| SAM HARVEY | “I like to coax invention,” says Sam Harvey. His M.O. as a teacher is a fitting canvas for all the other parts of his creative life: as an artist, longtime board member for arts organizations, and co-founder of the Harvey/ Meadows Art Gallery. With his business partner Allegheny Meadows, he established Aspen’s only extant artist-run gallery and has found a strong local following among patrons who appreciate their mash-up of emerging and established contemporary artists. Sometimes it takes educating, which is no problem for this natural connector. “I want my students to be engaged in the process of learning what’s important to them.” The same might be said of his clients. Ph

Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley offer more enticements in a single summer day than just about anywhere outside of a major metro area. And with the town’s small radius, it’s tempting to try to pack it all in. But, not so fast. As locals will tell you, there is a way to take advantage of the immense offerings without taking a single moment for granted. Our thorough download on the summer season, and the inside track from ten Aspen influencers, puts you in good hands. These arbiters share how they size up the season and filter their results to make the most of the long, green days of summer. To a person, they admit that there is no choice other than to be choosy. Be picky, as Isa Catto Shaw suggests. Discriminating. Discerning. Selective. Jim Horowitz owns up: “We can all only do so much.” So choose personally, and then relax: the secret to Oliver’s question lies not in what we choose, but in how we pay attention.

sio

Poet Mary Oliver, in her ode to the summer day, had it right. Could there be a more treasured or ephemeral resource than time? It’s why you’re here, right? We all are. Whether exploring Aspen’s natural world, her cultural milieu, the local community, or all of the above, we’ve chosen the specific coordinates where we want to expend our bounty. Right Here. Which begets 1 another question. What to do about Right Now?

I don’t know a lot about dance, but I know when I like it and when I don’t. k All summer “Aspen Art Museum does me good. I know how controversial it is, but Heidi [Zuckerman]’s programming totally works for me: pretty contemporary, pretty radical, a lot to chew, or not.”

| MICHELE KILEY | “Fiercely Local,” the business moniker behind Michele Kiley’s hospitality hits, might as well be her motto. The proprietress of Justice Snow’s and the former Cheese Shop celebrates all things local at her restaurant in the historic Wheeler Opera House (itself one of Aspen’s most local structures). “Kiley,” as she is known to friends, invites changemakers from the Valley—artists, farmers, poets, environmentalists, musicians, nonprofit creatives, storytellers, and entrepreneurs—into the parlor to be part of the dialogue. Her goal is to hold space for community building and social change—over delicious vittles and fine drink, of course. “The mandate for the restaurant is to be inclusive,” she says of the City-owned property. And she means it. ey

IT’S A SURE SIGN THAT SUMMER IS UNDERWAY WHEN THE FARMERS AND ARTISTS ARRIVE AT THE ASPEN SATURDAY MARKET. Saturday Market. Now in its 18th year, this weekend mainstay sells only goodness made or grown in Colorado {Saturdays: 6/13–10/10}. If you can’t get into the sold-out Food & Wine Classic {6/17–19} to see local cheese goddess Laura Werlin, check out the homegrown talent and eats at some of the valley’s locavore haunts: Justice Snow’s and Meat & Cheese in Aspen and Silo in Carbondale. For farm-to-table aficionados—and those quick to snap up tickets—the valley offers many

opportunities to dine at the source, including fivecourse dinners at ACES’s Rock Bottom Ranch {6/25, 7/22–23, 8/13} and the full moon ranch dinners (beer pairings with chef Mark Hardin 7/19) and Harvest Festival {9/17–18} at Sustainable Settings. Families can learn about their connection to the local food system at Aspen T.R.E.E., with offerings that include Earth Keepers {M–F during the summer}, a youth empowerment program

The five-star hotel also opens its garden gates to visitors during weekly tours with a resident gardener. Guests, hydrated with beverages featuring freshly-muddled garden herbs, can take in the living wall {opening 6/10} and courtyard perennial and clipping beds.

