Hands on Heritage programme launched
Video: Darrin Zammit LupI Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna has launched the 2013 edition of the ‘Hands on Heritage’ educational programme. Targeting school children, this programme is focused on getting them more engaged with their cultural heritage, by providing them with the opportunity to experience episodes from the past. The programme forms part of the collaboration between the FWA and Bank of Valletta. As part of the programme, school children are invited to one of the many sites managed by Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna such as Fort Rinella or the Malta at War Museum, where specially trained animators engage them in practical sessions meant to help them understand the more complex elements of history and heritage.

Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna CEO Mario Farrugia said the programme offered students a unique opportunity to handle period instruments and tools and learn how they worked and were used. “We bring what is normally seen on text-books or television to life while learning old skills and discussing issues of heritage and historical interest,” he said. The ‘Hands on Heritage’ Programme is an integral part of the BOV’s long-term partnership with Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna, media and community relations manager Joyce Tabone said. “While preserving our history through restoration projects is one of our main priorities, keeping our history alive through our children is a very effective way of promoting knowledge about the rich heritage that the Maltese islands have been through, through the ages,” she said.

Campaign launched to combat illiteracy Through its corporate social responsibility programme, Bank of Valletta is sponsoring part of the National Literacy Campaign which complements the National Literacy Strategy launched by the Education Ministry. The National Literacy Strategy for All was launched by the Government last May for public consultation, in tandem with a National Literacy Campaign to target different sectors of society. This strategy has both lifelong and “life-wide” dimensions and puts emphasis on “intergenerational” aspects of education, as promoted by UNESCO, which recognise the importance of the role of families and the wider community in raising levels of literacy. Malta’s 2010 results in the Programme for International Assessment showed that over 36 per cent of Maltese 15-year-olds were low achievers in reading literacy compared with the European Union average of almost 20 per cent. In addition, in the 2011 Progress in International Reading Study, the mean reading score of Maltese 10-year-olds was significantly lower than the international average. The initial main focus of the BOV-Ministry collaboration will be on a reading promotion campaign with designated activities involving the use of multi-media, which will seek to spread a culture of reading and increase levels of literacy among children as well as the wider community. Further collaboration is envisaged throughout the coming years between the BOV and the Ministry for Education and Employment on a number of educational initiatives and projects from which Maltese society will benefit.

BOV reduces carbon footprint
Bank of Valletta has taken yet another step towards reducing its carbon footprint through the replacement of the lighting on the façade of its Head Office in Sta Venera with low-consumption light fittings. It is estimated that the replacement of metal-halide lamps with LED light fittings will reduce electricity consumption by over 24,000 kilowatt hours per year, translating into a reduction of over 26,000 kgs of harmful carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This initiative forms part of a long-term project that Bank of Valletta has embarked upon in its bid to minimise its carbon footprint. The initial phase of the project involved a full lighting audit of its offices and branches, as well as the usage of lowerconsumption fittings. The second phase saw the installation of over 300 photovoltaic panels generating 135,000 units per annum, further reducing 118,000 kgs of CO2. Given that the average tree absorbs 7kg of carbon dioxide every year, it would take over 20,000 trees to absorb this amount of CO2. “The greatest challenge in implementing clean energy solutions is dealing with old infrastructure in existing buildings, which need to be upgraded and converted to cleaner, more efficient systems using alternative power sources,” said Mark Marmara, Environmental Responsibility Manager at Bank of Valletta. “We are also looking into our operations with efforts being made to introduce initiatives aimed at reducing the use of paper and generate less waste,” he continued.
