01 Buriton Flush

From conception, it felt essential that the Buriton Flush was beautiful from every angle. Simplicity in design, geometry uninterupted.

I was project lead for this design brief which became a part of the Vaughan Autumn 2022 product collection.

Brief.

Champion the natural alabaster material.

The organic nature, distinctive patterns, and translucency of the alabaster material contributes to it’s expanding presence in the luxury lighting sector.

A wall fixtures cannot protrude more than 4 inches from the wall.

ADA-approved lights for the US contract market must have a thin profile for narrow spaces, such as, hallways, aisles, passageways, and bathrooms. This ensures they do not intrude into areas where people walk with other means.

Moodboard & idea generation.

Prototyping & testing.

Quick, to scale prototypes allowed us to evaluate and modify the design. The finial was not needed due to sufficient clamping with buttons. Adding a flat edge to the alabaster bowl increased the surface area for clamping. By discarding the mouseholes, removed the need for orientation during installation.

We found that the washers were visible to customers

Sampling to trial suitable lampholder build-up and encapsulation

Tightening mechanism was challenging for installers, requiring an extra threaded washer

Slots unnecessary feature due to supplier accuracy of alabaster bowl

V21582 - M5 x 27mm Countersunk Flat Head Brass Screw

V1640 - BS EN ISO 7045 - M3 x 12 - Z - 12C- MSTEEL

Design for manufacture.

I designed cost-effective metalwork, reinforcing sheet metal with welded ribs to keep manufacturing costs low. This allowed for sourcing of highquality ‘A’ Grade alabaster.

To future-proof the design, I opted for E14 bulbs over GX53’s, ensuring ample internal space for bulb encapsulation and enabling potential conversion for bathroom use.

Final design.

Only revealing purposeful brass work, enhanced the beauty of the alabaster. The Buriton is a practical and contemporary piece that attracts attention from both contract and residential markets. I designed with versitilty for both wall and ceiling illumination, in mind.

02 Bordon Reading Light

The Brief:

Develop upon an existing wall light into a minimalist flush-to-the-wall fixture to satisfy contemporary clientelle.

1 year 2023 Vaughan Ltd

Product development.

Addressing wiring access solutions involved significant development, exploring diverse hooking and threading methods for installation. The product faced difficult constraints due to having numerous components, and needing to be compatible with both EU and US wall boxes.

CAD played a crucial role when designing within these limitations. Simulations ensured the assembly process was suitable before commiting to tooling costs.

Prototyping & sampling.

During the prototyping and sampling stages, hooking and threading methods were abandoned due to misalignment and installation issues, necessitating the use of fixing screws. To preserve a clean aesthetic, a magnetic rim was developed to conceal any visible screws.

Final design.

03 Hushies Noise Protecting Headband

Introducing a fully integrated noiseprotecting headband for babies and toddlers—blocking harmful noises while allowing meaningful sounds.

Ideal for metropolitan families, it protects little ones’ hearing in the city, supporting their healthy development.

Situation.

Noise pollution, often overlooked despite its significant health implications, is considered the ‘silent killer’ of the 21st century.

WHO estimates that 10% of the global population is currently exposed to noise levels that could result in hearing impairment.

BABIES/ CHILDREN AT RISK DUE TO DEVELOPMENT

ADAPTABILITY & FUNCTION IS KEY

LACK OF AWARENESS

IMPORTANCE OF SLEEPSOOTHED BY WHITE NOISE

Concept development.

Sketching and prototyping exploration in the early stages of the design process was pivotal in developing a successful product. I was able to have a ongoing feedback with groups of parents to inform design decisions.

The technology.

The Hushies app provides real-time noise monitoring with customizable Decibel Scale-based cancellation. It allows for playing soothing sounds, lullabies, and personalized voice recordings through headband speakers. Emphasizing aesthetics, the app lets parents buy new fabric ‘Hushibands’ for growing children, aligning with seasons and trends, fostering brand affinity for those valuing both functionality and style in baby products.

The band.

Focusing on the user interaction was essential for developing the band. Ergonomics, anthropometrics, and child safety were considered carefully. Various headband shapes were explored for a proper fit, and curating a refined selection of natural, breathable materials was essential. Through testing the band, I developed a full set of bands ranging from the ages 0-4. The product features an elasticated band for growth, with removable internal speakers for ease of washing and personalisation.

User journey.

04 Flint Table Light

Inspired by the local nature, this design originated from raw flint found in the countryside. Emphasizing the authenticity of materials and craftsmanship, I sculpted a free-form piece that underwent a lostwax casting process, preserving every intricate detail of the form.

Ideation.

I developed a sculptural table light unique with its organic form and lumpy features. To conceptualise the design, I used charcoal and pencils to sketch profiles, this process helped determine the density of the lumps and the distribution of weight, contributing to the overall aesthetic and balance.

Modelling.

Prototype iterations, developing scale and texture

3D scanning and modifying using CAD, 3D printing and refining the final model

05 Bespoke Cinema Seating

The Brief:

To design and manufature a suite of luxury seating for a cinema room in Hampstead, London. The design intent was ultimate comfort and good lumbar support, sensitive to the clients back problems.

Inspired by Everyman Cinema classic aesthetic and Art Deco tones we created a striking contemporary design.

12

Idea generation.

We created a modern set of seating for a luxury cinema room. I played a key role in designing and developing the chair to have ultimate comfort with a distinct look.

Development.

Through considered material selection and rigorous ergonomic testing, we defined proportions and refined design details for the sofa suite. I developed the technical drawings, component drawings for CNC manufacture and oversaw the final production and installation.

During my placement year, I worked in the luxury beauty department at L’Oréal. From designing retail flagship stores to launching new beauty counters in Harrods and Boots, as well as creating visual merchandising for brands including Lancôme, It Cosmetics, YSL and Kiehl’s.

I was involved in launching It Cosmetics in the UK, managing the design and production of POS displays for the brand, assisting in creating all visual graphics, and organising and installing the product merchandising for new counters in Boots.

Thank You!
