Sydney, widely considered one of the world's greatest cities, is currently facing a many sydney-siders the allure of its beautiful harbour and beaches is fast fading and with existing infrastructure hardly coping with current densities, as well as nsw’s projected population growth of nearly two million people over the next 26 years, Sydney is facing major problems. Planning minister Tony Kelly explains, “we have the problem that we need 770,000 homes in the next 25 years. We need 30,000 homes a year. We're not running at that rate at the moment; we're about half that. And unless we change, then our children . The cruel consequence: housing in Constant issues facing Sydney’s future include immigration, population growth, an ageing and changing population, climate change and employment opportunity. Considering we are failing to produce the required dwellings for our growing population, development strategies must be incorporated to account for the aforementioned problems.

Increased density of proposed building types will act as a major catalyst for countering urban sprawl. Medium to high density building typologies will provide the corner stones for improved sustainable development. Once permission is obtained from state governments to build various medium density blocks of units we will see vast improvements in Sydney’s near future.

The government sees urban consolidation as a means of achieving a number of environmental objectives such as reduced competition for land, lower energy use, reduced greenhouse gas emissions from transport, reduction in waste generation and improved health of citizens through an increase in cycling and walking. All these factors fall under the banner of sustainable development and can be strongly achieved through prioritising the increased density levels of newly constructed housing. PROFILE I am currently in the process of concluding my final year of the Masters of Architecture Degree at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) where I have been studying for six years. At UTS we are taught a distinguished sense of architectural design, a variety of strong technical skills and a refined means for conceptual thinking. During my studies I successfully completed the Bachelor of Architecture Degree in 2010 which included a selective six month study abroad program in the United States, at the University of Arizona, Tucson.

During this time I was exposed to American teaching methods, architecural processes and design techniques which vastly expanded on my already gained knowledge of the built environment. For the past two and a half years I have been working for Sydney based architectural firm, MPR Design Group. At MPR I have learnt and obtained signifacant experience in the architectural field and have been developing my skills and understanding of the design and development industry.

Upon the conclusion of my final degree I will be moving to New York City indefinately in the hope of commencing a career in architecture in America. I am looking for work in an exciting and vibrant new city for both personal and professional benefits. I am interested in various aspects of architecture. The way people relate to their surroundings, the manner in which space is created and defined, and the cultural and personal meaning architecture can provide for an individual, group of people or entire city.

JOSHUA METZ - REFERENCE LETTER

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN, Joshua Metz joined Brian Meyerson Architects in March 2010 as a student architect. He has remained with the firm through its merger, in August 2011, when it became MPR Design Group (MPRDG). He has recently expressed a desire to broaden his horizons with overseas architectural experience and I support and encourage this move. During his employment at MPR he performed the role of a student architect. This involved assisting senior staff, including design development, construction detailing and managing projects to meet client deadlines. His contribution included assistance on: •

Documentation for numerous projects of various scales, including schematic plans and designs, 3D models in Sketch-Up and ArchiCAD, preparation of sketches for client presentations, contacting and meeting suppliers for pricing and product information and design and documentation for all phases of the design and construction process. Compilation of architectural and consultant documentation for Council submissions of various projects

Joshua maintains excellent people skills and as a result, has assisted in representing the firm at client and contractor meetings, both in the office and on-site. He has also been solely responsible for developing the company’s online presence in 2012, his contributions include: • • • •

The creation and maintenance of the firm’s Facebook page as the social face of MPRDG The creation and management of our Company Profiles on certain architectural media outlets, such as ArchDaily, Achitizer and Archilovers as well as the continual uploading of new content to these sites. The maintenance and management of our company website. Monitoring website traffic via Google Analytics

Joshua is an energetic pleasant, polite and reliable person, with an ability to relate well to people. He is committed to a career in architecture and is well versed in current architectural theory and ideas. Joshua also communicates well inside the organisation with directors, senior architects, designers, fellow students, interior department, etc. and is a valuable team player. Joshua is leaving MPRDG to gain overseas experience and we will miss his contribution. However, we wish him well in his bright career. I would welcome a telephone call to discuss any questions you may have about Joshua’s time at MPRDG and his prospects elsewhere. I have no hesitation in recommending him for future architectural employment. Yours sincerely,

Brian Meyerson B Arch ARAIA Principal MPR Design Group Pty Ltd t 8284 5757 direct m 0411 7888 31 brianm@mprdg.com
