Each year, the Foundation facilitates an academic orthopaedic sports medicine and trauma surgery fellowship. Two of the world’s brightest new orthopaedic surgeons are selected from the most prestigious orthopaedic residency programs to spend one year in subspecialty orthopaedic training. The Foundation implements programs, activities and lectures in sports safety, injury prevention, rehabilitation, sports nutrition, and specific topics such as osteoporosis prevention, dealing with arthritis, understanding joint replacement, helmet use in sports, staying active with age and much more.
By stimulating and sponsoring appropriate orthopaedic research, the Foundation initiates the development of new ideas and approaches to sports medicine. Ongoing research projects change how orthopaedic care is delivered throughout the world.
The Foundation facilitates an academic orthopaedic sports medicine, trauma, and surgery fellowship following the strict guidelines of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the federal council which reviews all fellowships in medicine and surgery.

The physicians and staff of Aspen Orthopaedic Associates support the Roaring Fork Valley and beyond. Whether covering World Cup ski rates, local high school football and hockey games, the 24 Hours of Moab mountain bike race, volunteering for Aspen Skiing Company’s ski patrol or examining patients at a community health fair, we’re committed to supporting a healthy and active community. Key sponsorships include Aspen Valley Ski & Snowboard Club (and a recent head-trauma study), continuing education courses for local physical therapists, and athletic trainer programs at area high schools.
We are proud to help people throughout the world. Robert Derkash, MD provided on-site medical care to Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, just after the devastating 2010 earthquake that left 300,000 people injured. Dr. Derkash has also volunteered at the Sihanouk Hospital Center of Hope in Pnom Phen, Cambodia. N. Lindsay Harris, MD has traveled to Bhutan, a kingdom in the Himalayas adjacent to Nepal, India, China. He spent six weeks with Orthopaedic Overseas performing orthopaedic surgeries and teaching. Karen Eberhardt, RN volunteers on the medical staff team for the Mountain Bike World Championships treating USA Cycling athletes.
STARTING IN 2002, MARK PURNELL, MD, TITO LIOTTA, MD, LINDSAY HARRIS, MD, AND LEELEE VON STADE, MD STARTED THE ASPEN-BARILOCHE MEDICAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM. IN CONJUNCTION WITH ASPEN SISTER CITIES AND ASPEN VALLEY HOSPITAL, THIS PROGRAM IS DEDICATED TO IMPROVING PATIENT CARE AT THE RAMÓN CARRILLO HOSPITAL IN BARILOCHE, ARGENTINA THROUGH EDUCATION, PHILANTHROPY AND CULTURAL EXCHANGES.
