YOU KNOW WHY YOU’RE HERE. THIS IS ASPEN. THAT MEANS SPECTACULAR SKIING, FESTIVE APRÈS, SWINGING HOTSPOTS AND WORLD-CLASS DINING AND CULTURE. IT MEANS STUNNING EYE CANDY, WHETHER IT’S THE MATCHLESS BEAUTY OF COLORADO’S MOUNTAINS OR THE GLAMOROUS GLITTERATI WHO COME TO SEE AND BE SEEN. IT MEANS OVER-THE-TOP PARTIES, THE BEST CONCERTS THE MUSIC WORLD HAS TO OFFER AND FASCINATING INTELLECTUAL GET-TOGETHERS THAT BRING WORLD LEADERS IN BUSINESS, POLITICS AND THE ARTS TO OUR LITTLE MOUNTAIN TOWN. But here’s the thing: Everyone knows that about Aspen. You could have gleaned that much from one viewing of “Aspen Extreme.” That’s the Aspen that’s presented to the world. It’s the Aspen you think you know, and every bit of it is true, but it’s only part of the story. Because what you don’t know about Aspen is that what you don’t know is what you should know. What is it about this place that makes people come for a winter and stay for the rest of their lives? Certainly, the parties and glitz of Aspen as portrayed by TV and the movies are enough to draw you here, but it’s not until you’ve gotten past that flashy facade that you’ll start to discover what this town and this area are all about. And that—Aspen’s unvarnished soul—is why folks keep coming back. Ask the people who live here what Aspen means to them and, sure,
someone might say it means rocking the night away with the rest of the young and hip at some X Games concert. But you’re just as likely to find others who’ll tell you that to them Aspen means watching a shaft of sunlight sparkle on the snow somewhere out in the backcountry where the only sound is the wind in the pines. And, obviously, plenty of people will tell you Aspen means first tracks down Highland Bowl on a powder day, but just as many will say that Aspen means a rich cultural history and a real sense of community that casual visitors don’t often see. The truth is that Aspen means all of those things and more, and it can mean different things to different people. But you’ll never know what Aspen really means to you until you stop just visiting and decide to make Aspen home.

A TASTE OF THE GOOD LIFE Every June, for three days, an annual phenomenon called the Food & Wine Classic takes over downtown Aspen. It’s fair to say that if you haven’t attended it, you haven’t really experienced all of Aspen. For those three days, with rock-star chefs and TV personalities gadding about, Aspen is the center of the culinary world. If you’re a foodie or a wine connoisseur, that’s the time to be here. The rest of the year, sadly, poor Aspenites just have to make do with world-class dining and libations in a proliferation that other ski towns (and most cities) can’t even begin to compete with. Whether it’s cutting-edge sushi at Matsuhisa or Kenichi, a visiting celebrity chef at the Chefs Club, an Aspen classic like Piñons, or upscale French at an institution like Cache Cache, it’s hard not to get a sensational meal in Aspen. Try Zocalito for Mexican cuisine from Oaxaca that’s more authentic than the cuisine in Oaxaca. If red meat is more your thing, head upstairs to Jimmy’s for a rib-eye or filet and then stick around and dance off the calories at Latin Night. For innovative Italian food, we’ve got so many options that you’d swear you were in Rome. We suggest taking in the scene at Campo di Fiori or Acquolina or trying an old Aspen favorite in L’Hostaria. Heck, Aspen’s even got great balls at the Meatball Shack. You almost can’t keep up with all the tantalizing food in town. 8 |

