veryone has a story about their first visit to Aspen. For me, it was during summer; I had never even been on skis. Within hours of arriving in the charming mountain town, I found myself in the tent of the Aspen Music Festival, the light surreally beautiful. A delicious breeze stirred the leaves of the aspen trees outside. As I waited for the concert to begin, a striking woman, her white hair in an elegant chignon, caught my attention; my gaze locked with her piercing blue eyes. But there was something more, something about the way she held herself. Her presence. Only later did I learn she was the grande dame of Aspen, Elizabeth Paepcke. She, along with her husband, the Chicago industrialist Walter Paepcke, were the founders of modern-day Aspen, and the vision behind what still makes the Aspen experience one of a kind. The Paepckes saw more than Aspen’s natural beauty in the 1940s when they discovered what was then an abandoned mining town. They saw Aspen as a place to nurture mind, body and spirit, a place where people could lift themselves out of their usual, everyday selves. Today that vision is more vibrant than ever. Despite Aspen’s reputation as a wild, celebrity-infested party destination— which it often is—the town also has a relentlessly highbrow side, especially in summer. After all, it wasn’t skiing or movie stars that put Aspen on the map back in the middle of last century: It was a birthday party for Goethe! In 1949, the Paepckes held a convocation in honor of the 200th birthday of the poet/philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The warm reception the Goethe conference received in the international press made it possible for the Paepckes to establish the Aspen Music Festival and the Aspen Institute in 1950. (The enterprising couple also founded the Aspen Skiing Company.) For culture vultures, Aspen is paradise, especially in summer. The smart set flocks to the Aspen Institute—a coveted ticket is its TED-like Aspen Ideas Festival, held at the end of June/early July. “Aspen is the cultural capital of the West—it has it all: art, music, dance, theater and discussion,” says Richard Edwards, owner of the

internationally acclaimed Baldwin Gallery, the members-only Caribou Club and some of Aspen’s most beautiful, historic downtown buildings. It’s not unusual to hear an Aspen resident declare, “I came for the skiing, but I stayed for the summer.” Sure, it’s become a cliché plastered on T-shirts, but it’s still as true for me as it is for many residents. Summer in Aspen bears little resemblance to a typical beach vacation. Take the “personal best” ethos that permeates life here. There’s something about this place that inspires you to leave your comfort zone and try new things, to push your knowledge, your physical abilities, your sense of adventure, your concept of what constitutes a life well lived. Aspen may be one of the fittest towns on the planet. We’re eco-minded and obsessed with sports and the outdoors. Our idea of fun outdoor activities runs to strenuous hikes and bike rides. We even do our yoga outside, whether at the top of Aspen Mountain or down at the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES). To outsiders, our athletic pursuits can seem daunting, or even slightly insane at times, but visiting “weekend warriors” love to participate in Aspen’s daily adrenaline rushes. Aspen’s appetite for intensity may be why so many professional athletes, from skiers and boarders to runners and bikers, call it home. Aspen, for instance, is on the circuit of the thrilling USA Pro Challenge every August—America’s answer to the Tour De France. Cyclist Tejay van Garderen, who won the Challenge the last two years, lives and trains here for the Tour De France. For recreational athletes like myself, Aspen adrenaline often means devotion to what’s locally been dubbed the “Daily Double:” a regular itinerary of strenuous outdoor pursuits in the morning and early afternoon followed by a round of cultural events in the evening. My personal favorite Double includes a morning hike to the 11,212-foot summit of Aspen Mountain and a gondola ride back down, followed by biking up the Maroon Bells or Castle Creek valleys. Later I’ll attend an opening at the Aspen Art Museum or a downtown gallery, or a classical or jazz concert. One thing that sets Aspen apart from many US ski resorts is its deep history and sense of place. It’s a year-round town, and

there’s no better time than summer to discover its past by visiting its architectural gems—beautifully preserved Victorian buildings from the mining days and historic ski chalets. Many people don’t know that Aspen also played a role in the growth of modernist culture in post–World War ll America when the Paepckes brought a number of Bauhaus architects and designers to live and work here. I confess: I’m addicted to Aspen’s weather—its blue-bird skies, sunny days, humidity-free air, and especially its inky night skies perfect for amateur astronomers. But ultimately why I love Aspen, and why I live here, is that it’s a real community, not a theme park. You will meet and make friends with some of the most interesting, quirky and successful people, all in one tiny little place. There’s something about Aspen and the activities we do together, especially in summer, that creates deep bonds. If you’re considering checking out all that Aspen has to offer, I’d say there’s no better way to experience it than a weeklong summer visit. If pushed, I might even be convinced to part with a few recommendations for how best to spend your perfect summer week in Aspen.

