MODERN ASPEN, THE ROUGH AND TUMBLE MINING TOWN
turned luxury ski resort, in itself is a town born from necessity. But Aspen is also an invention of its people’s strong will, self-reliance and spirit of independence. From the time of its first settlers, in what was then summer hunting grounds for Native Americans and then known as Ute City, Aspen has been a community of survivors who outlasted harsh winters, silver booms and financial busts to carve out a life here, to build something of worth and legacy to last beyond their own days. Aspen has nurtured and protected those working to cultivate culture, art, food, and most of all community. It is this element, it the homegrown quality of its people, ideas and products, that gives Aspen its undeniable appeal. “Aspen has 140 years of history,” says Nina Gabianelli, Vice President of Programming and Education at the Aspen Historical Society. “We were and still are a diverse community. From the very beginning, we had business people creating companies, miners who worked the silver mines, ranchers who came to grow the crops, bakers to feed the people. Those products, businesses and innovations in Aspen came out of necessity. They had to build everything they needed in the West. They made everything possible.” And when things went south for our miners, the Aspen people hung on. During The Quiet Years, the 50 or so years of decline caused by the devaluation of silver, when the town’s population dwindled to 600 people, Aspenites turned from mining to ranching, digging ditches to water crops, growing potatoes and grain. Aspen did not become one of the West’s forgotten ghost towns, but instead began to create herself anew—this time utilizing the mountains for a different kind of fortune—skiing. Aspen Skiing Co., founded in 1946, has been the most successful, if not the gold standard of homegrown Aspen products. This original Aspen startup, was one of the first destination ski resorts in the country, and gave people the opportunity to make a professional life in Aspen that combined their love of outdoors and sports with a career. In its first year, ASC established a chair lift, a ski patrol, and held three races —Nina Gabianelli that garnered its difficult mountain terrain some notoriety. In 1950, Aspen hosted the United States’ first world skiing competition, which attracted more than 1,500 people and gave Aspen Mountain its first taste of worldwide visibility. From that day forward the word Aspen has not only pointed to a place on a map, but a greater idea of living, an embrace of nature and time and time again, that stalwart, pioneering spirit.

AND WHEN THINGS WENT SOUTH FOR OUR MINERS, THE ASPEN PEOPLE HUNG ON.
Skiing is what attracted Klaus Obermeyer to Aspen in 1947. It was here that Klaus, determined to keep his ski school students on the slopes, devised a way to keep them warm and comfortable. He made a parka out of the down comforter his mother packed for him when he left for the United States—and thus the first down parka for skiing was born. Incredibly, Klaus also produced the first high-altitude sunscreen, two-pronged ski brakes, turtlenecks, nylon wind-shirts, mirrored sunglasses and double-lensed goggles. In 1961 the first Obermeyer factory warehouse was opened in Aspen and the main offices remain in the city to this day. “There is something about the spirit of Aspen that attracts entrepreneurs,” says Robert Yturri, SVP Global Sales, Product and Brand Management for Obermeyer. “There’s a creative and enthusiastic energy you feel in town and up high in the mountains. Klaus felt it 70 years ago knowing immediately Aspen was to be home for him personally and for his company, Obermeyer. I believe Aspen’s individualism, tough-yet-sophisticated demeanor, intelligence-blendedwith-beauty and perseverance is clearly evident in our brand and products.” That hard-working attitude endures beyond business to the very essence of “homegrown Aspen” which is our food. Lisa Houston is the publisher of Edible Aspen, a magazine that focuses on crops grown and foods made in Aspen Valley. Every winter, the magazine highlights 20 of its favorite locally made products. The magazine has also begun to curate a hand-crafted gift box of nine food artisans’ products. “The artisanal food scene in the Aspen area has exploded in recent years,” says Houston. “Consumers are more aware of—and concerned about— what they're eating more now than ever. This has fueled a movement to create high-quality artisanal products at home and it seems that, oftentimes, these products are so popular with family and friends that the artisans go public with [cont. on pg. 10] them.”