And if you have a taste for fine libations, you’re in luck. Is beer your thing? Have a seat in the beer garden at Hops Culture and pick from some 200 brands of suds from around the world. Or head over to the Aspen Brewing Company for a seasonal brew fresh from the vat. Wine? Great wine lists abound, but for a treat, go to Element 47 at the Little Nell (a 20-time winner of Wine Spectator’s Grand Award) and ask the sommelier to show you the finest bottle in their cavernous cellar. Tell him you’re looking for the one that costs as much as a BMW. It’s no secret that if you want to fly in and eat some of the most exquisite meals of your life or sip the kind of top-shelf drinks you only read about, you can do that ’til the cows come home in Aspen. But that’s not how people really eat on a day-today basis, is it? In truth, life here is much more about grabbing a burger or a slice with the kids, or meeting friends for drinks and appetizers after a day on the slopes. You may not know this, but Aspen does just as well when it comes to that kind of eating. If you really want to eat and drink like a local, start your day with breakfast and coffee at Peach’s Corner Café or Main St. Bakery. Then pick out a favorite lunch spot from such local-to-the-core joints as The Big Wrap or 520 Grill, or opt for a healthier option like the all-organic, vegan Spring Café or Pyramid Bistro, which boasts a menu based on nutritarian principles. (Of course, if you’re on the hill, your lunch options will be a little different. We
recommend the touch of Switzerland that is Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro when at Aspen Highlands and the decidedly unvegan Sam’s Smokehouse when you’re at Snowmass.) After a day of skiing, if you’re feeling frisky, soak in the après-ski scene at the base of the gondola at Ajax Tavern, or hit the rollicking pool party next door at the Sky Hotel’s 39 Degrees. Not your speed? Fine. Meet up with friends, take in a game and nosh on comfort food at White House Tavern or Finbarr’s Irish Pub. And if you’ve got the kids along, that’s no problem. Take them ice skating on the rink next to CP Burger, or let them hit the skate park powered by slices from Taster’s Pizza. If the weather isn’t cooperating, take them down to Ryno’s Pies and Pints and let them play arcade games while you hoist a cold one. If you’re in the mood for a little taste of Aspen as it used to be, quaff an ale and down a burger at a landmark like the Red Onion, the J-Bar or Justice Snow’s at the historic Wheeler Opera House. And if it’s 2 in the morning and you just left a party, do what every other local does and go get a hefty slice at New York Pizza before you go home and call it a night. Aspen’s got an astonishing array of dining options, but here’s the most amazing thing about eating your way around town: All of the places mentioned above—and plenty of others that we didn’t mention—are in downtown Aspen, within
about five blocks of one another. Sometimes it makes you wonder how there’s room left for anything else.
A CULTURE OF CULTURE Speaking of the newly renovated Wheeler Opera House, if you’re into music and the performing arts, that’s going to be one of your two home bases in Aspen in the winter. Whether it’s a concert by a world-renowned artist, a comedy event like the Aspen Laff Festival, or a cinema extravaganza like Aspen Film’s annual Academy Screenings, there’s always something worth seeing at the Wheeler. The same could be said of Belly Up, your other home base, which seems to have a new band playing nearly every night. And you want to talk about good bands? Let’s put it this way: Almost nowhere else can you get such proximity to such
big names in such an intimate setting. There have been legendary shows there made all the better by the fact that you could basically go up and high-five the lead singer. If you’re looking for something on the more sophisticated side musically, head over to the Little Nell and take in a performance at the JAS Café. An offshoot of the wildly popular Jazz Aspen Snowmass festivals, the JAS Café brings top-notch jazz artists to town for a dozen or more shows each season. Keep your eyes peeled for other live music at places like the Square Grouper and the Red Onion. You might even find live music to accompany the light seasonal fare at SO café on the roof of the Aspen Art Museum if you time it right. Of course, if you take your art without music, you can always leave the roof of the museum and see what exhibits are showing in the museum’s six galleries—or you could just take in the museum itself, a stunning, polarizing edifice designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Shigeru Ban.

