What is a Music Genre?

SLIDESMANIA.COM

A music genre is a conventional category that identifies pieces of music as belonging to a shared tradition or set of conventions. It is to be distinguished from musical form and musical style, although in practice these terms are sometimes used interchangeably. Music can be divided into different genres in several ways. The artistic nature of music means that these classifications are often arbitrary and controversial, and some genres may overlap. There are several academic approaches to genres.

Classical music is the Western world's formal musical tradition, which is distinguished from Western folk music and popular music traditions. Modern musicologists often classify it into eras, which began in Western Europe with the music of the early Christian Church. Classical (1750–1820), Renaissance (1400–1600), Baroque (1600–1750), and Medieval (500–1400)

Pop music is a popular genre of music (from classical or art music and folk music). Its stylistic characteristics, such as a danceable rhythm or beat, set it apart from other subgenres. The lyrics of pop songs are frequently emotional, relating to love or dance, and are reminiscent of Karen Carpenter and Roberta Flack.
