Privacytopia festival

Privacytopia is a unique, nomadic arts festival that travels around the EU to research and discuss data use and its implications for individuals and society. It is an initiative of the Belgian nonprofit organisation Privacy Salon. Each year we will work in a different country and city with a guest curator and dozens of local and international artists, with contemporary art on the cutting edge, but also analogue, modern, classical, or ‘dead’ art looking for the real history of the turbo Anthropocene.

Thanks to the City of Ghent, Gents Kunstenoverleg and many local cultural and noncultural partners, Privacytopia can launch its concept in Gent in March 2024.

Privacytopia is een uniek, nomadisch kunstenfestival dat door de EU reist om datagebruik en de implicaties ervan voor individuen en de samenleving te onderzoeken en te bespreken. Het is een initiatief van de Belgische vzw Privacy Salon. Elk jaar gaan we in een ander land en een andere stad aan de slag met een gastcurator en tientallen lokale en internationale kunstenaars, met hedendaagse kunst op het scherpst van de snede, maar ook analoge, moderne, klassieke of ‘dode’ kunst op zoek naar de echte geschiedenis van het turbo Antropoceen.

Dankzij Stad Gent, Gents Kunstenoverleg en vele lokale culturele en niet-culturele partners kan Privacytopia in maart 2024 haar concept lanceren in Gent.

Privacytopia est un festival d’art unique et nomade, qui voyage à travers l’UE pour explorer et discuter de l’utilisation des données et de ses implications pour les individus et la société. Il s’agit d’une initiative de l’ASBL belge Privacy Salon. Chaque année, nous travaillons dans un pays et une ville différents avec un commissaire invité et des dizaines d’artistes locaux et internationaux, avec de l’art contemporain très pointu comme de l’art analogique, moderne, classique ou “mort”, sur les traces de la véritable histoire de la turbo-anthropocène.

Grâce à la Ville de Gand, à Gents Kunstenoverleg et à de nombreux partenaires culturels et non-culturels locaux, Privacytopia lancera son concept à Gand en mars 2024.

Artificial Intelligence? Data? Privacy? Surveillance? The topics on everyone’s mind today. But how do we approach such complex concepts? How do we create a critical debate around and about them without getting lost in worries and resignation? How do we (want to) live within datafied societies?

Under the motto Looking at Everything from Everywhere, Privacytopia opens the mind for critical discussions over how we as humans and citizens interact and live in a reality where data protection, privacy, articifical intelligence, cyberbullying and fact checking matter as much as cyborgs, robotics and cyber security.

Starting with art but expanding to a truly interdisciplinary environment, the festival debates these topics from very different perspectives for a whole month, through art exhibitions, symposia, workshops, concerts, theatre and much more throughout the city of Gent.

Artificial Intelligence? Data? Privacy? Surveillance? Het zijn de onderwerpen waar iedereen vandaag aan denkt en waar media bol van staan. Maar hoe benaderen we zulke complexe concepten? Hoe creëren we hierover een kritisch debat zonder te verdwalen in zorgen en berusting? Hoe (willen we) leven in een gedataficeerde samenleving?

Onder het motto Looking at Everything from Everywhere opent Privacytopia de weg naar kritisch debat over hoe wij als mens en burger met elkaar omgaan en leven in een realiteit waarin gegevensbescherming, privacy, kunstmatige intelligentie, cyberpesten en factchecking net zo belangrijk zijn als cyborgs, robotica en cyberbeveiliging.

Kunst en kunstenaars bepalen het festival, maar het programma wordt uitbreidend naar een echt interdisciplinaire omgeving, waar we een maand lang kunnen debatteren over deze onderwerpen, vanuit heel verschillende perspectieven, via kunsttentoonstellingen, symposia, workshops, concerten, theater en nog veel meer in de stad Gent.

Intelligence Artificielle? Utilisation des données? Confidentialité? Surveillance? Ces sujets, omniprésents dans les médias, semblent définir le monde d’aujourd’hui. Mais comment aborder des concepts aussi complexes? Comment mettre en place un débat critique sur la question, sans plonger dans l’inquiétude ou la résignation ? Comment voulons-nous vivre dans une société « datifiée » ?

