, however it does factor into diamond cut performance. The symmetry grade of a diamond refers to the external balance and alignment of the facets. When you look at diamonds, girdles are not always perfectly round and tables are not always perfect octagons. Sometimes facets have shapes that are distorted and sometimes they appear to have lopped off points. People often confuse diamond shape with diamond cut. Shape of the diamond is the outward appearance. When the diamond jewelers use the word cut, they are referring to reflective qualities of the diamond not their shape. Quality of diamond cut is a crucial part of 4Cs of diamonds. A great cut provides brilliance to the diamond. Finish and angles of all the diamonds lets you determine the diamond’s ability to handle light that results in its brilliance. When a diamond has a good cut, light travels through it easily, adding to its sparkle. The light that is passed through the diamond because of cut is alone responsible for making the diamond shine and increase it’s desirability. If a diamond is not cut properly, light leaks out from the bottom or side, eliminating some of the brilliance.

A Diamond Certificate or Grading Report, is a Blueprint into the Diamond. It gives you all of the details that you need to know when purchasing a Diamond. The GIA Diamond Grading Report includes an assessment of a diamond’s 4C’s – color, clarity, cut, and carat weight – along with a plotted diagram of its clarity characteristics and a graphic representation of the diamond’s proportions.

Some great ways to find out your girlfriend’s ring size: A.) ask one of her friends. You know at some point or another she has let her friends know her size for that one day where “you” will need it. B.) take one of her rings she wears and bring it to us and we will size it C.) for the sneaky and crafty type, you can cut a thin piece of paper and wrap it around her finger while she is sleeping, tape it together, slide it off, then bring it to us and/or mail it to us if you are located out of state. D.) there are many great Apps which you can download where you can place a ring of hers on the screen of your iphone or ipad and it will help you to determine her accurate ring size.
