INSPIRATION Good design is contingent upon both creativity and discipline. Creativity is not the product of creative genius, but rather the outcome of the ability to think in an unconstrained and imaginative way. The ability to experiment, fail, and learn. When this type of creativity is coupled with a strong design discipline, the result is an inspired design. I encourage my design team to think broadly and to consider the big picture first. Details and nuance will follow if a good base understanding is developed early. Once there is a foundation to build upon the process of communication and idea development can be systemized in order to produce consistently quality design products.

SUSTAINABILITY Understanding all the elements and impacts of the variables of a project is foundational to developing a sustainable plan. The features of a project, how they overlap and interact with one another, and the ways in which they influence each other are pieces of the sustainability puzzle that can not afford to be overlooked. I approach sustainability by identifying the long term goals first. What are the long and short term objectives? Financial sustainability, social sustainability, environmental sustainability, or maintenance sustainability are all objectives that can become the driving goals of a project.

MOTIVATION Advancement in both a personal and a professional sense is dependant upon the drive and motivation to achieve more, to step beyond. My chosen perspective as it relates to each task and project is that I will perform it better and more efficiently than the time before. I choose to motivate myself through a series of goal setting exercises that stretch and challenge me. It’s about the process of making one thing into something else. About looking past what something is, to what it can be. My management philosophy is centered around the idea of appropriately generating motivation for the design or communication team. In my experience, enthusiasm is contagious. I lead by setting an example of investment in a project and then allowing for team members to explore a subject in a way that comes naturally to them. Mistakes and errors are a part of that process and I encourage risk taking in design because even if the product is not the solution that ends up making the cut, the process of trial and failure demonstrates a valuable piece of motivation.

I emphasis the value of story telling as a communication tool. Develop a good backstory. frame the characters well, identify the needs of the audience, and allow for the arc of a good story. The rules and strategies of communication transcend many disciplines. Working in collaboration with design teams, clients, stakeholder groups, consultants, and community members are all key skills that help me to build an effective and impactful communication plan.