SUNDAY: Master The Basics

D

owntown Aspen’s small size often surprises visitors. There’s no better way to get your bearings on an initial visit then by taking the gondola—about a 15-minute ride— to the top of Aspen Mountain. Then slide your credit card and grab a bike from one of the 14 WE-cycle bikesharing stations around the city. Stop at the Wheeler Opera House, built in 1889 by the mining mogul Jerome B. Wheeler, and lovingly restored. Even back then, Aspen was a wealthy, cultured town, and the building is still so grand. Aspen’s enduring commitment to the arts has no better symbol than the new Aspen Art Museum, designed by Pritzker Prize–winner Shigeru Ban. Though the building’s size and siting remain controversial in town, most people have embraced this three-story glass-walled building, with its

9

FARM TO (PERIODIC) TABLE Chef Bryan Moscatello celebrates local ingredients at Element 47 at The Little Nell. distinctive basket-like, wood-clad exterior and wood truss roof. I like to enter the way the architect envisioned: by first taking the stairs to the rooftop. There, your climb will be rewarded with fantastic views of Aspen Mountain towering on the horizon, and to the east, the jutting peaks of Independence Pass. Grab a cappuccino or matcha (Japanese tea) with a flaky croissant or brownie at the museum’s café, SO, or

Did you know? • Aspen was originally discovered by the Ute Indians. It was their summer ceremonial and hunting grounds, called “Shining Mountain.” • Aspen was a former silver-mining town. The first miners arrived in 1879. By 1893, it was booming with 12,000 residents. • Aspen became a ghost town after silver was demonetized in 1893. Up until its rediscovery in the 1940s, the Aspen area depended on ranching and potato farming. • Aspen was reinvented by a quixotic Chicago couple and their inner circle as a summer cultural mecca and, later, a winter ski resort. • Aspen stands 7,945 feet above sea level. Visitors must be vigilant for symptoms of altitude sickness and drink lots of the mountain town’s most famous beverage, “Aspen tap.” • Aspen is Colorado’s 53rd largest city and has a population of approximately 6,680 full-time residents.

10

stay for a light lunch. The menu changes weekly, and the food is simple but delicious. Finally, descend into the museum and wander its six galleries. The museum is actually a kunsthalle, with no permanent collection, so its exhibits of contemporary art change throughout the year. Die-hard art lovers can continue on to the town’s best galleries: Baldwin Gallery, 212GALLERY, Gallerie Maximillian and Casterline / Goodman. Your culture fix continues at the Sunday 4 p.m. Aspen Music Festival concert held in the Benedict Music Tent on the eastern side of the Aspen Meadows campus, minutes from downtown. It’s a local tradition to bring a blanket and sit on the lawn, which is free, but I prefer sitting in the tent. The Aspen festival is often called the “Juilliard of the West” because the 600 international students at its affiliated school study with world-class musicians and have frequent opportunities to work on concerts that feature talents such as Joshua Bell, Yefim Bronfman, the Emerson String Quartet and Sarah Chang. The Aspen Meadows is also home to the esteemed Aspen Institute, a nonprofit that offers programs in leadership and ideas, and the Aspen Center for Physics, which has hosted 52 Nobel laureates over the years. Most of the buildings, originally designed by Bauhaus architect Herbert Bayer, were rebuilt in the 1990s with a Bauhaus look and spirit. Get a map at the front desk of the Meadows and do a self-guided tour of its outdoor art. Highlights include Bayer’s grassy mounds— some of the world’s first earthworks— as well as his stunning 19-piece marble sculpture garden; there’s also a Buckminster Fuller geodesic dome. Tonight’s dinner is at The Little Nell’s Element 47, which is all about the pleasures of the table. Start with its tableside custom drinks. Try the Manhattan 100, concocted with Michter’s 20-Year Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon and a housemade, herbal-infused sweet vermouth, or perhaps the Margarita 47. Made with Casa Dragones Tequila and liquid nitrogen, this drink gives a whole new meaning to the term frozen margarita. The Nell’s chef, Bryan Moscatello, presides over a fusion of American and Alpine-style cooking. He uses great local ingredients, such as pork belly and meltin-your-mouth Wagyu steak from nearby