ART

The biggest wow in the summer arts season is Anderson Ranch’s 50th anniversary milestone. Founded in 1966 by ceramic artist Paul Soldner, the pioneering art center’s yearlong celebration will hit its stride during a week of special events, exhibitions, and workshops {July 17–22} featuring national art innovators Tom Sachs, Fred Tomaselli, Carrie Mae Weems, and others. Most events are free, including a concert by Jamestown Revival on Snowmass Village’s Fanny Hill. Throughout the summer, ARAC continues its half-century tradition of “art, inspiration and community” by hosting their signature workshops with prominent artistinstructors, a dialogue program on contemporary art and artmaking, the popular Featured Artists & Conversations series {7/7–8/11}, and an exhibition Luxury Property Collection | SUMMER 2016

of local artmakers co-presented with Colorado Mountain College {6/14–8/12 at CMC}. The work of local artists can also be spotted at The Art Base (formerly The Wyly) in downtown Basalt. Providing a “base of operations” for artists who live in the valley, the community art center leaves its mark with the Drawing Exhibition featuring local all-stars Richard Carter, James Surls, Jody Guralnick, and Chris Hassig at the Art Base Annex {6/10–7/2 with an Art Talk on 6/30}. Carbondale, a “Colorado Creative District,” has become HQ for many artists who have grown a vibrant hub of imagination in the former potatoranching town. Anchors include The Launchpad (home to Carbondale Council on the Arts and Humanities and Dance Initiative), First Fridays, SAW (Studio for Arts + Works), and the nearby Powers Art Center, a stunning monument to Jasper Johns’ works on paper. The epicenter of contemporary art is the Aspen Art Museum, housed downtown in an 33,000-sf structure designed by Pritzker-winning architect Shigeru Ban. The AAM ramps it up with three new solo shows, including Gabriel Orozco {7/29–12/18} and Alan Shields {6/24–10/2}, joining an eye-catching outdoor sculpture installation by Lynda Benglis that continues through October. Painter and filmmaker Julian Schnabel {7/31} will be one of four artists detailing his work during the July–August Artist Talks, while the museum’s roof-deck will play stage to live music and movies

Sibling natives Mia and Reuben Sadowsky could be operating at the cutting edge of anywhere, but they’re staking their claim in Aspen. Reuben is a cofounder of Gravity Productions, the crew responsible for beyond-hip events like The Palace, a pop-up nightclub, gallery, elixir bar, and artist hangout that stirred the community for two months this winter. Mia just launched the Heir Vintage fashion truck, which will be on the festival circuit and at Basalt’s Colorado Goes Bazaar this summer. The two innovators recognize Aspen’s global cachet and hope their entrepreneurial spirit will strike gold at home. “If we can insert our brand into [Aspen’s],” says Ruben, “hopefully it can spread far and wide.”

It wouldn’t be summer without the region’s lively outdoor celebrations that transform the verdant Elk mountains and Colorado’s bluebird skies into stunning backdrops for creative community events. New to town, Snowmass Rendevous queues up the summer season with a “bRUNch trail run” and beer festival, featuring 5K and 10K warm-ups to a buffet at Venga Venga. The afternoon wraps with a craft beer tasting celebrating the wares of 50+ breweries {6/11}. Billed as an “all-out celebration of mindful living,” international festival maker Wanderlust decamps to Snowmass Village for four days of yoga, live music, guided adventures, lectures, and organic food {6/30–7/3}. The eclectic lineup of artists, including MC Yogi, Kathryn Budig, and Xavier Rudd, sets the stage for body-bending, mind-blowing fun. Not to be outdone, Wilderness Workshop’s annual community shindig, Wildfest, will be held for the first time at Owl Farm in Woody Creek, the legendary spread of the late, great gonzo

The Roaring Fork Valley is a magnet for ideas, pulling authors, thought leaders, innovators, and intellectuals from around the globe into the town’s gravitational field. From Tibetan Monks at Aspen Art Museum {7/20–24} to cutting edge astrophysicists at the Aspen Center for Physics {most Thursdays, June to September} to Aspen Words’ resident writers at the Woody Creek Community Center {6/14, 7/19, 8/16}, the valley positively vibrates with inspiration. Aspen Summer Words, billed as the “Rocky Mountain gateway to the literary world,” is a jewel box for the nation’s best writing. Literary luminaries, including David Lipsky and Maria Semple, as well as Ann Patchett and Lucy Kalanithi (both at the Aspen Words’ 6/22 summer benefit), shine in this weeklong wordfest {6/19–24}.

is key. Isa Catto Shaw and Daniel Shaw “stay open artistically” by traveling the globe, hiking their backyard mountains, and diving into the Roaring Fork Valley’s “aquifer” of culture with their two children in tow. The distillation of their experiences expresses itself across various media: in the paintings, words, and dinner parties they create, as well as the organizations they champion. Isa works as an artist, blogger, and gardener while her husband plies his craft as a journalist, musician, and host of Aspen Public Radio’s “Check, 1, 2.” Together, they are partners and hosts of Aspen Words’ writers in residence program; curators of the Jessica Catto Dialogue series at ACES; and generous philanthropists to many local arts and environmental nonprofits. It’s the “intersection of people, of ideas, of organizations” that keeps them going, says Daniel. “We love to see that and we love to inspire that around here.”