Filmmakers Tom Zuccareno and Haley Thompson turn their eye towards capturing the local homegrown food movement
How We Grow, a documentary film currently in production by local filmmakers Tom Zuccareno and Haley Thompson, tells the story of young, local, Aspen valley farmers and their quest to grow fresh, nutrient-dense food in one of the most difficult growing regions in the country. Featuring local food non-profits like Sustainable Settings, AspenTREE, Rock Bottom Ranch, CRMPI and scores of individual farmers, How We Grow documents how farmers grow community around local food, and what it takes to support them through farmers’ markets, chefs who build menus around local produce, and community members who show up to farm to table dinners. “Our intention from the start is not to make a food documentary,” says Zuccareno, an award-winning photographer, and longtime valley local who is the film’s co-producer, co-director and cinematographer. “It’s to say, ‘Hey we can all do this. If these 25 year olds can go out and grow food for these valley residents, think of what they could do with more financial, legislative and community support.’ This is a hopeful story we are trying to tell.” The film was recently bestowed with a coveted grant from The Redford Center. “To win this grant is super exciting,” says Zuccareno. “While the amount within the grant is just a fraction of the movie’s operating budget, to be recognized as one of the six projectsout of close to 300by one of the most powerful environmentalists out there, is a big boost for us.” With more than 1,000 hours of film “in the can,” the next step for How We Grow is to continue fundraising, complete the work and have it ready for film festival season in fall 2017. “We want people to know there is a bigger story behind those farmers and that food,” he says. “These farmers have identified a problem and have their hands in the dirt to do something to bring better, more nutritious food to their communities. And for consumers, to know farming is about more than just showing up to the Saturday Market with beautiful radishes, carrots and bags of fresh greens. It’s about what it takes to produce that. To show the hands that have touched everything we eat." While the film follows the local food movement, it is also a film about tenacity and the ability to cultivate food, a movement and a life from difficult circumstances. “There have been dozens of days when I show up at a farm before sunrise to shoot, and the farmers are already up and working and moving, right through sunset, harvesting in the dark to dodge the midday sun,” Zuccareno says. “I’ve been a part of many of those long, long days, and I’ve seen how much work it takes to do this.” www.howwegrowmovie.com

Today as one of Aspen Skiing Co.’s chief contract photographers, Swanson is up early and on the hill before lifts opens, skiing lines with great athletes, paying attention to the skiers, nature and landscape. “Every day is different, which is the best part,” he says. “No two days are alike.” This past summer, Swanson work was featured in a one-man show at The Art Base in Basalt, displaying 24 of his original pieces. “To see the work I’ve done over the past 10 years, all at once, and have to think of a way to filter my entire body of work into something that had one through-line, was amazing.” While ski photography is the biggest piece of the puzzle of his career, Swanson says he shoots “a little bit of everything, like a lot of people in the valley.” Swanson finds inspiration everywhere he goes, and in everything he does in the Aspen/Snowmass area, cherishing the ability to combine his two passions—art and the outdoors—into a career. “One of the things that is different about Aspen/Snowmass is how vibrant the cultural and arts scene is,” he says. “There are a lot of beautiful places in the world, but so few have the duality of the cultural and natural world like Aspen. Photographer Jeremy Swanson frames the beauty of Aspen’s natural world
Jeremy Swanson’s rise as one of Aspen’s most beloved photographers is a unique one. “Like a lot of people who moved here, I was taking pictures of weekend adventures—biking, skiing. It had always been for fun,” he says. While working at Anderson Ranch Arts Center near his home in Snowmass Village, Swanson began taking photography classes, and, he says, “little by little, I built up clients and photography for stock agencies.” Eventually, Swanson’s hobby became a full-time job, and he left his position at Anderson Ranch. The only problem was, the newborn artist, now on artists’ wages, had no way of getting himself a ski pass. So that winter, after the first autumn snow, Swanson grabbed his camera, drove over to the sign that sits along Brush Creek Road, the perfect location at which to take a photo of Snowmass Village, and he clicked. It wasn’t an outrageously different shot, but he sent it anyway to Aspen Skiing Co. asking if he could trade this and other pictures for a ski pass. “They actually said ‘Yes’,” laughs Swanson of his good fortune. What he didn’t know was how lucky his “goofy timing” had been. The skiing company had just invested money into a new website and they needed fresh content. “They gave me a shot,” he says. “It grew into something bigger each year. That’s been the key for me, having partners like Aspen Skiing Co., who are patient and allow me to grow into things, and to develop experience and some skills.”