Emma Farms. Pickled peaches from Paonia complement a rich Hudson Valley foie gras. I love that the hotel gets its honey from beehives on Aspen Mountain tended by a ski patroller. The Nell is heaven for oenophiles, with more than 18,000 bottles of wine in its cellar. Let presiding Master Sommelier Carlton McCoy be your guide.

MONDAY: Take A Hike! (And A Class)

A

nother way to get a sense of the Aspen scene, while eating well, is to linger over breakfast at local gems Peach’s Corner Cafe and Victoria’s Espresso. Both have outdoor patios, where you’ll see most people decked out in hiking or biking clothes. This morning, you have several hiking options. I love taking visiting friends up the Hunter Creek Trail. The hike difficulty is moderate, the scenery stellar: Surrounded by panoramas of Aspen and the Elk Mountain Range, you’ll pass a roaring river, streams, aspen groves and rock-studded meadows where several dilapidated mining-era cabins still stand. The Hunter Creek Trail also connects to Smuggler Mountain, another beloved “backyard” hike, though it’s crowded on summer days. I love the nonprofit Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES), which offers a selection of free hiking tours led by experts on the local fauna and flora. Wildflowers abound in the high country. Go with a naturalist up Independence Pass to track columbine, bluebells and Indian paintbrush; my favorite trails are Lincoln Creek, Grizzly Lake and Midway Pass. After packing in as much hiking as possible, enjoy a late lunch at Prospect Terrace in the garden of the historic Hotel Jerome on Main Street, with a gorgeous view of Aspen Mountain.Though the menu changes seasonally, its J-Bar Burger with cheese and Maine Lobster Cobb Salad are perennial pleasers. Afterward, poke inside its funky J-Bar—still an authentic saloon. It was a favorite spot for Hunter S.Thompson and celebs like Jack Nicholson to misbehave. And just for the hell of it, try an Aspen Crud—its signature drink from Prohibition days—a vanilla milkshake laced with bourbon.

Aspen’s summer calendar is loaded with talks and events. This afternoon, head to Anderson Ranch in the nearby Snowmass ski resort, eight miles east of Aspen. It’s a beautiful drive, with views of Capitol Peak and Mount Daly. A former sheep and cattle ranch, the art center houses artists’ studios and offers workshops in painting, photography, ceramics, woodworking and more. You may find your inner artist and want to sign up for a class for your next trip. Tonight, dinner is at Matsuhisa Aspen, part of celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s Nobu restaurant group. Get a seat on its upstairs patio. (They don’t take reservations, so sip cold sake while you wait.) If you’re lucky, alpenglow will illuminate Aspen’s famous Red Mountain as you dig into the restaurant’s signature yellowtail jalapeño sashimi. The upstairs dining room is more moderately priced than that on the main floor, but its menu is limited, so consider downstairs for “Omakase” (“I’ll leave it to you”), where you let the chef select the dishes.

It wasn’t skiing or movie stars that put Aspen on the map back in the middle of the last century: It was a birthday party for Goethe.

TUESDAY: A High-Country Picnic, A Bit O’ Ballet

E

xperience Aspen’s high country by Jeep in the capable hands of my go-to outfitter, the Little Nell’s Adventure Shop. Count on knowledgeable, fun guides, plus a side of culinary bliss, thanks to a picnic lunch and wine from The Nell’s Element 47. Book with guide Steve Goff and explore my favorite routes, Little Annie’s or Taylor Pass. The thrilling finale: driving down the front side of Aspen Mountain’s Summer Road—a whole new way to experience the town. Early pre-show dinner tonight is at a local favorite, Cache Cache, which features amazingly good French fare prepared by Co-owner and Chef Chris Lanter. Sit at the packed outside patio. Classics include Escargots à la Bourguignonne; Frisée and lardons with duck egg; Colorado Rack of Lamb with fennel-potato gratin; and Rotisserie Chicken. Co-owner Jody Larner and Sommelier Alex Havier have built an excellent 1,200-label wine list, strong in Burgundies and Champagnes.