A 43-year tradition, the Snowmass Rodeo is Colorado’s longest running roundup. Every Wednesday evening {6/8–8/17} visitors thrill to saddle bronc and bull riding, team roping, and barrel racing, while children can participate in the Calf Scramble and Mutton Bustin’, and all can cap the evening with a sing-along around the campfire. The Carbondale Mountain Fair, now in its 45th iteration, shows off the town’s vibrant community spirit. Pie-baking and wood-splitting contests are beloved traditions within this festival of live music, performing arts, family activities, cycling shenanigans, and homemade wares {7/29–31}.

| PAIGE PRICE | On stage or off, theater has been Paige Price’s lead role for more than 30 years. She’s starred as a Broadway performer, a union leader, and for the past eight years as Executive Artistic Director of Theatre Aspen. The busy exec toggles between New York and Aspen as she juggles her roles as actor, activist, and arts administrator. “I always marvel at the richness and the variety of the culture in Aspen,” says Paige, “and it inspires me to keep Theatre Aspen moving forward and striving for excellence.” | THE SOURCE | A daily read of The Aspen Times, ACRA’s website, the City of Aspen’s weekly “What’s Happening at City Hall” blast, and “a pretty busy social life.” | THE FILTER | “I keep all of the events I want to see posted on my old-fashioned corkboard next to my desk. As the date nears I try to protect that time. Usually obligation wins out, but I keep them nearby as a reminder of what else is out in the world.” | THE DOWNLOAD | July 4 “I never miss the 4th of July parade— to me it’s the best of Aspen. I can’t explain it to people who don’t see it how much the community participates, how much it preserves the small town.” k July 14 Puccini’s “La bohème” presented by the Aspen Music Festival at the Wheeler Opera House. “I have never been to one of those and I am going to get there if it kills me.” k July 19 Paul Griner, Aspen Words’ writer-in-residence at WC3: “I love short stories (fits my short attention span and ‘read on the subway’ lifestyle)!”

Nature lovers can get their fix at the free Jessica Catto Dialogue series at ACES. The summer lineup is small but mighty, with environmental visionaries Jason Mark, Editor-in-Chief of Sierra Magazine {6/21}, and Michael Curtin, America’s foremost leader in rebuilding urban food systems {8/9}. JUSTICE SNOW’S RESTAURANT IS THE CLEARINGHOUSE FOR LOCAL CHANGE MAKERS. showcase, the Poetry Brothel, Writ Large live storytelling events, and ShaktiTalks dialogue series—the restaurant dishes up a strong menu of humanity with a hefty side of social justice. The heavyweight category in the cultural ring is occupied by the Aspen Ideas Festival. The Aspen Institute’s iconic event, which sells out annually, is a platform for 300+ world leaders who gather to discuss today’s most pressing issues. The Festival’s ten tracks will dive into such areas as the age of insecurity, reimagining capitalism, sex in America, and the future of food, with speakers running the gamut from Laura Bush to Dan Savage {6/26–7/2}.

FILM

While TripAdvisor’s top ten things to do in Aspen are filled with mountain adventures, sometimes there’s nothing like a dark room, a comfortable seat, and the anticipation of storytelling in motion to ease the soul. Thanks to AspenFilm, the region has become a cinephile’s mecca. The nonprofit organization, which aims to “enlighten, enrich, educate, and entertain through film,” is partnering again with The Aspen Institute to present the “NEW VIEWS Documentaries and Dialogues” series at Paepcke Auditorium. The much anticipated “Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise” will screen on July 25. Movies at the Museum will return for the summer with free films and free beer (yes, you read that right) on the Aspen Art Museum’s rooftop. The film series {6/25, 7/1, 7/27, and 8/26}, viewed from beanbag chairs and lounge seating under the open skies, is linked to summer exhibitions on view.