beer competitions, winning multiple awards for their of beers at the World Beer Championship and U.S. Open Beer Championship. Since Aspen Brewing’s opening, Clauss has moved his operation from the small Mill Street location to its current tasting room at 304 E. Hopkins Ave., on the corner of Hopkins and Monarch. The brand also boasts a new production, canning and aging facility at the Airport Business Center, where they conduct limited group tours and tastings. “When I started there was no other brewer in the Aspen valley, but there was no better water source,” he says. “I knew I could make it happen. With a little bit of passion and grit anyone can make it happen in Aspen. We are a part of the next wave of people opening and owning businesses in the valley. Those who came before us are forever an inspiration and we carry that torch.” Duncan’s passion for his work and adoptive hometown does not go unnoticed. Considered one of the leading young professionals in the valley, Clauss was honored with the moniker of Winterskol King in 2015. “It still is surreal,” he says. “Part of me feels like we opened yesterday, and part of me feels like it was a lifetime ago. I literally pinch myself everyday—even if it’s a tough day and a ton of things go wrong. I leave work and still live in Aspen not only pursuing, but living a complete dream.” www.aspenbrewingcompany.com
Duncan Clauss
Aspen Brewing Company resurrects a long-standing beer making tradition in Aspen
In 2007, Duncan Clauss was just a kid out of college when he fulfilled a lifelong dream and moved to Aspen. “Aspen is one of the few mountain towns that has enough of a city, a real-world environment where I could live,” says Clauss. “I dreamed of making a long-lasting career and life here. There’s no place cooler on the planet to start and own your own brewery than Aspen, Colorado.” A year later in 2008, Clauss’ Aspen Brewing company officially fired up its tanks, but it was not the first brewery to call Aspen home. According to the ABC website, Aspen’s beer history dates back to 1885 and the original “Aspen Brewery” located on Mill Street, adjacent to the Roaring Fork River and Clauss’ first brewery location. Founded by Christian Sanders, the Sanders Brewery probably only produced one type of beer, likely a lager, and operated successfully until being purchased in 1902. Many years later there was another. Longtime visitors will remember the Flying Dog Brew Pub, opened in 1990 by George Stranahan and Richard McIntire on the Cooper Avenue Mall. After that operation was purchased and relocated to Maryland, there was a long, terrible dearth of fresh brews for the local beer connoisseur. Aspen Brewing Co. found immediate success, with both customers and national recognition. Clauss’ beers continually rack up awards at national

Aspen-based Strafe Outerwear is inspired by core life in the mountains
4 light and fast partners They are young, ambitious and most likely have climbed up and skied down the Maroon Bells before you've had your first cup of coffee in the morning. But that’s the life of Pete and John Gaston, twin brothers from Rhode Island who settled in Aspen six years ago and founded Strafe Outerwear at the base of Aspen Highlands. Having spent many weekends during college in Aspen, and becoming “obsessed” with Highland Bowl, they decided to begin their lives and growing business here. “Hiking the bowl, ripping down to the lift, and riding up to begin the lap again places unique demands on apparel in terms of breathability, weather protection, insulation, mobility and storage,” they write on the Strafe website. “(We) needed apparel that blended breathable, waterproof materials and constructions with snow-specific features and fits for moving efficiently and skiing hard all day.” For certain, the Gaston brothers don’t fall short when it comes to mountain cred. John is the U.S. Ski Mountaineering Champion, winning the Grand Targhee Classic, Heathen Challenge and the Power of Four with his brother. Pete competes in races like the Grand Traverse (Crested Butte to Aspen) and the Patrouille des Glaciers or PDG (Zermatt to Verbier), skiing first decents in Norway as well as being a certified AMGA guide.
“On the product side—we both live and breathe the outdoor product,” says Pete. Strafe’s designs and intentions are rooted in an advanced technical gear with a strong European aesthetic. “There are so many smaller, niche companies that don’t exist in the U.S. We modeled Strafe off of many of those.” Strafe designs use fabrics and technologies rarely seen in the ski world, crafted into specific styling and fit for athletes, to make life more bearable when spending hours sweating and cooling in the snow. “With ski touring you want a more comfortable, breathable, but stretchy shell jacket, that has breathable insulation so you’re warm, but you’re not restricted,” says Pete. “Being a small company we are able to use fabric and color in ways that big companies can’t develop.” The brand now occupies a space at the base of Aspen Highlands that doubles as global headquarters and retail shop. You’ll see the brand on all four mountains and in the backcountry—appealing to both the inbound skiers and hardcore mountaineers. Strafe is also sold throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and Japan. “This is a fully Aspen-derived product,” says Pete. “We’ve grown as a company and that’s because of the Aspen community. Aspen is a global mountain town, a premier destination, and great place to start a brand. Today the Aspen Valley has an abundance of homegrown foods including chocolates, granola, salad dressings, ice cream, whiskey and espresso liqueur, not to mention farms, farmers, cattlemen and ranchers. “I've seen some truly distinctive products come out in Colorado recently,” says Houston, “Popped lotus seeds, grass-fed meat and veggie bars, seasoned heirloom pumpkin seeds, and high-quality cocktail bitters, just to name a few.” For artists and craft artisans, they too look to the land for inspiration and energy to create.