JEROME IF YOU WANT TO The historic Hotel Jerome features a convivial atmosphere and dropdead views of Aspen Mountain.

11

cowboys (and -girls) roping and riding and racing (but no gun-slinging). The show starts at 7 p.m., so you can grab dinner either before or after at Eight K, at the nearby Viceroy Hotel. I’m a big fan of chef Will Nolan, whose New Orleans/ Southern roots inject an authentic, unmistakable oomph into Cajun and Creole dishes like BBQ Shrimp & Grits.

THURSDAY: Angling (Or Birding?) By Day, Drama By Night

T

UNAPOLOGETIC EXHIBITIONIST With no permanent collection of its own, the Aspen Art Museum hosts a variety of contemporary art shows. Next, head to the Aspen District Theatre for a performance by the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. This small troupe, known for its ambitious repertoire, also presents top-notch performances by the likes of the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. Afterward, grab a nightcap at Bootsy Bellows Aspen, and dance ’till you drop.

WEDNESDAY: Just Your Typical Cycling, Ghost Town, Rodeo Day

T

he Aspen area offers the best biking on the planet, both road and mountain. Book with Scott Kasin’s Pros In Motion for training and coaching, and ride the Maroon Bells or Castle Creek Valley. My friends also love

12

booking a guide for the mountain biking adventures offered at Four Mountain Sports in Base Village Snowmass. Here you’ll find more than 50 miles of trails, all accessed by the Elk Camp gondola or lift. But I’m a road bike rider, and Castle Creek Valley is one of my favorites, followed by lunch at the Pine Creek Cookhouse, housed in a rustic log cabin. It’s said that this stunningly beautiful valley was the sacred ceremonial grounds of the Ute Indians; they were definitely onto something. There’s a healthy-but-tasty salad bar, with lots of grains such as quinoa. For a more complex dish, try a mixed grill from talented chef Chris Keating. Whatever you choose to eat, linger over a glass of wine and take in the views. After lunch, grab a cab back to town, but make a detour to the nearby Ashcroft Ghost Town.Try to imagine this remote location had a population of more than 2,000 in the 1880s. Aspen naturally brings out everyone’s cowboy fantasies, and that’s why we’re heading to the 40-year-old Snowmass Rodeo tonight. Sure it’s touristy, but it’s also good kitschy fun to watch these

he Aspen area is a haven for both experienced and beginning anglers, with premiere flyfishing on the official “Gold Medal” waters of the Roaring Fork, whose headwaters run from the top of Independence Pass for 70 miles down the valley, as well as excursions to the Fryingpan and Colorado Rivers. Learning to fly-fish is definitely on my bucket list. I have a recurring fantasy in which I hop into a helicopter and set off on an excursion with the Little Nell Adventure Shop to a private ranch in Western Colorado known for its trophy trout. Could there be a better way to learn? Another go-to for customized fly-fishing outings is Aspen Outfitting Company, with guide Mal Burks. The company also has a private range for clay-target shooting and arranges upland bird-hunting excursions, two more activities I’ve never had the chance to try, but want to. Dinner tonight is at Casa Tua Aspen, an offshoot of the Miami Beach restaurant and club—but you don’t have to be a member of its private club to eat here. Get a table outside. Main courses like the Branzino Casa Tua are standouts, as are its homemade al dente tagliatelle and fettuccine. The restaurant walls play host to a variety of short-term art exhibitions. Then you’re off to Theatre Aspen, an organization that has upped the ante in the last couple of years, from staff and board appointments to its talent, programming and the addition of an intimate, enclosed tent structure. Performances range from musicals to dramatic plays, with a cast of both local and visiting actors.