Come August, the Wheeler Opera House will present MountainSummit Film Festival {8/24–28}, featuring nonfiction stories about environmental, cultural, climbing, political, and social justice issues. This summer’s edition, whose schedule is to be announced in July, will celebrate the 100th birthday of the National Parks Service. And all summer long, blockbusters and indie picks will be on screens at Aspen’s Isis Theatre and the Crystal Theatre in Carbondale.

PERFORMING ARTS

The performing arts get festive this season with a milestone anniversary and a feel-good theatrical opener. Aspen Santa Fe Ballet turns 20 and is celebrating with world premieres, audience favorites, and visiting companies. ASFB will debut Alejandro Cerrudo’s Little mortal jump {7/8, 7/12} and Jir^í Kylián’s Sleepless {8/16, 8/27}; say goodbye to veteran ballerina Samantha Klanac Campanile, retiring after 15 seasons with the company {8/27}; and welcome three standouts: the hip, contemporary L.A. Dance Project {8/4}, Paul Taylor Dance Company {8/13}, a giant in the history of modern dance in America, and the fiery Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe {7/23}. Theatre Aspen is also partying like it’s 2016. The repertory company opens its summer season {6/24–8/20} with the mega-hit ABBA musical Mamma Mia!, sponsored in part by Douglas Elliman. Quick on its heels is Jonathan Tolis’ irresistible one-man comedy Buyer & Cellar

| JIM HOROWITZ | Aspen culture is in Jim Horowitz’s DNA. “Just a kid” when his mom discovered Aspen in the early 60s (an appealing escape from pre-air conditioning Miami Beach summers), he grew up with artists of the Aspen Institute and Aspen Music Festival in the kitchen. There, in a modest summer cabin on Red Mountain, his restaurateur father would whip up post-concert spreads and informal salons. So when it came time for the professional pianist to pick a home for the mountain jazz festival he wanted to establish—now one of the premier jazz institutions in the U.S.—he knew it had to be in Aspen. Twenty-six years later, Jim presides over Jazz Aspen Snowmass and the organization’s two flagship festivals each June and Labor Day. With these blockbuster events bookending the summer season, Jim and JAS have become a part of Aspen’s genetic material. Photo: Douglas Elliman

MUSIC

Aspen music. With more than 500 concerts over the three verdant months of summer, music lovers have no shortage of options. Dubbed “one of the most rocking small rooms in the country” by Rolling Stone, Belly Up is Aspen’s go-to spot for live music. The 450-seat house regularly draws major headliners—from Jane’s Addiction to Tiesto to the Flaming Lips to Chris Isaak, who returns to shake the rafters on August 1. This powerhouse club has something going on almost every night of the week. Aspen Music Festival and School debuts its 68th season {6/30–8/21} with the grand opening of a new Harry Teague-designed state-of-the-art campus in the Castle Creek Valley. It is the creative

Season high notes include performances by Renée Fleming {7/3}, Sarah Chang {7/28}, Aspen Opera Center {July and August}, and the Emerson String Quartet celebrating their 40th anniversary in concert {7/19}. AMFS teams with Jazz Aspen Snowmass to present Motown legend Smokey Robinson {7/2}. The R&B icon is a highlight of the JAS Café series, including a dozen and a half intimate shows throughout Aspen: at The Little Nell Hotel, upstairs at the Aspen Art Museum, and, new this year, the Cooking School of Aspen. season with their blockbuster festivals: the June and Labor Day Experiences. The June opener {6/24–26} at the Benedict Music Tent lights up with a JAS first, the legendary Diana Ross, followed by Grammy winner Sheryl Crow and a jazz/ funk double bill with Marcus Miller and Booker T. Jones. The Labor Day Festival {9/2–4} raises the bar once again with performances by the Killers, Duran Duran, Thievery Corporation, Corrine Bailey Rae, and musical genius Stevie Wonder whose first Aspen appearance closes the festival. If you’re in the Patron area, swing by the Douglas Elliman VIP tent for a specialty cocktail and delicious bites. JAS is also behind the Snowmass Summer of Free Music Series, now in its 25th year {6/11– 8/11}. Locals flock to Fanny Hill with picnic blankets and kids in tow to see big name artists in a variety of genres, like Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Taj Mahal {6/23} who returns to the valley in conjunction with AREDAY’s renewable energy summit.
