Melita expand data centre capacity Melita is investing in a tenfold expansion of its existing state-of-the-art data co-location services. The new space will double Malta’s existing data centre capacity. The extension is currently under construction and is expected to go live towards the end of the first quarter in 2015. The new co-location space will be housed in a purpose-built, state-of-the-art facility adjacent to Melita’s existing data centre. The extension forms part of a €60 million investment that the company is rolling out over a five-year period. “Cutting-edge data facilities, as these developed by Melita, are particularly attractive for financial services and online gaming operators, who are increasingly finding Malta as a reliable and secure location from where to conduct their business with the necessary peace of mind and state-of-the-art technical facilities,” Economics Minister Chris Cardona said during a visit to the site. “More co-location space is critical for the country’s success in attracting new foreign companies to Malta but it’s not the only requirement. The country has to offer better quality and very high-end data centre capacity as well. “We believe that Melita’s existing and new data centres are Malta’s flagships in this sector,” Melita Group chief executive officer Andrei Torriani said. “Our investments are enabling Malta to attract more foreign direct investment to the country, to create new smart jobs and to present itself as an ideal location for global businesses to prosper.”

Melita completes bonds repayment Melita said today it has completed the full repayment of the nominal value and final interest due on its Melita Capital PLC 7.15% Bonds 2014 – 2016. Bondholders who appeared on the register of bondholders as at close of business on September 15 received their payments by direct credit to the bondholders’ bank account details. The bonds were redeemed following a resolution of the Board of Directors of Melita Capital PLC and last traded on September 10. “Once again we would like to thank all bondholders for the support shown through their respective investment in the Melita Capital PLC Bonds. The bondholders’ support has helped our organisation to invest in infrastructure and services that offer more value and more possibilities to our customers”, said Andrei Torriani, CEO of the Melita Group. Proceeds from the successful bonds issue in 2009 were used towards further growth in mobile services and broadband infrastructure for the Melita Group. The robots at Melita Thirty minutes, 31 seconds have passed, and there is nobody at Melita who can answer the phone. They start apologising from the morning, all the way to the evening. It is an absolute disgrace, that there always seems to be a backlog of calls, and nobody to help you apart from a robotic voice, who at one point tells you to look up the site on the internet! I suggest that they employ more personnel.

Cost of paper As from September 1, Melita plc have started charging 31 cents for what they call a “monthly paper bill charge’. I suppose it is a sign of progress when to receive a paper bill at home is considered a privilege for which you have to pay an extra charge. What next?

HSBC CREATING WAVES OF WATER CONSERVATION AWARENESS IN MALTA AND GOZO -

Campaign to reach out to 50,000 students by 2016 –

HSBC Bank Malta continues to inspire thousands of school children across the Maltese islands through education initiatives and sharing information about water conservation as part of its HSBC Water Programme ‘Catch the Drop’ awareness initiative. During the academic year of 2013-2014, staff volunteers for the HSBC Water Programme conducted 305 presentations for 19,438 students – nearly half of the total number the programme aims to reach by 2016. The HSBC volunteers are one of the driving forces behind the success of the programme. Between them, the volunteers aim to visit each of the schools in Malta and Gozo to give presentations about the importance of water conservation in the country. For the second consecutive year, HSBC Bank Malta has also worked with the government’s summer school programme, Skola Sajf 2014, which encompasses educational and fun activities for children aged from three to sixteen years old. HSBC volunteers helped to organise activities in 63 Skola Sajf centres in Malta and Gozo. These included talks by Dr Alan Deidun, University of Malta’s Senior Lecturer at the Physical Oceanography Unit, water cycle workshops, theatre shows, and visits to Pembroke Reverse Osmosis Plant. School students in Gozo visited the Dwejra Interpretation Centre. Glenn Bugeja, HSBC Water Programme coordinator says: “The HSBC Malta Water Programme is aimed at achieving two vital objectives: raising awareness about water conservation among students across Malta, and involving students in water projects to encourage their development as pro-active ambassadors for water conservation and environmental sustainability.” “It is important to note that 25% of our HSBC Malta team, close to 350 employees, have personally helped to spread the message about water conservation through a series of presentations for schools. Our employees have also been eager to support Skola Sajf 2014 by organising water-related games and puzzles to engage and educate young minds.” HSBC team members also arranged for students to visit the Pembroke Reverse Osmosis Plant, the BirdPark and hotels to learn about their different water-saving measures.
