Vodafone promotes e-billing to reduce its carbon footprint Wednesday, 10 Oct 2012, 15:32
Vodafone Malta is committed to reduce its carbon footprint and one of the initiatives the company has been promoting for the past few years is the e-billing system. The company now has over 41,000 unique customers signed up for secure e-billing and by August 2012, 79% of Vodafone’s postpaid customers were on e-billing when compared to 69% last year, with an increase of 10% in just one year.
Considering that a one-paper-invoice leaves a 100g carbon footprint, these results are extremely positive. “Many of us are concerned about the environment and Vodafone is aware of its own environmental impact,” said Alexandre Froment-Curtil, Head of Marketing at Vodafone Malta. “Looking at ways of reducing our impact on the environment has become part of our daily life. E-billing is one of our strategic goals which helps us to continue to be a responsible business.”
Since June 2008, Vodafone Malta has taken a step towards sustainability through its ebilling system. It introduced a secure free e-billing service, allowing customers to access their bills online and providing them with the opportunity to do away with the traditional posted bill.
Being a responsible, modern business, Vodafone is going through an ongoing and evolving process in order to protect the environment. As part of Vodafone Group’s initiative worldwide to reduce its carbon footprint by 50% by 2020, e-billing plays an important role in the organisation’s social responsability and sustainability plan.
“E-billing is simply one initiative that Vodafone has taken on board to be a sustainable business, helping the environment we live in,” said Miriam Dalli, Corporate Affairs Senior Executive at Vodafone Malta. “Vodafone has an extensive programme of activities to help us reach our environmental targets while making sustainability a core part of our business.”
Vodafone’s e-billing system gives you powerful new insight into the breakdown of mobile phone bills and by going paperless everyone will be doing their bit for the environment. Vodafone customers can login at any time and view not only their current bill but also previous bills online. If every household used e-billing, it could reduce waste

Vodafone offers the new nanoSIM Vodafone has announced the availability of the new nanoSIM cards. The nanoSIM is the smallest SIM form factor on the market. With the introduction of the nanoSIM, measuring 12.3 x 8.8mm and a thickness reduced to a mere 0.7mm; about 30 per cent smaller than the microSIM; the manufacturers now have the opportunity to produce devices that are thinner and more appealing, achieving a better balance between the need for powerful components and a slim design. “The nanoSIM is so slim and tiny that you might only be able to handle it with tweezers,” said Karl Galea, Terminals Senior Executive from Vodafone Malta. “We are proud to be the first in Malta to offer our consumers the nanoSIM. Don’t let its size fool you; this SIM still packs a punch by comprising a wide range of available memory. Moreover, it is essential in ensuring that our customers use state-of-the art devices that function only on the nanoSIM.” The nanoSIM will still be delivered in an ID-1 frame, just like most plug-in and microSIM cards yet it is unique in thickness which means that it cannot be cut down to size from a microSIM. The nanoSIM will be available from all Vodafone stores as from Monday 1 st October. Two teams from Vodafone Malta gave their all during this year’s charity event, “It’s a Knockout” organized by Inspire. 17 Vodafone employees together with their families and friends had the opportunity to compete in amusing tasks and took part in the games organized for the day. Ta’ Qali National Park was transformed into a large inflatable obstacle course for the 3rd Edition of “It’s a Knockout”. Companies, groups of people, and organisations met in a relaxed, fun and stress free environment outside their normal work routine for an unforgettable team building event. Giant inflatable challenges, crazy costumes, wacky props, plenty of foam and water were the order of the day. “This unusual afternoon served more than one aim,’ said Diane Laferla from Vodafone who take part in the challenges. “Everyone revisited the fun and shared common jokes from the event. What makes “It’s a Knockout” even more worthwhile is the fact that the money we raised is going to help less fortunate children who depend on Inspire’s services. Our family and friends also joined the fun and nonstop spectacular entertainment, whilst giving their support.” The Vodafone Malta Foundation was one of the main sponsors of the event which aims to raise funds whilst boosting team spirit. “Our aim is to collaborate further with Inspire who help people with physical and learning disabilities reach their fullest potential,” said Roberta Pace, Administrator of the Vodafone Malta Foundation. “The day was a memorable one for all of us because whilst being a day full of fun, it was also a great opportunity for everyone to get to know each other outside their work environment.”