Aspiring artists can work on their own museumworthy masterpieces in Snowmass at the venerable Anderson Ranch Arts Center. Occupying a lovely 4.5-acre campus near the center of town, Anderson Ranch will be celebrating 50 years of offering artist residences and workshops in 2016. Plans call for lots of great events to celebrate the occasion. If you’d rather just look at art, take a walk around Aspen and see what’s on display in downtown’s myriad art galleries. Longtime favorites include Baldwin Gallery, Aspen Grove Fine Art and Galerie Maximillian. Newer on the scene but also well worth a visit are Vickers Collection and LivAspen Art. We should warn you, though, if you see giant snow sculptures downtown, we promise those aren’t permanent installations. That’s just part of Wintersköl, an annual celebration with roots dating back to 1951 that fills town with fun activities, concerts and more for four days every January. Rumor has it that Wintersköl was started just to give locals an excuse to party, but nowadays you’ll find that in Aspen, no excuse is really necessary. From the glamorous, non-stop bashes of the holiday season, when America’s hottest celebs descend on Aspen to usher in the new year, to the outrageous shenanigans of Gay Ski Week, to raucous concerts in the heart of downtown as part of the X Games festivities, you’ll always find plenty of compatriots looking to whoop it up with you. When you’re tired of whooping things up and looking for something a little more highbrow 10 |

If theater is more of your thing, look past the Wheeler to inventive local groups like the Hudson Reed Ensemble, which specializes in staging works in less traditional venues.
A FANTASTIC FOURSOME Of course, any talk of winter in Aspen wouldn’t be complete without mentioning our incredible—and incredibly diverse—ski areas. With four hills in such close proximity to one another, Aspen offers an onmountain experience unparalleled in the U.S. and matched by few other resorts in the world. Start with Aspen Mountain, affectionately known by locals as Ajax, one of the true grandes dames of the ski world ever since a crude boat lift started dragging people up the hill in the 1930s. By 1941, Aspen was hosting the national slalom and
downhill championships (a competitive tradition that continues to this day with FIS World Cup races every Thanksgiving), and in 1946, the first chairlift was installed and the Aspen Skiing Corporation was founded by visionary industrialist Walter Paepcke, a man whose enduring legacy still casts a long shadow over town. At just 675 skiable acres, Ajax might seem on the small side for a ski area, but it packs a wallop totally out of proportion with its humble acreage. With an impressive vertical rise of 3,267 feet accessed by a single ride up the Silver Queen Gondola, Ajax can give you all you can handle very quickly, and locals know this is the best place to get a quick workout with a few leg-burning, top-to-bottom runs on your lunch break. You might have heard that Ajax has no green runs—which is true— but there’s plenty of gentle cruising terrain at the top of the mountain for people new to the sport. If you’re an expert, however, you might not know that over the last few years Ajax has opened a plethora of new double-black runs. Add those to legendary slopes like the Face of Bell, the Dumps and Jackpot, and you’ll soon see why Ajax has become one of the best places for steep skiing in Colorado. Just across Castle Creek Valley from Ajax, Aspen Highlands has been a premier ski destination since opening in 1958. But it wasn’t until 1993, when it became part of the Aspen Skiing Company, that Highlands truly hit its stride. First, the four slow,

AJAX MIGHT SEEM ON THE SMALL SIDE FOR A SKI AREA, BUT IT PACKS A WALLOP TOTALLY OUT OF PROPORTION WITH ITS HUMBLE ACREAGE. archaic lifts that used to take you to the top of the mountain were replaced by two high-speed quads that could get you there in a quarter of the time. Then, in 2002, the awe-inspiring Highland Bowl opened in its entirety, instantly propelling Highlands to the top of bucket lists for skiers around the world. Nowadays, Highlands is the preferred destination for countless locals and visitors alike who savor the gnarly terrain, uncrowded slopes, breathtaking views and laid-back vibe. If you think
you’re a good skier, you need to go ski Highlands and prove your mettle in the Bowl or on the equally challenging runs of Steeplechase, Temerity or Deception. Once you’ve gotten a taste of what Highlands’ 1,040 acres and 3,635 feet of vertical are serving up, you might never want to ski anywhere else. Formerly known strictly as a haven for beginning skiers, Buttermilk has drastically changed its image over the last decade or so. That’s not to say it isn’t still a perfect place to learn the sport—it is, particularly on the often-overlooked, forgiving slopes of West Buttermilk—but it has become so much more with the growth of snowboarding and freestyle skiing. Though Buttermilk’s top-notch terrain parks draw skiers and boarders all winter, the resort really comes to life each January when the X Games take over. A four-day celebration of youth, style and extreme winter sports, the X Games lends Buttermilk a wild party atmosphere and radicalness that belies
