Melita in major investment to expand data centre capacity Ten-fold expansion in co-location services aimed to attract foreign investment in cloud computing, online gaming and e-commerce
Melita has announced new investment in a ten-fold expansion of its data co-location services. The new space will also double Malta’s existing data centre capacity. Details of the investment were announced at a launch event attended by Economic Services Minister Chris Cardona at Melita’s new co-location facility in Madliena. The extension is expected to go live towards the end of the first quarter of 2015. The new co-location space will be housed in a purpose-built state-of-the-art facility adjacent to Melita’s existing data centre, which was inaugurated a year ago and sold out within a few months. The new extension forms part of a €60 million investment that Melita is rolling out over a five-year period. Dr Cardona praised the company for its commitment towards strengthening the country’s telecommunications infrastructure and commended Melita for its vision to continue developing the country’s capacity in data colocation services. He said Melita was creating optimum conditions for more foreign companies to relocate their operations to Malta. “Cutting edge data facilities, as these developed by Melita, are particularly attractive for financial services and online gaming operators, who are increasingly finding Malta as a reliable and secure location from where to conduct their business with the necessary peace of mind and state-of-the-art technical facilities” Dr Cardona said. Melita Group Chief Executive Officer Andrei Torriani said that this investment continued to solidify the chain of investments that Melita had already completed to strengthen its telecom infrastructure.

“Malta can proudly say – we can provide the infrastructure you need; we can help your business become a success.” – Minister Chris Cardona Article By: di-ve.com news editorial@di-ve.com The Minister for the Economy, Investment and Small Business, Dr Chris Cardona presided over the launch of a new investment by Melita to expand its existing state-of-the-art data co-location services tenfold. Minister Cardona expressed his satisfaction at the unveiling of this new project, representing another phase of a multimillion Euro investment that Melita is rolling out over a five-year period, amounting to a total of €60 million. The extension to the existing Melita data co-location centre, which is currently under construction, is expected to go live towards the end of the first quarter in 2015. Minister Cardona described this investment as another milestone for Melita and another step forward in the Company’s business. “Results show that Malta has been doing well in comparison to the EU average and confidence in the Maltese economy has grown by 3.5%, in contrast to the EU and Euro zone areas where the Economic Sentiment Indicator has decreased by 1%.” said Dr Cardona. Minister Cardona said that these statistics auger well for the decision taken by Melita to continue investing in improving its services since economic sentiment has improved in practically all sectors, including the services sector, where the great majority of businesses are predicting that the demand for their services will increase. Minister Cardona said that it is hard to think of any sector of the economy that is not dependent on information computer technology. Malta continually welcomes direct investment and practically all investors coming to Malta require the best infrastructure to support their business and demand high quality data services, more security, dependability and peace of mind, explained Minister Cardona. “Malta can proudly say – we can provide the infrastructure you need, we can help your business become a success,” affirmed Minister Cardona. Minister Cardona said that it is important that everyone plays a part in propelling Malta forward in the global market place. The government has developed a National Digital Strategy that is aimed at ensuring that government, business and citizens all seize the opportunities of the digital age and it is thriving to create the right environment to promote enterprise. “We understand that innovation is vital and it is our job to encourage that, not get in its way,” stated Minister Cardona. Minister Cardona said that he has no doubt that Melita will go on developing and expanding, and that the government will continue to offer its full support. The Minister concluded, “This is an industry where you never know where the road ends, but you can be sure the journey getting there will be exciting.”

Melita project, expected to go live in 2015, to double Malta’s data centre capacity John Cordina Friday, 3 October 2014,
A Melita project that is expected to go live in early 2015 is set to nearly double Malta's data centre capacity and increase the company's own data colocation services tenfold. The company provided details of the project during a visit to its Madliena premises by Economy Minister Chris Cardona. Colocation centres provide retail customers with the opportunity to rent data storage and bandwidth. Such services are increasingly in demand, particularly for companies whose business is internet-related. Melita inaugurated its first data centre only a year ago, but this centre's capacity was sold out within a few months, confirming the high demand for such services. The new data centre will be hosted in an adjacent structure that is presently under construction. The company is emphasising that its investment will prove to be greatly beneficial to the national economy, in light of the dependence of various sectors - including financial services and online gaming - on data centre services. "Our investments are enabling Malta to attract more foreign direct investment into the country, to create new smart jobs and to present itself as an ideal location for global businesses to prosper," CEO Andrei Torriani said. Chief operating officer, Ludolf Rasterhoff, explained that the company is already marketing the new data centre internationally, and said that international companies have expressed their interest. A number of these are even considering relocating to Malta as a result, he added. Mr Torriani also observed that the new data centre is part of a â‚Ź60 million investment the company has been rolling out over a 5-year period. He pointed out that the company has also invested strongly in its telecom infrastructure, including a submarine fibre cable to mainland Europe and international data links to leading internet providers in Milan and in Northern Europe, specifically to assist locally-based companies doing business with Scandinavian countries.