Vodafone embarks on a paperless culture to reduce consumption
Everyone is more aware of the environment, and as a result, more and more people are doing what they can to preserve the natural world around them, even large companies like Vodafone. As part of its drive to cut down on paper, Vodafone has sent 11 tonnes worth of paper to be recycled, which results in saving about 187 trees from April 2010 till the present day. In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that can contribute to climate change and to reduce the energy required to manufacture new paper products, Vodafone makes a special effort to ensure that all their waste paper is recycled. Recycling paper products saves considerable landfill space and reduces energy and water consumption. Recycling also provides greater energy and a reduction of methane emissions caused when burning waste paper. Miriam Dalli, Corporate Affairs Senior Executive at Vodafone Malta said “In our quest to further help the environment we are living in, Vodafone Malta seperates all waste and recycle all paper, whilst making sure that all waste documentation is disposed of in a secure and eco-friendly manner. Vodafone is instilling a paperless culture among its employees in order to avoid unnecessary printing. When Vodafone moves to its new offices in Skyparks, all printing will be centralized in two rooms per floor. Documents will only be printed if an employee physically goes to the printer with the identification card to print out the documents sent to be printed. Documents not printed within a specified time frame, will be deleted off the system. Vodafone is also currently using an Electronic Document Management System, which helps to store, retrieve and share documents electronically and is also electronically archiving the documents that must be kept. These archived documents will then be shared primarily in electronic format. Vodafone is also encouraging employees to use tablets to further reduce the usage of paper.
CLIENT: VODAFONE DIRECT MEDIUM: MALTASTAR.COM DATE: 3 OCTOBER 2012
“We are moving towards a paperless environment and the current initiatives are just a small part of the whole picture,” said Antoinette Camilleri, Property Manager at Vodafone Malta. “Once we move to our new offices in Skyparks, we will be providing a detailed report of printing record per employee. The idea is to follow up these amounts with a percentage target reduction per team. We have also introduced changes in our culture and mentality and we’re moving from a paper based structure to an electronic structure which makes use of the latest technology.”

Italian sport on Go television I too become annoyed each time sports programmes on RaiDue are transferred after about 45 minutes to Rai Sports Channel I or II. This change in channels makes it impossible for Go subscribers to continue watching that particular programme. Like Lara Huber (September 26), I ask what is keeping Go from providing these two Rai sports channels like Melita Cable does. What amazes me is that in spite of the letters appearing in The Times and in other newspapers, Go has not come up with an explanation. Is it because their Customer Care has assumed a ‘couldn’t care less’ attitude or is it because they are reluctant to admit that their marketing department has been outdone by their counterparts at Melita Cable?

Bank of Valletta is supporting the 11th edition of Festival Mediterranea, a celebration of art and culture in the heart of Gozo, organised by Teatru Astra, the highlight of which will be the opera “Madama Butterfly”. This year’s festival will be held between the 25th October and the 17th November and includes a wideranging programme of events, from opera to food and wine. The festival was officially launched during a press conference held at the BOV Centre in Santa Venera and addressed by Chief Executive Officer Charles Borg of Bank of Valletta, Festival Mediterranea Chairman Michael Formosa, and Prof. Mro Joseph Vella, the festival’s music director. The opera selected for this year is “Madama Butterfly” which will feature three world-class singers – soprano Daniela Dessì, tenor Fabio Armiliato and baritone Carlo Guelfi, who have sung together on some of the most important opera stages worldwide, as well as in several recordings, and will be singing again together in Gozo. Mro. Vella will be directing the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, while the Teatru Astra Opera Chorus, under the tuition of Maria Frendo, participates. Italian stage director Enrico Stinchelli has been once again entrusted with this production. The opera will be performed on the 25th and the 27th October at 19.30h. Mr Formosa explained that the festival focuses its attention on local history, art and tradition in a month-long celebration, while giving prominence to music through a number of concerts, from chamber to symphonic. There will also be a dance performance, as well as lectures and on-site visits. Prof. Mro. Joseph Vella explained that from the artistic point of view, this year’s cast for “Madama Butterfly” is yet another high benchmark that Teatru Astra is setting itself and it presents a unique opportunity that local opera goers should not miss. It will be the first time that the three main singers will be singing during an opera in the Maltese Islands. BOV’s Mr Borg expressed his admiration for the work which goes into the annual event, noting that it was one of the factors which had made Gozo a destination for culture-lovers.

HSBC’s boat ride for underprivileged children Article published on 12 October 2012
Around 200 children from various child-caring institutions, and NGOs in Malta enjoyed a day of activity out at sea, jointly organised by the HSBC Malta Foundation and Captain Morgan Cruises. Departing from Sliema ferries, the boat ride included a day full of activity, a stop for lunch at Comino, and time to enjoy some of Malta’s most desirable swimming areas. “It is heartwarming to see these children – many of whom are facing serious life challenges – relaxing, playing together and enjoying the simple pleasures of a day out at sea,” said Josef Camilleri, Head of Sustainability at HSBC Malta. “The HSBC Malta Foundation organises such activities and events as part of its ongoing support for disadvantaged children in Malta.” “Apart from being a most relaxing way to enjoy the day, our cruises offer passengers fresh perspectives and new sights of Malta’s coastline, ports, and beaches. It is our pleasure to organise this charitable cause and offer our services for the benefit of these children,” said Kevin Zammit Briffa, General Manager from Captain Morgan Cruises. Over the last decade, the HSBC Malta Foundation donated more than €3 million towards its three central objectives: To improve the quality of life and education for disadvantaged children, to promote and work towards a more sustainable environment, and to preserve Malta’s rich cultural heritage.
