introduction

I have been working in, for me, one of the best offices in Lisbon for the last 4 years - matos gameiro arquitectos - learning a lot about architecture and about being an architect. Always working at my best, I feel that I had a great opportunity to improve and gain new skills. Now my purpose is to keep my career in a good path and deal with new challenges in an office also defined by quality work. By doing that, I expect to keep learning from valid perspectives, always considering the urgent issues for good architecture like scale, form, texture, implantation, light, construction and like so. In order to be accepted in an office of my interest I show in the following pages my work and a variety of skills and abilities (chapters my work descripton page6|7 and about page 58|61).

description I concluded the Master Degree in Architecture from ISCTE Lisbon University Institute in 2008 and start working in May of the same year at the office of the architect Pedro Matos Gameiro. In this office I participated on the development of projects of different contexts, typologies and scales, from housing to public and private equipments, like a secondary school, an rural hotel and a laboratory complex. My work is defined, in an early stage, by participating on the production of the project design pieces, according with the representation strategy established to better characterize and describe the spaces and the wanted spatial qualities. I learned about the composition of the project design system, as being the several project design phases, from the preliminary phase to the execution and supervision of the construction work. Just as the corresponding differences between projects of different scales. By the interaction with several intervenient, architecture and specialties project colleagues, I have assimilated the respective project contributes and participations.

In 2009 I assume the function of representing the Design Team to coordinate and supervise the construction of the Santo Andre Secondary School, in Barreiro. I was able to manage the coordination and supervision of meetings between the architecture project designers, the specialties projects and the owner, to serve the review and approval of the project, during the phases of project revision (after execution) and construction. I frequently interact with the figures of the Contractor and the Owner, defending the implementation of project and adjusting the defined solutions to the new circumstances of the building construction and the new programmatic requirements presented by the owner, a public company (Parque Escolar, EPE). The supervision of construction work remained until the end of 2010, with simultaneous participation in other projects. Recently, I was asked by the architect Pedro Gameiro to have a more active participation, by contributing more significantly in the project of Marine Sciences Laboratories for the Biology Department of Évora University, initiated in 2011, and it´s spatial definition by studying and developing possible solutions. Meanwhile I´ve been supervising the contruction of one of our latest projects, the renovation and refurbishment of apartment in guerra junqueiro street. 7

A series of requests for the study of low-cost energy efficient housing gave rise to this proposal for a family home in Mozambique. The proposal is broken down and thought of in it´s most basic elements, of walls, roofs, openings of sun and sky. The walls are the primary self supportive element which guarantee flexibility as their design change, in plan and elevation, according to the particular characteristics of any given site; to which the roof acts as a secondary element which flows accordingly to the these changes, resulting in a organic rooftop artificial landscape. The walls are proposed to function perpendicular to southern sun, as to create constant shade and a more suitable environment for crop cultivation at African climates, as a simple control of the site. The roof, a perpendicular substructure, acts as a filter for wind coming from east and west directions, along with the filtering of the sun to the central patio and heart of the home. All elements are put together using local construction techniques and materials to compress and cook the brick, treat the wood and solidify the floors. Nevertheless this budget has included low-cost water storage underground well located in the central patio, as well as a self-mounted solar panel system attached to some of the rotating roof-top lamelles, in order to produce electricity. The home occupies half of the lot, and takes the most advantage of all available recources. By allocating the home longitudinally, more shade is created and as such more usable flexible area is available to it´s users. Along with this, the interior program is equally flexible as the program configurates itself around a central patio offering light and transparency to a very protectively contained volume, with punctual moments of contact with the exterior.

GUEST HOUSE FOR AGRI-TOURISM academic project location: Barreiro, Portugal surface: 400 m2 typology: hotel and leisure date: 2008 2nd semester 5th year

prize: PrĂŠmio SECIL Universidades Arquitectura 2008

The Quinta da Azinheira Velha, located on the east bank of the river Coina, a tributary of the river Tagus, offers multiple brands in its territory of the economic activities that there was developed for centuries. This place, represented in the model by highlighting the contours reveals the formation of the watershed whose boundaries (ridge line) coincides with the boundary of nearby space. This reality reflects the isolation from the surrounding territories and the privileged contact with the river. It also reflects the distribution and preservation system of the water that the artificial elements allow. Retaining walls that shape the land, gutters that lead and boilers that store the water and also, the tide mill, which uses the natural movement of the tides to generate energy, form the set of pieces that manage this natural resource, revealing the essence of this territory in the manipulation of water. The development of a guest house for agro-tourism in the Quinta da Azinheira Velha supports the projection of a building-route around the boiler. It takes as main reference the pre-existing walls that determine the deployment of the new route made up of white concrete walls. It is expected to achieve an integrated intervention in the territory and an harmonious exploitation of the relations with the farm and river. The user, either led or dispersed, throught the building, benefits from a succession of spaces that create a gradient between inside and outside spaces.

46

At two different times within the proposed route the building appears, taken as walls, which become spaces. In the transverse direction of the road that divides the two existing boilers is, at floor 0, the restaurant, that rises above the landscape overlooking the boiler, the tide mill and the river. At floor -1, coinciding with the water level, the relationship is reversed. This space is strongly interior and maintains the relationship with the outside through the ramps and the huge lantern that comes within the atrium space. This serves as access to the winery and the regional food store, which is itself a space for wine tasting. In the longitudinal direction, following the boiler nearest the river and the mill, is the guest house. In order to incite the relationship between residents, the level 0 hosts the living and leisure spaces, organized by an interior wall that suggests the organization and also allow the contemplation of the landscape. On floor 1, the library and the rooms have very controlled relations with the outside. The roof, reveals the formation of an artificial plateau that serves as a lookout over the riverside. The pool appears between the boiler and the river following as a link between the guest house and tide mill.

BRIDGE CONECTION BETWEEN TWO CITIES | BAR academic project location: Barreiro and Seixal, Portugal typology: public equipment - service and leisure date: 2007 1st semester 5th year

Between the river Coina and the shores of cities Barreiro and Seixal there are two distinct realities. The first territory live with the river and is defined by the greater presence of vegetation and recreational programs. The second area is defined by the city that is indifferent to the existence of the river, that because of the urgency of housing and building manufacturing units, ignore the presence of the river and the surrounding landscape. The proposed pedestrian and tram bridge was result of the analysis of river Coina shore areas, which distinguishes between two realities, proposing two bridges to serve the city in accordance with the identified main characteristics. The bridges, similar to each other, horizontal, differ in function and in height. The tram bridge is higher to make a direct and immediate connection between the centers of Barreiro and Seixal and the pedestrian bridge links the shores at a lower level, physically closer to the river. The bridges are defined by trays of white concrete, simple straight lines, which are based on cylindrical pillars of the same material and are intended to convey a sense of lightness, as if they were two stretched strings.

52

Trying to integrate these structures in the city while considering the main roads, rise to their alignment the bodies that lay the bridges. These bodies emerge from the ground and form the transition between the bridge and the ground, marking the beginning and end of the bridges. In contrast to the lightness of the bridges, these gray concrete bodies, belong to the ground and express a heavy and sturdy appearance. In Barreiro, the two existing bodies present themselves straight, while the shore of Seixal arises as a bifurcated curve resulting from the convergence of the tram and pedestrian bridge. The Bar appears prominently in the Barreiro riverside area. Its form involves the pedestrian path on the beach and throw a covered deck, counterbalanced, that lookout the riverside landscape. The service spaces of the bar and toilet facilities are concentrated at the extremities of the building, working separate and independently.
