SITE

A problem with the area is that there is a lack of community and connection between not only the residents and artists but a relation to the overall Houston area. The site is within a unknown area of art and the need to activate the site for its Artists and Residents is needed but also to let this site be known and be part of the Houston Culture

The site is mainly tranversed through the main street, of Edward Street with the parking lots that lay on either side of the site being means of connecting the Site to main roads of Sawyer and Silver Streets. The site also allows itslef to adhere to being a location where people from First and Sixth WArds can interact as well as Visiting Artists can communicate with the Current Artists of Winter and Silver Street Studios.

The site was divided according to the general circulation that connects the Site to different areas of its surroundings. This creats a sense of connectivity and makse the Site a destination.

Program was divided to accomadate both the Resient and the Artist that the Site adheared to. But also gave oppurtunities to allow other Artists around Houston.

SITE

The context of the site is generally horizontal with the long side facing North and South. This and the site’s dock high foundation can be used to form another means of connectivity to the site and give context to the building

The 2 pieces of Program (Residential Program and Artist Program) was then laid on the site according to the circulation of the Site. this created a defined entrance to the site as well as adhere to the general horizontal layout of the surroudning buildings.

The bars of Program was then shifted to create a view to the Public Space that is remaining in the Site. This allowed to create spaces within the breaking points of the bars where they separate or join together.

To reconnect the Artists and the Residents of the surrounding areaback with the Houston culture, the Site will be the bridge that connects them. This is solved by creating this space to allow both the nieghboring people and others to interactwith onanother. Moreover, through the use of a Viewing Platform a person can stand and take advantage of the site’s natural view to the Houston Skyline

COMMUNITY & MIXED-USE DESIGN

EMANCIPATION THEATER The idea behind this design is to reactivate the area and to bring back what the Dowling Corridor had in the past. The site once held a theater and a restaurant as a place for entertainment for the community. This historical context is the driving force that created the Program for the design. As for the general function and form, the idea of having the theaters being these shifting masses looming over the restaurant and the pop-up shops was another factor. The lifting of the theaters provided enough space for the restaurant and shops to be seen and reactivate the Dowling Corridor.

CONNECTION TO EMANCIPATION PARK

CONNECTION TO RESIDENTIAL

CONNECTION TO DOWLING CORRIDOR

The idea behind the project was centered around the design being the bridge that connects the community with the rest of the Dowling Corridor in attempts to reactivate the area.

With the idea of having the Dowling Corridor grow with more buildings, an internal focus of the design became another concept for the design. The sides of the site will be left for more structural or service areas of the building.

For the overall design to anchor itself and be integrated into the Dowling Corridor, an direct path through the site was created for this connection. This path became the spine of the design general circulation.

The resulting division becomes the 2 Theaters for the design. One of the blocks will be pushed back to define an entrance for the building.

To connect the 2 Theaters a bridge was incorporated into the design to be the connecting piece that units them.

In order reactivate the Dowling Corridor, the addition of a restaurant and pop-up shops were included. In doing so, the theaters rose upward to give the lower level the square footage for the shops and restaurant.

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN

THE VERTICAL METROPOLIS A city of cities, the Vertical Metropolis takes place in the distant future where all man’s infrastructure has been recycled for a new era of living. Towers sprout from the earth housing all the necessities of life needed for this new, wise society of people. Utilizing passive and efficient design, the Vertical Metropolis compacts itself to no longer harm the earth while creating a better living condition for its inhabitants.

A CENTURY HAS PASSED, AND THE PARASITIC CITIES OF OLD HAVE BECOME ALL BUT FORGOTTEN.

IMAGINE OUR WORLD TORN APART BY WAR AND POLLUTION. YOU‛RE STANDING IN THE MIDST OF FIRE AND BRIMSTONE, WITH A DYING FLOWER IN YOUR HAND.

NEW CITIES HAVE GROW UTILIZING WHAT HUMANITY KNEW ALL ALONG BUT WAS TOO STUBBORN TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT.

. SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES AND EFFICIENT DESIGN ECAME THE FOCUS THESE FUTURE CITIES

TAKING A DEEP BREATH OF SULFUR, YOU VOW TO PUT A STOP TO THIS BY NEVER LETTING IT HAPPEN.

URBAN DENSITY THIS ALLOWS PEOPLE TO ACCESS DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE CITY WITH THE LEAST AMOUNT OF TRAVEL. BY STACKING MULTIPLE PROGRAMS IN A SINGLE STRUCTURE CONFIDES THE CITY AND DECREASES THE AMOUNT OF ENVIRONMETAL IMPACT THE CITY WILL HAVE.

VERTICAL CIRCULATION WITH THE RESULT OF HAVING DIFFERENT PROGRAMS STACKED ON TOP OF ONE ANOTHER, VERTICAL MEANS OF CIRCULATION WILL BE THE OPTIMAL CHOICE. PLATFORMS WILL ASCEND AND DESCEND THROUGHOUT THE DIFFERENT LEVELS ALLOWING PEOPLE TO ACCESS DIFFERENT AREAS.

THEY MERGED THE ENVIRONMENT WITH THE URBAN LANDSCAPES. SOCIETY FOCUSED ON THE POWER OF PUBLIC SPACES TO CREATE A BETTER LIVING CONDITION.

ADVANCEMENT IN TOWER CONSTRUCTION ALLOWED THE DIFFERENT PROGRAMMATIC SPACES TO BE THE VERY STRUCTURE OF WHICH TO BUILD THEM.

PUBLIC SPACE PUBLIC SPACE WILL BE THE MAIN FOCUS OF EACH STRUCTURE. OPEN PLAZAS AND BRIDGES WILL HOLD LANDSCAPE DESIGN TO BRING THE ENVIRONMENT INTO EACH SPACE.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSE THE STRUCTURES WILL BE AN ABSTRACT REPRESENTATION OF A TOWER AS THE FACADE IS BROKEN BY THE GROWING PROGRAM. THESE OPENINGS ALLOW SUNLIGHT AND WIND TO ENTER THE OPEN PUBLIC SPACES INSIDE. PLATFORMS RISE ABOVE THE GROUND AND THE TOWERS ARE CONFIDED AS TO LIMIT THEIR HORIZONTAL GROWTH ALONG THE SURFACE.

EVENTUALLY, THE CITIES AND THE TOWERS MERGED INTO A SINGLE ENTITY. THE GOVERNMENT BOUNDED THEMSELVES TO A SUSTAINABLE LIMIT FOR THEIR RESPECTIVE POPULATION.

ALL IN THE EFFORTS TO REDUCE THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ON THE VERY EARTH THEY STAND ON.

GROWING PROGRAM EACH STRUCTURE WILL BE COMPOSED OF THE PROGRAM THAT IT CONTAINS. THIS ALLOWS THE PROGRAMS THEMSELVES TO FORM A SUPERSTRUCTURE. WHEN NEEDED, MORE PROGRAMS CAN BE ADDED TO THE MANY LEVELS AND FACES OF EACH PROGRAM OR STRUCTURE. * MERZBOU BY KURT SCHWITTERS