“There’s a physical attraction to Aspen for many artists,” says Angie Callen, Executive Director of the Red Brick Center for the Arts, where 17 resident artists have working studios. “They find a lot of inspiration in our landscape.” Jeremy Swanson, a photographer based in Snowmass Village agrees. “I particularly love how we fit into our settings, how buildings, natural features and people fit into the mountain valley,” he says. “Scale becomes so apparent. You might drive up onto Red Mountain and look down on Aspen, where it looks so small and quaint and wonderfully cozy. In Snowmass Village, I

5 top it all off In Aspen, it’s a fashion necessity—the perfect winter hat. It is an everyday staple during Aspen’s snowy winter months, and a favorite hat of Aspen women is now made by one of their own. Kathy Stover has lived in Aspen for more than 20 years. She and her best friend Leticia (the Leti in Lêti-Kât) began the accessories and apparel company years ago with the idea to have a sustainable and ethically produced business that gives back. Always considered great at arts and crafts, she began making recycled cashmere hats for Christmas presents and her business quickly blossomed from there. “Aspen is such an incredible place of beauty,” she says. “We are always outside. I aspire to create a lifestyle brand that is gentle on the earth and influenced by all the things I do. I want to be outdoorsy and simultaneously, chic.” Stover was inspired to get into the design business after years working as a fashion model. She grew up in a household run by a creative mother where inspiration was always present, and says her creativity was sparked after working with Yves Saint Laurent, followed by an apprenticeship with a Munich-based children’s clothing designer

I could look at that for a long time.” Aspen is a very unique resort area, says Callen, because it inspires but also supports local artists. “This is a small town with big city amenities, and allows people to find a way to create art, display and sell their works.” The Red Brick, which will host the Valley Art Auction on January 17, to raise funds for its education programs, provides an affordable space for those navigating an
“learning the art of handcrafting garments uniquely and individually.” Now full owner of the brand, Stover sources her cashmere by the bale in New York. At her studio (in her home in Aspen), she sorts and refurbishes the cashmere before cutting into hat patterns. “My business is one of re-envisioning, de-constructing and making new things of beauty from the old," she says. “I cut all of the pieces myself and then work with three seamstresses handcrafting my line in the Roaring Fork Valley. We work together creating.” Each year her designs evolve. “This year I focused on emojis,” she says. “I've always been drawn to symbols and their meanings. I’ve been doing research on how emoji culture has become a new way of communicating. They have found that people respond to a smiley icon by smiling back themselves. I like the idea that through my designs I might make people smile. It was a really fun project to do.” With a handful of retailers around the country, including Performance Ski, Stover is also expanding her line to include wraps, ponchos, pillows and, next summer, t-shirts; a portion of her sales going to non-profits and causes for which Stover advocates. "Right now Lêti-Kât is a grass roots company,” Stover says. “During my busy season, I work really hard. It is a lifestyle choice. I play hard too. I spend time outside every day. artist’s life in a luxury resort community. “I’ve lived in a big city,” says Callen. “Life is different here. Here, we work to live, we are more hands on and live to be active and less idle. We always need some kind of mental stimulation, and have a need to create. We do it because we must, creatively, but also create work so we can live here. We create our own opportunities as artists.” Exposure for art and artists also comes from the people, often from larger cities who provide exposure for local artists and craftspeople.

