A Great Place To Live

n 1838, James Fenimore Cooper noted that Cooperstown would “become a place of resort,” notably because of the village’s beautiful location on the shore of Otsego Lake, nestled in the lush foothills SUNY Oneonta of the northern Catskills.

I

The spectacular setting has not changed, but decades later, Cooperstown is a diverse, connected and engaged community. This small village of 2,100 yearround residents is home to internationally-acclaimed attractions that afford an unsurpassed variety and quality of cultural experiences. Coupled with a premier healthcare facility and well-respected educational institutions, the Cooperstownarea is truly a great place to live and work.

It’s an intimate place where individuals can make a difference, from participating in government to the school board – and more. The community is an eclectic, friendly blend of young families and retirees, healthcare and museum professionals, educators and generations of long-time residents.

Bassett Healthcare Network

Area residents and visitors alike treasure the rural environment – rolling farmland, pristine waterways and winding country roads. The community celebrates seasons with festivals and sporting activities, and the agriculture is bountiful with vibrant farmers’ markets and a keen interest in protecting and preserving the landscape.

The well-maintained homes, lawns and gardens and treelined streets are hallmarks of the Cooperstown experience. Like most small towns, Main Street is the hub of the business district, with enclaves of retail and other businesses scattered throughout the village and across the countryside.

Recreation, Camping,

Boating and Parks

The Cooperstown area is a sportman’s paradise, whether you’re a casual hiker, an avid cyclist or boating enthusiast. Otsego and Canadarago lakes are two of New York’s top cold water fisheries and provide endless opportunities throughout the year, from winter ice fishing to trolling for bass and salmon during the summer months. Miles of rivers and streams lure trout fishermen come April 1. We’re home to four state parks where visitors can enjoy camping, hiking, picnicking and swimming. More than 20 state and county lands offer rustic outdoor experiences. The Otsego Land Trust has hundreds of acres of land open to the public. Visitors can enjoy vistas of Otsego Lake from Lakefront Park, a quiet sitting park in the village, or get a sense of history at Council Rock, the mouth of the Susquehanna River where General George Clinton floated 200 bateaux to Pennsylvania during the American Revolution.

life in mid-19th-century New York. Demonstrations and interpretive exhibits reveal secrets of traditional crafts, medicinal treatments, decorative arts, and the some-times tricky tending of hearth and field. Ommegang also produces an array of seasonal and annually changing Limited Edition beers. In 1997, Ommegang became the first farmstead brewery built in America in over a century. The name Ommegang originates from 1549, when Charles V, the King of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor, visited Brussels. The people hailed his visit with a colorful pageant they called Ommegang. The word itself is Flemish meaning “to walk about.” The annual pageant continues through today. Brewery Ommegang is located on a 136-acre former hop farm on the banks of the Susquehanna River. Built in 1997, the brewery was designed to resemble a traditional Belgian farmstead brewery. Today the facility covers more than 25,000 square feet and produces more than 30,000 hl/year. The beers are distributed in 44 states and exported to several foreign countries. Visit www.ommegang.com for more information. Take a tour: Come experience the Belgian brewing process, led by one of Brewery Ommegang’s knowledgeable and entertaining staff members. Walk through the brewery taking in the sights and sounds while learning how the beers are handcrafted. From brewing to bottling, you will see it all. Stay for a tasting: After the tour, experience the beers with a tasting. Learn about the history and style of each beer while you sip and snack in our beautiful tasting room. Hungry for more: When the tour and tasting have made you hungry, stop by the café for a delicious Belgianinspired meal. The menu is full of mouth-watering options and along with your meal you can enjoy more Ommegang beers as well as Duvel imports from Belgium.
