Go member of staff completes LifeCycle

Ruth Debono

Go employee Ruth Debono completed the Actavis LifeCycle Challenge 2014, cycling 2,000km from Fukuoka to Tokyo. Go was a Platinum Plus sponsor for this year’s edition, which saw 21 out of 23 participants successfully completing the gruelling challenge. The event, which is now in its 16th year, creates awareness about renal disease, collects funds to facilitate research and the purchase of equipment for the Renal Unit at Mater Dei Hospital, and enhances the lives of patients suffering from renal disease by offering them access to the best healthcare available. The Actavis LifeCycle Challenge is considered to be one of the toughest cycling courses in the world, with participants cycling an average of over 200km per day. Cyclists must each raise a set amount of money before they can take part, which is done through a combination of fundraising and corporate sponsorships, organised in between gruelling hours of training and preparation. They also pay their own travel expenses. Go has been an active sponsor of the Lifecycle Malta Foundation for a number of years as part of its corporate social responsibility programme.

UK football: never on a Saturday I note the recent increase in the Go share price on the local stock exchange. This is obviously good news for investors but possibly bad news for customers. Share price rises are often due to greater profits that can be achieved by reducing costs. One great way to reduce costs is to release staff. Last year, I called Go to ask for their Sports Channel package to be added and it was done almost instantaneously. One Saturday, I contacted them and asked for the Sports Channel package to be added once again and was informed that it would be done “sometime in the next 24 hours”. This was not the response I was hoping for. Go have a monopoly on showing the English Premier League so why should they care if they downgrade their customer service? We are all locked in. Well maybe not. If you know the right place to look you can watch all UK Premier League matches for free on the Internet. Might this worry Go and their shareholders just a smidgeon? I do hope so.