FRIDAY: Jasper Johns, A Members-Only Club, Disco

T

his morning takes you on an excursion to the Powers Art Center, about 30 miles northwest of Aspen, in the funky town of Carbondale. The center, sited on a 400acre working ranch, focuses on works by Jasper Johns that were part of the art collection of Carbondale resident John Powers, a major connoisseur of Pop Art. Back in Aspen, enjoy a languorous lunch at The Little Nell’s Ajax Tavern, at the base of Aspen Mountain. Ajax is a great place for people-watching, best accomplished with fresh supplies of plump oysters and a dry, fruity Chablis from its outstanding wine list. Follow that with Ajax’s Double Double, made with locally raised beef from actor and part-time resident Kurt Russell’s Home Run Ranch; order it with their signature Ajax Truffle Fries. I highly recommend attending the 6 p.m. concerts at the Aspen Music Festival, but you may want to simply chill out at your hotel early this evening. Tonight you are going to Aspen’s first private club, the Caribou. While it’s a membersonly club, a limited number of weekly memberships can be obtained; ask your concierge for help. The Caribou’s chef, nationally recognized Miles Angelo, creates some of the best food in town. He uses only the finest ingredients available for his seasonally rotating menu, known for excellent grilled fish and Colorado lamb. After dinner, hit the dance floor. Caribou and disco: They complete each other.

Post-breakfast, head back to ACES, the 25-acre gem tucked away in Aspen’s West End, founded in 1968 by Aspen matriarch Elizabeth Paepcke. The place is brimming with wildlife—everything from beavers just doing their thing to horned owls and glorious golden eagles wrapping up a stint in the center’s rehabilitative program for injured raptors. Ready for lunch? You’ll find great sandwiches at the White House Tavern. The fried grouper sandwich, the big cheeseburger and the stacked prime rib sandwich with French dip, all served on housemade bread, are to die for. There are also delicious salads—kale and Thai noodles with steak is my favorite. Get there early enough so you can get a table outside. (They don’t take reservations, but they do serve all day.) If you haven’t already squeezed a massage in, it’s time to chill at the Remède Spa at the St. Regis Aspen Resort. It’s the best in town. The space is so Zen, the treatments so good: You’ll be in seventh heaven. The spa has recently implemented some design upgrades—new lighting and artwork. Spa Director Julie Oliff points out that the spa is not just offering facials; since Aspen’s dry air is harsh on your skin, Remède also focuses on total-body treatments, such as the ESPA brand Optimal Body Tri Serum. There’s nothing like the Chef’s Club by FOOD & WINE at the St. Regis AL FRESCO Music lovers take advantage of free lawn seating outside the Aspen Music Festival’s Benedict Music Tent.

Aspen Resort, where you’re having dinner tonight. While it has its own menu, overseen by longtime local chef Todd Slossberg, the restaurant’s specialty is spotlighting dishes from Food & Wine magazine’s annual list of Best New Chefs, and there are special-event dinners with these chefs throughout the year. Another option: Sit at the counter that looks out onto the open kitchen and let Chef Slossberg personally cook a meal for you. You have one more stop, a basement room at the Little Nell. Here Jazz Aspen Snowmass, which holds major summer and Labor Day festivals (this summer’s, from June 26 to July 6, features Maceo Parker, the Count Basie Orchestra, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, among others), also presents more intimate performances year-round through its JAS Café program, with music ranging from Latin and Cuban to blues. The room is all moody lighting and black-and-white photos of performers. Book either the late or early show, depending on your dinner preferences. This summer features the Christian McBride Trio, Ann Hampton Callaway and the Django Reinhardt NY Festival (held on the rooftop of the Aspen Art Museum). And now, loaded with memories, you’ll understand why the Aspen Experience is indeed one of a kind. Janet O’Grady is a writer and social media strategist. In 1987, she founded Aspen Magazine with her late husband, Randy Beier. This summer, O’Grady launches AspenPlaybook, a curated lifestyle blog and newsletter focused on her mountain home.

SATURDAY: Prepare For Re-entry

T

he Farmer’s Market is a beloved Saturday-morning tradition in Aspen. The produce comes from nearby, lower-elevation Western Colorado towns—the state is famous for its peaches—as do the eggs and meats. There are several good local food stands offering Thai, Greek and Mexican food.