Suivant le mot d’ordre Looking at Everything from Everywhere, Privacytopia ouvre la voie à un débat critique sur la façon dont nous, humains et citoyens, interagissons et vivons une réalité dans laquelle la protection des données, la vie privée, l’intelligence artificielle, la cyberintimidation et la vérification des faits sont tout aussi importantes que les cyborgs, la robotique et la cybersécurité.

A partir d’œuvres d’art, le programme du festival veut mettre en place un environnement véritablement interdisciplinaire, où pendant un mois ces sujets seront débattus sous des angles très différents, à travers des expositions, des colloques, des ateliers, des concerts, du théâtre et bien plus encore dans la ville de Gand.

Call for ART :

We collaborate with artists and curators in multiple ways. The invited curator in Ghent 2024 is Régine Debatty, overlooking the thematic approaches and curated shows. We have an open call for artists. We encourage all artists - experienced or not in the subjects of datafication - to send proposals.

Call for WORKSHOPS | SYMPOSIA :

Privacytopia opens up the podium for timely discussions over a wide range of issues related to the festivals themes.

Open Call voor kunstenaars: We werken op verschillende manieren samen met kunstenaars en curatoren. De uitgenodigde curator in Gent is Régine Debatty die de thematische benaderingen en gecureerde shows overziet. We hebben een open call voor kunstenaars. We moedigen alle kunstenaars – met of zonder ervaring op het gebied van dataficatie - aan om voorstellen in te dienen.

Open Call voor Workshops | symposia: Privacytopia biedt een podium aan voor discussies over kwesties die verband houden met de festivalthema’s. We moedigen individuen en lokale organisaties (binnen en buiten de artistieke wereld) aan indien ze geïnteresseerd zijn in de onderwerpen, om betrokken te raken bij het organiseren van workshops en symposia.

Open call voor onderwijs: Heb jij al nagedacht over jouw projectweek of de belangrijke thema’s voor het schooljaar 2023/2024? Datagebruik, surveillance, privacy... ligt op ieders lippen. Hoe gaan we ermee om? Wat kunnen we samen doen om jongeren aan te zetten tot kritisch denken? Klassen en schoolgroepen kunnen genieten van bezoeken op maat die passen bij uw curriculum. Privacytopia werkt samen met organisaties die jongeren en kinderen aanspreken in hun eigen taal, met als doel kritisch denken te stimuleren.

We encourage individuals and local organizations (within and out of the artistic realm) that are interested in the topics to get involved with Privacytopia; to organize workshops | symposia in constructive partnerships.

Call for EDUCATION :

Have you already thought about your project week or the important themes for the 2023/2024 school year? Data use, surveillance, privacy... are on everyone’s lips, but how do we deal with them? What can we do together to encourage young people to think critically? Classes and school groups can enjoy customized visits that fit your curriculum. The Privacytopia organization works with those who address young people and children in their own language, with the aim of stimulating critical thinking.

Appel ouvert aux artistes : Nous collaborons avec des artistes et des commissaires de différentes manières. Commissaire invitée à Gand, Régine Debatty supervise les approches thématiques et les différentes expositions. A travers cet appel, nous encourageons tous les artistes – avec ou sans expérience en donnéification– à soumettre leurs propositions.

Appel ouvert pour workshops et colloques: Privacytopia met en place une plate-forme pour discuter un large éventail de questions liées aux thèmes du festival. Nous encourageons les individus et les organisations locales (au sein du monde artistique ou en-dehors) intéressées par ces sujets à s’impliquer dans Privacytopia par l’organisation d’ateliers, de workshops ou de colloques.

Appel ouvert aux enseignants : Vous êtes actif professionnellement dans le domaine de l’éducation. Avezvous déjà pensé à votre semaine de projet ou aux thèmes importants pour l’année scolaire 2023/2024 ? L’utilisation des données, la surveillance, la protection de la vie privée... sont sur les lèvres de tout un chacun, mais comment y faire face? Que pouvons-nous faire ensemble pour encourager les jeunes à faire preuve d’esprit critique? Les classes et les groupes scolaires peuvent bénéficier de visites sur mesure adaptées à leur cursus. Privacytopia travaille avec des organisations qui s’adressent aux jeunes et aux enfants avec leur propre language, dans le but de stimuler la pensée critique.
