D I S S E R T A T I O N TITLE: NEW PARLIAMENT HILL PROJECT: RE-DESIGNING PARLIAMENT SQUARE TUTOR: PROFFESSOR PETER SALTER YEAR: THREE

NEW PARLIAMENT HILL DEMOCRATIC HOUSE OF THE PEOPLE

During third year at the Welsh School of Architecture I have been working with Professor of Architecture Peter Salter. The final project was based in Parliament Square, London and aimed to design the square for public protest and democracy. As a controversial political space, I decided to research Tiananmen Square in China for the analysis phase of the design, and taking useful elements of this political space to my design in Westminster. One main interest was the use of Permanent and Temporary objects on Tiananmen Square. This could range from erecting model figures in demonstrations and National Day attractions compared to the monumental permanent government buildings. This idea was translated to Parliament Square by looking at furniture items within the surrounding buildings and translating them into temporary and permanent structures on the square.

L J J Z A R C H I T E C T S During spring 2014 I worked in Shanghai with a local architectural practice in designing a new multi-purpose block as a part of the master plan for Lanzhou New City. Located between the current city of Lanzhou and Lanzhou international airport, the new city is aimed at populating the area without expanding the current city. The area I focused on in the design is highlighted in the red perimeter below. This included a large shopping centre with high-end residential towers on top, and a series of office and hotel towers surrounding a park and lake. Although the design was restricted by economic intentions, I was able to push most of my ideas such as the curved and contour like form of each building giving a series of outside balcony spaces on every floor. Also I pushed the idea of a green roof where on top of the shopping centre the park is continued where possible with solar panels, as well as social schemes including bars and restaurants. Lastly the inward approach of the scheme means the public can be separated from the busy avenues surrounding the scheme.

Whilst working at BIG in New York, I was fortunate to work with multiple projects, Including architecture design and modeling for new Google Campus, Tishman Speyer Hudson Yards project, Penn Station redevelopment, a multipurpose development on King street, Toronto and also worked closely with the PR department including designing the new office Intranet interface, and developing a new service named BIG BRAND for marketing our extra services alongside architecture design. www.big.dk

BIG Brand is a creative service encompasing the design sense of BIG into all of our projects. We can offer a variation of branding services including short films, websites, publications and promotional materials, applications and digital media. By continuing to develop brand identity with us, each project can evolve with a legacy in keeping with its initial design.

We’ve sold over 100,000 copies of Yes is More, and 20,000 of Hot to Cold!

Our graphic designers help us make all the BIG stationary!

We put together an app to better understand each part of the Super Kilen Project!

We can curate other websites too to promote individual projects!

Much of my design inspiration comes from the shapes and sights from travel and exhibitions. I use a film SLR camera to shoot things of particular interest to me, such as architectures, models and unusual or innovative things. It is important to me to use a film camera not only because of the quality of the images produced, but because there is a limited amount of pictures that can be taken on one film. Due to the lack of space on a film, it makes you more careful and considered in what you capture compared to digital cameras. All my images are captured using the filn SLR camera‌ P E N T A X M E.

TITLE: STUDENT ASSOCIATION AT THE WELSH SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE ROLE: PRESIDENT YEAR: 2011 - 12 Elected as President of the Architecture Society for 2011/12, I led the sawsa team in organising events including the fortnightly lecture series “Alternatives in Architecture”, including speakers from London, Paris and the united States. SAWSA is the student run society for the architecture course at the Welsh School of Architecture (WSA). We aim to run not just social events, but also educational lectures by practicing architects, life drawing classes, staff-student meetings, external meetings with local groups such as Design Circle or RSAW, and an annual ball for students, staff and external architects. In essence, SAWSA acts as an intermediate for its students and the field of architecture both inside and outside of the university. SAWSA’s main activity throughout the year is the fortnightly lecture series in which leading architects/designers come to speak about their work, philosophies and interests, giving the students an insight in architectural post qualification. We will host a series of lectures for the school, life drawing sessions and an educational film series on a regular basis. The main event of the year will be the architecture ball in 2012. There will also be numerous social events from the freshers party to a Chinese New Year meal, all of which are fundamental activities to the society.