Twenty-one years ago, a woman named Bebe Schweppe had a vision for Aspen as home for an innovative, professional ballet company—an outgrowth of the ballet school which she founded. Schweppe reached out and recruited Tom Mossbrucker and JeanPhilippe Malaty, professional ballet dancers ready for transition, to execute her vision for a ballet company, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. The spirit of Aspen is reflected in the athleticism of its company, says Malaty. “They could dance anywhere they want, but they come here because we have the environment and the surroundings our dancers tend to be in love with. They love to be in nature, and therefore have a more extended, physical body and approach.” In addition to the type of dancers the ballet attracts, what truly sets the ballet apart is its dedication to making art right here in Aspen. While other non-profits in the area excel at bringing outside art, artists and performances into Aspen, it is the ballet that trains, houses and produces ballet at home. “We are probably one of the only art products that is actually made in Aspen, and goes elsewhere with the name of Aspen,” says Malaty. “We are always pushing our art form, and it is very much in the pioneering spirit
nature and what is created here, that makes it possible for people to make art, business, food and a place to call home in Aspen. “Because people in Aspen are mostly from somewhere else, we’ve developed a large footprint of audience and fans,” says JP Malaty, Executive Director of the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. “We have dedicated supporters in cities around the world who are proud to share their cities with this little gem that comes from Aspen. We have a very strong national network by being here in a market with so many second homeowners.”

That’s how being based here influences the company specifically.” Throughout the year, ASFB moves between its two homes of Aspen and Santa Fe, New Mexico, a dual-city relationship that allows the company to broaden its scope and provide revenue diversification. If Aspen visitors miss December’s “The Nutcracker,” or performances over President’s Day Weekend, or in April, there is a good chance they will find the company on tour in cities around the country like Miami, Los Angeles, Palm Desert, Scottsdale, Philadelphia or in New York City, and at festivals such as American Dance Festival, Harris Theater for Music and Dance, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, or venues including the Joyce Theater, The Kennedy Center, Saratoga Performing Arts Center, and Wolf Trap. ASFB now sits at the vanguard of its field, brandishing a strong national reputation, but the success of ASFB could not have been predicted, says Malaty, because “we didn’t have a plan to begin with.” Instead Mossbrucker and Malaty seized opportunities when they presented themselves, set goals and were steadfast in their vision to help them raise this arts organization from a blank slate to a powerful company away from the centers of the dance world. “There was no pressure,” says Malaty. “We had the freedom to do something different, creative and new.” www.aspensantafeballet.com

Julie Levin, herbalist and owner of Leaf People recalls time recently when jewelry designer John Atencio asked for help with his problematic skin. Levin picked out a regime for him including Leaf People aloe lavender wash, cucumber toner, facial mist, melon seed, vitamin K face oil and radiance face cream. Antencio called a few weeks later noting the positive results, and offered to become an ambassador for her brand. It is this willingness by Aspenites, whether natives or newcomers, second-homeowners or day trippers, to support and share their love of place,

For her formulations that include Ayurvedic and Chinese plants, they are sourced through reputable growers she knows throughout North America. “I approach everything backed by a lot of studies and a strong background in science,” says Levin. “I look at studies of plants, work from clinical studies for efficacy levels and then go beyond that. We use 40 to 45 percent pure plant extract in our face serum and we see real results from real people.” Levin also works with estheticians, locally at the Aspen Club, and Sherry Achi, and in other locations such as Los Angeles and Seattle, to help develop and fine tune new products in terms of absorption rate, smell, and effectiveness in spa settings. For a company that has received so much from the earth, Levin is also committed to the health of the world.
